Gerald McCoy Urging Jason Licht To Sign Freshly Unemployed Joey Bosa

March 6th, 2025

Ex-Bucs Pro Bowler wants him.

Joe is confident that when former Bucs six-time Pro Bowler Gerald McCoy takes to Twitter and uses Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht’s name, that post gets the attention of shot-callers at One Buc Palace.

And as much as Joe agrees with GMC about not just a team need, but a massive hole at a make-or-break position, Joe can’t agree with GMC on this player.

This offseason GMC has been very vocal on social media begging, pleading, egging on Licht to break down and go get a proven pass rusher.

Joe is in lockstep with GMC.

First, GMC begged Licht to trade for All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett. GMC’s logic was sound: A first-round pick (which would likely be the starting ransom for Garrett) has a 50 percent chance of making it in the NFL. GMC wisely added that Garrett is “100 percent.”

Can’t argue with that.

But last night GMC wasted little time after news moved that Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa was released. Yes, Joe wants a proven quarterback assault artist. Just not that badly.

Bosa, once upon a time, was a dangerous man. In four of his first six seasons in San Diego, Bosa was a double-digit sack guy. Then Bosa became brittle.

Through the last three years, Bosa’s highest sack total for a season was 6.5 in 2023 and he’s averaged just nine games played.

Jamel Dean laughs at that number.

To make matters worse, Bosa will soon be a 30-year old brittle defensive end/outside linebacker. NFL teams aren’t exactly lining up for those guys, no matter the player’s last name.

If the Bucs gamble on an injury-prone outside linebacker, Joe would rather see them pick up Giants free agent Azeez Ojulari, who is six years younger than Bosa and would likely be considerably cheaper. If Ojulari suddenly becomes dependable, hey, you may have the next Shaq Barrett.

This isn’t the first time GMC has tried to link Joey Bosa to the Bucs.

Joe loves how GMC is fed up with a lack of an edge rush and is trying to will Licht to pull a trigger. Joe’s not on board with the Joey Bosa Express. Not as starter.

Gerald McCoy Seems To Be Recruiting Joey Bosa

  1. I Remember 21 Says:

At this point I think we need to start having articles when there’s someone Gerald McCoy DOESN’T want Licht to sign. Where on Earth has he gotten the idea to fancy himself a GM in waiting?

  2. Defense Rules Says:

I Remember 21 … I was thinking exactly the same thing. EVERYONE seems to get GMC’s backing. GMC is losing credibility rapidly.

  3. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

GMC would be worse than “I Love that guy!”Jon Gruden.

  4. Tellitlikeitis Says:

I don’t know, he’s 4 and a half years younger than Mack and when he has been healthy he has produced. If the bucs could get him for the right price and he could stay relatively healthy I don’t see why not. He would have a chip on his should much like Baker did when he arrived and would be great for the younger players in the locker room. The bucs could do way worse I say go for it.

  5. Tellitlikeitis Says:

    Chip on shoulder….it’s early…lol

  6. Ron Mexico Says:

@ I Remember 21, would he want Licht to sign Randy Gregory? I’m in doubt, what do you think?

  7. Beeej Says:

    Compare Bosa’s stats to Mack

  8. Zoocomics Says:

There was a time where I’d get excited about some of these things, and that was during the Brady era, where we played for the Super Bowl every year, and EVERY free agent in the league knew it. When you have that kind of juice, you don’t pay top dollar to outspend the Ravens, Bills, Eagles and Chiefs, you at least of a dog in the fight, with enough money leftover to pick up more talent for the championship run. Regardless of how we all feel about this team/franchise and what it’s capable of, I think it’s viewed very very differently around the league.

I don’t even know what he’d cost us, but most likely it’s too much. Hell, if Mack is asking for $15-20M per, at age 34…I think it’s too much. We still have some holes to fill.

  9. heyjude Says:

Thinking about Ira’s latest podcast and hearing that after 30 is hard for edge rushers. Nick may not be the one for us either. He has had a lot of injuries.

Have to agree with others, GMC isn’t really thinking through who he feels would be the best players for the Bucs. I like the guy but he should dial back on these picks.

  10. View from 132 Says:

    Sign everyone!

  11. WilieG Says:

If he was inexpensive, I’d sign him and use him in rotation with Shaq. Maybe.

  12. Kenton Smith Says:

Defense Rules almost hit the nail on the head. He’s not losing credibility rapidly DR. He’s lost credibility. And I hate to say that about a player from OU.

  13. TheBigSombreo Says:

McCoy wants the Bucs to sign every big name out there… regardless of age or salary cap. LOL

  14. Kgh4life Says:

Pass Joey Bosa the guy misses more games than Jamel Dean.

  15. BigBucsFan Says:

Not the best at comparison for your case joe, bosa has two less games according to that and is dominating him in almost all the numbers especially forced fumbles. So one should come at a bargain that is for sure but bosa under the right deal would be welcome to the team for both his leadership teaching his knowledge and skills and he can still play. If he wants to play with the bucs and comes at a team friendly decent price then draft is under study as well in the draft

  16. Defense Rules Says:

Rather than signing any of these over-30 Edge guys, Bucs need to be looking for somewhat-younger veteran Edges who they can trade for. Titans’ Harold Landry still comes to mind, but I’m sure there are others who teams will be willing to trade IF they end up drafting another Edge this year. It may just take awhile for JL to pull this off though because it takes two to tango.

The mock drafts fluctuate all over the place, but sometimes they show interesting trends. For instance, a couple days ago PFF came out with their latest mock and it made the opening statement … ‘Interior defensive linemen will rule the first round and the top 50: Four interior defenders go on Day 1 in this mock draft, led by Michigan’s Mason Graham’.

INTERIOR defensive linemen? Music to my ears. In the first 32 picked, there were 4 IDLs chosen (Michigan’s DL Mason Graham at #11, Ole Miss’ Walter Nolen at #17, Toledo’s Darius Alexander at #29 and Michigan’s Kenneth Grant at #30.

And yes there were also 5 Edge taken in Rnd 1: Penn State’s Abdul Carter at #1 (by Tennessee), Texas A&M Shemar Stewart at #8 (by Carolina), Marshall’s Mike Green at #15 (by Falcons), Boston College’s Donovan Ezeiruaku at #19 by the Bucs, and Tennessee’s James Pierce at #28 by the Lions.

That makes 9 front defenders (4 IDL & 5 Edge) going in Rnd 1. Plus that PFF mock had another 2 LB, 5 CB & 2 Safety going in Rnd 1, for a total of 18 out of 32 on defense. Hopefully the Bucs can get some major contributors in the Top 3-4 Rnds this year like we’ve done in the past several years.

  17. Chefjeffrey Says:

Big time money for a guy who has fallen off? No way.

  18. Mord Says:

Given age and wear, interesting to compare Bosa vs. Shaq Barrett

  19. Senor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

Since EDGE is our biggest need (IMO), when you read that there is an opportunity to get a Myles Garrett, its easy to say give up that #19 pick. Clearly, Garrett would instantly transform this defense. But now I understand why JL might not make such a move.

If it were me, I would rather sign Khalil Mack and draft ILB Campbell at #19 (which we would lose that pick if we traded for Garrett, and possibly more). I think the combination of Mack and Campbell add more to the team than just Garrett.

  20. BPBucsfan Says:

Your best ability is your availability, and Bosa doesn’t have that. Hard pass.

  21. Allbuccedup Says:

What is this now Gerald bucs fan blog?

  22. Jwg813 Says:

In Licht I trust. GMcoy is a jackass, he is a voice that can be disregarded. He was not a bad player but was never a great player. He was a number 2 pick if I remember. Suh was 1 and he was 2. Then we had Suh for a few years 😄. It’ll all play out just like it is supposed to. Go BUCS!!!!

  23. Tony Says:

Bringing Simeon Rice back even now would still be an upgrade.

  24. Buc Fan in Phoenix Says:

Respectfully speaking I just can’t put a whole lot of weight or merit on what GMC says or recommends. Is there ANYONE he does NOT want the Bucs to pursue in the off season? Bosa just hasn’t been healthy enough to be on the field and that does us no good at all. So NO on Bosa.

  25. lambchop Says:

Joey Bosa’s best days are behind him. We need to get meaner on the D-line. I would not take advice from a cupcake like Gerald on this. LOL.

  26. SteveK Says:

Sign Bosa and Mack, draft a dude and trade for another! Let’s get some sacks from the edge position next season.

  27. JimBobBuc Says:

He’s been the Jamel Dean of the Chargers, so a bad value.

The Bucs should offer him his value based on his recent availability and performance according to Joe:

” Through the last three years, Bosa’s highest sack total for a season was 6.5 in 2023 and he’s averaged just nine games played.” So a contract assuming 9 games and about 6 sacks.

  28. RagingBrisket Says:

Can someone please give Gerald an unpaid internship in a front office so he can stop publicly embarrassing himself with his GM for a day routine?

  29. Marine Buc Says:

At this point Bosa is a mid-tier edge rusher who is injury prone. I would prefer K. Mack over Bosa especially at the right price.

I wouldn’t mind a rotation at OLB that included:

    – Diaby
    – Braswell
    – Bosa or Mack
    – Nelson
    – Shaq Barrett

That sounds pretty solid to me. But I would limit the older guys to @ 40%-50% of the defensive snaps.

Then we can focus the draft on ILB/DB/IDL/IOL/WR.

  30. Watch Daddy Sling It Says:

Landry makes the most sense. Koonce or Browning could be in the mix. Perhaps Sawyer on Day 2.

  31. RagingBrisket Says:

Sign Mack and Landry to rotate with Diaby and Braswell. Draft a pass rusher. Flood the position.

  32. Gipper Says:

Ojulari is the best choice. Still very quick off the ball, youngest, and probably the cheapest.

  33. Marine Buc Says:

    @ DR

I like Harold Landry but there are a few issues:

    – He missed the entire 2022 season with a torn ACL
    – He is not a free agent and the Bucs will have to trade for him (and regardless of reports I don’t believe a 4th round pick will do)
    – His base salary in 2025 and 2026 will be @ $17M but he may want a new deal for even more than that
    – You have to ask yourself why are the Titans OK with letting Landry seek a trade?

I am not against adding Landry but I just don’t think it is realistic at this juncture.

  34. HC Grover Says:

I do not care what McCoy wants.

  35. doolnutts Says:

Totally agree with joe would rather trade for Garrett or get Azeez Ojulari. Bosa will command a lot of money and we don’t know if he will be available, leaving us with the same hole.

  36. Krewe Since Birth Says:

Honestly? I’m tired of McCoy chiming in on what the Bucs need to go get or what they don’t.

Dude… you’re a former NFL player. You understand your stuff… got that part of it.

What you *aren’t* is a front office guy. If you want that job, by all means, apply for it. If you want to have a say in Bucs personnel decisions, that’s what you need to do. Until you get that job, shut… up…

  37. Todd Bowls Says:

Bring back Devin White and play him at edge.

  38. Krewe Since Birth Says:

Also… Bosa is going to San Francisco to play with his brother. You can bank on that.

  39. zzbucs Says:

    GMC is addicted to attention….

He is becoming predictable, and is loosing any credibility, if he ever had one….

  40. It's Corn Says:

Any big name that’s gotten away is probably over the hill. Why else would their current team ditch them?

Better to sign multiple sleepers and hope that one turns into the next Shaq.

  41. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I believe Gerald McCoy is just being a fan and tossing names out there. Bosa might be had very cheep though…and although he would not solve any real issues, I’m thinking at this point he could he decent depth. with limited playing time.

So long as he is dirt cheap…which…thinking about it…I doubt. There is always a team dumb enough to overpay for a name.

  42. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    zzbucs Says:
    “GMC is addicted to attention….”

Anyone with a social media account is addicted to attention. That’s why they exist.

  43. David Says:

If it’s cheap, might be worth a chance. Otherwise, absolutely not. The guy hasn’t been relevant in almost 4 years because of injuries.

  44. Lokog Says:

Go be a fan for your home team mclown those poon tang kittys

  45. Pewter Power Says:

Some people hear a name and automatically think it gives their team credibility. Wasn’t he a back up last year? Vet minimum marker mayfield 1yr deal and I’m all in if he’s ok with not promised a starting job

  46. Daniel Z Says:

Tellitlikeitis – that chip on his shoulder just led to Bosa missing 4 games.

  47. zzbucs Says:

    @Buccaneer Bonzai

Thx for your advice, maybe you made a generalization, but I get you point, not sure you get mine….

GMC recommended Licht every single pass rusher that is either on the trade block or an FA, i think that’s very exaggerated…That’s what i meant.

  48. Joseph C Simmons Says:

Some team is going to overpay for Bosa, so I don’t think he’s a future Buc.

If I’m wrong, I’d love to have him as a rotational player, like the way the Eagles rotate. But his days as a full-time high dollar starter are done.

  49. ElioT Says:

    Bosa’s Career Averages

    Games played per Season: 11.88
    Sacks per Season: 8

    No thank you!

  50. Hearty Dikerson Says:

Assuming LV doesn’t re-sign him, the guy I’d be going after is K’Lavon Chaisson. Former 1st rounder, had a dramatically better season once he left the Jags. Exploded off the screen in the couple Raiders games I saw. Shouldn’t break the bank.

  51. Kenton Smith Says:

Defense Rules, more good stuff. Interior Defensive Lineman are going to Rule the first 50 picks of the draft? That tells me that the whole league is recognizing that the only way to stop these talented offenses is by exerting physical dominance on both lines of scrimmage. Like grandpa used to say “ there ain’t nothing new under the sun”.

  52. SteveK Says:

    Beggars can’t be choosers.

    Our edge is outright toothless.

Myles Garrett, Maxx Crosby, and Trey Hendrickson are all Grizzly Bears, and the Buccaneers edge rushers are gummy bears

  53. ATrain Says:

    Is McSoftie on Joes payroll

Really I know you like this guy
But soft Let’s talk to Suh

    ^^^^^^^
This reminds me of Rod Munch saying that the Bucs HAVE TO keep Jamel Dean, because who else are they gonna get? Uh, with Free Agency and the Draft coming up, the Bucs will have choices.

  55. Mike Johnson Says:

You Gptta wanna be Great fellow Buc fans. And I question our motivation. I’d be all over bosa and a few other right now. If you can get to the QB with your Front 4/ Ohh my God, you got a monster Defense. Like I said, YOU GOTTA WANNA BE GREAT.

  56. Saskbucs Says:

No on Bosa. Much rather have Mack.

  57. ocala Says:

    Sign him

  58. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Whoopi McGoldcoy ladies and gentlemen.
He’s so much more than ice cream, big gums and kimono gowns.

  59. gotbbucs Says:

I liked it better when GMC was in Carolina and didn’t like the Bucs anymore. He was easier to tolerate then.

    GO BUCS

  62. Kenton Smith Says:

If we get 15 sacks off the edge but only 8 are coming from the Defensive end/outside linebacker does that mean we don’t have a successful edge rush?

  63. Kenton Smith Says:

Sometimes the Defensive Tackle stunts to the edge. A corner might blitz from the edge. Even an inside linebacker. We need our defense to look like the Bucs defense that I remember from the turn of the century. I’ve only been a fan for 2 years but all football fans remember those defenses. Get us 3 or 4 studs and we will be the best team in the league.

  64. Rod Munch Says:

    Beggars can’t be choosers.

I for one will not be upset if they sign Joey Bosa. I doubt it will happen, but I certainly won’t be throwing a fit if it does.

  65. BuccaDAWG Says:

Joe I gotta say I’m with you on this one, if we are gonna go in for a pass rusher then listen to JOE on this on. Grab Ojulari he’s younger, not as beat up and still has a Big upside plus he’s a DAWG which seems to payoff on Defensive players( just ask Philly) & as you pointed out if the injuries are a NYG thing we could have a Shaq Barret type QB killa. LISTEN TO JOE on this one

  68. Allbuccedup Says:

Bengals looking to trade Trey Hendrickson 17.5 sacks last 2 years still 30 years old. Trade Dean and a 2nd day pick and a conditional pick 2026. Then sign him to a three year deal I think he went to school at Florida Atlantic.

  69. unbelievable Says:

Bengals just granted Hendrickson permission to seeks a trade.

Would LOVE that (if the price isn’t too much, but I suspect it will be).

  70. LOUBUCSFAN Says:

It’s hilarious how so many commenters like to name call and talk bad about McCoy, but i would bet my entire life’s salary they wouldn’t have the testicular fortitude to say ANY of it to his face… LOL

  71. SteveK Says:

Trade for Hendrickson, sign Mack, let the big dogs eat!

  72. David Says:

    TREY!!!

I would give up two first rounders. With him opposite Yaya and our DT‘s, instant suitable contender.

He is four years younger and more productive than Khalil Mack.
He is the same age and healthy and WAY more productive than Joey Bosa, who has not been relevant since 2021.

The office is there. They have the rest of the draft to find more ILB‘s and DB’s. Do that deal and it is a legit Super Bowl shot for the next 2-3 years.

  73. David Says:

    Allbucedup

Sorry, but you’re out of your mind if you think those draft picks are going to land TREY. They’re looking for probably two first round pics. And I would do it in a heartbeat.

I will gladly take your life’s salary.
Simply arrange the time and place, McWhoopie in place and I will proceed to tell him what a pathetic POS he is.
    BTW, I’m in my 50s, white, 5’-9”/ 195 lbs.
I won’t hold back I can assure you.

Let me know when it’s going to happen.

  75. BigBucsFan Says:

The current situation for the past couple years a good edge rusher is strongly needed. And there is a strong handful of good veteran OLB/EDGE either in free agency or seeking an immediate trade. Given our cap space and capability of building out of the draft Bucs better off just picking up a free agent one that wants to come to a winning team and they’re not overly concerned about the max contract. The player such as Khalil or bosa and drafting edge rusher at number 19 to be mentored by said free agent acquisition is an ideal situation for present and future. To get the veterans play starting week one to help turn around and bolster the defense while passing great knowledge to the younger defenders

  76. BigBucsFan Says:

And douchebag LaRue, at least yourself aware that, you’re a douche
