Gerald McCoy Lobbies Jason Licht For Darius Slay

March 4th, 2025

Gerald McCoy

The herd of Jamel Dean fans seems to be thinning by the day.

Bucs outside cornerback Zyon McCollum is young, explosive and inexpensive. His counterpart, Dean, is turning 29 with steady visits to the Bucs’ medical team, and sporting a massive contract.

Loads of Bucs fans want Dean to move on or cut his paycheck. And it seems retired six-time Pro Bowl Bucs defensive tackle Gerald McCoy is in that pirate ship.

Yesterday on X, McCoy was asking Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht to look closely at the news of Eagles starting cornerback Darius Slay getting released.

Joe gets the Slay interest, but man, just the thought of the Bucs signing Slay for quality cash before or instead of landing a stud edge rusher sends Joe to the toilet to release bodily fluids.

Joe much preferred when McCoy was lobbying for Licht to trade for Myles Garrett.

Why can’t they add a corner AND an edge? They have the cap flexibility to do whatever they want.

  2. Smashsquatch Says:

Hard pass. Love ya GMC, but more cash at corners isn’t the answer

  3. ElioT Says:

Dude’s 34 years old, not sure that would be a wise addition.

  4. RagingBrisket Says:

McCoy should just stop with his annoying lobbying campaigns. Maybe he should get a job in a front office instead of blithering in front of a camera if he wants to affect talent acquisition.

  5. Truth be Told Says:

He may be old-but he is better than any corners on the roster at this time. Anything that can help the 29th rated Puke Defense is a good move. Go Bucs!!

  6. doolnutts Says:

Not that PFF is the end all be all BUT PFF has Dean rated higher than Slay and I am not sure what kind of market Slay will command so over paying him may not be the answer.

I think we need to do whatever we can to add an EDGE. There is a chance we keep Dean and just add another guy early in the draft if we get in EDGE in FA.

  7. adam from ny Says:

    no to slay…

bowles isn’t gonna try to move on slay………nah

  8. BootyLover Says:

Remember, the Bucs drafted Johnthan Banks over his teammate Darius Slay.

  9. FilthyAnimal Says:

A 34 year old corner is nothing more than a highly paid one year bandaid. Pass, unless he’ll accept a below market contract.

Whatever the market is for this guy, he’s almost certainly not worth it when we have several needs to fill.

  10. Bucnjim Says:

Doesn’t make a ton of sense to add a 34-year-old to a team in rebuild mode. There is plenty of talent out there that is younger and eager to prove themselves. Just have to work a little harder to find it!

  11. Saskbucs Says:

Pass on Slay. A 34 year old edge is gonna have way more impact than a 34 year old CB. Mack doesn’t have to leg it 30+ yards with a 22 year old WR.

    Mack – Charvarius Ward – Tyrel Dodson – Ezeriraku rd 1 – BPA (ILB/DB) rd 2 – BPA (ILB/DB/DT/WR/OL) rd 3 – BPA (ILB/DB/DT/WR/OL) rd 4 – BPA round 5.

    Resign Godwin David and Brederson.

Super Bowl Contenders. That’s gonna cash strap us obviously but cap continues to go up and our window is NOW.

  12. ATLBucSolar Says:

Slay is a PI machine. Hard pass. The name sounds good but that is the past Slay.

  13. zzbucs Says:

GMC, Slay is 34 and is not coming cheap, we need money for Godwin an Edge rusher, and Bredesson, also need LB’s at least one…..

Somebody need to explain GMC that this is real football, this is not fantasy

  14. Pewter Power Says:

Damn gummy is pushing hard to spend free agency dollars. The one thing we know is Licht won’t be getting into a bidding war.

  15. buc4evr Says:

He is better than what we have now. If we can get him cheap, then yes, but I would not risk signing Godwin or a potential FA edge like Henderson or Mack.

  16. Buc2Blame Says:

I pray he gets ignored on this one

  17. BucsFan28 Says:

Hard pass on a close to 35 year old corner

  18. geno711 Says:

I would rather take a shot at the other Philly defensive back released. James Bradberry. Did not play at all last year because of injury and younger than Slay.

Maybe a 1 year prove it deal.

    2 million guaranteed t
    then escalators.
1 million for 20 percent of snaps
2 more if playing 50 percent of snaps
2 more if playing 80 percent of snaps

So, a 2 to 7 million range. If he plays 50 percent of team snaps he gets 4 million. If he is playing 80 percent of snaps, he is likely have a very good season and be a steal.

It is probably a miss. But less risky than Randy Gregory and he was much more recently a stud than Gregory.

  19. Oxycondomns Says:

did mccoy take the place of sean king?

  20. Allbuccedup Says:

    Glad Mccoys not the GM.

  21. teacherman Says:

    @booty lover

    1. Great name. I commend you sir.

    2. Great comment.

    3. We drafted Johnathan Banks over the Honey Badger also.

    Banks ran a 4.6.

Ever since Banks and Leonard 4.6 Johnson, I have been unwavering in my belief that a corner must run a 4.5 or less.

  22. Aqualung Says:

Jason might consider Ronde Barber’s opinion about Slay. Maybe. Cool that GMC is a fan and all, but like the rest of us, has an irrelevant opinion to the operations of Jason’s team.

  23. Buc1987 Says:

    No to Slay…shut up GMC.

  24. DoooshLaRue Says:

    As always, STFU Whoopi McSoftburg.

  25. toopanca Says:

Why do people think that Bucs have cap flexibility?

If the Bucs could resign all of their free agents at the Sam salary they were paid, last year, the Bucs would need to borrow about $60 million dollars in future cap space using void years which will lead to more future dead money, and prorated bonuses that drive up the cap hits in the next several years. Where is this money for splash signings supposed to come from? The Bucs need to be scouting their derrières off and finding value, not splash.

Sure, the Bucs could become the Saints. In months 2024, the Saints signed Chase Young to a one year deal. They took a one year cap hit of $3.4 from a salary of $1.1 million and a $2.3 million as part of his prorated salary bonus. But, that came with another $9.1 million in signing bonus prorated over four void year which all really counts against their salary cap this year unless they can resign him before the contract deadline. So, they accounted for about 30% of his real pay against the cap and pushed 70% to this year. They did something similar with Juwan Johnson and Tanoh Kpassagnon for another $8 million in dead cap this year. And, that doesn’t count the Dead Money – $32 million to Lattimore, $9.1 million to Michael Thomas, $7.4 million to Winston.

Their adjusted salary cap is $282 million, but $65 million of this year’s space has already been committed to players to players who are not under contract with the team. And, they are $57 million over the cap already. Plus, they need another $40 million just to sign their unsigned free agents at last year’s salary.
Plus , they face another $51 million in void year contracts next year.

The salary cap has been going up about $20 million doer year, and the Bucs were keeping their void upcoming contracts in about that range. But, control of that already seems to be slipping away.

The scary thing is that Denver, have $40 million in cap space after accounting for $32 million in Dead money to Russel Wilson. If they spent $43 million to resign their free agents at their previous salaries, they would be about even. And, they only have about $50 million in void contracts through 2029, so about $10 million per year. So, they could maintain physical responsibility and free up another $50 million for splash signings if they wanted to. And, that not counting having Wilson’s $32 million off of the books next year.

Seam Payton, with a young team that finished just outside the top ten this year. As a Bucs fan, the only reason that doesn’t give me nightmares – yet – is that he is not just in another division, he is in the other conference. But, I suspect that there are opportunities ahead for smart money on Denver.

  26. Danny Cuebas Says:

No thank you… Mack is 34 and Slay is 34…. no thank you.

  27. gotbbucs Says:

Yep, let’s give him one last paycheck at his most unmotivated point of his career.
