Chris Godwin Is A Popular Man On Social Media

March 6th, 2025

Wanted by fans of many teams.

So as Joe sometimes searches a Bucs player on social media to see if something out there on a guy somehow missed Joe’s radar.

And the following sure got past Joe’s antennae.

Bucs receiver Chris Godwin is a very, very popular guy on Twitter. So Joe searched his name and for a five-hour window that preceded Joe’s search, Joe swears fans of half the teams in the NFL made a case for their team to sign Godwin next week when the free agency dinner bell rings.

That is, if Godwin even gets on the open market. The Bucs have until March 12 — Wednesday — to sign Godwin to avoid taking a large salary cap hit that was due to kick in last month.

Joe is guessing these same NFL fans are not aware of the injury Godwin is trying to overcome. Or maybe they believe Godwin is already healed.

Good teams, rotten teams, average teams, their fans want Godwin. For example, Joe saw two posts where Patriots fans are convinced Godwin is coming to New England.

Why would Godwin go there? He’d be playing for a meathead defensive coach on a terrible team with an offensive coordinator that has proven twice to be a lousy coach unless he was calling plays for Tom Brady.

Hell, even Brady made Byron Leftwich look good.

Again, Joe was tipped off by an NFL suit last week in Indianapolis that Godwin isn’t going to get close to the $20+ million a year contract many outside the NFL world think he will receive. Why? It’s due to his age and injuries, Joe was told.

Then, former Giants and Eagles beat guy Matt Lombardo had an agent tell him Godwin will likely be signing a $13 million a year contract.

So if Godwin stays in Tampa, it appears the Bucs are getting a hometown discount thanks to Godwin’s injuries and a weak market for his services.

Throw in the fact it appears a couple of strong receivers are now available (Seattle’s Tyler Lockett was cut yesterday and then his teammate DK Metcalf said he wanted out), that further flooded the receivers market.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Godwin and I do want him back, but I think it’s time to truly address the position.
We have had the Evans/Godwin show for years.
When we won the SB, neither scored.
Can we reach the SB with those 2 as our #1 and #2 receivers?
Maybe, but not without more help.
Bucky adds to it, but we don’t have a top 10 TE.
I’m simply ready for a change.
    Rip the band aid off.

  2. Trask To The Future Says:

Bucs need to resign Godwin and work out a reasonable deal. He deserves to stay in Tampa.

SIGN JOEY BOSA! There’s a solid pass rusher that we sorely need and wouldn’t have to trade for. He’s had some injuries but would be worth the upside risk.

  3. OHBucFan Says:

We will know soon enough how the Bucs value Chris. One of my all time faves with his ability to make the tough catches for first downs and his impressive willingness to block. Get this one done, along with Bredeson and the focus can be on defense unless a certain WR falls to 19 in the draft. That just might be too tempting to pass up. Free agency activity will help define the draft focus and it starts with Chris.

  4. Hodad Says:

At this stage of his career Godwin shouldn’t be in a rush to sign with any team. It’s a long season, receivers will go down, and not pan out. If I was Chris I’d sit back, and wait for the right opportunity.

  5. heyjude Says:

Was hoping the Bucs were quiet about Godwin’s injury because they were keeping him and didn’t want anyone to go for him. Now feeling as though the injury is worse than we knew. I love Chris and would love to see him stay with the Bucs.

Agree Hodad. Let’s see how this goes too.

  6. Beeej Says:

If he CAN play like last year, he’s worth $20 mil per season. As he’s probably still in the middle of rehab, there’s no way to know. Do a smaller base contract, with reasonable incentives to GET him to $20 mil

  7. Kenton Smith Says:

Thinking that his rehab has gone well and he will be ready to play game one. The problem I see is we won’t be able to match the kind of offers he will be seeing. Let’s hope that he loves it in Tampa enough to stay. We’re a good team without him but we’re a better team with him. These kinds of decisions are why being a General Manager in this league is such a tough job.

  8. Zman Says:

Pass at 13 mil. Two major injuries in the last few seasons, 30 yo. Draft Egbuka, guy is a player. Won’t cost 13 mil. Use that towards Landry or Bosa.

  9. PewterStiffArm Says:

I don’t want to loose Godwin, but if he leaves we definitely have options. If his significant other is chirping in his ear than that’s a different story, she tends to chirp and very loudly. When you chase the most money, sometimes you end up on teams that might not be that desirable. Hopefully, if he does sign with another team, please don’t select the Steelers. Although they need wide receiver help, they have the worst offensive coordinator in the league in Smith. Once you play in a warm weather city does that affect your decision, I don’t know. Florida is paradise, Buffalo, Chicago, Cincinnati, New England, not so much. All these teams could use a Chris Godwin. Jacksonville, right up the interstate, is a very interesting destination. A little less money sometimes goes along way. Especially with someone like Chris that is admired by his Tampa fans.

  10. Krewe Since Birth Says:

My concern is, with not one but two Seattle receivers wanting or getting pushed out, doesn’t that open the door wide to Godwin going there?

  11. Zman Says:

Lockett can still play and will be cheaper than Chris. The draft has some talent in the second and third round, i.e Restrepo. I like that guy.

  12. Daniel Z Says:

Zman, you don’t want to re-sign Godwin at 13 million a year because of injuries but in the same post say we should sign Joey Bosa, who has missed more time and is more injury-prone than Godwin??? Make it make sense.

  13. Zman Says:

Daniel, a DE is way more valuable, than a no wr. Fact. We have little pass rush. Fact. Chris has been hurt a lot. Fact. What’s his status? I don’t recall Bosa blowing an acl or dislocating an ankle. Serious injuries for a wr.

Rice didn’t retire a Niner, nor Montana, neither Lott, Moss didn’t retire a Viking. Sapp not a Buc. It happens. I like Chris, but a player similar can be had cheaper and healthier.

Our O didn’t miss a beat with CG out of the lineup, Fact.

  14. Stanglassman Says:

Chargers fans are acting like signing Godwin is a done deal. Not sure what makes them so confident.

  15. Stanglassman Says:

You’re nuts Zman. CG is a complete WR unlike Locket. 13m yr would be a steal if healthy.

  16. Zman Says:

You must not watch football. Lockett has been a solid player for years. CG will paid, much more than 13 mil.

  17. Zman Says:

And 61 tds and yards per reception for Locket, CG doesn’t have tds. Funny, Spotrac compares Lockett’s salary, age production to Theilen, Evans, Diggs and Woods.

CG was and maybe still is a nice wr, but he’s not complete. Not much break away speed, he’s a slot guy who can all the crossing and dirty routes, that’s why he gets beat up. He had a brutal dislocated ankle. That’s serious.

Lockett is not CG, when CG is healthy. I’m just saying there
are options. Relax. If they sign CG, Stanglasman, you’ll be happy. But, I don’t like 29 yo wr with all and ankle injuries. Oh, if he’s slow to come back or won’t perform like CG of old don’t bitch.

  18. Stanglassman Says:

We will see. Let’s meet back here in a couple of months when they both have their new contracts signed.

What I meant by do it all WR is he can play all over the field. Run any route. One of the best Blocking WRs in the game. He does so much that doesn’t show up in stats but coaches love. I don’t expect every fan even understands.
