Anthony Walker Explains Advice He Got From Lavonte David

March 20th, 2025

New Bucs LB Anthony Walker.

New team. New town. New Bucs linebacker Anthony Walker has a lot to catch up on.

So when he and the Bucs were talking about Walker possibly getting on I-75 North and driving four hours or so from his hometown in Miami to play for Tampa Bay, Walker spoke to his close friend and offseason workout buddy Lavonte David about what may be asked of him.

In short, David told Walker to be ready for anything.

“So one of the first things he told me is to just be ready to go, doing everything – blitzing, coverage, stopping the run, all that stuff,” Walker said.

Walker confessed he is a competitor by nature — with video of him beating his good friend Lavonte David in a race. He promised to post that on social media soon.

So the competitor in Walker was stoked when David texted him Wednesday morning: Buckle up.

“The last thing he texted me just now was, ‘All right. It’s time to get to work,'” Walker said. “I’m like, ‘Dude, it’s still the offseason [laughs]. What’s wrong with you?’

“But that’s just kind of how we always competed, me and Lavonte, in the offseason and everything like that.”

Walker said in so many words, if head coach Todd Bowles wanted a competitor to join his defense, he found one.

    GO BUCS!!!!!

If he’s as good as advertised, we’ll have the luxury of letting Jihad recover fully from his surgery if we pick him in the second or third rd

Lavonte David letting him know…in Tampa, there is no off season for players…or coaches.

  6. Defense Rules Says:

I’m admittedly not sure exactly what we’ve got in Walker, but I’m liking him more & more. At 6’1″ & 235 lbs he’s got decent size for a MLB. Ran a 4.65 sec 40 at his combine years ago, and that was an acceptable speed IMO (KJ Britt, same size, ran a 4.76 at his combine). With 83 starts in his 8-year carer, Walker has some decent experience with Indy (4 years) & Cleveland (3 years) in particular. His career completion percentage allowed of 74.9% impresses me for a MLB.

Question is … How will he do in THIS defense? By every description, Bowles’ defense is more ‘challenging’ than most other defensive schemes. Since the MLB is usually the QB of that defense, Anthony Walker would probably have his hands full adapting this first year IF he gets to start. In any event though, right now he’s probably the front-runner to start come September.

  7. Aqualung Says:

Lavonte wouldn’t vouch for him if he couldn’t at least be average. Britt was so bad I was wishing we would just play dime the whole game.

Looking at his stats, it looks like he has been put on IR the last 4 seasons. I would not go all in on this dude.

  9. BucDawg Says:

Better grab two LBs in the draft. Plenty of talent to be had this year.

LVD is probably done after this season of one and done in the playoffs.

Start planning for the future beyond just band aids.

And while you’re at it, get a good DC and a new HC.

Time to cut the drift wood.

So far so good! We got a new MLB that can cover TEs and RBs.

  11. Baking with Grizz Says:

Campbell learning from these two would be awesome! 🤞

Hey DR, it’s looking like more and more the Bucs are concentrating on Defense. That’s what we want! Also, they need to look at punters and potential kick/punt returners.

  13. California Buc Says:

His attitude is more of what we need. If we get Campbell as ILB with SVD, D. Jones and keeping our numbers 1 and 2 to replace L David next year would be viable.

We also looked solid with Hall, Dean and can get a cover corner from the draft. I believe with a decent pass rush, McCullum will get the 6 INTs he deserves. He is an extremely good CB but the pass rush and poor safety play consistently left him out to dry. For instance, the TD against Atlanta in OT was perfectly played by him but Merriwether was nowhere to be found and the pass rush gave Cousins an unobstructed passing lane. Additionally, Cousins put everything he had on that theow and it barely got in there.
McCullum will be a Pro Bowler this season. For no other reason, this will be his final year on his rookie contract.
    Go TBB!

Preparation shows up on game day. Wise words from Levonte David. I guess that’s a reason why Levonte is so good, huh.

  15. garro Says:

Hats off to LVD but does this guy get it? He has me worried. Off season?

    Maybe I missed the joke.

    Go Bucs!
