A Call To Unite Josh Grizzard And Jon Gruden
March 17th, 2025
Rookie Bucs playcaller Josh Grizzard.
An ex-Buccaneer is trying to arrange a study session.
Retired quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick wants to marry Jon Gruden and rookie Bucs playcaller Josh Grizzard for a day of film breakdown and mentoring.
Fitzpatrick hosted Gruden on his Fitz & Whit podcast and point blank told the Super Bowl-winning Bucs coach that he’s got to bring Grizzard to his football lair in Tampa. Gruden often hosts ex-player and coaches at all levels of the game to study with him.
“I need to connect you with Josh Grizzard,” Fitzpatrick told Chucky. “Young guy, really smart dude that’s been in a few different systems, and I think he can learn a lot from you and you’d help him out a lot. So I would like to hopefully bridge that gap for you guys.”
Gruden seemed open to it and Joe is confident Grizzard is smart enough to be all over it.
Remember, Grizzard and Fitzpatrick have a relationship dating back to Fitzpatrick mentoring him in Miami.
Joe was always amazed that former Bucs tight end O.J. Howard passed on opportunities to sit down with Buccaneers Ring of Honor tight end Jimmie Giles, per Sage of Tampa Bay Sports Ira Kaufman. And Joe knows former Bucs cornerback Vernon Hargreaves didn’t seek out legend Rondé Barber early in his career for insight, even thought Barber was often at team headquarters.

There are certain people that get it and others that don’t and never will. If you are a corner back you pass on an opportunity to learn from Ronde? Or any truly great player.

Yeah Gruden was never successful at anything after winning Super Bowl with Dungy’s team. [Wasn’t Father Dungy’s team. Check the offensive roster — Joe] He’s just another loudmouth that should not be allowed access to the team. Pimp somebody else

Probably not a bad idea, but I think he would benefit a lot more from a weekly meeting with Arians for a month……… Ariens is a wealth of knowledge and simplifies the game……… Grudens a wealth of knowledge, but he does anything but simplify it……….. Tom Moore is getting up there but he has seen it all as has Fitz

Gruden is one of the best offense designers and play callers. This is a great idea. Hire him as a consultant/mentor so he can bounce ideas off of Gruden weekly.

Grudens offenses here in Tampa averaged 1 point more than the various coordinators under Dungy.
Including Mike Shula.
Grudens time has passed.

If anything get Grizz up to speed on play calling and time management will be crucial to pulling this off, Jon was one of the youngest to to OC at the Eagles at 32 to go on to be the youngest to win SB at the time wealth of knowledge both good and bad what to and what not to do. This really should be done with the team praising it. GO BUCS!

dumb idea. Grizzard was exposed to a lot of offensive minds, he doesn’t need another voice chiming in that he has to convince he knows what he’s doing.
It’s not Waterboy, Gruden won’t have some super secret special book of plays to give him.

Gruden could certainly provide a laundry list of things you would NOT want to say in an email.
March 17th, 2025 at 12:26 pm
Just don’t let Gruden in the draft room or anywhere near Licht when discussing remaining free agents.

@Dewey-
Exactly what I was thinking. Gruden was a personnel disaster.

Would definitely be a smart move to invite any ex Bucs into the building well almost. Moving wants to see Kellen Winslow
March 17th, 2025 at 1:12 pm
I think he would confuse him. Keep pretty much the same as last year but add your own wrinkles.
March 17th, 2025 at 1:12 pm
as they say, always take a meeting but in this case don’t go out of your way to solicit the invitation Grizzard
March 17th, 2025 at 1:49 pm
And OJ Howard is out of the NFL, taking a job as an asset coach at West Alabama
March 17th, 2025 at 2:17 pm
Gruden’s offense’s here in Tampa were underwhelming
Gruden’s Offense in Oakland/Vegas were not tearing up the league either
Grizz was on staff and integral for the 3rd down offense last year for a top 10 offense. I am not sure he needs Gruden
March 17th, 2025 at 3:00 pm
I don’t know about Howard but Hargreaves was a complete jerk and idiot not to pick at Barbers brain. But then Hargreaves would never been able to pick Barbers brain for his intangibles, including his character, since Hargreaves had none.
March 17th, 2025 at 3:27 pm
Don’t really think Grizz is going to need Chucky’s advice. 🤣
March 17th, 2025 at 7:17 pm
Gruden’s offense wasn’t great- and it sure isn’t more modern now. Stay clear and focus on your own plays.
March 17th, 2025 at 8:13 pm
Gruden had his time. Grizzard has learned from guys like Mike McDaniel and Liam Cohen, who have run modern day successful offenses. The game progresses every year, and not everyone keeps up. Gruden is a wealth of obsolete knowledge.
March 17th, 2025 at 8:49 pm
Football is football. Not all of Grudens knowledge is obsolete. Grizzard should be able to separate “the wheat from the chaff”.
March 17th, 2025 at 9:45 pm
Bring Gruden in. He can provide ideas and advice. It would be smart.
March 17th, 2025 at 10:50 pm
I don’t know about all that. I love Groden, but he couldn’t figure out how to get two star receivers the ball at the same time for an entire season. His whole offense operates on three levels and 90% of it as a check down.
March 18th, 2025 at 6:56 am
Yeah right like that is gonna happen. LOL
Fitzpatrick has become yet another on the long list of former players trying deparately to be relevent to the game. Most are just sad. He and Simms have turned it into annoying.
Go Bucs!
