What To Expect From Josh Grizzard
February 1st, 2025So the Bucs have their man, Josh Grizzard to run the offense. What can we expect?
A lot of fans wanted “continuity.” It may not be that simple.
Fans know the NFL is a copycat league. Defenses have all offseason to study a team’s offense, what it did well, and how to stop it. So in reality, “continuity” is sort of a bad thing. The league catches up too quickly.
Bucs coach Todd Bowles has often said he changes up things regularly on defense for that very purpose (maybe he doesn’t do enough?).
So a few weeks into the season, Grizzard’s offense should be pretty well understood.
Could the Bucs offense be just as lethal? Perhaps, but Joe doesn’t think those expectations are fair to Grizzard. Liam Coen did one of the best coaching jobs Joe has seen in a while.
Think about it: With a rookie center, a rookie No. 3 receiver (for the most part) and a rookie running back, Coen took a running attack that for two straight years was the worst in the NFL and turned it into the No. 4 running attack. That is just absurd.
Then, with an offense largely without Chris Godwin and three games without a Hall of Fame receiver Mike Evans, the Bucs were third overall in passing (250 yards a game). That’s just nuts.
Grizzard could to improve on that, but those expectations are unfair for a guy calling offensive plays and running an offense for the very first time in his career. At least Coen had experience doing this in the SEC.
Joe does think it is reasonable to expect Grizzard’s offense to be top-10. Those rookies should improve — if only because they have a full season of NFL football under their belts.
Grizzard did spend two years as a quality control guy with Mike McDaniel. And McDaniel, like his mentor Kyle Shanahan, knows how to craft a run game.
But really, how much of that seeps down to a quality control coach, which is what Grizzard was with McDaniel?
Joe sure hopes whatever Grizzard absorbed from Coen and McDaniel is flushed out on Sundays.

Very excited! Continuity is good.

Do not get blindsided by *QA Coach* right here. Assistant coaching lines are blurry and the important part here is NOT his job title, but that he was retained. He was WR coach before that with the Dolphins and he was responsible for Jaylen Waddle’s rookie year. That’s a pretty damn good job. And when McDaniels came in he did a coaching sweep. And KEPT Grizzard despite brining in his own guy in Wes Welker. There’s a lot about Grizzard people miss because it requires research. But believe me, this is the best hire we could have made. And you’ll see so.

It’s not just the x’s and o’s – it’s also about the Jimmys and Joes…
If Godwin returns and we plug that hole at LG the Bucs offense will be good to go.

Guess you forgot how improved our third downs were this past season. Give the man credit that he earned. People can’t just talk themselves into a. OC position, they have to show an ability somewhere in their resume. Glad we have him this year. GO BUCS

My question is was the offense all Coen or was it Coen calling plays from a game plan that Grizzard and the other offensive assistant help put together. From what I read, Grizzard put together the 3rd down offense and that was a big part of the Bucs success on offense in 024
February 1st, 2025 at 8:36 am
The Bucs were missing their best offensive player for almost the entire season. Godwin was playing out of his mind prior to the injury. If he comes back fully healthy this offense could be even better. I hope the Bucs are active in free agency to help supplement the draft on the defensive side of the ball. If they do that I would not have a problem if they took Tyler Warren in the first. Doubt he will fall to 19 but if he did man our offense would be lethal.

If we end up with a top 10 Offense…just from the statistical side…I’ll be impressed. More than what he can do with the top tier guys on Offense, I hope he can develop a plan B and Plan C for the times his QB is out for 3 weeks or both his starting Guards are down. Adjusting your game plan and scheme to fit your available players seems to be where the defense failed this yr. Let’s hope this guy can juggle everything and be successful. Let’s Go Grizz!

i expect the sizzle from the grizzle, my nizzle……..oh wait maybe snoop dog said that

The only constant for the offense the last two years has been Baker Mayfield. Same was true in Cleveland where he got his OC, Freddie Kitchens, promoted to head coach. Mayfield in 2025 will exceed his 2024 performance.

all todd bowles should say is keep things rolling yale man…do as liam would do…and if you don’t know what the f he would do, just go home and study up on it…
hit the film room…like bucky and tom moore getting to work early in the morning…
get the system down to a science…and then see if you can add a twist of your own magic potion on top – to make it even better…

If this team has to win and lose based on the performance of 1st time NFL offensive coordinators every single year with, a seasoned Head Coach/DC running the show, then this organization is missing the plot.
At some point, injuries or not, Bowles needs to put something respectable in the field that can play well for four full quarters. I don’t blame the players at all. They’re playing inside his scheme with his play calls.

I would think that continuity in the playbook should help players execute, while changes in how and when plays are used would keep other teams’D from locking in.

Our offense are doing well. We did miss not having Godwin most of the season and other players did step up. In the end the Bucs are looking really good. I am excited about Grizz taking it on. Can’t wait to see what other changes are on the horizon.

The next 2026 NFL top head coaching prospect! lol!

Good grief football is about the same as it was 20 year ago. it aint rocket science. The Griz will do fine. Line up and beat them down.
February 1st, 2025 at 10:01 am
Kind of surprised I haven’t seen anything from Baker on all this
February 1st, 2025 at 10:25 am
Reading Josh Grizzard’s wiki page is considered ‘research’ to some fans. 😉

He’s a Josh I trust him lmao…
February 1st, 2025 at 10:34 am
I think the improved line play and Bucky had as much to do with the turn around as Coen.
February 1st, 2025 at 11:03 am
Gipper. Please stop with your Baker takes he’s a ok quarterback but he’s not elite at all. You must be a Baker bro lol 🤣🤣

Colonel Angus
You not only have the best moniker on this site you nailed it with that last point.
Both the COEN hatred as well as the idolatry are OVER THE TOP!!!
“With a rookie center (PUHLEEZE the entire OL was vastly improved over what Canales had!,
a rookie No. 3 receiver (for the most part) I concede that for THE FIRST HALF OF THE SEASON! JMAC was on fire the homestretch run for the playoffs when it counted!
“and a rookie running back,”(This is the worst excuse of the three!!! The “rookie” running back “looks” like the second coming of Barry Sanders. Time will tell! But let’s compare their rookie seasons to show it’s truly absurd to think Coen was creative or restrained because of Bucky!!!
Bucky 5-10 195 Barry 5-8 203 Very close, Bucky has time to add 5-10 more lbs
Rookie season Barry 280 rushes for 1470 5.3 average
Bucky 207 rushes for 1122 5.4 average !!!
So not only wasn’t Coen handicapped, he couldn’t even recognize talent until it slapped him in his face over and over. Do we forget that the fans were way ahead of Coen on this!!! And who was he starting? R White a guy I like and believe is solid, but he’s not a star!!!
Out of 17 games Bucky only started THREE!!! I acknowledge hindsight is 20/20 but that simply is criminal for an OC!!!
Coen was very good…he wasn’t great and he didn’t even get the most out of the talent he had. How many times did Baker have to go old school and literally lower his helmet and attempt to bash his way forward?
Dragging out yet another musical reference…from the Beatles
It’s getting better all the time
Better, better, better
It’s getting better all the time
Better, better, better

Oneilbuc,
Mayfield is elite and is on his way to a HOF career. His 2024 season is the very definition of elite. His 41TD passes , 4500pass yards, and 71% completion rate has only been accomplished by 3 other QB’s in NFL history.
By the way for all of the Baker doubters, Tom Brady INT’s in his first full 7 years were 86. Mayfield in his first full 7 years equal 90.

@stpete
Agree with many of your points.
My biggest gripe with Coen is that in games when our offensive starters weren’t active, especially at TE, guys like Culp and Durham stepped up and played great. As soon as Otton was healthy, the rest of the depth chart rarely saw the field.
I applaud Coen and Company’s ability to alter the offense to fit the guys that were active any given week and still be successful, but i hated seeing guys put in great work when they were needed, only to be relegated back to the bench as soon as the weren’t. Great offensive play callers like Andy Reid continue to get the Justin Watson’s of the world involved even when they aren’t a focal point. That’s how you maximize a roster and don’t have massive production letdown when injuries happen in-game.

Agree completely. I’ve been asking how the OC will be able to find enough footballs to feed all the hungry mouths…LOTS of targets including an HOFer who has certainly earned the lions share of the touches, but then there’s Bucky, JMAC, Otton and you mentioned Culp and Durham.
You just answer my question. It requires a GREAT coach with a GREAT QB to manage the load. Andy Reid is the best in the game right now.
Let’s hope Griz has the answer.

The biggest factor in all of this is the guy with the ball in his hands every offensive play. Go Mayfield.

“What To Expect From Josh Grizzard”
Success! Top 5ish offense. Griz will likely get a HC interview or 2 next offseason….
And it won’t be because he’s some masterful schemer, adjuster, playcaller (hopefully he is at least good at all of those) – it will be because Grizz has the PLAYERS to GET IT DONE – whatever the scheme or game plan du jour….
Top 10 QB
Top 5 OLine
Top 5 WRs (Godwill WILL be back)
Top 5 RBs
And a good solid group of young TEs
Any playcaller worthy of that title will have much success leading this offensive group that Jason Licht has assembled/maintained.
February 1st, 2025 at 2:05 pm
So this Grizzard is in the room and meetings for Liams calls all year, and then he dips, but in essence didn’t he leave the play book behind with all the answers!? U know now what blocking schemes made the run game go from dreadful to fearful, just cheat off the test left on the desk! The answers are now there, tweek what u will but use the info that made offensive a success and build on that! The players know what worked ,o-line blocking , route trees etc, add a little flair and keep on moving!
February 1st, 2025 at 3:44 pm
It’s now time to let the offense adjust to the new OC. Let’s move on to fixing a broken defense! Find a middle linebacker who can cover on passing downs, find another quality corner, find another quality safety, and find a quality edge rusher,
Also, figure out how to keep the tarters available on game day instead of watching from the sideline in street clothes. Come on!!
February 1st, 2025 at 7:33 pm
Gipper. Fans like you are the only reason why Kyle Trask ain’t the starter right now. Jason Licht and Todd Bowles made a business decision to gift Baker Mayfield the starting job it was not a football decision. Baker had a good year this year but question still remains can you win a Superbowl with Baker Mayfield or can you at least get to the NFC Championship with Baker Mayfield as your starter?
February 1st, 2025 at 9:07 pm
About all I could add is who is going to join in to help grizz.
We either had to move grizz up or watch him leave for Jacksonville, so will still have another big hire. And if grizz does well becomes a he, its a rinse and repeat or maybe we’d get Coen back as he will fail in Jacksonville imo.
February 2nd, 2025 at 6:46 am
“but question still remains can you win a Superbowl with Baker Mayfield or can you at least get to the NFC Championship with Baker Mayfield as your starter?”
That’s a question that only a few teams know for sure since Mahomes has wiped out the competition.
A bigger question is whether Trask can even play in the NFL much less succeed.
A tiny question is whether Oneill will finally admit his postings have been wrong.
NO JW was not and is not a star QB in the NFL. We all have eyes O’Neill.
And NO Trask did not beat out Mayfield, who was not gifted the job! Business decision? Are you serious. The ONLY thing that drives “business” in the NFL is WINNING! Bowles made his decision based on all the evidence he had including experience versus total lack of experience. Trask has done NOTHING compared to Mayfield’s career at any point. NO Heisman! Not a #Overall pick helll not even a first rounder, had a decent season at UF. Big efffing deal.
Do you realize what you’re doing? You’re comparing a guy who has SUCCEEDED at two different franchises, one of the the garbage can known as Cleveland to a guy who has done what?
I could drown you in Baker achievements, as many have already done. What “achievements” does Trask have on HIS resume?
