Robert Hainsey Will Bolt In Free Agency: “He’s Leaving. It’s Over”

February 15th, 2025

The Bucs will be hunting for a new backup center. Tampa Bay fans won’t have Robert Hainsey to pick on any longer.

That was the word from All-Pro left tackle Tristan Wirfs, who says Hainsey is his best friend.

“He’s going to go play somewhere. There’s not 31 centers in the league better than him. We talked about it all year. ‘He’s like. I’m going to leave. I’m not going to be here next year,’ Wirfs said of Hainsey on the The Pivot podcast.

Wirfs mentioned how Hainsey struggled mentally after the Bucs drafted center Graham Barton to replace him but was an ultimate teammate who worked steadily to help Barton.

Joe remembers Hainsey getting one start last season and absolutely dominating at New Orleans.

It’ll be interesting to see what Hainsey’s market is in free agency. Wirfs may be overvaluing his buddy, so Joe isn’t ruling out a return of the Bucs’ 2021 third-round pick.

The Pivot co-host Ryan Clark asked Wirfs about his embrace and loving words for Hainsey caught on camera after the Bucs lost to Washington in the playoffs.

“It was kind of the realization that he’s leaving. It’s over,” Wirfs said.

  1. Beeej Says:

He’s right, I’m sure there’s at least a half dozen teams happy to have him for a starter

  2. Redzone Says:

Hainsey looked fine en route to 50 vs NO and Barton could have started at LG last season (remember the Licht/Spytek gap in messaging?) But Bowles wanted to be “stronger at the point of attack” right? Hanging onto Devin White, Rashad White, JTS, Britt as key players but moving on from Suh, Hainsey, refusing to start Diaby until late, watts, Ramirez, other LBs that supposedly weren’t ready after a yr in the system – add talent evaluation to the list of frustrations with TB as HC. Just need to coach it better and play it better.

  3. ATrain Says:

Bowles seems to be a very likeable guy. Good Coach

He IS NOT A HEAD COACH

Bucs will not make a SuperBowl run with Bowles

  4. Bojim Says:

He has a lot of best friends.

  5. stpetebucsfan Says:

The Bucs will miss Hainsey’s talent, smarts, and awesome attitude.

Who needs guys with great ‘tudes right if we can simply get ONE player who is an edge rusher. Guys like Hainsey will not be missed by the “One player” crowd because they have such little respect for guys who play alongside that “ONE” guy.

This is where the NFL salary cap meets the road. Probably cost the Chiefs a 3 peat because they had no depth when it came to fixing the critical LT spot on an otherwise very talented OL.

It’s hard to assemble a winning roster! Assembling one with depth is even harder!!!

If Hainsey leaves I hope he gets his starting gig. I just hope it’s in the AFC!

  6. stpetebucsfan Says:

Could we have one, just one post without the Todd obsessed crowd yammering their ignorance?

Why bother having comments here for some dolts.

WE GET IT!!! ANYTHING BAD THAT HAPPENS TO THE BUCS IS TODD BOWLES PERSONAL FAULT!!!

ANYTHING GOOD MUST BE FILL IN THE BLANK. (ANYBODY BUT TODD)

Yesterday somebody even dismissed Todd being DC of a SB winning team saying it was BA who MADE him run his D.

Again! I do NOT think TB is an HOF coach!! I see his weaknesses but I ALSO see his strengths. But that’s all just OPINION! I RESPECT his successes. Even those hidden in some bad results like being the only coach since Ryan to win TEN games with the Jets. Nobody here wants to here that but they literally have gone to Redditt to find NY Jets fans opinions about Todd after his firing!!!

IE AGAIN…people are busting their humps to find the negative while absolutely ignoring the positive. I’ll give this a rest when you losers stop with the mad disrespect!

  7. Beeej Says:

If the Chiefs had Justin Skuule they’d have been golden. Pity there was no way we could rent him

  8. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Robert Hainsey is probably one of the best backup centers in the league and proved to be a starter. With that said, a lot of good centers have been pick in the third through fifth rounds. I think the Bucs can draft a replacement for him in the later rounds.

  9. Redzone Says:

Call it as I see it stpete. I give Bowles credit for adjusting his D and helping to bring another SB ring to Tampa. But he was anointed HC and this team deserves better than a .500 record and winning the NFCS as the tallest of the pygmies the last few years. Tampa has always had goober fans willing to suckle at the teet of mediocrity- but keep calling me and others wanting something better to root for ignorant. “I think the Bucs are great!”

  10. Elder Pirate Says:

Hainsey isnt just another guy. He is going to get a solid starting center contract with one of the teams out there.

  11. Tavvy Says:

You are absolutely right,STPETE,the ignorance is deafening!SMDH

  12. teacherman Says:

    @bojim

He has a lot of best friends because he’s a good friend.

You would be lucky to have a friend like Tristan Wirfs in your life.

But haters like you are loveless. You don’t have friends.

  13. Marine Buc Says:

The idea of moving G. Barton to LG and allowing Hainsey to start at C was intriguing to me. But if Hainsey moves on I’m fine with that.

He was always one of the worst ranked starting centers in the NFL when he had his shot.

Our GM can re-sign Bredeson and draft a IOL in rounds 3-5 if needed…

  14. Fred Says:

So much hate! Time to call Dr. Phil for a consultation. And on Valentine’s Day yet.

  15. Marine Buc Says:

IMO – Hainsey is not really athletic enough to play center, too small/not strong enough to play guard and has the wrong build to play tackle.

    I wish him well.

  16. Allen Lofton Says:

Hainsey is a sure fire Center for teams like the Kansas city who desperately need new offensive lineman.
I believe Tristan statement He’s gone! And who could claim him. Best of luck!!!

  17. stpetebucsfan Says:

    RedZone

“Ignorant” is a strong word I’d suggest misguided.

EG. “But he was anointed HC and this team deserves better than a .500 record and winning the NFCS as the tallest of the pygmies”

Annointed means he did not deserve the promotion. That’s simply disrespectful.
He wasn’t a relative of the Glazers, as far as I know he had no blackmail material on JL, he was I suspect a “friend” of BA’s who IS known for his loyalty.

But you fail to point out that he was the only HC to win TEN with the miserable Jets in the past decade!

“Deserve” a better than .500 record. Currently Todd’s record IS .529 with the Bucs and has IMPROVED every year!! He has now passed Chucky as the 3rd winningest (only 4 have winning %s) coach in Bucs history.

He’s…er HIS TEAM..has won the Division title EVERY year he’s been HC! Again you can do all you wish to diminish that with “NFCS the tallest of pygmies” some outrageous hyperbole designed to diminish the Bucs and especially Todd’s ACTUAL SUCCESS.

BTW the second place team from that “pygmy division” actually won the SB a few years back as you may recall since it was the Bucs and Bowles as DC ( Yeah I know not Todd he was just following BA’s instructions)

But the worst part is the lengths that some will go to diminish Todd’s success with their opinions! RESULTS ARE RESULTS.

How about this opinion? IMHO the NFL parity has made it really tough to field a great team in consecutive seasons much less a run of them. This makes Andy Reid’s achievements all the more remarkable!

My opinion is not an outlier. Some here actually suggested Todd was poor because he inherited an SB Defense. Really? Suh and JPP were choppled liver?
DW45 lost his mind a few years after an incredible SB post season. AW31 became the highest paid Safety in the league because he is great and a game changer…WHEN healthy. Speaking of health Dean and Davis went AWOL after the SB frequently dissappearing into the training room and whirlpool.

But intead of heaping praise and appreciating the freaking AMAZING job JL yes AND Todd have done keeping the Bucs even relevant people keep asserting absurd expectations and then blaming the failure to reach unreal expectations on ONE guy.

Yes everybody is entitled to their opinion! It just saddens me to be on a blog with the very name “Bucsfan” in it yet not cheer the team’s successes but actually go out of the way to DIMINISH those successes.

YES I’m a HOMER!!! Yes I like to see the positive and not dwell on the negative. But after all the years out there competing I RESPECT SUCCESS and admire those who do what they can with what they have!

  18. Todd Bowls Says:

It will be interesting to see if former Bucs OC Liam Coen or Dave Canales or LV GM John Spytek makes a run to sign Robert Hainsey or any of the other Bucs free agents given their chance to see them train and play up-close.

Good Luck to Hainsey. If we re-sgn LG Ben Brederson, he can occasionally fll in at Center and the Bucs should be OK. If Brederson signs elsewhere then the Bucs might bring back Sua Opeta at LG or promote Elijah Klein to fill the LG slot. Jason Licht can use his magic to add a backup C in the 4th or 5th round.

  19. FilthyAnimal Says:

    Redzone,
Lots of people have their doubts about Bowles, but don’t use an unrelated thread to spew their complaints. We’ve all heard the same shyte a million times, so save it for the next Bowles thread. It doesn’t belong in a post about our backup center.

  20. Redzone Says:

I’m good with homers – but the last cpl years this team could beat anybody, or lose to anybody – and that difference could be attributed to coaching and development – this team is treading water instead of learning to swim. I would love to see Bowles succeed, but he has to be willing to adapt, and it’s beyond frustrating, kinda demoralizing to watch the inevitable unfold because we know he refuses to change.

Did anyone not see the end of the KC, SF, and WAS playoff games coming? We saw it in CLE w/ Brady at QB! He’s getting out chessed by Cousins and Cooper Rush?

Bring in a DC (Marcus Freeman?) and be the HC – focus on game mgt and overseeing player development instead of sticking your nose in the gameplan every week – hold your players accountable if they’re playing off coverage 10 yards deep instead of doing what you told them to do – idk man but do something different – the fans know there’s a window coming but it wont get any easier vs a stacked Eagles roster and Jayden Daniels just scratching the surface- let alone DET and MIN clocking 12+ win seasons

No disrespect but there was no interview process that I’m aware of after Brady fired BA = anointed – here’s to an offseason dedicated to defense, and may Bowles come roaring to the top with a buffet of crow!

  21. Redzone Says:

You’re right Filthy good luck to Hainsey

  22. Permanently Moderated Says:

Did Hainsey forget how to play tackle?

  23. Ha-Ha-Ha Says:

    Forget Spytek and Raiders.
They drafted and started JPJ, the center all the JBFs wanted last year.
KC should have kept D. Smith around. Maybe not the best tackle, but he was always
    available.
I grumbled about Hainsey but before last years draft I looked back and realized Hainsey
didn’t miss time and was playing with scraps and patches beside him.
He’s probably better than y’all give him credit. Wasn’t Jensen a FA pickup? Someone may just
get the same type of bargain.

  24. Zoocomics Says:

Hainsey does well in a spot start against New Orleans and all of a sudden, he wasn’t the problem on the offensive line for the past 2 seasons?

Ugh… I’m not saying he was the sole problem, but he was one of the core common denominators on that line in 2022 and 2023 post-Ryan Jensen. In Brady’s last season, Tom never looked comfortable with the entire offensive interior Oline being replaced. And yet, JBF made it their mission to call out guys like White for most of the problems we had at RB during that stretch that led to us being ranked last in running. Never mind that Brady wasn’t exactly lighting it up himself as he did in his 2 previous years. A lot of that had to do with his protections. And per usual because context is important to these discussions, we will truly never know how Hainsey and/or White would have been in 2024 with a new more experienced OC, as both these guys ended up in supporting roles, and/or as a backup.

If Hainsey wasn’t a concern, why draft a center in round 1, then start him the whole season? Despite some rough snaps by Barton, the kid is a mauler and will be a stud for us for the next 10 years. We will see when Hainsey gets another chance to start how long he sticks as a starter. To me, he reminds me more of a Evan Dietrich-Smith, not bad as a spot starter, but he’s not going to carry a 17-game load.

  25. JimBobBuc Says:

I hoped that Hainsey could compete at LG with Bredeson and Opeta and Newman. Hainsey might improve working with Carbs and Pic, and he’s also been healthy compared to Opeta. Hainsey always hustled and was there to pick up our RB, I will miss him and wish him well.

  26. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Zoo

    Exactly!

Look at the ACTIONS of our trusted GM last off-season…

    – Used our first pick to draft a Center.
    – Used our 6th round pick on IOL E. Klein.
    – Signed free agent LG Bredeson
    – Signed free agent IOL Opeta.

It doesn’t seem our “trusted” GM had any faith in Robert Hainsey.

Sorry – I don’t care how nice of a guy Hainsey is.

    He just wasn’t good enough.

    Adios amigo.

  27. Doug RR Martin Says:

I wonder if Barton should move to guard and we keep Hainsey to start at C. Barton would probably be ideal at G. It would be less costly than paying Bredeson. And if Hainsey goes down Barton now has C experience.

  28. Kenton Smith Says:

Bredeson is a serviceable center, and we’ve got depth at left guard. Just hate losing guys like Hainsey. Hope he finds success wherever he lands.

  29. NJbucs23 Says:

Not athletic enough to be a center in the league. We witnessed it for 2 years.

  30. Redzone Says:

I think they feel he doesn’t have the anchor to play on the interior and Goedeke just passed him up – too bad – that ‘21 draft is turning out to be be pretty forgettable but OL is least of their worries – I’d be darn tempted to take Gray Zabel though – that North Dakota line coach must be the bomb

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Bowles may not be the proper sort of head coach some like, but he is still a good head coach. His team is mentally strong, and he doesn’t bully them to get them there.

Hainsey leaving is actually a good sign that he feels Barton too good to take his spot.

The idea to have had Barton move to LG is stupid. The oline may not have been as good last year if the Bucs had done that. Doing it the way they did gave us a top oline.

So you can claim it was handled wrong, but you would be wrong.

  32. Badbucs Says:

Hainsey wanted rb money from being so far off the line in the backfield. Poor Rascaad knows Hainsey ‘s butt like the back of his hand he’s seen it in his face so much. Good team guy and backup but I won’t miss him. Stick Klein or Opeta in there at LG and if Brederson comes back at fair money he can be backup center.

  33. David Says:

No one is picking on him anymore. Is a great backup for the depth… But he proved he was not starting quality.
I wish him good luck, get out of the division

  34. Badbucs Says:

    Raschaad

  35. stpetebucsfan Says:

“and that difference could be attributed to coaching and development”

Thanks for making my point RedZone. Yes it could, with COULD being the operative word. And you chose one of several “COULDs” without even mentioning other “Coulds”.

It COULD be attributed to the loss of Suh, JPP, DW45, Shaq, two physically unreliable Cornerbacks and the loss of the highest paid safety in the league.

It COULD be attributed to being “anointed” into a horrible no win situation with a GOAT struggling with the loss of his football skills, his wife and family, and not even wanting to play for the Bucs that last year. Stuck with the anointed OC Leftwich. Do we consider Griz now anointed since he came from within and obviously has friends in high places? Or COULD it be that’s pretty much the way it goes with all successful organizations?

It also COULD be that JL and TB have done an amazing job of surviving all those challenges! It could be that on any given Sunday any team can win and all the caterwauling over Divisions is just claptrap and noise!

It COULD be that indeed YOUR or at least MY Tampa Bay Bucs have done a remarkable and entertaining job of surviving the normal Post SB blues, with loss of a franchise QB replaced by a guy that half this group wanted run out of town on a rail, who turns out to be the real deal! Finding not one but two decent OC’s. Rebuilding an OL to being even better than before. Discovering Kancey and YaYa and McCullough and Tykee and others I’m forgetting.

It’s famously said that two things can be true at the same time. Yes Todd and JL have made mistakes as DID BRADY, as do we all! It is also true that the Bucs HAVE WON 4 consecutive Division titles, advanced past the first round two years ago and took a resurgent Washington team down to a last second FG. BTW those “coulds” also happen to be FACTS!

YES everybody is entitled to their opinion. I just remained amazed at why so many choose the WORST possible interpretation instead of the best?

  36. Crickett Baker Says:

SPBF, I am really enjoying your rants! 🙂 They COULD be the most uplifting ones on here.

  37. Aqualung Says:

Depth is hard to keep. After his saints game I was thinking to keep him starting at LG when Barton came back. Hell even tackle – he couldn’t have been worse than the Drule.

  38. FilthyAnimal Says:

I don’t remember if Sua Opeta was also a backup center candidate or if he was strictly a guard. They can get him back on another cheap deal. Hate to see Hainsey go, but good for him if he can find a starting job out there, which he almost certainly can.

  39. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Crickett

Thanks! I realize I’m not for everyone but it’s good to know that not everyone is turned off either.

  40. cmurda Says:

It’s simply the smart move by Hainsey as well as the Bucs. Nothing but love and good luck to Hainsey. True pro. Handled some really tough adversity like a true man. A man’s man.

  41. cmurda Says:

Crickett, spbf puts his soul into these posts.

  42. stpetebucsfan Says:

    cmurda

Yes it’s part of growing older I think. You realize in a very real way what all of you know…we only have THIS MINUTE. At a certain age enough people tell you how old you are, you’re body tells you, and finally your brain catches up.

EG. I had a guy marvel at the swimming I do at Northshore with the honest exclamation..”at YOUR age…77!!!” I’m acutely aware that this may be the end and so I DO pour my soul into almost everything I do. So thanks I take that as the highest compliment.

  43. Kenton Smith Says:

stpetebucsfan if we didn’t have passion for life we’d be missing out, wouldn’t we! I followed Baker over here a couple of years ago, because I like the passion he plays the game with. And he’s playing with a handful of guys that see it the same way. As long as we have some players and fans who have that passion I’m gonna be one Passionate BucsFan!

  44. Ke Says:

He’ll be a JAG next year

  45. Tucker Says:

I don’t think fans are oblivious to the good traits in bowels they just don’t think it out weighs the bad when it comes to what they think a coach needs to win a Superbowl. Fans get so much in their their feels about what they already believe but I believe most of this blog is just to rant which I appreciate good fan therapy. Go bucs!

  46. Gipper Says:

With salary cap, can’t keep them all. Let’s find out about guard, Elijah, that was drafted last year. He is low cost and might make a decent swing man.

  47. cmurda Says:

You should spbf. I meant it as one.

  48. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Kenton

I agree that Baker playing like there’s no tomorrow is one of the things I like most about him. He has a focus I envy and work each day attempting to find.

Baker is truly “in the moment”. Dare we say it Kenton? Baker is “old school”!

  49. NCBucsFan Says:

Let him get signed elsewhere,, lets get a compensatory pick.

  50. cmurda Says:

Yet, for some reason I catch heck for my in game rants. Sorry, I’m Italian. F___U

  52. gp Says:

Not an attack, just a reminder

  53. jimmy Says:

Hainsey was part of the ring of honor draft class of 21, chock full o mutts.

  54. Aqualung Says:

It might be time to implement a character limit on length of post. It’s getting ridiculous.

  55. Joe Says:

It might be time to implement a character limit on length of post. It’s getting ridiculous.

Eight paragraphs is “ridiculous” for a story? Seriously?

  56. Simeon4HOF Says:

Offensive priority is Chris Godwin. Then G.
    Is what it is

  57. Aqualung Says:

Joe! Not your article!!! I’m talking about the commenters……

  58. Aqualung Says:

When the cumulative comments of a poster reaches 7x the length of the original article, it’s time to consider a limit. Actually Joe I wish your articles were longer.

  59. stpetebucsfan Says:

The scroll wheel is your friend. Just a reminder.

I arrived here ten years ago just in time for the “Fameis” draft debate.
Most guys at that time posted the one and two liners. There were a few others besides myself who wrote longer posts. Sometimes they weren’t worth it and I learned which posters to scroll by if they posted long screeds that I knew I wouldn’t appreciate.

That should be how people treat me! Scroll by. I bore many here, but all can take the split second to use the scroll wheel. After ten years most know me, many ignore me, others engage.

Over the past decade however I notice more and more longer, usually well thought out posts, some like D.R. Luv, Pickgrin and now Budda, Toopanca, GG, Kenton and many others not only have longer posts they are frequently are chock full of great info from their “research”. I learn a ton about the cap and now in the silly season I’ll learn basically everything I know about the draft from these guys! Especially since I’ve loaded ADBlocker and sites get really peoed and block me.

I’ve even gone as far as posting “Scroll Alert” at the top of my messages at times.

I get those who enjoy “brevity” and support them entirely. Sometimes they even manage to sneak in a pithy, clever remark in just two lines. I say Bravo to them. But I’d hate to see the others I’ve just mentioned feel obliged to go “short form” since I frequently learn a lot from them, rarely from the one liners. Just sayin’. As they say on the internet, YMMV.

  60. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Aqualung

Learn how to scroll! Confession is good for the soul. I’ll go first. Sometimes I’ve allowed your anti Bowles screeds to trigger me. GG has already put you on notice. I’ve simply stopped reading your football “opinions” I invite you to stop reading longer posts…IT’S EASY!!!

Don’t read my stuff. I promise to return the favor and then neither of us has to be triggered eh?

One last shot…you do know how dumb it is to complain about reading ANYTHING you do not have to read, right? I honestly do not get your point. AGAIN you do know how to scroll! Don’t read it and you won’t be offended!

  61. Brian in St Pete Says:

Make him a decent offer, don’t overpay, and if he goes he goes. I’d rather bring back Bredeson to be that interior backup if Klein wins the starting LG spot this year (as I expect).

  62. FlBoy84 Says:

Bredeson/Klein comp loser will provide a far better value at backup G/C and be solid enough if pressed into service. Far too many needs on D to use the money on that you’d pay to keep Hainsey. Hope he gets the $$ & thrives elsewhere. Good guy from all accounts, but you can’t keep everyone.

  63. Zman Says:

No legs. No push. But its nice to see him act likeca pro and say hes leaving during the season! He had his chance.

  64. SenileSenior Says:

I’ve got your back, stpetebucsfan! I get tired of some the negative nellies too. I too know how to skip over the worst ones.

    Go Bucs!!

  65. Usfbucs Says:

Moving Barton to G would be crazy talk. As a rookie broadcasters were talking about how good he was. We might have a future All Pro at center.

  66. Beeej Says:

My annoying Eagles fan buddy kept reminding me all thru 2023 that Jason Kelce SUCKED his first few years in the league

  67. Canabuc Says:

I say re-sign him let Ben bredesen go make him the incumbent left guard unless somebody else like Klein or another free agent can beat him out

  68. Aqualung Says:

Let’s have a positive only rule! That’s what we need. No diversity of opinion, or thought, and heaven forbid, some constructive criticism leveled at improvement. Naa, no more of that.

Let’s get a picture of Todd’s eleventh place trophy and celebrate.

  69. Aqualung Says:

Algo doesn’t like the letter “z” apparently, especially not spaced and in consecutive order. But anyway, yeah. A computer calculating fog index would fry a bank of microchips on some of these.

  70. MadMax Says:

Good luck Robert. You gave it your all. Go get that money while you can.

  71. Aqualung Says:

Preferably he rethinks after offers are made and Jason has a discussion with him. It would appear we have good OL coaching finally. Beat out the comp for LG and Hainsey is a Buc. The offense as a whole last season proved that good coaching and scheme matters and that’s a good thing.

  72. garro Says:

That would put the Bucs in a very dangerous place at center Joe and I am sure Jason is aware. It would be foolish to let him walk for some minor dollars. If someone offers him a boatload of guaranteed money. It happens. Some crazy contracts these days.

    Go Bucs!

  73. Tavvy Says:

    @STPPETE,
    YOU THE MAN!!
    Love the “COULDS’!!

  74. FrontFour Says:

Is Hainsey strong enough to play LG. Wasn’t strong enough to play C.

  75. SteelStudBuc Says:

I’d say, take the money Bob Hainsey! This is a once in a lifetime shot to secure your family’s future. Bucs will still love you as will the fans.

  76. TrueBuc Says:

Owners and upper management of the Bucs, let’s look at the past three seasons, studying the film. Baker was sacked more times this year, then he was the past year. Baker has to be very frustrated out there on the field, when he has been sacked play after play. Stop the hype with Barton, just because you were thrilled with your # 1 draft pick, who has not turned out to be the savior. How about you focus on making your defensive line comparable to your outstanding offensive line, and get your proper coaches in line, and stop blaming Hainsey for your failures. Hainsey should be the center, and correct your other problems, he is a very smart guy for the interior….. ! Stop blaming each other, and get to work for 2025!!!!! GO BUCS
