Myles Garrett Is Sure He’d Be “Comfortable” In A 3-4 Defense

February 6th, 2025

“Graham Barton is off limits.”

So the heavy panting for the Bucs to trade for All-World edge rusher Myles Garrett isn’t limited to the break room at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters.

Garrett (and his 13-sacks-per-year average) wants out of Cleveland by way of a trade. His contract is pricey but below market value for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

This week, Garrett is telling seemingly anyone that would listen that he just wants to go to a playoff-caliber team and push them over the hump.

Joe asks: is there any playoff team in more desperate need of an edge rusher than Tampa Bay? And how many more sacks might Garrett get playing on a team with a top-shelf offense, so he can be in more games where his team is leading everyone knows the opponent is throwing?

Garrett joined ESPN’s Mina Kimes yesterday at the Super Bowl’s Media Row and said not to pin him down as only a 4-3 defensive end.

“If I have to stand up (as a 3-4 outside linebacker), I’ll do it,” Garrett said. “It’s something I haven’t been asked to do. But it’s something I’ve done in practice, something I’ve worked on. I feel like I’m comfortable just about anywhere.”

No snide comments today about Todd Bowles asking Garrett to drop into coverage. But hey, Jason Pierre-Paul adjusted to it after being a 4-3 defensive end with the Giants.

Joe has been pondering the likely price for Garrett: two first-round draft picks. Maybe a little more.

Joe actually likes that cost but then starts thinking about the potential price to move up in Round 1 of the 2025 draft to select cornerback/receiver/Heisman Trophy-winner Travis Hunter. He’s an unreal prospect on both sides of the ball and is 8 years younger than Garrett.

What a fun thought, comparing the cost and value of Garrett to the potential of Hunter on the Bucs’ roster.

Back to reality, Garrett sure seems like he’d be happy to play in Tampa.

Maxx Crosby make smore sense. With Spytek and TB12 there we could make it happen.

  2. Pickgrin Says:

    Too expensive – not happening….

  3. Dick LeBeau Jr. Says:

The Raiders aren’t trading Crosby, so I’m not sure how it makes more sense just because of Brady and Spytek. So give away the one real star they have. lol

  4. Pmike Says:

About as much chance of Crosby leaving LV as there was Mike leaving Tampa…

  5. Roy Says:

Too bad when your OC or Asst General manager are taken away from your team that you don’t get draft pick compensation of some sort whether a pick from that team or a supplemental pick.

  6. Hawk Says:

The problem with trading away 1st/2nd rd picks, is that you trade away ‘impact’ players that have an impact span of 5-10 yrs on average. Garrett *might* play another 5 years at a high level. And you’ve missed your chance at another Wirfs, Evans, Sapp, Brooks, etc.
Giving up 4 impact picks for Gruden (2-1sts and 2-2nds) was the beginning of the end of the Bucs dynasty. That was *4* impact players missing for the next 5-10 years. That was over 1/3rd of your starting offense or defense.

  7. Statguy Says:

The position of need is at edge LB we don’t need to pay a ransom for a guy to bring in and ask them to do something they have never done before. We have three first round picks on the line we don’t need another guy to put his hand in the dirt. You need a TJ watt which isn’t available but may be able to get a Joey Bosa

  8. doolnutts Says:

Why would Raiders trade their best guy that’s not a brady move he wants to win. You don’t hire a HC in his 70s to win down the road.

  9. Tucker Says:

I know it’s probably only a fantasy but man o man would that be a beautiful trade go for it Jason he will push the defense over the hump for sure.

  10. BuckyBuc Says:

Crosby makes MORE sense than Myles. Would be less expensive and we have absolutely no ties to cleveland. There is familiarity between the front offices of both the raiders and the Bucs now.

That’s like saying there was no chance for Tampa to trade for Gronk, but guess what, Jason had ties with new england so it was easier to deal with.

  11. Half_Sac Says:

Doesn’t Garret make like 10 million less thank Joey Bosa

  12. Pryda30 Says:

I think if we throw in a player and some picks we can make this trade for Garret I would love him down here

  13. ReeeBarrr Says:

There is so much more potential value keeping the picks, signing a free agent for less.

  14. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Sorry we’ll pass, Myles Garrett…

Were more interested in the Noah Spences of the world around here and QBs having 8 seconds to throw the ball.

  15. Tbbucs3 Says:

Maybe we can take another crack at future Ring of Honor member Randy Gregory?

  16. Woodman Says:

    Tbbucs3 = Idiot

  17. Saskbucs Says:

Is there a Jared Verse sitting at #19 this year? Does Mike Green fit that role and make it to #19?

He’s about the only 1st round edge I want as at least he has production and Carter won’t be there obviously.

I don’t want to pay a steep cost of multiple 1sts but I do want to see a proven beastly edge rusher next to Vea and Kancey. Real tough call but considering our other holes I am leaning to keeping our picks and signing a cheaper FA like Mack. I know Mack is old but he still has to be respected out there and I am sure would be more impactful than Shaq.

  18. Jmarkbuc Says:

You don’t pay a kings ransom to bring in a 30 yr old and ask him to not the thing he’s best at.

    At least rational coaches wouldn’t.

  19. Henry Says:

Outside of some ridiculously reduced price, like a 3rd rounder, no thanks. Garret is a great player but I vote for never trading draft picks to build a team. Build through the draft and never forget the throwin samoan, chris chandler, Revis etc. The only one I recall working out was for Wally Chambers who although way past his prime did contribute to a playoff run I believe. How did the Chargers do with Kahill Mack?

  20. BakerFan Says:

Trey Hendrickson is for the taking, he only had 17.5 sacks per year the past 2 seasons. Guess that is not enough for Bucs management and coaches to consider. smh

  21. Derek Says:

    Not happening

  22. rrsrq Says:

Those saying too expensive, what did the Bucs pay for Gruden and Keyshawn that resulted in a SB, what did the Bucs pay for Brady that resulted in a SB, the Bucs paid for the after effects of brady and salary-cap-hell, either way we got a SB. Miles Garrett does not guarantee a SB, but name a better player you are going to draft in the low teens or high 20’s

  23. Curse of Gruden Says:

Where is the money coming from?

  24. RustyRhinos Says:

Absolutely, no with 2-1st rd draft choices talk. NO!!! Not 1 first rd draft choice. Garrett is a good DE, To me he is not worth 2-1st, & anything else, nor is he worth 1-1st & any other draft capital in my humble opinion. We have been doing very well in our Licht drafts. Why remove his draft capital, for a 29-year-old DE?

Yes, we sure do need a productive DE, and Garrett would be Awesome to see as a Buccaneer DE. Who is to say we would not have other opportunities with those lost draft picks, be it 2 or just 1 first-round draft choice? I would rather we take our chances on a 1st-3rd draft choice.

Now if Licht can get him for a 2-3rd draft choices, YES!!! I just do not see a productive plan removing high draft capital for a player. Yes even one as good as Garrett.

How would our “Team Future” look without our last 2 first-round picks? No Kancey, No Bartton…

I would be very excitedly happy if we could get Garrett, just not for 2 first-round picks.

    GO!!!!!BUCS!!!!!

  25. garbs65 Says:

Wait….is there actually a chance/scenario where the Bucs could land Travis Hunter in the draft?

  26. RustyRhinos Says:

Great idea! Let’s give Cleveland a 1st Round pick + JTS + KJ Britt.

  28. It's Corn Says:

    no Slashes, thanks

And 2 first rounders plus are a lot of eggs to put in one basket in Myles Garrett. If he gets injured for the season, which seems to happen a lot in Bucs land, then you have nada.

And because of Bowles you are putting him in a 3-4 defense, which he’s never played before.

Pass. Or get a new DC and go 4-3.

… or another Mark Barron, Adrian Clayborn, Gaines Adams, Michael Clayton, Vernon Hargreaves, OJ Howard, JTS, Devin White or Logan Hall… works both ways.

  31. Bill Says:

Garrett or Hendrickson would be my target. Chances of getting a player of this caliber are very slim. And let’s face it the GM hasn’t been very successful drafting edge players and Bowles hasn’t been great at developing them either. So go get one of these 2 guys.

Does anyone remember the moral of the story from Jack and the Beanstalk?

  33. Evo Says:

What happened to Good DC’s who actually adjust their defensive schemes to the talent they have?

  34. Bucs Guy Says:

TMM. They, Maxx or Miles. I would be happy with any 1 of the 3 that Jason Licht can get.

  35. Kieran Says:

This years #1 next years #2 round pick and Rashad White or Jamal

  36. oufan4ever Says:

Baker and Myles were not on the best of terms in Cleveland. I’d rather keep Bake happy and pass on Myles and not take a chance on any locker room backstabbing. The players all seem to get along great currently and I wouldn’t want to rock that boat. Just my opinion.

  37. New Fan Land Says:

Lots of good takes on this. The one that is trash is “let’s not invest in guaranteed winners now and risk picks we could’ve had down the road being impact players.

You have an offense that proved they can play championship level football RIGHT NOW. They had a rough game in the wild card game, but who knows how much the calm of a dependable defense would’ve changed the whole season.

They could have been 14-3 pretty easily with a defense that could make stops. They could’ve won the game against Washington if they had a defense that could make stops. They could win a super bowl NOW with a defense that can consistently make stops.

Sure, you don’t want to go broke for the future to try, but if you have an opportunity to make a change that is almost guaranteed to push you over that edge while the other side of the ball is competing at the right level, you make some sacrifices.

Or, you keep your picks and invest in prospects and ignore the great thing you have, and those prospects come up in a team that can stop the ball but can’t score on offense.

    Invest in the now.

  38. stpetebucsfan Says:

“is there any playoff team in more desperate need of an edge rusher than Tampa Bay?”

I’m obviously confused. I thought the value of the edge rusher was going to be more sacks! If sacks are the major metric for the “edge rusher” what contribution does Garrett have to make? The Bucs were SEVENTH in sacks last year!

Perhaps more desperate for an “edge rusher” would be KC? They had 39 sacks just like another playoff team the Bills! The Rams and Lions two good teams had even less although the Lions did lose a premier edge in Hutchinson, so perhaps they are not “desperate”.

  39. Jeffs grandpa Says:

    Fairy tale land

  40. garro Says:

Ah yes I remember now. Offseason equals repetition of the same old rants until it obviously will not happen and then another month of repeating why it should have happened. Then the season starts and we all realize that what actually happened was pretty spot on.

    God I love the offseason!

    Go Bucs!

  41. SlyPirate Says:

If Bowles dropped Miles into coverage

… the best pass rusher in the league
… on a team with no real pass rush threats

He should be fired on the spot.

  42. Rs Says:

Offer them 3 firsts to throw in ward please. whatever add a third to get newsom and jok. It would instantly turn the BUCS bottom half defense into the best defense and the team into perennial sb favorites.
