Mina Kimes: Bucs Offense Will Make Josh Grizzard Look Good

February 3rd, 2025

Built-in success.

Joe has written a couple of times — half-jokingly, half-serious — wondering where new Bucs offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard will be a head coach next year.

The last three Bucs offensive coordinators have experienced extremes in their careers the last three seasons. Either the offensive coordinator has had his arse canned and can’t find another job or he’s been hired as a head coach.

Nothing in-between. Feast or famine.

BSPN football analyst Mina Kimes, on her podcast last week recorded just hours before Grizzard was promoted, noted whomever got the job would look good because there are no weak spots on the offense (provided the Bucs bring back Chris Godwin).

“It’s like the perfect job for a coordinator to get a lot of credit, because it’s like a good offensive line, a quarterback that people think is good — not great, really good.

“We’ll see with Chris Godwin. That’s an interesting one, but Jalen McMillian was really awesome for them. Bucky Irving was awesome. Mike Evans is still Mike Evans, so I’m not worried about the offense.”

Nor should Bucs fans.

Joe believes now that Bucky Irving has a year of NFL under his belt, he will be better. Joe doesn’t think the same expectation is wrong for Jalen McMillan. He should be better.

Grizzard will be learning on the job, just like Dave Canales did in 2023. Canales’ two biggest problems were scoring a touchdown on the opening drive — just the opposite of Liam Coen — and Canales was way too hung up on running up the middle time and again.

And still Canales had the Bucs a play and a two-point conversation from pushing the mighty Lions to overtime in the playoffs.

Kimes isn’t wrong. The offense should still be good. The offense has the players to bail out Grizzard if he makes some errors.

The defense, specifically the pass defense, must be fixed. That’s all there is to it.

Most agree and hope the pass defense gets fixed. It seems a faint hope at this moment.

Finger 🤞 Jalen doesn’t =Michael Clayton. That dude has scarred me for life. I learned a valuable lesson about predicting the next Jerry Rice ill just leave it at that.

    AMEN!

  4. Permanently Moderated Says:

Excited about the offense. Defense not so much. LVD isn’t going to play forever and they have no one to replace him. What’s the thinking on that?

  5. heyjude Says:

Good for Mina complimenting our offense. She is right on. And by Mike’s comments with Rock Riley, in another Joe article, Grizz already has done 3rd downs, et al. Not worried at all.

I cannot wait to hear who takes over Grizz passing position and who we will have for defense.

  6. Hodad Says:

Joe, any word on if the Bucs are planning a presser to introduce Grizz? Can you also clear up Bowles current contract?
Most teams try to avoid major news during Super Bowl week to keep the game in focus. So Grizz might not be rolled out until next week. Unclear now. … Joe was told Bowles has a 5th-year option. No word on if team executed it. –Joe
I believe next season is his last year with the Bucs holding a 5th year option? It’s rare coaches go into their final year without some sort of extention leaving them as lame ducks. McCarthy coached on his final year last season without an extension, and now he’s out of a job. You would think the Bucs would’ve already picked up Bowles 5th year if they were all in on him? Please clarify if I’m right about his contract. If I am the Glazers are leaving themselves an exit ramp from Todd after next season.

    Amen to the Amen.

  8. Bucsfan Says:

Edge rush acquisition that is a proven fire breather such as Lawrence,Sweat,or Mack will go a long way toward fixing defense. No more whiffs on drafting edge-buy a proven FA that fixes the problem. Pass defense gets better immediately with a great edge rusher.

  9. heyjude Says:

Bucsfan – Fully agree. Should be on the great minds for the 19th draft pick.

  10. Ron Potter Says:

The ass defense needs upgrades. So does the HC position.

  11. Ron Potter Says:

Meant that to be *pass defense

  12. Lt. Dan Says:

    More Mina please.!

  13. RBUC Says:

The question is will the Bucs be able to pay to keep Chris Godwin and have enough left over to do what’s necessary to revamp this defense???🫣🤞🏼

  14. TheBigSombreo Says:

This Grizzard promotion seems like the Bucs are letting Baker Mayfield and Mike Evans run the offense. Their inputs should weigh in heavily.

I just hope The Gizz can call a real time offense under rapid time constraints to get plays off. And, does he know how to read and re-act to defensive schemes?

May as well build a robust audible system so Bake can run his own offense in real time.

  15. PewterStiffArm Says:

And I do apologize for the third down commitment from our defensive side of the ball. Another good year wasted not being able to get off the field to give the ball back to our offense. Draft well Jason, draft well.

  16. Geno711 Says:

Based upon age, I would not give up my 19th pick for Mack. I would trade a 2nd rounder.

  17. Geno711 Says:

Oh my bad. Mack a free agent.

  18. ModHairKen Says:

Grizzard will be better than Duuuvallll because he’s a man, not an idiot. I had no idea what a Wally Cleaver/Eddie Haskel that Coen was. Good riddance

  19. ballwasher61 Says:

Lest we forget the toll injuries took on defense, Kancey out first 5 weeks, secondary continuously hurt all year but we do need Pass rush help and inside LB help and then shore up depth. We were fortunate not to have sever o-line injuries all year except for the starting Left guard in camp. Had some during the year but mostly healthy. Wonder what the trade value for Miles Garret or Parsons would be?

  20. Darren c Says:

The biggest concern is the pass defense. Bowles needs a Dc to over see this. We need a good but declining bobby wagner. Need to address tye corners and theor ability not to get hurt. Our practoce squad played all year.

  21. Aqualung Says:

Ron Potter – you were right the first time, LOL.

  22. Kieran Says:

How about we trade our #1 pick this year and next years #1 with Rashad White to Cleveland for Myles Garrett who just requested a trade

  23. IE Buc Says:

Caley is joining the Texans as OC and Scheelhaase might become the Jaguars OC. With Grizzard being OC during the same season, we will see which teams made the right decisions.

  24. Marky mark Says:

Baker makes these OCs look good..
