Michael Vick “Extremely Proud” Of Baker Mayfield

February 11th, 2025

Joe loved how quickly Michael Vick jumped at a chance to answer a question about Baker Mayfield last week.

Joe can’t wait for the Vick movie (allegedly in development/production) to be released. Has there been another quarterback who served two years in prison and then was an All-Pro soon after — at 30 years old?

Vick knows plenty about being counted out, which seems to make him a big Mayfield fan, so he told Joe’s friend Rock Riley on The Rock Riley Show, Saturdays on WDAE radio.

Rock asked Vick about Mayfield last week during Super Bowl festivities in New Orleans.

“I might sound bias when I sit right here because I’m a big fan of quarterback play,” Vick began. “So I watch the guys around the league. I watch their process. I watch them go from rookie to 10-year player. And when I look at a guy like Baker, I’m just extremely proud of him because of the adversity. Somebody asked the question about being a champion; and when you get knocked down you get back up.

“We’ve seen Baker down plenty of times to a point we didn’t even think Baker was every going to be a starter ever again. … Two back-to-back playoff seasons, and that’s amazing. And so, [the Bucs] didn’t miss a beat when Tom [Brady] left. Mike Evans still got his 1,000 yards every year. … Good things happened. They’re building a program.”

Respect for Mayfield is growing around the NFL and, as Joe has said for over a year, Mayfield will lose his haters and be treated like a true superstar if he can have three straight strong years with the Bucs.

One more to go.

Man, I miss Rock Riley’s podcast on this site…

  2. Kieran Says:

Baker has beat all odds in his Fairytale career, no big offers after HS and a walk on in college to the Heismen Trophy nominee 2016 to winning it in 2017 then 1st overall pick in the draft to finding a great place to call home for years to come in Tampa.

Bakers fairytale story would not be complete without Baker taking our BUCS to the Super Bowl to become CHAMPs, whata a Netflix movie in the making.

    LFG Bucs!!!!!

  3. Alanbucsfan Says:

I don’t think Mayfield has “haters”.
The fearless way he plays, his talent and his leadership skills are endearing to fans.
The criticism comes when he makes mistakes in critical situations

Baker is amazing. People are waking up and recognizing that he is the real deal. Never met the man but I have little doubt that he ever lost confidence in himself. Very few men would have the confidence to follow Brady. This cat never blinked. Not once. All of us crazy Bucs fans are dang lucky tho have this guy. Getting their money’s worth every time he steps on the field. This Baker Boi thing (whatever that is) is really catching fire.

  5. ocala Says:

Bucs hit the lottery in signing Baker Mayfield

  6. Gipper Says:

For people who know Baker, he was never really down. He got a bad deal with The Cleveland Clowns after leading them to the playoffs. Not going to go through the history again. The media ought to turn the spotlight on themselves. They all just repeat what each other says until it becomes fact. Where is the media expose’ on the dysfunction in the Browns organization? How in the hell could you ever let Mayfield go? We are seeing the Browns for how truly inept they are. They are drafting 2 or 3 this year and they will absolutely blow their draft picks.

  7. Aqualung Says:

And Vick – shame he had a bad element that sucked him in. I’m proud of him. He played great for the Eagles and has turned into an excellent and considered voice on football. He always has something worthy to say and read. If he has a better coach with Atlanta, who knows where he might be.

  8. Dewey Selmon Says:

If Baker brings a SB to Tampa they will make a move about him.

  9. GoneGator Says:

I don’t care how long it’s been or how much good he’s done since…. This prick brutally abused animals and that makes him lower than snail shlt to me.

Baker doesn’t need this clown to be proud of him.

  10. Aqualung Says:

Baker deserves the praise and the credit. Looking forward to see what he and the Grizz concoct to score 35 points a game, so as to have a chance for a winning record

  11. Aqualung Says:

Algo bats them down like a Chris Simms pass.

  12. View from 132 Says:

I wonder if Vick’s chest ever healed from that shot he took from Derrick in 2002.

  13. Stupadaso Says:

no one cares what Vick has to say. First class dirtbag.
go crawl under that rock where you came from.

Baker Mayfield deserves all the credit in the world. First class guy.
He certainly doesnt need high praise from a dog killer.

  14. stpetebucsfan Says:

And what or who stopped Michael Vick in his prime? Hint it wasn’t an edge rusher, although Simeon Rice was one of the best and perhaps most underappreciated DEs of all time. Not the best but close.

But it wasn’t Simeon! It wasn’t the edge rush that neutralized Vick. It was #55 HOFer Derrick Brooks who shadowed Vick and never let him escape.

DW45 had the speed an ability to fill that role for the second SB win. Nobody has come close since. LVD is a great all around LB but he’s simply not as fast as #45. Neither was DB55 but he seemed to have a preternatural feel for the game and what Vick wanted to do.

The Bucs MISSED that influence totally. Given the nature of today’s NFL QB’s wouldnt it be nice to find another DW45 who could perhaps keep his head together for more than a few seasons?

  15. Kenton Smith Says:

GoneGator, we’ve all been raised in different environments through no fault of our own. I don’t know where Vick has walked and in what shoes he’s walked in but he’s paid the price for his actions. His last comments when talking about Baker though were right on. “Good things happened. They’re building a program”. Mayfield and the Bucs have been the perfect pairing. He’s been waiting for an opportunity like this and he knows better than taking it for granted. And JL and TB have been busy building that program with guys like Mayfield who play their butts off for the love of the game and each other. It’s a beautiful thing to watch.

  16. Jeff Says:

    Shut up dog killer.

  17. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Kenton

Agree with the old “walk a mile in my shoes”. Having less than a stellar childhood has turned out to actually be a blessing! I’ve been surrounded growing up among people with some real challenges socially.

Christians like to say the Lord works in mysterious ways and I must confess the more mystery I find in the world. But “my world” almost always follows my “attitude”. Positive and good things happen. Fearful or negative and bad stuff happens.

Hence I wear T shirts that say “Gratitude is my Attitude.”. We are ALL blessed it saddens me to realize that not all of us realize it.

  18. Bowles4President Says:

Love me some Vick. His “A Football Life” episode is a crazy story. I remember him saying that it took 6 months in prison before he realized that it was his own fault that he was in prison. That sounds like a very honest epiphany to me.
The guy who wrote Amazing Grace was a captain of slave ships before he turned his life around and became a abolitionist. History says the apostle Paul murdered people because of their beliefs, which he would later subscribe to and champion himself.
It is possible for people to change.

Nonetheless, Michael Vick may go down as the biggest “what could have been if he’d always applied himself” in NFL history.

  19. Gipper Says:

I got a new dog the other day. It is a really ugly dog. I call it Munch.

  20. Jeffs grandpa Says:

Sorry everyone my grandson is a angry little below average iq fella

  21. GoneGator Says:

With all due respect to Mr Vick. I give him the benefit of thinking his upbringing was less than ideal. I also understand he was “punished” for the animal cruelty he engaged in.

BUT… I’ve spent my life working with and living around people who have had absolutely horrible life experiences, and some of them also did horrible things. No-one wants to be known for one horrible thing, and shouldn’t be, but if that person goes on to be a talking head or public persona then it’s natural to be reminded. If

My opinion of him (and my judgement) probably has a lot to do with my attitude towards people and animals in general. I prefer animals.

My calling him whatever derogatory name I choose is no further punishment for him. I’m sure he doesn’t care 1 bit what some guy in the comments section here thinks. I don’t wish him harm or unhappiness. But he’s not a person who’s opinion on anything matters to me. He may be a great guy now, but he’s also someone who brutally and repeatedly abused, tortured, and murdered innocent animals.

  22. Kenton Smith Says:

Gipper. Once in awhile you’ll find a dog that can’t be house trained. Good Luck!

  23. heyjude Says:

So much respect out there for Baker. Good to hear. True, Baker gets knocked down and gets back up again. So lucky to have him. Love hearing from Rock Riley too.

  24. Erik with UniqueModernArt.com Says:

I guarantee that Baker would’ve made that SB a closer game than Mahomes did.

Baker is a better QB over the past 2 seasons than Mahomes.

Not team success, but individual performance over the entirety of that span; Baker is better right now.

  25. Marky mark Says:

    Cmon munch…say something negative.

  26. dbbuc711 Says:

Just as long as Vick doesn’t call Baker his dawg

  27. BucaneroJim Says:

One NFL quarterback goes to prison for abusing dogs, another gets a fat contract after abusing women. Women are worth less than dogs it appears. At least Vick owned up to his crime.

  28. Rich Says:

Just saw a comparison of Baker and Josh Allen from last season…very eye opening!!!!

  29. Kenton Smith Says:

I get it GoneGator. That’s a tough one to forgive for all us animal lovers.

  30. stpetebucsfan Says:

Yeah GG I agree with Kenton we get it. I love my animals as much as humans…well almost and with some humans…..

    @Bucanero Jim

“Women are worth less than dogs it appears.”

I think you just said the “quiet part” out loud. Wish i could disagree but sadly I can’t.

  31. Aqualung Says:

The departed reptile shows his capacity for empathy and understanding, while sharpening the brilliant analysis. The thinly veiled hypocrisy is evident.

    As is my sarcasm.

  32. Ron Mexico Says:

If Licht nails the draft again, Mayfield will be lifting the Lombardi Trophy a year from now.

  33. GoneGator Says:

    Aqualung
Why are you still trying to troll me?
    You don’t know me.
I barely post here anymore, I don’t comment on your brilliant posts anymore, I just lost a pet 6 days ago….. I have empathy for the animals as well as Vick. LMTFA

  34. BigMacAttack Says:

GoneGator’ sorry to hear about your pet. My dogs are kids. I lost one about 6 months ago and it was tough seeing her go.
There’s not a doubt in my mind that Baker won’t continue to get stronger and better every year. He’s a diamond and we’re lucky we got him to come here and stay. I love the guy and he’s a warrior. No quit in Baker and he honestly reminds me of Drew Brees. I don’t know if we can win another Championship with Todd Bowles but I 100% believe we can with Baker.
I’m also very excited to see what Jason Licht has in store for us in free agency and the draft.

  35. BigMacAttack Says:

I also may not agree with everything people say, but I damn sure believe in their right to say it, no matter who’s feelings get hurt. It’s paramount to living in a free society which hopefully we will get back to soon. And without the 2’nd Amendment we’d lose all of the rest, especially the first.

  36. garro Says:

Respect arond the NFL is growing?!?

Mine is still pegged at zero Joe and that says more about the freaking NFL than it does Vick!

    Geeez!

    Go Bucs!

  37. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

Baker, Baker the head coach maker. Lmao
