Josh Grizzard Seems To Be Channeling A Little Bit Of Al Davis

February 7th, 2025

Take what you want.

New Bucs offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard didn’t come out and say it, but it sounded just a little bit to Joe yesterday like Grizzard has a touch of Al Davis in him.

Davis, the legendary owner of the Raiders, often liked to brag how he would take the age-old football cliché “Take what the defense gives you” and turn it on its ear, saying “We’ll take what we want.”

Grizzard said he wants his offense to attack a defense in a variety of ways, not just run and not just pass. In other words, the Bucs want to take what they want… if they believe a defense is vulnerable to a specific playcall.

Still, Grizzard said, he wants to run the ball because if a team can run effectively it rips the heart out of a defense.

“At the end of the day, we want to be physical,” Grizzard said. “We want to be physical because the trenches win. When you’re able to run the ball and you’re able to press on a defense for four quarters, that’s what wins ballgames.

“We also want to be [multifaceted]. It could be a week where we need to throw the ball more or we need to run the ball more.”

Grizzard emphasized that a team cannot be pass-only or run-only. Injuries do and will happen. An offense has to be flexible in order to adjust to injured starters.

“Like last year, the guys get hurt and how do you have guys step up?” Grizzard explained. “With the scheme you saw last year, we were able to change plays at the line of scrimmage. … By doing that, we put the pressure on the defense.”

Being equal parts dangerous on the ground and in the air keeps defenses guessing, he said, especially in the red zone.

And winning in the red zone often leads to victories.

Sounds like an attacking offense that’s unpredictable with a variety of plays. Keeping the playbook and adding some Miami plays will help the offense grow…

Now let’s hope for an ATTACKING DEFENSE with some new FA energy and great draft picks.

That is good to hear Joe. It is about imposing your will!

It will require guys to be ready to step up as many did last season. Otton, Durham, Tucker, White, and the entire O line I think stepped up.

With Godwins injury there was a big oportunity for our WR group to step up. But sadly that didn’t really happen. McMillan came on late in the year though. Give more snaps to my man Miller I think he can play. Palmer and Jarrett? I am waiting…Shepard? Nah… Too many bonehead moves.

    Go Bucs!

  3. Aqualung Says:

As long as he’s channeling 1980s Al Davis, great!

  4. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

A balanced offense and a tough one.

Someone should ask him if he ever wants to be a head coach…would be nice to know if he’ll bail later.

  5. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

garro, I agree 100 percent about Shephard. Guy drove me crazy last year.

  6. BucU Says:

I expect Palmer to be cut at some point. He’s not worth a roster spot.

  7. Bill Says:

I would like us to trade Rashad White and draft Trevayon Henderson from Ohio State.

  8. Oddball Says:

“We want to be physical because the trenches win.”

    Bingo

  9. unbelievable Says:

What exactly are you trading R White for?

Maybe yall forgot, but we basically stopped using him during our last 4 games of the season, and not coincidentally- our “high powered” offense was totally stuck in the mud for 3 of those 4 games. Lost to Dallas, barely beat New Orleans, lost to Washington…

  10. Aqualung Says:

Lots more Pony would be good. White’s running last year was his best ever. Not as good as either of the other two, but solid and we all know about his pass catching game.

I think he was punished for his fumble against Dallas. We probably win that one if he doesn’t fumble.

Nick Cage needs to play Al in a biopic

For me the takeaway line is…“At the end of the day, we want to be physical,”

    YES! YES! YES!!!

And the physicality of the O will rub off on the D which already has some good ‘tude going! Calijah is almost Suh mean. Hope he can keep it in check enough to prevent yellow flags but ya gotta love a guy with a MEAN streak.

When healthy AW45 can really bring it and I get the gripes about Zyon needing to turn his head more but when he lines somebody up for a hit…BOOM!!! Just check out his highlights. So right off the bat the D starts with at least 3 guys who will light guys up! I’m probably leaving a few guys out. Vita obviously uses his size to MASH people.

A great draft with two stars at ILB and a true cover corner and the Bucs will be a team nobody wants to play! Talented AND PHYSICAL!!!

One does not have to look far to see that attacking a team say, with a poor secondary, with a pass heavy gameplan is a key to success

  14. Fred McNeil Says:

Ashley Bidens Diary: Heck yeah! Nicolas Cage would make a great All Davis.

  15. FrontFour Says:

Nick Cage as Al Davis – great casting.
