Josh Grizzard Details Ryan Fitzpatrick Guidance

February 18th, 2025

There will be a little bit of Fitzmagic in the 2025 Buccaneers offense.

No, Baker Mayfield is not growing out his beard.

Rookie Bucs offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard was 26 years old when he joined the Miami Dolphins offensive staff as a quality control assistant back in 2017. Two years later, high-mileage NFL veteran QB Ryan Fitzpatrick landed on the Dolphins roster after two seasons with the Bucs.

Grizzard told Joe that not only was Fitzpatrick a mentor to him, but Fitzpatrick’s teachings are still part of Grizzard’s approach today.

Fitzpatrick recently blessed Grizzard’s promotion on social media. During his visit with The JoeBucsFan Show on WDAE radio, Grizzard described that as “pretty cool” and explained some of Fitzpatrick’s impact on his coaching.

“He was huge for me,” Grizzard said of Fitzpatrick. “I learned so much from him. It might sound odd, the coach learning from the player [in Miami]. At that time, I’d only been in the NFL for a handful of years and he had played for so many organziations, and he just tried to tell me what he saw good and bad in coordinators and position coaches — and trying to eliminate things that are losing. He was just a wealth of knowledge and that was on the personnel side of it, and just on the field a competitor, love him to death.”

Grizzard went on to say Fitzpatrick gave him a lot of feedback about planning for different scenarios, good and bad messaging, good and bad practice schemes and more.

“[Fitzpatrick] had just seen so much that it was invaluable [guidance] and I still lean on some of those things today,” Grizzard said.

    Fitz is a real character.

  2. Aqualung Says:

That was a hilarious bit when he wore DJax’s swag for the presser. Sadly against the Steelers the following week he threw picks on 3 consecutive passes, then almost led the furious comeback. DJax punt return for a TD negated by some awful penalty. Then the D got the ball back for the O (shocker), and we saw the worst 4-and-out ever. And that ended the season.

I like what Grizzard has been saying so far. Know it all coaches with a my way or the highway philosophy don’t last long anymore. Collaboration with your players is key, learning from your players is key. It gets everyone on the same page and pulling in the same direction faster.

I think the offense will be just fine. Young coaches with little ego are much more likely to succeed imo.

Wait, what? I live in the Panhandle now so I’m out of range for WDAE and I don’t use iHeart. You have a weekly show or something?

It’s good to hear about coaches that learn and are willing to make changes. Carbs and Pic learned last year that the zone runs weren’t great and switched the run game scheme emphasis. I hope other Bucs coaches are willing to change too.

Liking the sound of Grizzard more and more

  8. DungyDance Says:

Love the pic of Fitz! Also, really enjoyed the radio show last Saturday. Props for booking some first rate guests. And while I was expecting another quarter to get put into the “edge rusher” jar during the broadcast, the way things are going we may need to switch to silver dollars.

No doubt Fitzpatrick has the tools to be an outstanding coach. Intelligence and experience. Fortunately for him he has a much better gig happening already. Why give that up and fall back in to the grind. Say what you want about coaches but that cannot be an easy gig. One of those things where you either have the passion for it or you don’t. Not to mention nearly every fan in the country knows better than you do.

Maybe the Bucs could hire Fitzmagic to be a consultant. He could help Grizzard gameplan and be an extra set of eyes in the booth on Sundays.

At first glance before opening this article, I thought that was a photo of Conor McGregor. LOL
Granted, I have progressives in my eyeglass lenses.

  12. heyjude Says:

Fitz is a true journeyman that brings so much insight to the game. Grizz is very impressive. Glad they moved him up.

  13. Doughboy Says:

Fitz was only buc qb that dominated the Drew Breeze Saints.Long bombed them to death. Even Brady had a hard time with them.

  14. ModHairKen Says:

Fitzpatrick in DeSean Jackson’s clothes after that one game was one of the funniest and cool moments in Bucs’ history.

  15. Crickett Baker Says:

I loved the guy but he was SOOO inconsistent

  16. heyjude Says:

ModHairKen – So true! Never will forget that moment either. FitzMagic!

  17. BigMacAttack Says:

It was great having Fitzmagic was so much fun to watch here in Tampa. Nothing a remember better than him putting up almost 50 points on the trashy, garbage, cheating, dirty playing, scummy Saints. Loved Fitz and glad we got to watch him here.

  18. garro Says:

    Enough with this asshat.

He get nada from this fan and I used to like the guy.

You do not dis your teammates on a public forum. Especially those who can outplay you in their sleep.

    Go Bucs!
