Jason Licht On Offensive Coordinators Revolving Door
February 26th, 2025
Bucs GM Jason Licht
Former Bucs quarterback Chris Simms didn’t beat around the bush.
Yesterday, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht went through the media car wash at the combine held at the Indiana Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis. First, he spent roughly 20 minutes with the NFL media at large. Then, he spent another 20 minutes or so with the Tampa Bay pen and mic club.
Then, it was off to do PFT Live, co-hosted by the creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk, the great Mike Florio, along with Simms. Pleasantries were barely finished when Simms came right out and said it.
“Why do you keep losing OCs?” Simms blurted.
That’s sort of a trick question.
What’s Licht to say, he doesn’t want any of his coaches to reach for their dreams when given an opportunity?
So Licht tried to put a spin on the subject, trying to put a smile on an otherwise depressing topic.
“I guess it’s a good thing,” Licht said. “I think [Nick] Saban went through a lot of offensive coordinators at Alabama.
“It’s a good thing. John Harbaugh and Baltimore [have gone through offensive coordinators]. So it’s, it’s crazy though.”
Lost in the chatter about coordinators getting head coaching jobs after one year with the Bucs is head coach Todd Bowles’ angle. As Licht correctly pointed out, Bowles has displayed a knack for choosing quality coordinators.
“It’s a testament to our head coach doing a great job hiring the right people,” Licht said. “Then we have a good offense, some good pieces there.”
So the question is, can Bowles go three-for-three with offensive coordinators now that he has promoted Josh Grizzard? (Bowles inherited Byron Leftwich and didn’t waste any time after the season giving him his justly deserved walking papers)
If the Bucs offense is again top-10 this fall, Joe thinks that would be a heck of an accomplishment. If that happens, Joe would like to know where is Grizzard coaching next year.
Todd Bowles Is Today’s Guest; Combine Body Language And Comments, And Much More

Coen was amazing! But what a turd move he pulled at the end.

Florio used to have a great website, even had a funny “days without an arrest meter.” Of course, the white guilt elite and bedwetting libs somehow found that to be rayceeeest, and now he uses the site to virtue signal and grandstand while turning off the comments at the same like a coward. Bought and paid for, insufferable, effeminate 5 foot 5 little man

Couldn’t have said it better Gofor

Wow, look at the hate for PFT! You guys are something else. You know what? I 100% agree. Insufferable!

Sounds like bowles needs to hire a new defensive coordinator and stop turning defensive ends and even tackles into horrible cornerbacks. The completion percentage on the drop coverage screams insanity. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Kirk Cousins threw for over 500 yards against Todd Bowles defense. I dont care who is playing that’s unacceptable. Imagine if we had a good to very good defense. We would have won, what , 3 to 5 more games. Todd needs to rhink outside the box or bubble and change with the times ⏲️ 🤔 please 🙏

Grizzard gets two years no matter how good we are on offense. I’m betting people will want to see an encore before getting him his own show.

Having a good offense won’t make everybody a coaching candidate. With a nervous as Grizzard was at the podium for his press conferences I would say he’s no head coach in the near future. Being a good coordinator doesn’t make head coach easy just ask Todd Bowles. 😂

Maybe no one can get along with Todd a lot of turnover period.

True, Todd knows how to pick coaches. It does look good for the team when they move up the ranks dependent how they do with their new team. The jury is still out on Coen. He may flop as the HC for the Jags.
In perspective, only one team wanted an interview with Coen. Toward the end, his calls were not for winning. Those cute plays hurt us. And then he left in a dirty way. Thinking that the Bucs didn’t realize he was a snake in the grass until that point.
Grizz seems to be the guy whom worked hard in the trenches and didn’t get the glory. If he stays two years, that will be at the end of Bowles contract. Go Bucs!

Spot on! LOL

Common denominator? Mayfield & Evans! Now even better with Bucky, McMillin, Otten, (Hopefully Godwin) & even White/Tucker. Hard to stop this train with our rebuilt O line.

Those guys have a bit a BSPN going on

Bowles should not be the head coach in my opinion, but the organization believes he can win a Super Bowl. I hope I am wrong, but I do not think he is a good NFL head coach, and I do not think he will get the Bucs to another Super Bowl even if the Bucs have the number one offense in the NFL.

I don’t believe any of them will be successful as head coaches, so will be fired after 2-3 year stints.
They’ll both be available again after the next couple years.
And Coen did what was best for him. He did nothing wrong at all.

Grizzard still seems a little green, so we might be able to keep him 2 years as our offensive coordinator before he becomes a HC. And who knows, if he’s excelling as OC, maybe that fits with Todd’s retirement timetable and Grizzard is the next HC… Maybe. Jumping ahead quite a bit, since we haven’t even seen him coach as an OC yet.

Don’t know about Coen yet but I believe Canales and his Panthers are headed for a trainwreck this year. Their quarterback is mediocre at best and resigning Dalton as his backup just reinforces mediocrity

Our players made these coaches look good. Nothing will change this year. All starts with Baker.
February 26th, 2025 at 1:35 pm
Bowels finds ’em, Baker proves ’em and another team hires ’em.
Baker Baker the head coach maker. What a revelation… 😂

It’s odd how we are blessed with this defensive jenius as coach, and yet no one is raiding our defensive staff for anyone. Ya, we lost a dude to the Lions but that seemed our choice more than theres’ and it was a lateral.
It really is surprising with as well as the defense has played, players have developed and been coached up by Todd and his staff, that nobody has come to take from our coaching riches

Hey Joe(s) and Ira,
Can you dig into this article and discuss this in the next Ira podcast?
This is an NFL Players Association ranking of owners and rates Tampa as 27th.
Thanks.
