Jalen McMillan Sure Seems Happy About The Josh Grizzard Promotion

February 1st, 2025

Jumping for joy with news.

So the Bucs have a new offensive coordinator, you may have heard.

To fill the void left by the departure of Liam Coen, who scurried off to Jacksonville, the Bucs promoted passing game coordinator Josh Grizzard to replace him.

At least two Bucs rookies seem pretty happy with the move.

Receiver Jalen McMillan took to his Instagram Stories account and had a screenshot of the Bucs’ Instagram post announcing the promotion of Gizzard yesterday. McMillan responded with an “AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH” with the popular Tom Brady cry written in an acronym, “LFG.”

So McMillen is happy.

Also in the Bucs’ Instagram post, tight end Devin Culp liked it. So that makes two Bucs rookies who are on board with this move.

Tristan Wirfs also liked the Instagram post. But that’s it. Joe didn’t spend an hour looking up all Bucs players’ social media accounts. And they are spread out all across the Western Hemisphere right now so Joe is confident many are too busy living on a Friday evening and not glued to their phones.

But it is cool that two rookie skill position players on offense were stoked enough with the Grizzard news to celebrate on Instagram.

Great. Maybe we will have some continuity in our offense.

  2. OR Buc Says:

As someone who doesn’t do social media, I couldn’t care less about “likes”. But look at me here posting😝

  3. Tony Says:

Hopefully he can be just as good because we don’t need Borat trying to steal somebody else from us & bringing them to Jacksonville like he did with Coen.

  4. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Cool.

When do we hire a new DC?

  5. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Culp will be a breakout player next season.

  6. Aqualung Says:

Hiring a young aggressive DC is the next critical step to get out of the mediocrity mire.

  7. CleanHouse Says:

Sounds promising, hope he learns to call plays

  8. MadMax Says:

Just like all other recipes, go with what works, change a little here and there sometimes. if it makes it better, good. If it makes it worse, dont do that again. We got this

  9. Aqualung Says:

Hopefully Griz can teach JMac how to time his jet sweep, know what play is called and when he’s supposed to take the handoff.

  10. heyjude Says:

We may find that Grizzard was actually the key feature in our offense, especially the rookies this season. Coen got the glory on the backs of all of them. Grizzard stayed humbled and worked hard behind the scenes.

Coen’s last plays were cutesy and troubling. He did us dirty in the way he took the HC job. And worrisome toward the end he didn’t have the mindset for us to win. He was already onto interviewing for one team only. No other teams wanted to interview him. Looking back, he did us a big favor and now the Jags can deal with the snake.

    Go Bucs!

  11. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

I don’t blame Coen for taking the job in Jacksonville. It was his dream to become a HC. And I doubt many Bucs fans would have declined an opportunity to switch jobs if they could make an extra $7,000,000 or more per year than they are now.

But he gave his word to the Bucs management, owners, and players that he accepted their offer to stay, then went back on his word. The lack of integrity he displayed isn’t a good look. It could come back to bite him when applying for future jobs after he gets fired by the Jaguars. The Bucs front office and owners aren’t the only only ones in the NFL who value integrity when hiring new coaches.

  12. Debbie⁴ Says:

I understand the desire for big bucs or the top position, but I admire loyalty. I am content that we have promoted from within once again. Congrats to Grizzard. This is a man who feels the Bucs should be in the Superbowl. Keep it in the family. It will be us next year. Go Bucs.

  13. cwabucss Says:

Glad we got grizzard as our oc but was kinda hoping for carberry but I guess oline coaches just like the oline don’t get the credit they deserve. Hope this oline keeps continuing to grow let’s go Tistian, Geodoke, Mauch, and Bartom. Hopefully we retain Bredeson. Or maybe get someone better than Brederson.

“As someone who doesn’t do social media,” Don’t worry. We have plenty of anti-social people here as well. Seriously I don’t do FB, Twitter or X, I used to blog on one other site but it was political and so I gave that up after the election and my sanity is slowing returning. My wife might say too slowly.

Jude “Coen got the glory on the backs of all of them. Grizzard stayed humbled and worked hard behind the scenes.”

Agree with that sentiment although perhaps not with as much vitriol behind it.
Your fundamental point is spot on! Players play and coaches coach. Not to demean “coaching” but let’s face it, if Todd Bowles had to start you and me at Cornerback this season there’s not a coach around who could help him because let’s face it, we would suuck. LMAO

I get everybody’s disappointment about “his word”. But he did obviously get his dream job, secured his family’s financial future for generations.

He changed his mind. We all change our minds. Then there is the problem with “his word”. Coulda, Shoulda, handled it better but no harm no foul. I do think he’s a moron for trying to take Buc coaches with him. THAT bothers me!

But as to his word, again I’m a divorcee and I along with my former partner violated perhaps the most important words a person can give. I try to never hurl stones from my glass house. I’m not religious but the training never leaves I guess…you know “let he who is without sin cast the first stone”. I just can’t get on board with all “snake” stuff. LOL

  15. Marky mark Says:

The first thing Gizzard has to do us hire a financial advisor to plan a head for the 20 million a Year aphe will get as head coach of the Browns or the worst team in the NFL. Baker is 2-2 in making his OCs rich.

  16. RagingBrisket Says:

Has no playcalling experience. Temper your enthusiasm. This could go sideways in a hurry.
Wish him the best and he is set up for success should he have the talent to be a good playcaller.
    Go Bucs

  17. It's Corn Says:

Just score 40 points and we’ll win!

  18. Win in the Trenches Says:

His verbal word is non binding in legal contracts …. thats why his signature on the contract is so important….

The bucs allowed themselves to be played and used for leverage…

NFL stands for not for long….

  19. Win in the Trenches Says:

He did the exact same thing when he left Kentucky to come to Tampa….

  20. Jeff Says:

They all got the manager they wanted, but is this the manager they needed? Let’s hope this dude paid close attention to the Great Liam
    Coen.

  21. Trey Alderson-Cloutier Says:

The bottom line is, the guys never called plays before. This is the NFL, he’s being thrown into a ridiculously complex job. Very low chance he has success year one but maybe I’m proven wrong.

  22. Shane247 Says:

@Stpetebucsfan – I agree and to what end does it serve. Coen did what was best for him & his family. Move on! The name calling and the hatred are unnecessary!

  23. Lt. Dan Says:

“…Liam Coen who scurried off to Jacksonville.” Slithered would have been a better description.

  24. Todd Says:

I wonder where Josh Grizzard will be head coaching next year?

WHY isn’t ANY Bucs press advocating for “The Todd Bowles Rule” where an offensive or defensive coordinator cannot interview for a head coaching position elsewhere until two years are served. This recent nonsense is so disruptive for coaches, players and fans. The contracts would be guaranteed.

    It’s NOT … THAT … HARD!

But, until smart dudes like the J’s start becoming a pebble in ownership’s shoe and socializing the idea, well, I submit we’ll be replacing our young OC next year too b/c if there’s ANY year we’re staged for a viable Super Bowl run, it’s this one.

I keep suggesting this to all Bucs talking heads … no one has even acknowledged that it just “might” be worthy of considering and writing about.

We could even call it “The McCoen Rule”.

    Something.

I’m just done with this OC carousel.

  25. Todd Says:

Joe, why do any of my comments suggesting offensive and defensive coordinators should have to serve two years before interviewing for a head coaching position elsewhere always get deleted or ghosted? What’s wrong with this suggestion? I don’t get it.

  26. heyjude Says:

Definitely understand your points, stpetebucsfan. For sure, none of us are perfect.

Guess I am still in the belief that when someone gives their word, they mean it. Yes, Coen got his dream job but how much did he lose in the eyes of other GMs, owners, coaches, players, … He could have just been honest.

  27. snookman9 Says:

man is 12 years younder than me and looks like he is 12 years older than me. Thats awesome!

  28. BootyLover Says:

    @ Todd

That kinda rule makes some senses for O and D Coordinators, but not so much for assistants coaches. Problem is, are the coordinators immune from being fired after a poor single season? Doesn’t seem plausible.

  29. ModHairKen Says:

They asked Grizzard to yell “Hillsborough,” and instead he opened a can of Budweiser and told the reporter to fix him a sandwich.

  30. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Jude

“He could have just been honest.”

I accept your point and just because I’ve failed doesn’t make it ok.

Not sure how honest he could have been though and still retained his “options”.
Certainly looking out for #1! But it’s America…that’s the American way!!!

We’re number one…we’re number one…I’m the best, look at me yadda yadda.

    Win in the Trenches Says:
His verbal word is non binding in legal contracts …. thats why his signature on the contract is so important….
    ———————————————————————————-

According to NFL rules, his signature on a contract wouldn’t have prevented him from changing his mind and taking the Jacksonville HC job.

  32. SenileSenior Says:

There are legalities and then there are NFL rules. Then again there are ethics and values. All leave room for discussion. Funny how they come into play on a sports blog.

Regarding the promotion of Grizzard we need to have faith in the judgement of TB and JL. I do like the idea of promoting from within.

  33. Badbucs Says:

At least you put socialist in your post there @ Todd. You know like Soviet socialist republic. Last I looked this was still America. The teams can fire them in an instant on a whim but you want the coach locked in for 2 years. What would the reverse look like? The team has to keep the crappy coach for the second year no matter what because he has a contract? It has to work both ways brother. Or do you think you can make your wife stay when she asks for the divorce. Lol.

  34. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

    Badbucs Says:

    ———————————————————————————–

For any decent coach their contracts are fully guaranteed. Yes, they can be fired, but they’re going to continue to get paid. So the teams are locked in as well.

  35. Mveal2006 Says:

They’re paid to promote the team.so it’s not a big deal.

I’m hopeful. Potentially it’s a very good hire. Still, time will tell. They don’t all work out and we may be due for trouble.thats why we worship the winners. It’s as hard as batting 300 incase all, you gotta be soecial.in today’s world.

Lots of people can mimic someone else fir a lower price. Creators cost more if you can find one.

  36. David Says:

Love it. Rookie receiver, rookie, tight end, and Mike Evans all approving. That is expected, but they seemed to go a little beyond that and actually show excitement. That is promising.
