Is Luke Goedeke Negotiating A Long-Term Deal?

February 20th, 2025

Joe’s always looking for clues on the inner happenings of the Buccaneers, and this feels like a significant one.

So Bucs center Graham Barton was a guest on SiriusXM NFL Radio this week and was asked about his offensive line mates and if they could handle running the Eagles famed “tush push” in short yardage.

Barton said he thinks he could handle the big role of the center in that play, and then he started talking about his teammates.

When he mentioned right tackle Luke Goedeke, Barton said, “Luke Goedeke, probably getting ready to sign a big deal, one of the better right tackles in the NFL.”

That struck Joe because Goedeke is entering the final season of his contract and his play has put him on track for a massive new deal after the 2025 season. But Barton made it sound like Goedeke already is talking to the Bucs about an extension, which is allowed under NFL rules after players have three year of tenure.

Joe would not wager on that being a random comment from Barton. He’s very savvy and guarded with his words and in the same interview he passed on answering questions that “are above my pay grade.”

Goedeke is due to count about $3.6 million against the 2025 salary cap. If the Bucs are fishing for more 2025 cap room, they could shave $2 million off via a new Goedeke contract.

    Whatever needs to be done.

  2. PSL Bob Says:

Seems like there is some maneuvering going on, on multiple fronts. Maybe Licht is clearing up some CAP space for a big FA gambit.

  3. NutterBuccer Says:

Luke a top 5 right tackle. Pay the man. Now. Hope Barton gets in the gym with him and wirfs.

  4. FilthyAnimal Says:

This would not be a huge surprise and it’s been discussed here before as something that could happen. Locking up the best tackle tandem in the league for several years is not a bad idea.

  5. Truth be Told Says:

Let the whatever it takes to have a Pass Defense that is not painful to watch roster moves begin. Our Offense is set for years. It’s that horrible 3rd down and can’t seem to make a play Defense that is holding us back. Sign a proven Pass Rusher or 2. Go Bucs!!

  6. Aqualung Says:

Do it. I love being wrong about him as most were, after his rookie year. But the dude showed his toughness, in part by not being afraid to wear the gazoo helmet when everyone will tease him about it. He wore it and made great plays. Do it. Sign him, Godwin, extend Mike and Baker. Find a way to keep Hainsey and Bredeson. Go for the 40 burger every week. Screw the defense, it’s a lost cause anyway until certain changes are made.

  7. Fred McNeil Says:

You won’t hear any complaints from me.

  8. Fred McNeil Says:

One thing, though…all this contract math magic tends to elude me. Somehow, I doubt I’m alone.

  9. Mort Says:

Good. He’s earned it. If he keeps improving then it’ll just get way more expensive. Lock him down for the next five years and keep on going. This line is a strength of the team and you should absolutely lock it down.

  10. Vanessa Anne Says:

    Luke is a keeper.

Smart move by the front office, if in fact, they’re already talking to him about another contract.

  11. Fred McNeil Says:

It sounds like they are in discussions from what I just read. Obviously Godwin is on the front burner.

  12. Badbucs Says:

Concussion anyone? He could retire tomorrow. Watch your butt on any long term deal. Love the guy but we can’t afford another Jensen

  13. Beeej Says:

He will only become more expensive as time goes on. Eventually we will have TWO pro-bowl (MEBbe all-pro) tackles

This is a risk with every player, but we have the best contract guy in the business and I have no doubt they’ll be covering their a55 as well as they can. I would not be surprised if they had a full neurological profile on him to check his marbles for any added risk.

  15. Durango 95 Says:

Agreed on the Luke concussion thing. While all players are at risk Luke does have a history as everyone here knows. They could wait to see through another season to see if this may become something of greater concern. His on field play makes this a smart gambit other concerns could be cause for a pause.

  16. Cardiac kidz Says:

He plays with attitude and is very mobile. He struggled at the guard position but holds the leagues best edge rushers in check. He’s not a talent you want walking out the door. It’s a bit scary the amount of time he missed for the concussion and I greatly appreciate the padded Headwear he’s wearing.
We FINALLY have the foundation of a solid o-line and he’s worked his ars off to become one of the pillars. For everyone involved; him, Baker, Bucky, and us fans, I hope it works out.
We are poised to be even better in 2025!

  17. FortMyersDave Says:

When Goedeke is on the field he is a solid asset. However, the concussion is an issue, he was out for a long time. If that happens again, it could be the end of his career as he might retire which would be the wise call. Guys like Tua are really pressing their luck, I mean who wants to end up being like Jim McMahon or Scoot Brantley? Too many knocks to the dome can effectively turn a retired football player into an invalid by the time they are 55 or 60, maybe even earlier…..

So, yes the Bucs should reward the man with an extention but it is a calculated risk which could be addressed in the fine print of the contract.

  18. catcard202 Says:

As we know, quality RT contracts aren’t getting any cheaper. Licht knows he has several core players worth keeping that are coming up on new deal periods. It only gets more expensive the longer the team waits. If the FO can get a discount now & not reset the RT market in the process…It makes sense to explore those possibilities.

The other side of the coin says don’t trust that Goedeke’s concussion issue will not reoccur in 2025 & beyond…So, go find his replacement in this draft & you have a year to get that RT ready for 2026.

  19. Aqualung Says:

If Jason nails this draft, the rebuild will be complete.

Something Mark Duminink attempted and failed violently at, twice. His 28-52 record and string of bad contracts, strategically incompetent free agent signings and trades spoke volumes. And yet he still had a few fans who waxed “eloquently” (means long-windedly) about how the casual fan was to “simple” (means stoopidge ) minded to understand his genius.

Kind of like the current, except with the half and half DC-HC thing we has going on.

  20. Aaron Says:

Slow news day. And you had to write something 🤷‍♂️.

  21. westernbuc Says:

Pay guys one year early if you’re already convinced that they’re the right fit. You save money long term and incentivizes for yearly raises by reworking deals. Wouldn’t be surprised if Baker gets another year added to his contract this offseason with more guarantees.

  22. garro Says:

Would not surprise this fan at all if they got the Glass Eater a deal early.

This dude has earned it! Especially when I think of all the verbal abuse he took when he first got here. Some of it was justified but he has persevered and that shows his mental toughness. We all know he is a physically tough dude.

    Go Bucs!

  23. ThatAintRight! Says:

They have no reason to extend him right now tbh they can do it at any time. Regardless of how much money he gets makes no difference. You don’t nickel and dime guys to get an extra average so-so talent later on lmfao. That’s not how it works. You can sign someone then restructure his contract payout but most likely and typically they would have no reason to right now. Maybe come midseason in 10 month’s . Lol

  24. teacherman Says:

    2 expensive tackles?

Then we need to draft a LG in the 2nd round.

We need a cheap but elite LG.

We can’t afford a FA at LG. But we can afford an elite LG in the 2nd round.

  25. SteveK Says:

Kind of hoping a top tier OL falls to our 1st pick in the draft and we continue to fortify Baker/Bucky. Why not get a behemoth n the line of scrimmage to Kip teams. We are a playoff team and I’d love to see us be the most physical line in football. Pound the rock!

  26. BucsBucsBucs!! Says:

Love our O – Line. Sign Hainsey and Bredeson too. Maybe an additional swing tackle backup?

  27. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Didn’t the Bucs just lose a guard that retired way too early because of a cracked coconut ? I’d pay godeke but also have a get out of jail clause structured so the Bucs don’t get stuck holding the bag. Just sayin.
