Gerald McCoy Begs Jason Licht To Go Get Myles Garrett

February 4th, 2025

Pleads with Bucs GM.

The Bucs’ edge rushing isn’t ranked, it is just rank.

The Bucs the past two years have had the fourth-worst pass defense in the league in terms of average yards allowed per game. The Bucs also have no edge rush to speak of.

Coincidence? Joe doesn’t believe in coincidences when it comes to football.

Everyone can see this. You can. Joe can. Even ex-Bucs stars can. And it seems one, former Bucs Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, is either fed up or tired of biting his lip.

Yesterday, GMC was on Jim Rome’s show. Rome asked him a question about superstar edge rusher Myles Garrett, who yesterday demanded a trade from the team that drafted him, the Browns.

First, GMC told Rome had had to get something off his chest. He immediately fired off a message to Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht: Go get Garrett!

“First thing first,” GMC said as he began to answer Rome’s question about Garrett. “Jason Licht, go do everything in your power to get this guy to Tampa.”

And GMC then added that he doesn’t want to hear the Bucs say they cannot afford to trade a first round draft pick. GMC said that logic doesn’t hold up if you plan to play in a Super Bowl.

“You know what, first round picks are 50/50 anyway,” GMC said. “Myles Garrett is 100 percent.”

And Garrett isn’t just 100 percent, he’s 500 percent. The guy isn’t just good, he’s dominant. Maybe a Hall of Famer.

Joe maintains to this day the greatest heist Licht ever pulled off was trading a third-round pick to New York for Jason Pierre-Paul. Garrett is way better than JPP, and JPP was damn good.

You want to endear yourself to Bucs fans? You want to make (most) fans quit whining about Todd Bowles? You want Bucs fans fully energized and buying out available season tickets? Go get Garrett.

Even though Joe is convinced Todd Bowles messes with edge rusher’s heads because he seems to believe an edge rusher covering Drake London is more important than sacks, look at what Bowles’ defense did when he had reliable edge rushers.

Imagine how much better Garrett could make Vita Vea and Calijah Kancey, already dynamite studs.

Think of how much better YaYa Diaby would be.

And Joe is confident just having Garrett to lean on for advice and counsel would make YaYa that much better. Look at what Ndamukong Suh did for Will Gholston.

Joe really doesn’t believe the Bucs will do any more than sniff around Cleveland. Once the Bucs smell the price tag, they’ll run away. But man, what a coup that would be if Licht found a way to get Garrett to Tampa Bay.

GMC makes a helluva point. First round draft picks are a flip of the coin. Garrett is Simeon Rice. An absolute home run.

Yes, to McCoy you listen to.

  2. BuckyBuc Says:

    YES

  3. ATrain Says:

    Mcsoftie has spoken!!!!

Why do we keep hearing about what this average player thinks

  4. Bubby Says:

Please go get him!!! We won’t though.

  5. ATLBucSolar Says:

There’s not one player on the team who would not renegotiate their contract to help get Garrett. Joes! Lets start a petition to see if we can send 100,000 signatures to 1 Buc Place!

  6. Beeej Says:

Two #1’s is what I keep reading

  7. Mac Says:

I agree Joe. Licht will hear the price and run away. Go get him. Give up your first and maybe a 4th next year and get this guy. Do whatever you need to. Garrett Kancy Vea and Yaya for at least the next 2 years would be sick!

  8. Todd Says:

I don’t know. Two first round picks late in the draft is pretty expensive. I mean, imagine if we would have to have had to trade the potential wrecking crew of JTS and Logan Hall for Mike Garrett. I mean, “Bruh?!”

    Go get Miles, Jason.

What do you have to lose, except perpetual mediocrity.

  9. Rick Says:

Imagine as a Bucs fan after we trade the farm for this guy Bowles goes and drops him into coverage to chase a tight end down the field.

  10. Pahpahmike Says:

Hoping the Bucs don’t go after Garett because of the asking price. He’s a needed piece for the Bucs but, I ve seen what giving up that much in draft capital can do to the team I saw it with Gruden and Brady It kind of set the franchise back each time. However, we did win a superbowl with each but, I know Licht, Bowles and the Glazers will make the right choice

  11. Pickgrin Says:

Joe’s new pipe dream…. He’s not alone apparently.

Remember Joe’s obsession last year with bringing in Hassan Reddick? Dude had ONE sack in 10 games playing for the Jets….

Hi Gerald! How are your comic book store and Ice Cream truck businesses doing?

  12. StormyInFL Says:

” I ve seen what giving up that much in draft capital can do to the team I saw it with Gruden and Brady It kind of set the franchise back each time. ”

The Gruden trade got them a Superbowl. You make that trade 10x out of 10.

They didn’t give up anything for Brady. He was a free agent.

  13. Colonel Angus Says:

Bowles drops our “pass rushers” into coverage because they suck at the pass rush part. Get a legit pass rush from the D line and everything else will work itself out.

  14. jarrett Says:

    please listen to GMC.

    Please listen to the Fans.

we should have went after saquon last year but we decided to pay winfield smh

  15. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

He’ll want about 40 million/year for at least four years, and Cleveland will want a couple of first-round draft picks.

If Licht believes that gives us a strong chance for another boat parade then maybe it’s worth it.

It would mean saying goodbye to Godwin though. If I was the GM that would be a difficult choice to make. Had Godwin not been injured we might be playing next Sunday in the Super Bowl.

We need to improve our pass rush but paying 40 million/year & two first-round picks is risky. If we do that deal and Garrett gets seriously injured we’ll be F’ed

  16. John Bucs fan Says:

    Get him now

  17. Colonel Angus Says:

I love Godwin, but if it’s him or Garrett, I’d take Garrett. We ain’t winning anything without a dominant pass rush.

  18. Allbuccedup Says:

Browns want four draft picks for him including a first and second. Plus you probably couldn’t sign Godwin but you could include Dean in a trade and only give three picks. I would be surprised if Licht even calls them.

  19. adam from ny Says:

i think we’re better off dealing with spytek in vegas, for crosby…

i think we can werk with him…and maybe he owes licht a favor over the years – if you know what i mean…

with garrett we are in a straight up bidding war vs almost 31 other teams…not so sure we can match or outbid some of these other teams…

try to go after something you can attain…

    gerald can have garrett…

now if cleveland wants to let us fleece them for garrett, let’s roll

  20. PSL Bob Says:

The only way this would unfold is if Godwin is part of the trade. What a blow to Godwin that would be. He doesn’t deserve it, but then again football is a business not a loyalty cult.

  21. Alexandre Nascimento Says:

    Go get him, Jason!

  22. OHBucFan Says:

I agree Joe that this probably won’t happen but man, would it be fun.

  23. DungyDance Says:

No way. GMC is correct about 50/50 on first round picks. But Garrett only has 2 years left on his contract. Trade something else. First round pick for 2 years is not worth it.

  24. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

    ———————————————————————————

I believe Godwin is a free agent, so we couldn’t include him as part of a trade even if we wanted that.

  25. geno711 Says:

I’ve seen two places where they say the Bucs might go after Mike Green of Marshall with their 1st round pick.

  26. zzbucs Says:

It depends on how much will cost you….not that difficult.

    I wouldn’t trade him for 2 #1 picks…..

  27. Baking with Grizz Says:

With Garrett 8 games into the season your Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be the favorites to win it all.

    LFG GARRETT!!!!

  28. heyjude Says:

geno711 – Love to see it. I think Green will go before our pick, but you never know. Jets have a new coach and have the 7th pick. They could get him. Or even the Falcons. Unless Licht does some dealings for a higher pick.

  29. UGotRobbed Says:

They would have arguably the best D line in football, if they make it happen! Go all in!! Give Bucs!

  30. Marky mark Says:

Watson destroyed the Browns and the good players want out.

  31. Pmike Says:

Would love for the Bucs to pick up a pass rusher but Myles just doesn’t seem to fit with our team. He works best on a 4-3 kind of defense, not sure how he aligns with Bowles D.

Also, Baker and Myles did not get along at all in Cleveland. Doubt there is still bad blood but no point in messing up the locker room. Square peg in a round hole…

  32. Lord Cornelius Says:

Would be awesome but not sure it happens. I’d be good with a #1 + a #2 but anything more not so much, because we’re also going to wreck our cap with him.

  33. Pahpahmike Says:

Let me clarify about giving up draft capital. I was basically speaking of bringing in high price players/ coaches that cost the Bucs draft capital and the ability to sign free agents. I am well aware that Brady was a free agent but the Bucs are still hurting somewhat with dead monies. I did mention the Bucs won a superbowl with both.

  34. Jason Says:

Even though Joe is convinced Todd Bowles messes with edge rusher’s heads because he seems to believe an edge rusher covering Drake London is more important than sacks, look at what Bowles’ defense did when he had reliable edge rushers.

Look at what Bowles’ defense did when he let his edge rushers rush. Just saying.

  35. Nicholas Carlson Says:

    We are all begging.

  36. JimBobBuc Says:

The Bucs need too many pieces on defense, too far from a Super Bowl, so Garrett won’t want to come here. Commanders, Rams, Eagles?

  37. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist Says:

We lost against Washington because they completed their biggest 1st down on their last drive by throwing to their receiver who was covered by our supposed edge rusher.

At least Miles Garret runs a faster 40 time, so maybe he’ll be able to cover pass routes a little better….

    One can hope! Lol, SMH.

  38. westernpennafan Says:

Forget about this guy. He is over hyped over rated and overpaid and the fact that he he is ready to selfishly bail because it doesn’t look like the Browns will ever get there. Like AB and the other fickle prima donna s.

Draft a talented hungry young guy and let him grow up with this young team Great defensed
are built with the draft not high priced free agency. Every few years a team will load up on high priced free agents and every time it fails. You can’t buy a Superbowl but some of the owners always try that route. The Bucs don’t need it.

  39. Jim H Says:

With Spytek here, they could make it happen. With him gone no way. Bucs will draft an edge rusher and Bowles will have him covering receivers on third down all year.

  40. FortMyersDave Says:

Will the Browns really trade this guy? I have been reading on Brown sites that it could cause a big cap hit for Cleveland and considering they already have a lot of coin tied up in Watson while he rehabs, a trade could really put their dead money through the roof. I get why Garrett wants to get out of a 3 dash 14 dumpster fire and play for a contender but the Browns may refuse to comply with his request.

  41. Faspro Says:

It would be nice; ain’t gonna happen…

  42. Architek Says:

This organization doesn’t emphasize edge enough to exhaust those resources in a player like Myles Garrett.

I’m not making this up. Just look at their track record since Licht and Bowles have been in Tampa. They will probably draft a guy early and wait for him to develop.

  43. Jeff Says:

lol! Glazer boys will never lay out the cash needed to land him. Same reason why Coen flew the coup. Penny pinching fools.

  44. SlyPirate Says:

What’s enough and too much is the question?

    2025 – 1st, 2024 – 2nd: I’m good with that.
    2025 – 1st, 2025 – 1st: That’s too much.

  45. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

    Jeff Says:
lol! Glazer boys will never lay out the cash needed to land him. Same reason why Coen flew the coup. Penny pinching fools.
    ———————————————————————————

@Jeff, penny pinching fools don’t offer to make their OC one of the highest paying OC’s in the NFL.

The Glazer’s are not “penny pinching fools”. But your claim is foolish. **facepalm**

  46. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

^^^^^….one of the highest PAID OC’s in the NFL.

  47. stpetebucsfan Says:

According to the Akron fishwrap here is what the Browns and fans expect in return for Garrett.

    At least two first-round picks
At least one second- and/or third-round pick
    A day three draft pick

2 first rounders and a 2nd or 3rd rounder plus a day 3 draft pick!!!

No doubt Garrett is the real deal!!! Overall #1 and double digit sacks for the past SEVEN years! 29 is no spring chicken but many edge rushers have played into their 30’s. Garrett should remain a stud for at least one contract!

Having said that…I rolled up behind a Bentley this morning and it was truly a sweet looking automobile. Blows my Buick away that’ for sure. But it would also DESTROY my budget. Probably have to sell my home. Do the Bucs want to mortgage the farm for ONE player? I do not know.

Is Garrett a head case? Again I don’t know! His reason for asking to be traded, want’s a shot at a SB sounds great but here is how people in Cleveland are feeling.

He’s under contract through 2026 and can be franchise-tagged up to three times afterward. The risk of “losing Garrett for nothing” does not exist until at least 2027, his theoretical tag year, and that’s assuming they’d only tag him once. By then he’d be 32, 10 years into his career. Even by Hall-of-Fame pass rusher standards, that’s close to the end.

I blanched yesterday about the incessant “what iffing” of the playoff game and the entire season for that matter. “What iffing after the fact is a total waste.”

“What iffing” in this situation makes sense, I get it. Personally though I’m comfortable with Jason’s decision whichever it is. I know this might sound crass but I respect Jason’s opinion more than any opinion here. Still fun to dream eh?

  48. RustyRhinos Says:

How well does GMC think Garrett will do in a 3-4 Defense coming from a 4-3 Defense? Does GMC think Garrett will also make a demand to his agent not to put him on a team that doesn’t play a 4-3 D?

I am not sure how well we would be able to use a 4-3 DE in a 3-4 system. Even as good as Garrett is.

If Garrett is okay with the change to a 3-4 D that would be the difference maker, I am also not a fan of the “cost” 1 first rd draft pick, or two?

    GO!!!!!BUCS!!!!!

  49. Mike Johnson Says:

Don’t worry. Our Bucs are too cheap to acquire Garrett. Don’t tell me they cannot afford to.T he GM to do a little extra work. Myles Garrett is a game and season changer for us and our Defense. He’s double-teamed all the time and still gets sacks, freeing up other D linemen. Dude is a straight up BEAST. You want a pass rush fans? You instantly have one with him as he also fires up other D linemen.
Ohh Well, Nothing wrong with wishful thinking. Because with our cheap Bucs? Thats all it is. You gotta want to win Badly. Its got to be a burning desire. And we..just want to win the NFL South every year. Now watch those D linemen during the superbowl. Thats how you win it all.

  50. Mastersacker 58 Says:

Doesn’t Baker and Garrett have some kind of a beef toward each other? If so,Hard Pass !!

  51. Mastersacker 58 Says:

Trade a first in 2026 and a third this year and JTS !

  52. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @MikeJohnson

“Don’t worry. Our Bucs are too cheap to acquire Garrett.”

I’m genuinely curious Mike. With genuine respect what do you base that comment on? Could you cite some specific examples or is it just a “feeling”?

  53. Jerseybuc Says:

24th in available money. We can’t compete with teams who will jump into this.

  54. unbelievable Says:

Garett, Crosby or Hendrickson would be fine with me.

FIGURE IT OUT JASON. Get some help from Greeny before he leaves you!

  55. Mobucs Says:

If he’s coming from Cleveland, he will need a culture transplant and a few months of re-education camp. This isn’t fantasy football; you don’t just plug in 15 sacks and win the SB. And that’s fewer than one sack a game. He’s a celebrity player, and deals involving celebrities go irrational; they’re gambles, and you shouldn’t pay more than you can afford to lose.

  56. Oscar Says:

In what world is Myles Garrett maybe a HOF player? He’s more than likely a first ballot HOF’er!

  57. Oscar Says:

Imo Maxx Crosby would be better for the Bucs all things considered. He’s not as good as Garrett but he’s a little younger, has a non stop motor and is not as injury prone. Garrett has had a lot of nagging type injuries and seems to get tired more easily.

  58. Krewe Since Birth Says:

I’d love to see Garrett in pewter, but if you do that you know you’ve seen the end of Godwin in pewter.

If I’m AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht, I’m thinking about a guy who’s cheaper, like Trey Hendrickson. Yeah, there’s a talent fall-off (he’s more like an A- to Garrett’s A++), but you can then keep Godwin while still upgrading your edge.

Just my two cents (and we all know how much that’s worth post-inflation).

  59. BucVoyager Says:

Garrett is a muscle factory full of production. There is no comparison between he and Crosby. Crosby plays more but Garrett has way more impact.

  60. Bucs Guy Says:

Garrett, Crosby or Hendrickson. I’m not picky.

  61. ElioT Says:

I actually agree with McCoy – Is it too late to trade Devin White, JTS and Logan Hall to CLE for Garrett????

    Can you imagine…

  62. Hydra Says:

Pass, Garett threw baker under the bus in Cleveland then ghosted him. No thanks

  63. Durango 95 Says:

When JL told Bowles of Garrett’s availability. His response…

    “Nah. We good.”

Okay , so much for that.

    Next.

  64. David Says:

Yes I think most of us agree he’s a stud and probably a first ballet hall of famer. My concern is the fact that the word was that he played on two bad wheels all season long and it was really painful for him to make it through. If this was the case what’s the injury how close to 100% do we get?If physical physical checks out and your not mortgaging the future to bad bring him in. He’s not a locker room cancer all accounts he’s a great teammate and Man of the year canadate. GO BUCS

  65. David Says:

Joe Simeon Rice is he the biggest underrated special Defensive End ever to play the game..Guy should be in the Hall Of Fame and he’s hardly ever talked about. What’s your take?
