Does Raiders-Rams Move Put Chris Godwin In Play For Vegas?
February 28th, 2025So the buzz today at the NFL Scouting Combine surrounds the Raiders, Matt Stafford and the Rams nearing a trade.
Apparently, per the Las Vegas Review-Journal, significant progress has been made.
UPDATE 1:55 p.m. — The Rams will re-negotiate Matthew Stafford’s contract and he’ll remain in Los Angeles.
That brings Joe to the Raiders’ need for receivers and the Vegas brass being very familiar with the all-around greatness of pending Bucs free agent Chris Godwin. That would be Raiders executives Tom Brady and the John Spytek, the former Bucs assistant GM. The Raiders also have a ton of salary cap room.
Godwin is recovering from a dislocated ankle, a major injury, and the Bucs need to make a decision on him in 12 short days, when Godwin officially will be free of a contract.
But the Bucs aren’t desperate to drop a bunch of money on an injured player, though Godwin is a favorite son and nobody in Tampa wants to bet against him.
The Raiders may also want Godwin for culture reasons as they look to reshape the team under new head coach Pete Carroll.
One could argue Godwin wouldn’t go where there was no legit quarterback. Vegas may no longer be in that category next week.

Not happening. Teams are petrified to throw $15-20m at a guy coming off a major injury at age 29. Chris is fantastic and a great teammate, but I don’t see other teams having the same love for him that we do. I hope we can work out a reasonable, three year deal with incentives to get him to stay

I guess Goodwin will need to decide how much money does he need vs does he want to play for a contender in the near future. He is not getting any younger. It may take both the Jags and Raiders a few years to be a legimate contender. I do believe those 2 teams are going to throw a vast amount of money his way if Goodwin hits free agency.
On the other hand I think Mr Licht is was intentionally be coy about Goodwin”s injury to make other teams cautious. The question is are the Raiders and Jags with their new ex Bucs personnel buying it. My Guess, no.
If Goodwin does hit the market I believe he will be gone.
we will see in 12 days.

I really really hope we dont try to improve the defense at the expense of the offense. I see no good coming from that.

oh boy

The offense was fine without Chris, I don’t think it’s as big a deal as fans make it out to be love Chris but coming off another major injury I don’t think there as much love as Joe thinks there is from a 29 year old receiver who has never been a number one.

No Brainer
Godwin’s last pay day = Raiders 2nd Most Cap
Godwin can block = Carroll loves to run
Godwin can catch = Raiders need a WR
Godwin was TB12’s fav target = TB12 is a Raiders owner
Godwin’s wife doesn’t like Bowles
FL Income Tax = NV Income Tax

That is exactly the type of thing that happens when you have a coordinator on one side off the ball that can’t hold up his end of the bargin. Like cancer it spreads throughout..

I’m going to say no. Godwin isn’t going to either of those organizations and that’s why him and the Bucs are trying to see what they can do to keep him here. Letting him go creates another hole on the offense that needs to be filled through the draft. I have no idea what FA WRs can fill a hole like Godwin leaving would create. The grass isn’t always greener and like it was said above, those two organizations may need some time to fill out their rosters to be competitive.

they will get Chase or Higgins
February 28th, 2025 at 11:26 am
Do the Bucs get a comp pick if he leaves?
Licht values picks more than proven good players
Meaning he’s likely gone

Godwin has a better shot at Lombardi #2 with the Bucs than the Raidets even with Stafford.
February 28th, 2025 at 11:58 am
Wouldn’t Cooper Kupp going w Stafford make more sense??
February 28th, 2025 at 12:08 pm
If the Raiders sign Stafford I’d think they’d want to go with a home run hitter like Tee Higgins.

I would like Godwin back, but not for a stupid price just because he’s by all accounts a great dude.

Who else will Brady snap up?

Rams are resigning Stafford

Unless it is on a very cheap one year deal, Godwin will not be a Buccaneer this season.

Tampa is his home. The Bucs absolutely will win more games with Chris than without him. Just ask Mayfield. The Bucs would have beat Washington if Chris was playing. He is a difference maker, and this team is family to him. He was leading the lead in several categories when he was injured. Godwin and David are priority signings imo.

There’s money and there’s where the heart is!!!
CG14 has already earned OVER SIXTY MILLION DOLLARS.
HE DOES NOT NEED MONEY!
His heart is in Tampa with the only team he’s played with in the NFL. He and ME13 have a great relationship. He has a great relationship with his QB.
His wife is very bright and enterprising and may have HER OWN interests here in Tampa.
The ODDS totally favor the Bucs retaining him. If some other franchise really wants to make a MAJOR gamble and give CG14 guaranteed money not tied to production bonuses etc then more power to them.
I hope CG14 and his lovely lady finish out their careers here in Tampa. They are a class act and add to the Tampa scene.

Joe, thanks for pointing out who Spytek is, but who’s this Brady guy you mentioned? 🤔
February 28th, 2025 at 3:31 pm
Godwin supposedly has a market value of $19 -$23 million/year.
Over on PR, they were playing cap games wishing for Godwin at $13 million/ year for three years when the Bucs already owe him #18 million whether he walks or not. The only thing resigning does for the $18 million is it lets the Bucs push some of the cap hit farther down the road.
Maybe the Bucs can get him for something like $13 million per year with performance bonuses for receptions, yards, and touchdowns that would let him hit the bigger numbers. But, can the Bucs really afford to just guarantee him $20 million-ish? Is he really go to sign for $13 million-ish.
If you were Licht, and you knew that you could not resign him, would you talk up your interest and his value to get someone else to break their bank leaving less money for them to use to bid against other players you want. And, it would be a fair way to treat an extraordinary payer you can no onger afford.

That should be go(ing) and (l)onger. Using an iPad at an arcade with the grandkids is maybe not the best way to comment. 🙃

Evans has made over 134 Million at the Bucs. Didn’t stop him from signing a 2 year deal for 25 million per season. Why should Godwin be any different?
If he fully heals the best thing he can do for his career is go somewhere where the ownership and coach want a QB that will minimize the chances of receivers getting hurt. Not just a guy looking to get his numbers.
