BSPN: Chris Godwin’s Best Decision Should Be To Remain With Bucs

February 21st, 2025

Please stay home.

Guys, things are rolling really quickly in the NFL. Before you know it, the Bucs will have a press conference to announce their new 10-sack edge rusher (Joe dreams).

Next week is the combine in cold Indianapolis. Less than two weeks later, the free agency dinner bell rings!

With illegal tampering ramping up next week in downtown Indy, it’s time to see where some of the more coveted free agents should land.

Former NFL safety and current Chicagoland high school coach Matt Bowen cobbled together a list of free agents and where he thinks they should land, not where they will land.

Among the top free agents is Bucs receiver Chris Godwin. And who does Bowen believe Godwin is the best fit for? The Bucs. Yes, Bowen thinks it would be smart of Godwin to stay home.

ontinuing to work alongside Mike Evans would be the right move for Godwin. Before suffering a season-ending left ankle injury in Week 7, Godwin’s 50 receptions over the first seven games were the most in the NFL. He’s a savvy and proven route runner with the toughness to work the heavy-traffic areas of the field for quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Since Bowen mentioned toughness, Joe will bring up again the stat from Kevin Clark that Joe found really, really interesting.

Godwin (Clark didn’t offer the exact numbers) led the NFL in taking passes behind the sticks and turning the catches into first downs. And then he got injured.

Who wouldn’t want a receiver who consistently moves the chains? And, Joe thinks Godwin may have a pair of the most underrated hands in the game. If he drops a pass, it’s time to chug. That’s how rare that is.

Yeah, Joe thinks Godwin would be smart to stay in Tampa. But the real question is what does Godwin think?

  1. Ryan Says:

Joe–are you going to Indy to cover the Combine ?

  2. BucU Says:

Take a little home town discount and end your career with the Bucs CG.

  3. stpetebucsfan Says:

    I agree with BucU!

Meanwhile I think they should go all Lenny Moore with Rachaad White!

Moore was both a great runner and receiver, lining up in the backfield as a halfback and split wide as a flanker, and was equally dangerous at both positions in the Colts’ offense run by quarterback Johnny Unitas.

White is nowhere near the runner that Moore was, but he does have equally good hands and is a good open field runner. Primarily this would provide the Bucs some needed depth without sacrificing any valuable draft picks or FA/Cap money.

Both ME13 and CG14 have fought through injuries. The greatest ability…”availABILITY” is the only question. When they’re in the lineup they both produce at Pro Bowl levels. But how hard has it been keeping them in the lineup?

Giving White the majority of his snaps at the more physical slot receiving position could ease the load on CG14 and let Grizz move him around.

Meanwhile Sean Tucker who has played very well in his limited use would finally get some more snaps to spell Bucky. Just that ONE move would help get Tucker some deserved snaps, as well as give White a chance to shine at what he does best, while taking some pressure off of CG14 to be the guy making all the contested, VIOLENT, catches in the middle of the field.

Sign CG and move RW and the Buc’s offense is set! Well except for a critical spot – backup QB!!

Finally, a logical take on Chris Godwin which is not home grown in Tampa. If one Googles “Chris Godwin”, you get all sorts of takes about how Godwin would be better off in Houston, Carolina, London/Jacksonville, DC, you name it! BTW, solid post by stpetebucsfan, Rashaad White does have potential as a flanker, lets see the new OC unlock it!

  5. Lt. Dan Says:

@Ryan: Joe cannot and should not answer that question. If the “not so good” people down in Chile learn that Joe will not be home, they will break into his house and abscond with his valuables.

  6. KABucs Says:

Maybe Joe can have Lt Dan house sit.

CG needs to stay and we grab a bull pen WR to compete with McMillan for #3 or Palmer at #4.

On to bigger needs… get a starting quality OLB in FA, the only position we’ve struck out trying to draft the past few years.

  7. heyjude Says:

Reading between the lines I feel the Bucs know that Chris is healthy rehabbed too. Of course other teams are going to want him. He and Mike are the dynamic duo and Chris really needs to stay on another season. They are also awesome for the young rookies. Possibly both he and Mike retire Bucs. I remember reading another article here about Mike wanting to go for the Olympics eventually. That is one of his goals. Maybe he and Chris can do it together.

  8. Bucs And Them Says:

Stpetebucsfan……Couldn’t agree more. The Lenny Moore comparison is right on. A modern day comparison would be how Coradelle Patterson or, Deebo Samuel are used in a hybrid role. It would seem logical since White used to be a receiver in his younger days.

  9. Bojim Says:

Chris is a Buc. Given the extension, I believe they’ll work it out.

  10. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    Let’s go Greenberg!!

  11. Gipper Says:

    stpetebucsfan,

Great thought about Lenny Moore and Rashaad White. To complete the transformation, White needs to tape his shoes to make them look like spats the way Lenny did. Glad there is somebody old enough on this site to remember Lenny. If you are that old, then you remember the greatest running back in NFL history was Jim Brown. In fact, JB was so great that he is probably the greatest pro football player of all time.

  12. SlyPirate Says:

    RAIDERS

CG will be joining the Raiders. It makes too much sense …
    1. Raiders need a WR. CG is a great receiver
    2. TB12 is an owner. CG was TB12’s fav target.
    3. Carroll loves to run the ball. CG is a great blocker.
    4. CG wants to get paid. Raiders have the 2nd most cap.

  13. RustyRhinos Says:

We all might as well stay home, and never leave the house ain’t that right Lt. Dan??? With all of the “not so good” people from the Tampa Bay area, who would….. Amirite there LT. Dan?

In 2024 Bradenton 289 car break-ins where 44 handguns were stolen, 2022 in Tampa 1,861 vehicle break-ins. So yeah I could see it as a national issue and an international ring to do these thefts… But yeah.

  14. Aqualung Says:

Lenny Moore also threw one of the most famous halfback option passes of all time. Not sure if Rachaad can throw but the usage idea is what I thought we would get last year. Except we really didn’t. Hope Griz listens to spbf. Good one.

  15. Mike Johnson Says:

I will not blame Goodwin if he goes after the Money. Look out for yourself first. To hell with a hometown discount. Careers are short. Take the money and run. Thats what I did in my career when I left Tampa for more money. Best move I ever made in my life.

  16. Henry Says:

    @ rustyhino

What are you some kind of bully? You like just waiting to pounce on someone’s comment. Take your meds man.

  17. Mike in LOL Says:

SPBF I love that, been saying to my buddies for years that White should be moved to WR. He’s far better as a receiver than runner, imo, and the stats kind of prove it.

  18. stpetebucsfan Says:

Totally agree about Jim Brown. I haven’t really seen anything like him since.

He had NO mouth but plenty of ‘tude. I loved his response when media asked him why did he always walk back to the huddle so slowly like he’s just been crushed.

His reply, “If I walk back like that everytime they never know when they “really” did get a lick in. He was a consummate athlete and pro always looking for the edge. He was also one of the rare guys who went out on top with plenty of mileage left on his wheels. Quit after year nine when he put up over 1500 yards in the shorter schedule.

Perhaps he found it more enjoyable rolling around on camera with Raquel Welch than running into beasts like Big Daddy Lipscomb.

Bucandthem YES..Deebo Samuels great “modern” comparison.

I guess rolling around with Raquel Welch beat smashing into the likes of

Gipper. You have need to go back to your team because they have a lot of problems. But let me guess if Can Ward start balling and the browns are winning you will be back a Browns fan just like the Patriots fans left after Brady? Lol 😂😂

    ======================================
I don’t care about the Browns at all. Somebody here the other day said that Michael Vick went to prison a couple of years for abusing dogs. Browns paid women abuser, Deshaun Watson, $235Mill guaranteed. Browns management is horrible.

You Gentlemen are right on. As I stated a couple days ago in my post, Rashaad could be very good as a Lenny Moore type Flanker, slot receiver, running back. As a receiver he runs harder and can run over Corners and Safeties. Plus the usage of all three backs will mean fresher legs throughout the game and season. CG14 does not have to take all those brutal hits on 3rd downs going for the line to gain. Bucs should also consider using Devin Culp in this scheme and CG14 slot position. same speed but bigger target and body. This usage would allow for savings that could be used to get the Edge Rusher that we all want via FA and or the Draft. Let’s go Bucs
