Will Pro Bowl Snub Ignite Baker Mayfield?

January 2nd, 2025

Joe suspects a person or two at One Buc Palace is quietly smiling today.

The Pro Bowl roster was issued by the NFL this morning, as Joe wrote earlier, and Baker Mayfield is not among the three quarterbacks named to the NFC. Those honors went to Jayden Daniels, Sam Darnold and Jared Goff.

Do Darnold and Daniels have better numbers than Mayfield? No.

And that’s just the kind of snub that becomes fuel for a guy like Mayfield, who loves reasons to be angry in a good way.

The mighty Bucs offense has just one Pro Bowler, Tristan Wirfs? Josh Jacobs is in over Bucky Irving?

Mayfield was named an alternate, so he’ll get a call-up to the Pro Bowl if one of the three QBs above him skip the festivities.

Hopefully, Mayfield is the one skipping because he’s in full Super Bowl prep.

Just the usual politics and snubbing. I lost interest in it years ago.

  2. Casual Observer Says:

    Ridiculous snub.

  3. Lol Says:

    Quite the sub. Lol.

I lost so much respect for the Probowl in the 2010’s tbh. Literally shake my head and roll my eyes whenever I hear anything about it. its easily the worst all star game where it used to be the best……

The fan voting is always skewed.

Why in the F*&%$ hall of fame voters even consider this POS contest a valuable measure of a players credentials to make it into the hall, is well beyond me.

Why in the F*&%$ hall of fame voters even consider this POS contest a valuable measure of a players credentials to make it into the hall, is well beyond me.

    Here is why:

Generally, the Pro Bowl doesn’t reward the Sabby the Goats of the world. Generally, guys that make it are at worst OK players.

And, the vast majority of players have contract bonuses for making it to the Pro Bowl.

Agree with you on the worthlessness of the “game” but Joe doesn’t recall Vi Jones or SnoopDog McPlaybook ever making it.

I have been watching the Pro Bowls for years and last year was happy to see Baker win MVP and sit at the big table with the sport analysts. But in these past years, my interest is waning too. Bucs seem to get ignored and the games are getting lamer and lamer. There is so much they could do to really make it watchable and fair.

Really hoping we are in Super Bowl mode and let the Pro Bowl eat cake.

  6. Gipper Says:

Here is why Baker was snubbed—->The All-Pro Team is an annual selection of the best players in the NFL by position as selected by a national panel of AP media members.

The media people have been wrong on Baker for the last 4 years. They aren’t going to see the light ever. We have seen the same thing in the national political scene where they consistently missed. The AP media, as most know, is just a drinking club made up of people who majored in journalism in college. Journalism isn’t engineering. It is considered a lightweight major. Good “journalists’ are hard to find. The really good ones have already left the newspaper industry.

  7. Lt. Dan Says:

Ahhhh the Pro Bowl. I used to work the AFC sideline every year when the “game” was in Hawaii. That alone made it a pretty cool experience. It felt like every single player was mic’ed up. Today though, I guess it’s an honor to be named to the Pro Bowl, but the festivities and the “game” have become unrecognizable. I haven’t watched it in years.

  8. Ds Says:

    More interested in AP

  9. ModHairKen Says:

It’s a fan vote. Come on. Who cares? The Pro Bowl does not even involve a game anymore.

  10. First Name Greatest Says:

    It’s really not a fan vote…

Fans, Players and Coaches votes are how players get in

It’s why it’s important to play well in Prime Time games as you are the showcase game

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The All-Pro Team means more to me. If I were a player, I would snub the probowl every year.

  12. Zoocomics Says:

@First Name Greatest…good point on playing well in Prime-Time games. That has not been our MO.

  13. Bucsgoham12 Says:

He will technically make it when guys drop out.

I doubt he makes All Pro because I believe only 1 QB is on each AP team. Lamar, Allen, Burrow are going to be ranked before him.

  14. D-Rok Says:

I think the skills showcase/challenges they recently started doing is MUCH more interesting than the powder-puff “game.”

I mean, I’d really like to know which QB can throw the farthest or fastest.

The NFL needs to either play the game for real or just cancel the game. We don’t need no stinkin’ flag football game. Haven’t watched the game in over a decade with no plans to watch this year, either.

  15. BucU Says:

I’d tell them to take a hike if the NFL called and said one of the NFC QB’s dropped out.

  16. Bucthis Says:

Lamar, Burrow and Allen are all in the NFC!

  17. Pmike Says:

    What’s the Pro Bowl?

  18. Pewter Pirate Says:

I get Goff completely and Darnold to extent. Both Cousins and Darnold look like All Pros with Justin Jefferson. Mayfield has the patchwork WR core and missing Evans for 4 games and Godwin for most of the season. I do not get Jayden Daniels at all only 25 TDs compared to Mayfield 39, should not even be close.

  19. Slacker Says:

Ignite? If everyone played with the effort and heart of this guy, we’d be clinched in the playoffs already.

  20. Architek Says:

Definitely has become more of a contractual and performance metric versus game experience.

  21. MelvinJunior Says:

“Bucthis” – the guys you mentioned are AFC QB’s. Regardless, the “All-Pro” Team is a ‘league-wide’ award (not broken down by conference), & there is a 1st-Team & a 2nd-Team. Best I can remember, anyway!?

  22. Jp1979 Says:

Pro bowl=joke….. Bucs will be in the super bowl anyways so non of this matters

  23. MelvinJunior Says:

I will admit “Baker vs Daniels” is a tough one. Daniels will prob be the better player (definitely has the ‘higher’ upside), in the long run. But, I don’t see how you can give it to him over Baker for THIS season.

  24. Let ‘em bake Says:

Did baker have a $ incentive or pro bowl? Wonder if he lost $ because of the snub.

  25. Erik w/ UniqueModernArt.com Says:

So, Baker was a ProBowler last year and he didn’t make it THIS YEAR?

OMG. You know what this mean, Buc Fans????

We’re probably winning the SB this year now.

What a slight! Such disrespect, it’s ridiculous.

  26. Wyoming Joe Says:

    Baker vs Daniels…hmmmm?

Baker should have been the pick because his numbers speak for themselves. I think that Daniels is an exciting player, but was chosen because he’s the favorite flavor of the month. Baker had better stats than Daniels did in 2018 as well. As I recall, Baker broke Peyton Manning’s record for most TDs (27) thrown by a rookie, and he did it in 13 games. And, no, Baker wasn’t chosen for a Pro Bowl that year either.

The Pro Bowl is almost as big a joke as the Rock’n Roll HOF.

I hope that Daniels isn’t cursed with having a different HC and OC almost every year the way Baker did.

  27. Ugotrobbed Says:

Could care less about the Pro Bowl anymore…but if the snubbing serves as motivation for the team…then great! Maybe take them on a 4 game win streak!
    Go Bucs!!

  28. Hodad Says:

If I was Baker and got the call after someone drops out I’d tell them to go pound sand.

  29. CleanHouse Says:

He’s the reigning Pro Bowl MVP…having a great year. Pretty Absurd.

Did baker have a $ incentive or pro bowl? Wonder if he lost $ because of the snub.u/blockquote>According to S.I. – Mayfield has five different incentives he can hit in the regular season. Should he finish in the top 10 in the NFL or top 5 in the NFC in touchdown passes, passer rating, passing yards, completion percentage or yards per pass, he’ll get $500,000 — as such, he has the potential to earn an extra $2.5 million every year in the regular season.

Then, of course, come the playoffs. He can make the remaining $2.5 million here — he earns $500,000 for a win in the Wild Card Round (or a first-round bye from earning the No. 1 seed), $750,000 for a Divisional Round victory, $500,000 for winning the conference championship game and then another $750,000 if Mayfield takes the Bucs to the promised land and wins a Super Bowl

  32. Rod Munch Says:

David is having one of the best seasons of his career and he’s snubbed? That’s by far the biggest travesty here. It’s also why the Pro-Bowl, with idiot fans voting, is such a joke. Anyone that takes it seriously is a moron.

  33. Kieran Says:

Further proof that the NFL and BSPN doesn’t respect our beloved Bucs.

Watch Baker Buckey snd Evan’s explode this weekend

    LFG!!!!

  34. Rayjay1122 Says:

Sucking on prime time nationally televised games also does not help the average American football Fan’s impressions of Bucs players when casting their votes.

  35. Bucschamp Says:

Kelce is there because of the swifties

  36. It's Corn Says:

Pro Bowl voting is really dumb. They never get it right.

  37. Badbucs Says:

Good for Baker and the Bucs to not include a fake prize as part of the incentive package. Go Baker. Go Bucs.

  38. Drunkinybor Says:

No surprise at all. Ronde is a Hall of famer and a legend and I quote ” Pro Bowl My A$$ im going to San Diego!” END quote

  39. Bucsgoham12 Says:

“Lamar, Burrow and Allen are all in the NFC”
All Pro does not go by AFC & NFC it is free for all and those 3 are in MVP running so they are the options.

  40. I'm a Tandyman Bucs Fan Again Says:

If I were Baker, Alternate would not be in my vocabulary!!!! I wouldn’t say anything to anybody and if they did call me and say you’re in as an alternate I would say naw I’m not that guy !!!! See ya!!! He’s had a phenomenal Season!!! Look at his Numbers and tell me he’s an Alternate!!!!!! N A W

  41. David Says:

Pro bowl is a joke but unfortunately it matters for the HOF. LVD is going to get hurt by that.

Baker is already ignited. The DEFENSE needs to be ignited.

  42. Dan Marino Says:

In the words of the immortal Ronde:

“Pro Bowl my ass I’m going to San Diego (site of Super Bowl 37) baby!”

    ************

Although a great honor, participating in the Pro Bowl means you fell short of the ultimate prize.

I (and this may get me laughed out of the room) have more faith in this team being better longer than I had in Brady’s team after the Super Bowl win.
