Todd Bowles Looks Like A Defensive Guru After Lions’ Loss

January 18th, 2025

How bout those Commanders! After needing stunning Buccaneers errors on offense to score 23 points to beat Tampa Bay on Sunday night, Washington came out tonight and dropped 45 points on the Lions — in Detroit.

They even scored 31 in the first half and missed a field goal late.

Despite having a guy many consider a superstar defensive coordinator in Aaron Glenn, the Lions literally had no answers. Washington rolled up nearly 500 yards.

What does this say about Todd Bowles, the Bucs head coach/defensive coordinator who is public enemy No. 1 for a lot of Tampa Bay fans?

Joe’s not sure if the Lions-Commanders result is relevant to the state of the Bucs, but it sure is something to think about. It’s easy to argue now that Bowles’ defense was nowhere near as ugly as it might have appeared Sunday.

Man, Joe would love to see what was being typed tonight in the Team Glazer group text.

The mighty Lions are dead in the NFC. The Eagles, a team Todd Bowles’ Bucs owned this season and last, is the favorite to face the Commanders in next week’s NFC Championship game.

Joe wonders if a sect of Lions fans now will start screaming for head coach Dan Campbell’s head because he chokes in big games — and because the team can’t afford to lose its star offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

Five turnovers was the difference, can’t win turning the ball over.

  2. Bucs 95 Says:

Mayfield > goff in the postseason

  3. Steven007 Says:

Every game is different. We played them tight last week but only had seven possessions because they had extended drives. Tonight’s game was a shootout. But certain posters whose name rhymes with lunch think there’s only one person to blame for the loss last week. Just wait, he’ll tell you. Like an idiot.

  4. Tye Says:

Lions beat themselves with all them turnovers, BUT nice reach!

  5. Rod Munch Says:

Baker, Donald, Goff — all reject QBs, all choked big time in the playoffs.

  6. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

Todd “no punts for Washington” Bowles a defensive guru…Joe, please call the Uber to bring you home now. You’ve obviously had way more than one too many adult beverages at Hooters tonight. 😝

  7. Oregon Buc Says:

Do not care what anyone thinks, we were the better team last week. Lost on a fluky fumble. Anyone watching that game knows that we were going down the field to put the game away on that drive. Defense couldn’t get us the ball back unfortunately. Contrary to what Ira says, the Redskins aren’t some great team despite all the Daniels hog gargling

  8. Steven007 Says:

Munchkin, what about Stroud? And tomorrow you can add Jackson or Allen to that list as well. Bunch of bums…

  9. Pewter Power Says:

I’m going to pretend joes are joking with that insane hot take. The 5 turnovers had a lot to do with it. Daniels is hella accurate though

  10. FortMyersDave Says:

Comparing the 2 games is like comparing apples snd oranges but the Lions had 5 turnovers, which they overcame vs Houston but not tonight. Their star receiver, Ra St Brown, had some drops too. One difference between the Detroit head coach and Bowles; Campbell will probably take responsibility and be accountable. Bowles never takes the blame…

  11. GoneGator Says:

    LMFAO 🙂

Thanks Dan, for proving all “our” points and making the Turd Hunters look stoopid

  12. QBKilla Says:

How many starters were the Lions missing on D tonight?

  13. stpetebucsfan Says:

Again the social scientists have determined humans 80% negative thinking 20% positive. It’s literally human nature and it’s no more prevalent anywhere than among sports fans.

While I consider myself a positive person I definitely fall into the second group.
90% of our thoughts are the same thoughts over and over again!

It’s hard to break out of Bowles sucks. It’s hard for anybody to say I was wrong!
So we see some hard core still blaming everything on Baker without the realization the Bucs wouldn’t have been in the playoffs the past two seasons without him.

Bowles has improved his record all three seasons after the sh!t show Brady put on for Todd’s first year as HC saddled with Leftwich and an old over the hill Brady, losing his family for his lie, retiring for 40 freaking days during which time he was trying to hook up with another team. Todd’s first year was DISTRACTION PLUS. Just like he somehow managed to win ten games in New York, Todd somehow survived all the distractions.

Given they know exactly what is going on, IF the Glazers do not come out and say forcefully Todd has EARNED another season I’ll lose a lot of respect for them! At this point it’s not enough to simply let him keep his job, they need to endorse him NOW IF they’re going to keep him. I’m sure a lot of FA’s are looking to go to a team whose HC is on the chopping block.

Let’s see what happens to Campbell with Lions fans and without his star OC?

Munchkin, what about Stroud? And tomorrow you can add Jackson or Allen to that list as well. Bunch of bums…

    ———-

Dummy, a ‘reject’ QB is one whose original team didn’t want them and they got shipped off somewhere else.

Sometimes I forget how dumb Baker Boi(s) are, and that’s on me for overestimating them.

  15. GoneGator Says:

Now let the Todd sucks crowds desperate attempts to explain why their Krush got outcoached, how its “different”, etc begin.

It’s probably not Dans fault though right? But it’s always Todd’s!

  16. Curse of Gruden Says:

Extent Bowles before someone trades for him.

  17. Rod Munch Says:

The Bucs defense gave up 16 points last week.

Made a HUGE 4th quarter goal line stand and gave Baker the ball back with the chance to go up 2 scores and put the game away.

    Those are the facts.

We all know Baker choked the game away from there, but the defense did their job, and way overachieved.

  18. OR Buc Says:

Yup. The D wasn’t our problem. 23 points allowed. We didn’t capitalize enough on our opportunities and had a few more mistakes offensively.

  19. Steven007 Says:

Munchkin, I wasn’t speaking to the reject part. Where did I mention that? And what does that have to do with it Anyway? If a quarterback loses a playoff game, he’s a bum apparently. That’s exactly what you’ve implied. First team, second team, why does it make a difference? Plus our guy has one playoff games with two teams. But you can try and talk it back. Like an idiot.

  20. Steven007 Says:

    * Won playoff games

  21. Jamesrunningwilder Says:

Let’s not forget that Washington CREATED those Turnovers. Give them Credit, their Defense made plays against a high-powered offense.

  22. Steven007 Says:

Speak for yourself Munchkin. “We” don’t all know that, in fact “we” mostly disagree with your idiotic assessment.

  23. Jamesrunningwilder Says:

The Baker fumble was on Baker/McMillan. The play call was a Great Play call because when you look back at the replay, Washington was out of position and the play would’ve gone for huge yards.

  24. DBS Says:

Traskie wants attention.Ignore him. He wanted Trask from the beginning. Just look back at the archives.

  25. BallHawk75 Says:

More proof the NFL is a rigged WWE sideshow.

Vegas made a ton of money today.

No one on earth can explain why the Chiefs ran a purposeful safety into their own end zone. But it did change the spread winner to Houston. Vegas cleaned up.

Suddenly Detroit looks like a scrub team picking in the top 5 of the draft? Yeah right. Once again Vegas cleans up.

It’s all narrative driven story telling for the weak minded to be distracted from reality.

  26. Couch Fan Says:

LMAO I knew this was coming. Anything to try to make The ReTodd look better than he is.

  27. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Rod

Dude! Quit while you’re behind! You are posting like a whiny little beotch upset that all your proclamations about Baker before his first season have been upended. It’s OK to be wrong!!!

The biggest lies are the ones we tell ourselves.

I’m one of your jousting opponents here and I respect your football knowledge and your passion. Sometimes however you get a little “emotional” over JW love and Baker and his “bois” (sorry to be so damn dumb but what does that mean anyway) IF I’m going to be insulted I’d like to understand what I’m being called. I’m not sure I qualify as a Bakerboi but I have no problem if I do.

I guess that makes me a Bowlesboi as well as most importantly a Bucboi.

  28. adam from ny Says:

wow washington is whoopin’ azz…..and takin’ prisoners…

geez man…did you see the cameras flip to the detroit fans in the stands towards the end of the game…

    shell shockingly glum bunch

  29. Bucsfan951 Says:

Lol what weak opinion! The Bucs offense only had the ball 3 times in the second half of that game. 3 times! The defense couldn’t get off the field. Your opinion is so skewed!

Whatever Joe this is… put down the effing drink and go to bed!!! You’re drunk and talking out of your arse.

  30. toopanca Says:

Two very good team played a very good, very close game.

Why do we need a culprit? It was good football!

It wasn’t the ending that I wanted. But, if I just wanted to see the Bucs win, I would reply a Bucs Super Bowl win – again.

  31. Pewter Power Says:

You try to spin it however you want but nobody in Detroit is talking about revamping their defense or dumb ish like hiring a consultant or getting a new coordinator. It’s simple their defense is decimated by injuries but they had (A) bad game. Don’t bee stupid and try to compare defenses

  32. RBUC Says:

    Ballhawk75
Truest statement I’ve read on this site!! Deep down people know it’s true they don’t want to admit it though cause looking in the mirror they question why get so worked up about outcomes of the NFL!! I believe the coaches are involved in helping the outcomes happen!! Bowles wins and loses the games the league wants him too( including Dan Campbell) Vegas made a killing today

  33. Aqualung Says:

Goff went Full Retard. Turned it over 5 times all by himself. If he only went half retard, Lions win that one by 7. Neither Aaron Glenn nor Ben Johnson passed any job interviews today with that performance.

Dan Campbell >>> anyone whose current title is Bucs head coach and defensive coordinator. His QB turned it over 5 times! Good golly. Goff is going to have a tough offseason.

  34. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Pewter Power

Good chance both their coordinators are gone.. so it’s academic that there will be conversation about replacing them..

  35. Dadgumit Says:

The Lions had 30 different starters on defense this year and look how they did. That stat puts Todd Bowles to shame. Why oh why do you defend Todd Bowles? He is a looser… look at his NFL Head coaching record! Doh!

You depend on defending him so you get invited to the 1x1s, etc. I get it. But, being a goober is obviously transparent and not at all honest to your constituency. Goober Joe is as Goober Joe types!

  36. Jmarkbuc Says:

Yep. A lot of this is on Goff. When you have a decimated defense, you can’t afford to have your QB make stupid turnovers.

  37. Dom Says:

Lmao his defense didn’t force a punt the whole game, was on the field for 35 minutes, amd gave the offense only 7 possessions to work with

  38. MadMax Says:

We’re good….its all good….just pshtt chill…other thread got too heated i guess, its closed now lol

Bottom line, we’ve got to figure things out and get over whats in the past…learn from it but get over it…things happen for a reason…weve got a great team, great players and coaches, and of course scouting staff.

    We got this…you’ll see….

  39. Tbbucs3 Says:

Liam Coen and the Bucs offense gave that game away…..

Bowles defense held their own against a explosive offense

    Simple as that.

    But Coen for HC! LOL!

  40. K Says:

    Stop

  41. Couch Fan Says:

What other thread? What did I miss?

  42. BucsFan81 Says:

Commanders got hot at the right time and they are playing with house money and shouldn’t have got as far as they have. It happens we see it all the time where the hot team keeps winning in the playoffs. Daniels isn’t playing like a rookie though. Campbell and the Lions are never winning a Super Bowl with Goff he sucks. Also Bowles still sucks and will be fired after we watch the next season un fold like the last two.

  43. Ozlynn Says:

Hey Munch, as long as you are calling people stupid, it’s DARNOLD, not Donald. I know, it’s petty but it fits…

  44. Brent Clark Says:

INJURIES folks, that makes a big difference! Lions had 30 different defensive players on the field this year! We were in the same boat extra games need extra player or main roster. Look at the amount of injuries across the league, another thing walk through practices are making the players too soft for the live games hence all the achilles and hamstring injuries. So with that said our Bucs only loosing to the Foreskins i don’t feel so bad but truly changes need to be made to protect the players and the game itself. GO BUCS!!!!

  45. It's Corn Says:

Yeah, but the Commanders didn’t punt once against the Bucs and only turned it over on failed 4th down conversions. Not sure that makes you a defensive guru genius.

  46. Tautology Says:

Washington’s offense is hot as an LA fire right now and there’s no reason they can’t win the NFC, or for that matter, the SB–not saying they will but they are no longer an underdog-with-no shot team.

If we are going to hang with them in the future, we need a much stronger DL and a true lockdown CB. The best defense against them is still a great offense that can control the clock.

  47. It's Corn Says:

How many errors did the Bucs make on offense, 2? Detroit turned it over 5 times.

  48. GoneGator Says:

    Wow, just Wow.

I predicted the types of responses from you Todd sucks no matter what club, but damn some of yall went full conspiracy theory on us – lol.

You Campbell lovers….. Smh at yalls double standard.
Bigotry plain and simple. You’d crucify Todd for fielding that defense but try to explain it away for Dan.

Carry on but you’re starting to look desperate 🙁

  49. Aqualung Says:

Tautology, valid point. And, we need a proper, modern defensive coordinator who knows how to teach assignments and not give away passing yards like they’re Halloween candy.

  50. DBS Says:

LMAO. Now you want to blame injuries. After all posters coming here stating the Lions built depth. How great Campbell has managed the defensive injuries and that is why they are 15-2. This is their year and going to the Super Bowl. NOW you want to yell injuries because Washington hung 45 points on them? LMFAO.

  51. Ha-Ha-Ha Says:

Do you think we have it bad? How would you like to be a Bears fan and know that you whiffed on a quarterback again.

  52. Aqualung Says:

The LMAO statement is “Todd Bowles” and “defensive guru” in the same phrase. To the point some like to bring up now — Lions lost because Goff went full retard, threw a pick 6 , fumbled in scoring range, through another pick in the endzone to take points off the board at end of half. Lions gave Jayden Daniels 5 extra possessions and they lost by 2 scores. If he just only goes half retard, Lions win. It’s that simple.

  53. Tbbucs3 Says:

Go easy on Munch guys, he we would still rather have Winstons 30 for 30 season than Bakers 41 TD 16 Int season….its not easy being so wrong for so long about Baker Mayfield.

  54. Pewter Power Says:

Both bowls and Campbell and defenses were decimated with injuries. I guess the most obvious difference no one can debate is only one of them will start next season on the hot seat

  55. GoneGator Says:

Yes Tautology those are valid points.

    I’d add.

Our defense definitely did a better job against them than Detroit did. Absolutely.
Undeniably to most people with functional reasoning ability 🙂

I think our D-line is a strength of the D, relatively speaking, although if we can get a stud for the line I’m all for it as long as we address more pressing, imo, needs.
Corner(s), safety, ILB would be my priorities.

  56. Tbbucs3 Says:

The Fire Bowels crowd looks about as dumb as the Trask mob.

  57. BallHawk75 Says:

The race baiting crowd have run out of excuses for their preferred front man.

They have no logical arguments for this Groundhog Day marathon.

The only way the NFL allows you to win is if you can conjure the best narrative.

For now it’s Mahomes and T-Swift bringing in the viewership dollars.

Bowles is happy to play the stoic mild mannered loser.

Someone that crowd can relate to.

  58. Dubcity Says:

The Bowles haters are losing all credibility

  59. Stanglassman Says:

Who’s the one that brought up race?

Why would Vegas make more money when underdog or the favorites win?
Why do people most ignorant about a subject have such strong ridiculous beliefs?

  60. heyjude Says:

If Bowles was available there would be at least three teams right now that would hire him. He is doing a good job as head coach while transitioning through two OCs in two years, rookies, injuries, veteran injuries, and yes two hurricanes. They did well and should have won the Commanders. But that game wasn’t all him either. Bowles is a keeper.

  61. Defense Rules Says:

Each game, win or lose, stands on its own merit. However, it seems that ‘Teams beat themselves’ holds true more times than not.

In the case of the Lions-Commanders game, the Lions’ offense scored 31 points & that SHOULD be enough to win just about any game. Unfortunately for them, that same offense turned the ball over FIVE times, and that’s enough to lose any game. Three things stood out in that game to me:

1 – Washington won the TOP Battle by almost 8 minutes (33:59 to 26:01) although they only ran 5 more plays (73 to 68).

2 – Washington won the Turnover Battle by PLUS 5 (0 T/Os for Commanders to 5 T/Os for Lions).

3 – Washington went for it on 4th down 4 times and made 3 of them (75% success) to keep drives alive instead of punting (Lions went for it 2 times BTW, and made both of those to keep drives alive). Each team only punted ONCE (thus the high scoring game?).

Those very same things actually stood out to me in the Bucs-Commanders game.

1 – Washington won the TOP Battle by almost 9 minutes (35:26 to 24:34) because they ran far more plays (69 to 44).

2 – Washington won the Turnover Battle by PLUS 1 (0 T/Os for Commanders to 1 T/O for Bucs). But yes, it was a critical turnover because it occurred deep in Bucs’ territory (our 13-yard-line and Commanders scored a TD off it).

3 – Washington went for it on 4th down 5 times and made 3 of them (60% success) to keep drives alive instead of punting (Bucs went for it ZERO times on 4th down BTW, and settled for FGs twice & punted twice on 4th down.

Dan Quinn made a really gutsy call in the 4th quarter when our defense had held the Commanders to a 4th-and-2 on the Bucs 5-yard-line (AFTER our lone turnover) … AND HE WENT FOR IT instead of kicking a FG. THAT 4-point difference (TD vs FG) won the ballgame for them.

  62. Hodad Says:

I think it shows continuity isn’t such a good thing. The Lions, and Bucs have been building to be a contender, Washington has done it overnight. Daniels first year sensation, paired with Quinn, Kingsberry shows you can have a quick turn around in this league. Like the Lions this year, Washington won’t be sneaking up on anybody next season. You can bet D.C.’s who have them on their schedule are watching film now. So keeping the same coach, and staff, and expecting better results might not always work, where something new does.

  63. Gipper Says:

    RodMunch has a tiny:
    A) brain
    B) vocabulary
    C) Michael Penix
    D) all of the above

  64. jimmy Says:

the lions had more yards offense than the commanders, they lost the time of possession battle the same way the bucs did.

commanders are smart and efficient keeping the high powered offenses of their opponents off the field. the offense is supplementing the defense by not just scoring points, they score points and drain the clock.

daniels is not intimidated at all by the speed of the nfl vs college. he is really impressive regardless of how much further they get….some of his throws are so hard and so fast, so it isnt just running around.

  65. Defense Rules Says:

Hodad … ‘So keeping the same coach, and staff, and expecting better results might not always work, where something new does.’

By the same token however, the Jets have had 3 (soon to be 4) new HCs since Todd Bowles, so hiring new coaches doesn’t always yield great results either. IMO Hodad, it takes the whole enchilada to be a winning organization … Ownership, GM & his staff, HC, coordinators, position coaches, quality players.

Being a 10-7 team in today’s NFL essentially puts a team in the 2nd tier (#9-#16 overall), and that’s pretty much where the Bucs are right now. Six teams had 10-7 records this year … and 5 of them made the playoffs (they’ve all been eliminated already BTW). Nine teams had better records than us, and 7 of those are still in the hunt. For us to move up into the Top-tier, Bucs surely need to improve our roster (some starters & depth especially), but we also need to relook at the staff (coordinators & position coaches). And that’s exactly what they’re doing right now from what I’ve read. Time will tell how effectively we do that.

  66. BucU Says:

Bowles would absolutely not be hired as HC by anybody if he got fired here. Virtually every HC that got fired this year was defensive minded.
It’s amazing the selective memory some you have. His resume sucks.

  67. NiceTry Says:

    Nice try, Joe. Terrible post.

  68. RBUC Says:

Bowles wasn’t on the hot seat to begin the season last year and regardless of what you fools think the Glazers won’t view Bowles as a hot seat candidate Coach next season. DEAL WITH IT HATERS they know where the talent level is at on this team and they also know whether the Bucs have made a REAL push to win in terms of spending money!! Ira said he got his info from the TOP and they have targeted 2025 when they will REALLY make a push to win a Superbowl!!

  69. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @D.R.

As always excellent analysis. I’m not too lazy to research careers and seasons but I don’t do game analysis nearly as well as you.

I agree how about the importance of TOP but where I disagree with many here is that it’s a stat based simply on how well the D gets off the field. The other side of the equation is just as important. The OFFENSE has to possess the ball as well as the D stopping the other team. Sometimes the O places too much on the D.

In your 1) point about TOP to the Commanders but not that many more plays I wonder if that’s a bit of an anomaly. IMHO overall the D did better than expected while the O did not play up to their normal time consuming history this season. But I’m not really concerned about ONE game. The fact that the Bucs hung in as well as they did given Liam’s flat offense I think bodes well for the future.

As an aside…good luck in the week or so you face one of life’s adventures. I did have a heart attack (they tell me) but it was a Type II resulting from spasms of the arteries not blockage. No stents. My wife OTOH had major open heart surgery a dozen years ago to repair her mitral valve at TGH. It went very well as I’m sure your’s will whatever the procedure.

She just had a knee replaced and always is afraid when she’s anethesized.

I believe however for anybody who faced down the fear of flying a jet over Vietnam you’ve got this covered. Whatever GOOD LUCK! I’m sure there are some here more qualified than me to say some great prayers for you. I’ll have you in my meditations and I have a Shamrock tattooed on my thigh with the banner “Luck of the Irish”. I’m sending that luck your way!

  70. stpetebucsfan Says:

    RBUC

Agree with you completely. Having said that there are many who disagree with us. I think the Glazers should man up and put this to rest with a statement that Todd’s job is not in jeopardy for NEXT season. Let’s see how he does next year!

  71. Zman Says:

Stop it the Lions had 5 TO. Nobody wins with 5 TO. I f Philly wins today the Commanders season ends next week. Lions had a lot of self inflicted wounds.

  72. JBBUCS_06 Says:

I posted on another thread. Wash is a top 5 offense. The Bucs D gave the Bucs O the ball LEADING 17-13 in the 4th. Wash had 31 AT THE HALF against the Lions. 13 vs 31. TOs or not, Bucs D was doing its job. Objective is to stop them from scoring, Todd’s D did that.

WE DID NOT LOSE BECAUSE OF DEFENSE. In the playoffs, mistake free football and execution wins, no matter the side of the ball. Bowles’ D did not give up Wash avg point total nor nearly as many explosives as Lions D. THIS is after losing JWhitehead and Dean and playing a practice squad ILB. Give Bowles defense his credit and stop hating!!!

Liam did great except trusting a rookie deep in your own territory. The call is a great call had we made perhaps one more first down and we run it from our 35yd line or 45yd line. BUT NOT after ME13 had to use go-go-gadget arms JUST to get ONE first down. This isn’t hard to analyze.

Our O needed to maximize EVERY possession, LIKE Quinn did! If Wash didn’t score, they chewed clock because they knew ONLY BUCS O could beat Bucs O, and that’s what happened with penalties, poor execution and costly TO…..and one poor play call choice.

  73. Big Wally Says:

    Hey munch whiner

How about that awful re-tread Steve Young or Vinny. Were they chokers?

Can’t be a bucs fan if you root against the QB just to make your thesis come true.

  74. Lightningvinny Says:

The real thing about hiring these OCs,, Coen and Johnson should actually take a back seat to Kingsberry,,, he seems to be calling better plays and he has head coaching experience but I’m not sure he is included in the hot coordinator buzz!

  75. Okiejim Says:

Does not matter how you slice the pie, but championships are won by the defense more often than not! Whether it be stopping the opponent on 4th down or manufacturing turnovers, the defense sets the tone for the game. As for the Commanders, it would not surprise me if the Super Bowl is a match between the Chiefs and the Commanders!

  76. Zman Says:

Oh and I forgot, they didn’t punt. Oh and that blitz a few yearscago against thevrams to set up the game winning FG.
Whats his record? How deep has Bowles teams gone in the playoffs? How many picks this year?

  77. Bartow Buc Says:

Yep Joe I was thinking the same thing last night and wondering if you would post on it. The Bucs defense was really only responsible for 16 points due to the turnover deep in Lions territory. That makes the Bucs Defense look fabulous!!
The Bucs offense just has to eliminate those costly mistakes and they should be fine !!
It’s just killing me that the Bucs are out of contention !!

Still Love Baker and our Bucs !!

    Go Bucs !!

  78. Bartow Buc Says:

Joe, if the Commanders face Philly I believe they have a great chance of defeating them and going on to the Super Bowl !!

    Go Bucs !!

  79. Zoocomics Says:

Anyone questioning what championship coaches look like? Since Bowles doesn’t look like one, or I guess coach like one? Is it fiery Campbell? Pretty sure we could do an AI pull to find out how many time management or coaching blunders he made throughout the season, and he wasn’t even calling plays.

Yeah, it’s exactly what I’ve been saying, there are 31 other teams with coaches not named Andy Reid, that are trying to be Championship coaches, and Harbaugh is the only guy that can say otherwise, everyone else just ends up being a loser.

BTW…THE WASHINGTON COMMANDERS DID IN FACT PUNT THE FOOTBALL DURING THE WILD CARD GAME AGAINST US. SMH.

  80. BigBucsFan Says:

It’s really simple it can all be solved with eye test watch or check out the stats of Washington commanders last five games from offense specifically Jaden Daniels. Then look at round one of the wild cards and what that offense put up versus round two of the wild cards and previous weeks Tampa by far gave them the stiffest defense in the last 4 to 6 weeks easy and somewhat had them figured out if we didn’t shoot our own selves in the foot sometimes s*** happens get over it. I still think this is a damn good team it was a fun season to watch the offense is stacked we just need to fix defensive talent over next year and watch the f*** out cuz here come the Buccaneers

  81. Bucben1961 Says:

Just another garbage pro Bowles propaganda piece…what a joke

  82. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

We (including Baker Mayfield) feels sooooo much better after reading this article.

    Zoocomics,

Checked team stats for Wash vs Tampa playoff game and there were 0 Wash punts. They also dominated come of possesion. Obviously couldn’t get them off the field. Biggest problem was clearly no EDGE pressure to keep Daniel’s from rolling out.

    Washington crushing Lions is hilarious.
Their QB is a choker, their defense sucks, fire the HC he can’t make adjustments.
    Any of this sound familiar?
Kinda sad though, Bucs could have beaten Lions and Eagles. So close, so very close…

In two playoff games the Commanders have punted ONCE.

With the score 31-28 the Commanders went on a 15 play TD drive that chewed up 8:28.

Last night was not a good night for believers in offensive geniuses. The Lions actually took the ball out of Goff’s hand and tried a trick pass play that resulted in an interception – an awful call.

We were closer obviously than the Lions were to beating DC. That f*cking fumble.

  87. Bucben1961 Says:

You can whitewash it all you want and blame Bakers (?) fumble for the bucs playoff lose but I know what I watched. Washington punted zero times…the bucs offense ran only 44 plays…even after the fumble and Washington td the bucs tied the score at 20 and again the defense couldn’t get off the field in the last almost 5 minutes in the game. You can scream all day long but I watched the game and I know what I saw…a defense that couldn’t get off the field to save its life but yeah let’s crap on Baker and Coen.. poor defensive scheme poor clock management poor situation management cost us the game but hey maybe I didn’t see what I saw

  88. Dubcity Says:

Then why make it about his race??

  92. Couch Fan Says:

Blaming Baker makes zero sense considering we still tied the game after the fricken fumble.

Comical these Bowels fanboy idiots are still blaming Baker when he still tied the game as if the defense didnt let Washington drive down the field run all the time off the clock and kick the winning FG. LMAO… Yes lets just ignore all that and blame Baker.

And I’m not even a Baker fan though he is growing on me. Common sense for the win!

The Bucs defense gave up 16 points last week.

Made a HUGE 4th quarter goal line stand and gave Baker the ball back with the chance to go up 2 scores and put the game away.

    Those are the facts.

As much as I hate saying it, Rod ain’t wrong here.

The bucs’ offense averaged 29.5 ppg thru the year and their defense gave up an average of 22.7 ppg (whic was greatly enhanced by their last 3 games of the season, btw).

The offense severely underperformed by almost 10 pts, while the defense performed on par. You all love to quote Einstein’s definition of insanity (…do the same thing, expect a different result…), so why the hypocrisy now. Defense did its thing and the offense FAILED to do its thing. If you have any beef with the loss, ANY, it has to lie with the offense.

  94. Pmike Says:

Baker lost the game for us. I like him a lot but you can’t argue that the game was locked up if we didn’t create turnovers and ran the clock out with a score.

Listen Bowles haters, I agree with you – when Bowles screws up it’s on him. But we need to hold that accountability for all. And that includes Baker and Coen.

See you guys next year with Coach SUPER BOWLES!!!

If Wash didn’t score, they chewed clock because they knew ONLY BUCS O could beat Bucs O, and that’s what happened with penalties, poor execution and costly TO…..and one poor play call choice

  96. Bucben1961 Says:

Chibuc….it’s hard to score when your opponent stays on the field for 15 16 17 play drives. The bucs defense couldn’t get off the field…period.

  97. Bucben1961 Says:

    Todd Bowles= Bill Bellichek…you just can’t make this up…lol

  98. ChiBuc Says:

I wholly agree the the bucs don’t even make the playoffs without Baker and Coen, but they punted the pooch vs the Commanders. They’re human and Coen is a rookie OC. He’ll learn from this and won’t try to get cute in the 4th qtr of a close playoff game next year. Shoot, I think Todd may have even learned something since calling that all out blitz vs Rams. Unfortunately, it’s made him a timid-can’t-get-beat-deep soft zone “guru.” But this loss vs the Commanders is on your wonder boy saviors.

  99. NYbucsfan Says:

Is this your attempt to give Todd bowles a pass?

  100. Dubcity Says:

I can, Bowles is doing better than him w/o Brady

  101. ChiBuc Says:

Buccaneer, TRUTH, but even harder when you turn the ball over and kick FGs instead of scoring TDs. We could say that the Offense didn’t do it’s job holding onto the ball to get more plays and give the D a break

  102. Dubcity Says:

Bowles haters continue to lose credibility

Fans only know 2 things, blame the coach or the QB

No it doesn’t. Not to anyone who watched our last game. Stop it Joe. You got hundreds of comments so you got whst you wanted. But you saw how bad our defense was. You saw those 10 play drives. You saw our lack of turnovers. Stop it! You almost made me go to PR. Stop it!

  105. Bucben1961 Says:

Sad thing is we will be having this very same argument next year…smh

  106. Dubcity Says:

Also, the fact that Jason Litch has said repeatedly this was a transition period (a rebuild) and Bowles has done better than expected given the salary cap and all the players they lost and are trying to replace,

But fans tell Litch they know more than him.. that makes the Bowles haters lose their credibility, they’re just looking for a place to pour all the hate they have in their hearts

  107. Bartow Buc Says:

This is very similar to 2001 when the great Tony Dungy had built a team that was right on the verge of winning it all. He was fired ( suddenly ) and replaced by John Gruden who took Dungy’s team and won the 2002 Super Bowl !! After the Super Bowl win the Bucs were never a contender until 2020 and 2021 with Tom Brady.
Of course Tony Dungy went on from Tampa to lead the Indianapolis Colts to win the Super Bowl in 2006 !!
Could Todd Bowles be another Tony Dungy in Tampa ? His record shows he deserves another chance to lead the Buccaneers in 2025 !! As Tony Dungy said it’s all about the leadership !!!

    Go Bucs 2025 !!

  108. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

Rod Quarterback Envy Munch, the only “fan” to continually run down a quarterback that is basically tied for second in the league and first in completion percentage and had a top 20 passer rating of all time in a playoff game of 146.5. What a complete and utter rube.

  109. Colonel Angus Says:

Quinn is coaching with some ballz. As Apollo Creed famously said “there is no tomorrow”. As DR pointed out, those 4th down conversions were huge in our game. Hopefully Bowles learns to be more aggressive when the situation calls for it.

  110. ChiBuc Says:

I feel you Bucben. I am NOT a Todd fan, go back and look, been call for his head since superbowl yr. He simply has too many gaps where his unit/team come out and play flat, he is poor at halftime adjustments (my biggest problem thru the yrs), only seems to have 1 game plan vs 31 teams, and let’s not even get into his executive clock mgmt. But this guy deserves credit for how he closes a season and his defense did enough, especially considering the player failures (e.g. Kancey winning on sacks, AWJ just standing in the middle of the field with his teeth in mouth on that TD pass, and even David missed a tackle or 2). Those long drives end if those guys make the play, not on Todd.

  111. miken Says:

They would have scored 37 on us if we turned the ball over 4 times.

  112. Couch Fan Says:

Wait wait. So your excuse for not holding the defense accountable is because we already knew they were bad. LMAO. So the offense has to be perfect or its all their fault is what you are saying?

This just gets more dumb by the minute.

  113. RVATom Says:

The super frustrating thing for me in our loss was the sloppiness. Washington made few mistakes and recovered from the ones they did make. That’s on Bucs coaches. And Todd is where the Buc stops. Historically…this team seems to come out lackadaisical and to the eye…not horribly crisp. It usually gets better.

With regard to the Defense I have to agree that looking at the Lions/Commandos it certainly seems that Bowles did more with less. The Lions had a lot of injuries but they could not stop the run like Blowles’ scheme. It gave me a greater appreciation for Bowles. I didn’t expect that. Is it an apples to apples? No…and the repeated gashing of our Defense this season behind the line backers was just as frustrating as all hell. But… I definitely can appreciate that Bowles system had some good points.

  114. stpetebucsfan Says:

The game against the Commanders was NOT all locked up when Baker fumbled.

If the Bucs went three and out how much time would Daniels have had? Way more than he needed!

IF the Bucs had simply plowed Bucky into the D when that’s the play they’re looking for how awesome would the OL have to play to get a first down. If Bucky fumbles, he has before, would the loss all be on his back?

Why must you guys obsess on the negative. It was a GREAT game between two evenly matched teams, with two Heisman trophy winning QB’s at the top of their games. Yes the fumble was huge, it was the only TO of the game!

How about the single play where the oblong ball bounces left instead of right sending the game into overtime. Clearly the Bucs literally did not get the bounces.

How about officiating? Overall not that bad IMHO some questionable calls but the biggest mistake may have been the non call of offsides. Barton sees a guy across the line of scrimmage and immediately snaps the ball to get the five yards and a free play. Alas the official did not call it and it was a very important busted play timing wise for the Bucs.

  115. Aaron Says:

Bowles the defensive coordinator chose to play Washington conservatively – mostly due to the personnel he had to work with… unfortunately, Bowles the Head Coach also played Washington conservatively…I would’ve like to have seen the Bucs take the 3points off the board and go for it on 4th and 2 on our 1st drive and go for the 1st down on our last possession, but that’s not how Bowles works. His defensive approach put max pressure on the offense to produce.

Monday morning quarter backing, looking at that game from the 30,000ft view, I think it was a good approach. He needed a game plan that included training wheels for his D to keep the game close enough for his Offense to win the game. Besides his conservative approach to take the 2 field goals – if not for 2 unfortunate unforced errors – this approach probably wins the game.

Dan Campbell chose to play Washington aggressively. That’s just who he is…doesn’t matter the personnel. Obviously you can’t turn the ball over 5x – but again, looking at that game from the 30k ft, Detroit blitzed and got burned over and over with ridiculous accurate passing. Who knows if Detroit could have won without the turnovers – some of those interceptions were fantastic.

I don’t like it – just like other Bucs and Lions fans don’t either, but sometimes we got to remember the other team gets paid too and all you can do is tip your hat and say good game.

    GO Bucs!!!!

  118. Pewter Power Says:

Bowles is trash and his defense is trash! All the comments here shows opinions on both sides of the ball I’m not sure how a guy could just sit there and do nothing but wait until the other team gets the ball back just to struggle to give it back to his team again and no fire and fury at halftime to rally your team they sleepy through the game like expected. It just can’t be possible that Bowles is watching the game from the sidelines and has no opinion until he goes to the podium. Useless head coach getting all this credit for what others have done and for Coen just because he did the interview in the offseason. He didn’t create that locker room unity and there are very few times in the nfl teams quit on a head coach. A majority of fans are never going to like Bowles and for good reason so get used to it. Coaches and players come and go. We’ll have to deal with him until they realize they’ve wasted another year by keeping him

You Joe’s are in complete denial… Last I checked Washington didn’t punt against Tampa, dominated TOP and ran 69 plays to our 44 and could NOT get off field the entire game. Your defensive guru had no right answers to the test. Like i said I would swap Campbell for Bowles in a second.

  126. Mike C Says:

EI HEFE, people still don’t forgive Todd for the Rams game, and he makes ALOT of mistakes when it comes to time management. The NFL stands for Not For Long. Every one is on the hot seat smh put the race card away, I mean shouldn’t the league be 60% white if we are engineering fairness. Almost no Asian playes and very few Latino, if race is such a big factor for Africa Americans why are they the majority 🤔??? Ohhh yeah because no one cares what anyone’s race is as long as you WIN! Gtfoh

  127. ChiBuc Says:

^^you want to see a stupid argument? Just look at that race proportion rationale? Amazingly, the bottom line is accurate. Perform and in, fail and out, but the breakdown as to group representation is absurd. But EI HEFE did not address the league, he addressed the illogical hatred posted here by the pitchfork “we hate Bowles club.” The club that can see no fault in Coen’s playcalling and blames Bowles for Barton’s premature snap. Like or dislike, but the lack of objectivity is ridiculous

  128. Mike Johnson Says:

Defensive Guru? Come on Joe, Give me a break. You are nowhere near Guru status When that Washington game was quite winnable with a few adjustments. A loss is a loss. A Defensive Guru would not be in the league’s top 10 worst Defenses. And we are there. And that is a FACT.

  129. El HEFE Says:

Mike c be real man Todd got hired in a situation with Tom Brady already leaving had to find a new coordinator 2 times a new qb fix the line that was super trash because Jensen got hurt that’s the first season that didn’t mention the dumpster diving we had to do for the last 2 years now that we are actually working our way out of cap hell and putting shit together fans want to run him out of town be real I won’t leave the race card out the reason more blacks are in the league is because that’s what they worked to get to a lot of u here the story behind their come up it’s tragic think of mikes story think of bucky’s story they had hard life’s that pushed them to get this far I just want people to look at it plain and simple lions got beat worse doesn’t matter we were close they weren’t that’s facts a loss is a loss at the end we were closer and Todd did this hurt players to so what’s the real difference

  130. Defense Rules Says:

Deuceswild78 … ‘we had basically our opening day defense and could not get off the field’.

Actually our starting defense in the playoff game had FIVE different starters than in the opening day game against Washington.

And the reason our defense couldn’t get off the field is more complex than you implied. We did an excellent job of shutting down the Commanders’ run game … 33 rushes for only 82 yards (2.5 YPC average). Unfortunately we screwed the pooch when it came to 3rd & 4th down conversions (Washington was 11-of-20 … 8-of-15 on 3rd down conversions and 3-of-5 on 4th down conversions).

Bucs’ offense in comparison was only 5-of-9 on 3rd & 4th down conversions. BIG differential (especially letting them convert 3-of-5 on the 4th down conversions because that kept TWO drives alive that they scored TWO TDs on). Bucs’ offense only had 7 drives (season low) & 44 plays (season low), largely because our run game was ‘just OK’ (25 rushes for 101 yards … 4.0 YPC).

Game plan/playcalling was questionable IMO because we ran on 57% of our plays (too high considering that Baker completed 15-of-18 (83.3%) and we could’ve had Washington on the ropes if we’d passed more). Also, kicking a FG on 4th-and-3 from the 14-yard-line with 4:45 left in the game frustrated me, especially considering that we had 2nd-and-1 then 3rd-and-1 from the 12-yard-line and crapped the bed. Play-calling on THAT series left a LOT to be desired. Had we scored a TD on that drive instead of a FG, that game was ours.

  131. El HEFE Says:

I’m blocked again I guess me and Mike c cant get our thoughts out to each other without being sensored

  132. Aqualung Says:

Todd Bowles is a life coach guru to NFL players, an almost pathologically smart man and pretty obviously a great dude. The fact that his players love him and love playing for him is great evidence as to why he should retain his head coaching job.

Now. He is not a defensive guru. The data speak for themselves.

He has never had the chance to be a full time head coach because he’s always had another full time job. Defensive Coordinator. Sorry, in the competitive NFL, that is a competitive weakness. He’s doing two jobs at less than best performance level because it’s simply too much to do. Hiring a full time Defensive Coordinator would allow Bowles for the first time to focus on all the important details of being a head coach and running the team.

This is and has been my position. That isn’t a hater’s position.
And it’s ludicrous to brand those who criticize Bowles as “haters.” It is a sign of the snowflake generation though, that people don’t tolerate criticism.

Medication and therapy are two options for them.

  133. Buckybucs Says:

Over 300yds by both teams in the first half does make Bucs defense look better and offense look a bit worse. Yes Lions turned the ball over 5 times but 2 were in 1st half. Take the pick 6 off and Wash still had 17 it’s in the first half. Detroit had almost more pts by half than Bucs entire game. Needed to run Bucky and actually use Tucker and could have won.

Wait wait. So your excuse for not holding the defense accountable is because we already knew they were bad. LMAO. So the offense has to be perfect or its all their fault is what you are saying?

This just gets more dumb by the minute.

Everyone knew AND stated before the game that the offense needed to score 30+ and control the clock to win the game. They did neither.. We all knew the ENTIRE season that the D was weak and the bucs would win or lose based on the offensive performance. It’s OK, sometimes other teams beat you, sometimes you have an off day and beat yourself, but to continue to rail about that defensive performance smacks of any legitimate objectivity.

What’s dumb is to rant on and on, never listening to anything or anyone other than your own opinion. You can always tell who the dumbest person in the room is, because they are usually loud, insulting, and never shut up.

  135. John Says:

Not a guru. He has called a few good games but overall when the game is on the line, do you trust a Todd balls defense to save or win the game? The talk is that players love to play for this guy. Simply because players like playing for the guy does not automatically transform into the dude being some defensive genius or guru. Seemingly, since he has such a smooth even temperament ownership management and players have his back. If that is the case keep the man as your head coach yet hire a defensive coordinator to help take some of the burden off of coaches shoulders. We complain about clock management and game management. Those things can be taught providing that the teach-ee is teachable….. Like so many successful teams and organizations over the years, keep your head coach just provide him with a DC… Thanks again

  136. El HEFE Says:

Aqualung probably the only mf that has something above his shoulder besides hair pointing out actual facts instead of a theory that makes no sense

  137. Joe in Michigan Says:

The problem with the “Bowles is a genius” theory is that we watch the games and see Bowles regularly get outcoached by the Sean Payton’s and Sean McVay’s of the NFL. What is the Bill Parcells line about “You are what your record is”? I don’t think 28-27 with the Bucs (and much worse with the Jets) will earn anyone “genius” status. The whole “well, this team beat that team by so many points, so my team did better” in a LOSS is nonsense.

I’m on here cos I’m another Buc fan who is disappointed by the Lions’ loss. Washington…snort. The Bucs beat BOTH them and the Lions when all three clubs were HEALTHY at the start of the season. Plus, the Bucs were breaking in another OC. If Coen has legitimate gray matter between his ears, he’ll hang out here for another season. His play calling stunk in the first half of last week’s loss. Reminded me of Leftwich and Canales with the run-up-the-middle crap when the entire opposite D knew it was coming. Still, it took a lucky fumble plus a still banged up Bucs team to help DC squeeze out a victory. Licht and Bowles will be concentrating on D in the off-season. I sure hope Godwin comes back. Todd Bowles, as a defensive guru and head coach, has a record against rookie quarterbacks. According to the available information, he has faced 13 rookie quarterbacks and has a 3-10 combined record against them.

If ur reading you watched all the playoff games. Hopefully Bowles was watching. This is a new NFL. All the other 31 teams play to play 4 downs not punt when it’s fourth and two. When u sit back and watch the other teams converting on 60, 70 percent or in the 90s like Washington and Detroit, Buffalo and Kansas City… If your defense can’t get off the field, keep your offense on the field. I doubt I was the only one that noticed so many teams this season time and time again, teams do this to us …i cant remember ever seeing so much of the 4 down play going for it..I’m not a coach, I’m just saying w my team the Bucs, we were victimized and plagued by this throughout the season time and time again..last week was a prime example. The foreskins went for it 5 times converting 3. We stopped them twice, once in the red zone. But 2 for 2 on their last drive. you got a top five run game, pass game, you better get w the times.. duel threat qb make these conversions alot more manageable…mayfield is no exception. we had opportunities in every game that we lost to do so..to extend the drives.and if you look back we only lost one game by more than one possesion…moving forward I hope bowles figured that out after this season..and does what every other coach figured out. If you dont get it , you dont get it…our defense might stop you. But how many times did teams do this to us? Every game we lost i guarentee you we got victimized at least twice , so why dont WE PLAY KEEPAWAY?I know he old school. This is a new era w the mobile qbs and when u have the pieces we have on offense you HAVE to maximize their opportunities if you wanna score points. I can’t tell u how many times that happened to us all year where teams go for it on 4 down, convert and sustain those drives go down the field and score and we get inside our 30 and on 4 th and 2 w a top 5 everything and an executive offensive guru… we sent the kicker out 19 out of 20 times and end up losing those games. Last week no exception. I just hated that all season. Does anyone else feel the same way? Get w the time Todd..u holding us back w questionable decisions and common sense. You making my team defense look soft. And you aren’t optimizing our potential…do you have faith in our offense on 4 th and 2 ? Or did you want our defense that’s been on the field for 45 min on the field defending that 4th and 2 ? I d k bout you, but I’m gonna take my chance w the offense WE GOT. Come on man…go Bucs…Read this Todd . It’s snowing where I am but I won’t hesitate to drive wherever and try to point this out to Bowles..

“Baker, Donald, Goff — all reject QBs, all choked big time in the playoffs”

That can be said of all QBs.

Can’t compare games of other teams. Yeah a defensive genius who couldn’t make the other team punt once. And lost. What. A . Genius! Dan Quinn almost single handedly gave the game to bowles. But bowles is a step below so he said no thanks. Get over it
