Todd Bowles History With Jake Peetz
January 24th, 2025So regular readers here read multiple stories the past few days quoting Jaguars radio play-by-play man Frank Frangie, the top afternoon radio host in Jacksonville.
Frangie’s intel proved to be on the money about the Liam Coen mess, which led to Coen leaving the Bucs to take the Jaguars head coaching job yesterday. Frangie was ahead of the reporting curve.
No surprise.
Frangie was getting his info directly from the team.
Joe listened to hours of Frangie’s show (1010 XL) to find nuggets to share with Bucs fans.
One nugget was Frangie stating that Jake Peetz, the Seahawks’ passing game coordinator, was the Bucs’ next choice behind Liam Coen to be Tampa Bay’s offensive coordinator last year after Dave Canales left for Carolina.
Frangie made it clear on the air that he is a friend of Peetz, even saying Peetz is Coen’s first choice to join him Jacksonville as offensive coordiantor.
Peetz was a Jaguars scout for several years as a scout before coaching there and moving on to Coach at Alabama and at other NFL stops. He also called plays for LSU in 2021 before heading to the Rams for two seasons, where he worked with Coen.
So if Bowles indeed was prepared to hire Peetz a year ago, Joe presumes that came with Baker Mayfield’s blessing.
And Peetz was with the Rams as Sean McVay assistant when Mayfield was there.
Would Bowles be eager to hire Coen clone at offensive coordinator to try and keep the most possible continuity for Mayfield’s playbook?

I still have no idea why ANYONE on this site or at OneBuc HQ would be mad Coen left.
It’s called “negotiations”
Yall, be real…..if someone else offered you a better deal both professionally and financially in your career field….you all would take it.
Coen doesn’t owe anything to the Bucs other than his services…..that’s it.
January 24th, 2025 at 12:41 pm
From Peetz perspective, if he gets offer from both Coen and Bowels, the likely choice told Coen and Jags ..
Bowels starting out on the hot seat does scream stability but Coen likely get a few years to prove himself…
Baker is a good QB but NFL tries to make Lawrence out to be one too…
January 24th, 2025 at 12:41 pm
Here’s something else to think about:
In two straight seasons….both offensive coordinators left the Bucs…..is there a hidden message in concerns to “chaos” within the Bucs organization??????
Think about them apples for a second.
January 24th, 2025 at 12:42 pm
He accepted the Bucs offer though then sneaked off to do a deal behind their back. Just man up and say you are talking to the Jags and may take the job due to it being a promotion and more money.
No Class
January 24th, 2025 at 12:42 pm
Yea but he did it the coward way he could have been more straight forward like canales when he left period. Liam has no integrity and has been like a ping pong ball on his resume as of the last few years.
January 24th, 2025 at 12:42 pm
I would not hire anyone that is friends with Coen. Birds of a feather flock together.
January 24th, 2025 at 12:44 pm
I’m not mad he took the deal. But it is a scumb** move to say one thing, lie about it, and then leave. Just be a man and say you’re leaving in the first place. GG
January 24th, 2025 at 12:48 pm
I think we should be talking about Baker Mayfield & Co. handing out lottery tickets to offensive coordinators. Bring in Chucky or bring in Pee Wee Herman (RIP) this offense is going to score points.

I agree!
I honestly do not understand all this gripping! This time last season people were debating who made whom’s career…Baker or Canales. I’ve always thought it was Canales who benefitted from Baker.
There is some of that with LC, toss in Bucky and a significantly improved OL and again…players play, coaches coach. the players are always the most important.
I get that a bad coach can waste good players but I’ve never really seen a good coach succeed with bad players.
Let’s begin to move to some OPTIMISM can we? Ditch those other 80% of your inclinations. Sh!t can always happen, as in Baker goes down, who is the backup.
I maintain if Trask leaves finding a backup QB will be almost as important as the next OC. The next OC doesn’t need to improve anything other than perhaps stopping the stupid drive killing penalties. The batter for the cake is still the same and HUGE number of NFL guys have enough talent to bake it. Yep pun intended!
Celebrate. He’s not going to N.O. The decision leaves the Bucs plenty of time to fix the situation. Right now for Bucs fans it’s STILL ALL GOOD!!!

@The BucsAnthem,
Nobody is pissed about him chasing the bag. It’s about the sleazy way it transpired. Catch up homie.
January 24th, 2025 at 12:51 pm
I have no idea why there are a hardened group of posters who do not understand the difference between WHAT happened, and HOW it happened.
For the 1,000th time, interviewing with another team is fine. Taking the HC role somewhere else is fine. Making huge $ is fine. But be up front about it – don’t be a low integrity dirt bag. Said he’d be at OBP in the morning, and then wasn’t. Ghosted the Bucs Front Office. Called from Jacksonville saying he wanted to travel to Jax for interviews. Called Bowles with a story about being with his sick kid.
Better off without him.
January 24th, 2025 at 12:56 pm
If you want to be a HC then the choice is to come here,,, Picking the jags over us is funny ,,, even if Liam gets that offense going they are the third best team in division ,, Houston, Indy(yes Indy) and Titans should improve if they land a QB,,,,
We are going to battle Atlanta again for division,,,,and for those that say we only win cuz division stinks ,, remember Patriots won 17 divisions in a row w crappy Bills (at the time) , Dolphins (anyone remember who their QBs were then) and Jets lol,,, (((( drop the microphone ))))
January 24th, 2025 at 12:57 pm
Rinse, dry, repeat….this seems like a move from last years playbook on coordinator selection. I would stay away from anyone in the McVay coaching tree because obviously they are opportunistic individuals that have no intention other than to build their resumes and then move on. Canales..one and done… Cohen…one and done…so let’s not continue this cycle of expendable OC’s for the sake of keep our QB in a system that he’s comfortable in, because eventually it is going to crash and burn. Find an OC who is looking to remain in place for a while, because they do exist!
January 24th, 2025 at 1:07 pm
Patriots also won 6 super bowls. I’m sure that doesnt mean anything though about how good they actually were compared to our multiple 1 and dones.
January 24th, 2025 at 1:11 pm
I’m only concerned with who will be the next OC. The lectures from you know it alls is well past stale. We get your point.
January 24th, 2025 at 1:19 pm
Well, if Peetz takes a job with Coen for the Jaguars, he is not apt to be calling plays as we all know that will be Liam Coen doing that. I would think our opportunity at offensive coordinator would be much more appealing.
January 24th, 2025 at 1:22 pm
Here’s the rub Anthem. It’s not like Coen was/is an established OC before Bowles/Bucs gave him an opportunity. He bounced back and forth between a mid (at best) college and Sean’s do boy, basically an apprenticeship until given a big boy NFL job. You are absolutely correct the he doesn’t owe anything legally, but morally? He could have told the bucs a tentative yes, he could have been forth coming. Instead, he actually played both sides by 1. Publicly accepting the bucs’ offer and 2. Breaching that deal by sneaking around (literally within 24 of saying yes). It’s like having an affair on your wedding night. With that said, do you want to go to war with the guy? Baker vouched for him, Todd advocated for him, and the Glazers ponied up to show appreciation for him, you don’t then turn around aflip those individuals off for $$. Well, maybe you and Liam do
January 24th, 2025 at 1:30 pm
Take it away Thaddeus.
January 24th, 2025 at 1:32 pm
You guys act like you would handle it differently. Remember we are getting 2nd hand info. There is 3 sides to every story. Go BUCS!!!!
January 24th, 2025 at 1:35 pm
I don’t have connections to anyone, but it wasn’t hard to piece what was going to happen together when the Bucs claim Coen signed a new deal (which wasn’t true) and then the Jags, almost immediately, announce they fired their GM. I literally said in the thread where it was announced that he was returning, that the Jags firing their GM almost certainly means they’re going to take another run at Coen. It doesn’t take any insider knowledge to know that, it’s just common sense. The GM, by all accounts, was holding up any deal – so once he was removed, there wasn’t anything holding up the deal.
I wish the Bucs would have kept Coen. I’d have absolutely fired Bowles to keep Coen. But it’s also not that easy, Coen might not have wanted the Bucs job if it meant stabbing Bowles in the back – and the Bucs would still have to had dealt with the Rooney Rule nonsense which means Coen couldn’t have signed a deal and someone could still come in and grab him before the Bucs could act.
Coen did a great job, that’s why the Jagoffs wanted him. It’s a credit to Bowles to pick two OC’s in a row that got HC gigs after just a year. People angry and upset are just being a bunch of hens, clucking just to hear themselves cluck.
January 24th, 2025 at 1:35 pm
IF we are competing for Peetz one thing to remember is that Coen will retain play calling duties. He talked last year about really enjoying that part of the job. If Peetz wants that job, then he would likely prefer Tampa.
January 24th, 2025 at 1:42 pm
If Peetz is offered the OC job here, and J Ville 100 percent he comes here. Coen may be his buddy, but Peetz would not be the play caller for the Jags. He’d be in Coen’s shadow the way McVays assts are under him. Like no one cares who the OC is for the Chiefs, it’s Reeds show. Peetz coming here would be his quickest way to his own HC gig, not Jacs. All the better if we keep Peetz from Coen.
January 24th, 2025 at 1:48 pm
Big difference between last year and this year. Bucs we’re in the last year of the non-rebuild rebuild from Brady runs. Organization is expecting to make a deep run next year. I don’t think they’ll want the next young OC who will head out the following year if successful. I think it’s a successful older guy: McCarthy, Chucky or recent retread like Waldron or Kubiak (assuming saints cut him loose).
January 24th, 2025 at 2:11 pm
Why is anyone surprised he would leave after 1 year when you look at his recent trend? 2020 he left the Rams for Kentucky. After a year he left Kentucky and went back to Rams. After that year he left the Rams and went back to Kentucky. After that year he left Kentucky and came to Bucs. After a year he leaves the Bucs. SURPRISE!!
Yeah we are pissed off at how all this played out, but do give him credit for the balanced offense he brought to the Bucs.
January 24th, 2025 at 2:16 pm
The Bucs need to put up a help wanted sign. “Help Wanted”, offensive coordinator needed to run a top five NFL offense. Experience required and excellent promotion opportunities, the last two guys were here one year and got Head coaching gigs. They should be getting their door beaten down by prospective O.C’s
January 24th, 2025 at 6:08 pm
Good article. I missed reading this earlier. My money was on Mike Lafleur, Wes Phillips or Aubrey Pleasant. All non-play calling OCs or passing game coordinators that want to call plays. But probably should definitely include Jake Peetz. My only concerns with Jake is his lack of run production. He is more like Canales with low run production then Coen better complimentary offense. I would list him 4th behind the other 3.
January 24th, 2025 at 7:24 pm
No one cares that he left it’s how the man did just say I want to explore my options just In case nobody would be mad about that but to ghost the team like mf don’t at least deserve to know they need to find someone asap and to text the team like can’t wait to be back on the field with y’all what type of psycho does that
January 24th, 2025 at 8:34 pm
With all due respect, once you have an agreement in principle, and have made a “commitment” even just verbally, negotions should be done. Don’t say yes until you’re ready to honor that. He could have said I’m not sure yet or I need more time BUT according to the “reports” he said yes, I agree, I’m staying and then pulled some high school sneaky shlt.
No integrity. Better off without the bum.
January 25th, 2025 at 10:09 am
Probably would have to consider Peetz will be the OC for the Jaguars based on his history with Coen… I would be nice to have him but think about this he comes picks up the offense and carries it forward how Coen did and boom he’s off to another team after one year he’s young and part of this west coast tree all the teams are chasing. I say lets get Chip Kelly one of the best running offenses while in NFL at Eagles UCLA each year offense got better with Kelly and National Championship with Ohio State this year. He’s 61 and would probably not be high on radar to be scalped by another NFL team after 1 year as OC for the Bucs. we need some stability at OC we’ll not have some of our top players much longer and soon we’ll get picked apart with contract renewals for them we can’t afford and have to move on, so lets go after Chip Kelly we got the offense that would work very good with his style of play calling.
January 25th, 2025 at 10:52 am
Bucs Anthem said think about chaos? Seriously are you that daft? Last two Bucs OC’s picked by Bowles had excellent track records with the team and therefore got noticed for other gigs. Internal chaos? More like Todd Bowles is an excellent judge of football talent, you muppet.
January 25th, 2025 at 12:54 pm
Even Byron Leftwich could thrive as OC with this team’s OL, QB, RBs, & WRs.
When Lefty imploded it was Brady’s losing year, the Bucs had lost their All-Pro C to injury, an All-Pro Guard to retirement, their 3rd WR (Antonio Brown walked off), and had an immobile QB (Tom Brady) who was never a threat to run. The RB room featured a fat, washed-up playoff Lenny and not much else.
