The Saints And Liam Coen

January 1st, 2025

Joe has yet to receive word that Liam Coen has received or accepted a Team Glazer offer he can’t refuse to continue calling plays for the Bucs next season.

Hopefully, that good news arrives next week.

Yes, Coen is under contract as Bucs offensive coordinator for next season, but there’s legitmate fear he may leave the building for a head coaching gig.

It has a lot to do with the Bucs’ high-octane, highly-diverse and high-achieving offense.

A 39-year-old from the famed Sean McVay coaching tree, Coen is a hot name as interview season approaches. And what 39-year-old Kevin O’Connell has done in Minnesota has to be fanning those flames. O’Connell worked alongside Coen with the Rams.

So that brings Joe to the slimy Saints.

The Saints have a quality general manager, stable ownership and they already fired their defense-first head coach of the last three seasons (2022-2024). It’s a safe bet New Orleans has its eye on a young offensive mind or two for its vacancy.

Might that be Coen?

And is Coen showcasing himself Sunday for Saints management in the Bucs’ must-win game against the Saints in Tampa?

Joe thinks the Saints gig could be attractive to Coen from the standpoint of stability, as the Saints have been patient with head coaches.

The Saints are in an absolute salary cap mess that won’t be fixed for a couple of years, and they’re probably stuck with QB Derek Carr for one more season, but the Saints’ heirarchy seems like one that would be realistic about its rebuild mode and would let Coen operate accordingly.

Joe likes Coen and has no interest in him landing in New Orleans, but Joe does think it’s certainly a sleeper Coen landing spot.

We need to keep Coen no matter what. We can easily replace Bowles. We cannot easily replace Liam. Please do the right thing Glazer family!

  2. Cometowin2 Says:

Going to the Saints would doom us for years!

  3. Slacker Says:

Plain and simple….you don’t let him leave the building. He is the most important signing of the off season. Go all in on the defense and this team is a major contender.

The Bucs certainly have patient with Bowles. Bowles didn’t have to build anything. It was gifted to him.

  5. Dom Says:

Saints are an old team in salary cap hell. They won’t be good for at least a couple more years

  6. BallHawk75 Says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if Coen goes elsewhere to escape the Bowles black hole.

With a top 3 offense we’re one loss away from missing the playoffs.

Why waste a brilliant offensive mind getting undercut by a clueless HC.

You know the Saints will be prepared for this game.

Throw out the record. Forget the previous game against them.

These games can get tough right away.

  7. Durango 95 Says:

I can’t think of a worse scenario than Coen going to a division rival and this team being left with a coach that can barely post a 50% winning avg. Although Coen leaving to go to any other team is pretty much equally as bad. The only reason this team has ANY chance of going to the playoffs is because of the work Coen has done with Baker and this offense. I surely hope the Glazer family can grasp the importance of this situation. It could have long lasting effects on this franchise for many years to come. This no time for measured moves.

  8. BakerFan Says:

Yeah sure the Saints will be ready for another azzwhomping and Mike gets his candy too. What has changed for the Saints since the last time the Bucs played them? They only got worse.

  9. Statistically Insignificant Reader Says:

Would be interesting to see how the Bucs players respond with the stability of not having to deal with installing ANOTHER offensive coordinator.

  10. Citrus County Says:

I don’t think the Glazers have much of a choice. It would be a public relations nightmare for Coen to go elsewhere.

  11. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Recent speculation has suggested that San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan might be traded to another team this offseason, similar to how Sean Payton transitioned from the New Orleans Saints. However, both Shanahan and 49ers general manager John Lynch have publicly dismissed these rumors, expressing their commitment to the organization.

If such a move were to occur, potential candidates to fill the head coaching position could include Liam Coen. Coen’s offensive creativity has garnered attention, and his familiarity with Shanahan’s systems could make him a suitable successor.

Additionally, Miami’s head coach Mike McDaniel, who previously served as the 49ers’ offensive coordinator under Shanahan, could be considered as Liam’s replacement in Tampa.

  12. Anyhony Says:

Offer Bowles the president of operations (promotion) offer Coen head coach. Bucs save face, Bowles makes more money! We all win!

  13. BuxfaninTX Says:

If this happened then the entire NFC South will be helmed by ex Buc coaches

  14. GoneGator Says:

If he leaves he leaves… Not worrying about it.

I hope he takes the Ben Johnson path. He has unfinished business here. He should want to run it back – unless we win the SB this year

I love the guy and think VERY highly of him as an OC but he’s not irreplaceable in spite of what some of you seem to think.

Honestly, I think he’d be a fool to leave for a HC position at this point. I think the man understands continuity, familiarity, time on task, etc and how much better THIS offense could be with another off season and season to work together. He should want to leave only if he gets the perfect offer, not jump at the 1st chance.

He has A LOT of weapons here! The offense is still growing, adapting, gelling and the sky’s the limit if he stays…..he’s got to know that.

  15. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Liam Coen’s parents lives here in Florida and I’m sure he’d love to remain close to them which bodes well as an incentive to stay here.

If I were the Glazers, I’d make Coen the highest paid offensive coordinator in the league and also offer him incentives as well.

Todd Bowles is a good guy and I like him alot, but just not as HC. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Glazers don’t try to make a change regardless of where the Bucs finish this season. The only chance I see Bowles staying if they miraculously make it to the NFC Championship game.

  16. ocala Says:

Bucs would be incredibly dumb to let Liam Coen leave. Liam Coen needs to be the Bucs next head coach.

I don’t rule out a Bucs loss on Sunday at all, and a Falcons win… so if the Bucs miss the playoffs at 9-8, and lose the division… with a top 3 offense and a 21st ranked defense run by the head coach… makes you wonder what they might do.

2 different topics bro. You’re talking history, I’m talking about now and the future. And I can’t tell you who would be better – Liam’s fantastic – but I don’t buy into the hero worship some people around here do. You’d think that Liam Baker, Mike, and Bucky could win an SB by themselves.

  25. LUVMYBUCS Says:

If Liam Coen decides to leave Tampa for a head coaching opportunity in college or the pros, I wish him nothing but success. This isn’t the end of the world—there are plenty of talented candidates out there. Remember, the same concerns arose last year when Dave Canales left, and things worked out just fine. The core group of offensive talent remains strong, and with Coach Bowles’s proven ability to identify and hire promising, young play-callers, there will be no shortage of qualified suitors eager to replicate that success.

    Go Bucs!

  26. Jmarkbuc Says:

Way too sensible. Hope you are right. The Bowles Busters aren’t going to be happy, but Coach Todd isn’t going anywhere when team finishes 10-7. Next year with defense improved, 12-5 very possible. If that happens, the angry masses here will miss “good old Coach Bowles” when he gracefully steps aside for Coen.

I know we need to draft D first 2-3 rounds, but if we lose Tucker or White, we need to draft this cat. Hes predicted as a 4th right now. Just imagine a Bucky but with about 25 more pounds….man would that be a two-headed monster lol.

No matter how our season ends and whether or not Bowles is still head coach we need to do everything we can to keep him in the fold. 51. drdneastup Says:

I used to think Mikey Loomis was an excellent GM but over the past few years I have changed my opinion to just good. The Saints have been playing in salary cap hell for the past few years which has prevented them from being more than a .500 team or worse. He is still a pretty good talent evaluator but when it comes to controlling the salary of the players on the team he has been a dismal failures as the Saints haven’t been back to the Super Bowl iv over 10 years. Not only that he signed Doug Winston to a contract which was a total bonehead move for the price he paid someone who was and is an interception machine.

I will say what i said last season about Canales.
I get that these guys have a dream and want to be Head Coaches, i get they want to strike when the iron is hot but in the long term is better to wait for the right opportunity.
Carolina job was not a good situation because of ownership and draft capital.
New Orleans job is even worse with salary cap hell and a bad roster.
I think is better to find a job when you are in a position to succeed.
I will understand it however if Coen leaves just like Canales.
A big offer so Coen can stay is worth a shot.

  55. Pmike Says:

Kinda stacked year for HC candidates, Coen has value but maybe not his year to hit the market. I’d rather come onto the market when my values the highest….

  56. Steve Says:

If we win the division, it will be thanks to Cohen, not Bowles. So we shouldn’t get into the trap of keeping Bowles just because we would win the division. We should have a much better record if it wasn’t for Bowles, bus defense and game management. So there’s a clear justification to replace Bowles with Cohen.

  57. RustyRhinos Says:

When the Bucs were looking for 2024’s OC, and hired Coen, what was Coen’s remark about Baker being a FA? “I wanted to be the BUCS OC, and getting Baker was the cherry on top.”

Coen wanted to be the BUCS OC. Without or with Baker and Evans… I think Coen has found a home in Tampa Bay. He got his dream fulfilled here, not LA McVey is their OC/HC, KY twice as OC.. Tampa gave him his opportunity, and Coen has had to work against Bowles while in LA. Maybe Coen knows how difficult that is, more so than the JBF GMs? Maybe Coen has spoken with Bowles about the time he wants to be HC, Perhaps, (my best Dell guy voice) they both want to continue Ariens’ plan of succession from within?

Hopefully, Coens has not yet found he has the skillset or coaches in his ranks to be ready for HC duties, and allow another OC to run his gameplan.

    GO!!!!! BUCS!!!!!

  58. orlbucfan Says:

Can the Tampa Bay Bucs have some coaching stability for the next season at least? Yeah, Todd Bowles is a real dumbo. He brought both Coen and Baker here. We really have some first-class retards on this site! Go Bucs Sunday!

  67. Rod Munch Says:

I’d make Coen the head coach before I’d let him leave. Nothing against Bowles, but the team is winning because of the offense, and in spite of the defense.

At the same time I would not want Coen as the head coach, as he’s really really good as the OC, and the last thing I’d want is to remove him from that position.

  68. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

Don’t we have enough to worry about getting through this Sunday’s game against the Saints without speculating on this nightmare scenario? This nails exactly how I feel.

As a last resort, I would make him HC…but I prefer to keep him at OC another year at least. Maybe a promotion to Asst HC and a raise would work.

So far as Bowles, I’m good with keeping him if it happens. I DO believe he is a great Defensive Head Coach…but I also want a DC put on staff.

In order to support Baker Mayfield, the drafting for the past couple years has focused on offense.

We can now focus on building a good defense. Secondary and pass rushing, and this team will be top of the league.

  73. BucU Says:

“”With a top 3 offense we’re one loss away from missing the playoffs.””

  74. Orange Republic Says:

Coen’s offenses have practiced against the two of the NFC South defenses every week for years. He knows Raheem’s Rams and Todd’s Bucs D very well. He would be a very savvy choice for Saints.

  75. MelvinJunior Says:

I wasn’t worried about Canales leaving, in the least. The only reason he got that job was because he was the only one willing to take it (and I didn’t blame him for it one bit). The only thing that p’ed me off was the STUPID NFL Rule that cost us a 3rd-Round Comp. Pick. 2-YEARS!? Stupid. 2-years, or 1-year… What difference does it make. Actually, it makes much more sense with it being 1-year, if you had to pick. It should’ve been ‘WITHIN’ the first 2-years!!!! The Bucs FO should’ve at least tried petitioning the league. Prob wouldn’t have worked, but whatever. A STUPID RULE.

  76. KitGabriel Says:

Coen in the Big Easy would be a hard pill to swallow and one that could haunt us for a very long time. And if that did happen, how bizarre it would be for all three of our division rivals to have hired former Bucs coaches to lead their franchises.

Even with Morris taking the long route to ATL, has that ever happened in any other division in NFL football? It would be worst kind of compliment to the Bucs organization.
