Soft Zone Polishes Off Season

January 12th, 2025

 Todd Bowles

Why do opposing receivers often frolic through the Bucs defense like deer in corn fields?

Commanders QB Jayden Daniels completed a tick under 69 percent of his passes tonight. And Joe would wager that nobody attending in The Licht House was surprised.

The Bucs ranked in the bottom third of the NFL this season when it comes to allowing opposing QBs to complete passes. They converted on 66.35 percent of their throws.

The Bucs were equally as bad last year in that department. But more important is how wide open receivers were consistently, which ties to why the Bucs had a significant drop in forced turnovers this season.

The Bucs’ deficiencies in that area were on full display tonight for the football world.

Frankly, Joe is numb.

Tykee Smith seemed to hit a rookie wall. J.J. Russell is a practice-squad caliber linebacker. The Bucs’ edge rush needs to be better, and tight coverage is too hard to find.

The overall defense is not the only reason the Bucs’ season ended tonight, but it is the weakness of the team, a team led by a defense-first head coach.

This Bucs defense was the worst since 2019, when it was loaded with rookies and young players, and learning a brand new scheme.

Joe expects better next season. Much better. Otherwise it’s time for change.

    FIRE BOWLES!!

  2. Mondy Says:

Todd Bowles needs to be fired. His defense couldn’t get off the damn field all game. The commanders went for it every 4th down because they know the probability was high that they would get it because Bowles defense SUCKS!

  3. NotBakersFault Says:

    Keep Liam over Todd, please!

  4. Simeon4HOF Says:

And frolic they sure do. Fire our HC!

  5. HC Grover Says:

We must become a normal team…an HC an OC and a DC, W/O Bowles. He must go.

  6. EA Says:

Both Todd and Baker have reached the ceiling, this is the best we can do folks.

  7. BucfaninMi Says:

Where’s that high dollar safety? Got his money

  8. Trask To The Future Says:

    TIME FOR A MAJOR CHANGE.

    BOWLES MUST GO.

  9. Dbucs Says:

Why wait? Two seasons seems like more than enough time. Its time for a change now

  10. Mike C Says:

Lots of Rookies and injury on D this year, if the next Draft is half as good as this one we will be fine.

  11. Tye Says:

    The defense lost this game…

    Commanders did not punt once…
    long sustained drives…
    time of possession….
    Less penalties!

The only thing that made it close was Wash kept going for it on 4th and goal…

Bowels is the wrong guy if the Bucs want to get to a NFC title game and sb!

  12. Bucsgoham12 Says:

Yes lets put Haynes and Funderburk in man to man… jeez some of yall.

Dean got hurt, Haynes is a practice squad cb, Funderwhatever came in for a bit and he is another PS. McCollum was committing penalties and getting beat.

  13. MegaFailure Says:

if theres anybody better out there id go get em

  14. BucfaninMi Says:

They didn’t respect the defense at all

  15. Miller5252 Says:

Need to see what the average yards on first down for Daniels was all night. Every first down they were getting 5-7 yards. Once they would do that, they could call any play. The D has consistently got worse after Bowles first year and every rookie qb or no name seems to career games. I get we like building through the draft, but this team needs some FA to fix all the holes on D

  16. BallHawk75 Says:

    @Joe

Why are you still willing to sacrifice another season under Bowles? Joe doesn’t run the team. Bowles is returning. Is Joe supposed to have a tantrum? Joe expected bad defense tonight and predicted a shootout.–Joe
Huge waste of time and resources to go on like this.
When you repeat the same behavior and expect different results, they have a term for that.
    Insanity.

  17. GoneGator Says:

    FIRE COEN!

  18. Again Says:

If only we would have been able to fill some of these known weaknesses before the trade deadline. Hmmm who would thunk it?

But I guess keepin Todd and this defensive staff another year will fix everything

  19. Say what Says:

The broadcast never showed a replay of the Commanders first TD. I would love to know how that receiver was so wide open on 4th down.

  20. WhatTheBucs Says:

Fire Bowles now. The NFC south won’t suck forever.

  21. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Well the Secondary sucks Joe

Winfield and Dean both are not playing up to their contracts.

They basically are only playing with one LBs…LVD, the rest of the LBs sucks.

Bowles and Coen both got outcoached tonight.

Kingsbury kick the sheit outta Coen tonight

  22. MadMax Says:

Its all good…a higher draft pick…maybe Emmanwori and Kennard…and we can hopefully say goodbye to Todd…we’ll see…in your hands Jason and Glazers…its all good

lets get back to it for next season…moving forward we will

  23. Scott Says:

Like trump and mcmahon say your fired

  24. Truth be Told Says:

The Bucs Pass Defense has stunk now for a couple years. We never get off the field on 3rd downs and the lack of timely sacks on3rd is maddening. Let’s be honest Bowles Defense is the weakness of this team. He needs to go. Keep Liam and bring in Dennis Allen as DC. No Pass Rush when you need it. Same old same old.

  25. tonytwocents Says:

A soft HC is a reflection of soft ownership. The Glazers, like Bowles, have no balls. And the results are what we witnessed today.

Yeah 20pts when the defense gave them to 4th down stops is soooo great.
Don’t forget the 3 and out with penalties. Canales did better in his first playoff run.
He isn’t ready to be a HC and won’t be offered a job this off season anyways.

  27. firethecannons Says:

Really good question Joe, so please ask Bowles this word for word. “Why do opposing teams receivers run through your defense like deer in pasture?” Because it happens all season, every season since he came to Tampa.

Dennis Allen! lmao I can tell you not for the Bucs.

  29. unbelievable Says:

I guess the difference is we all expect the defense to suck cuz they have all year. But 23 points isn’t that much.

Offense is what has won us game this year and tonight they were a letdown. Big time.

Coen had a poor game plan and multiple guys made huge mistakes including Baker, Barton, J-Mac, Mauch.

  30. TheBucsAnthem Says:

And where the hell is Antoine Winfield….. he’s not the same player anymore

    STOP BLAMING BAKER!

……There are 52 other players on the roster that could’ve played better to…..like the Secondary and the LBs.

Did you dumb Bucs fans forget that the Bucs barely made the playoffs????

Hell, it was the commanders that got the Bucs into the playoffs by beating the Falcons that the Bucs couldn’t beat all year long!

I swear, you Bucs fans are idiots

  31. Frank Pillow Says:

There were glimpses of this being a prideful group, but not enough to lay it on the line for the W. 54 left it on the field. But the secondary, including 31 has been marginal (at best) all year. And that’s being generous. The lack of an edge rush, combined with abysmal play from the other MLB position doomed us too. Not to mention some of the least skilled tackling I’ve seen from a Bucs’ D in a very long time. Josh Hayes, we salute you.

  32. BMOC24601 Says:

Definitely poor play on both sides of the ball tonight. We can continue to make the argument that defensive injuries, young players, [insert other buzzwords here] are all to blame… but the right thing to do here is to bring in a DC. I don’t think Bowles has the chops for that any longer. I respect him as a coach, and I get that the players like him, but he is the play caller and there were and have been FAR too many bad defensive games against mediocre at best teams.

  33. NotBakersFault Says:

Why waste another season, Joe? Our defense was the problem all year. Our defensive secondary couldn’t stop anybody or get turnovers. Bowles’ ceiling is getting in the playoffs and only if the NFC South continues to stink.

  34. BucfaninMi Says:

If the system falls apart because of injuries, maybe it’s the system. Again, Detroit has a bunch of injuries, the system doesn’t require special skills for a specific situation

  35. ElioT Says:

    Winfield peaked in 2023.

    Vea is overrated.

    Dean is worthless.

    There is ZERO edge rush,

2025 is going to be rough for this defense.

  36. NYbucsfan Says:

With 4 minutes and 30 seconds left in the game I would have let the get in side our 20 yard line. We had not stopped them all night with our them taking 4 minutes off the clock. At least if we let get inside the 20 we would have got the ball back and give our best players a chance to win the game.

  37. Tbbucs3 Says:

Honestly, the only thing that matters right now is if Lavonte David is ok….

Im gonna worry about that instead of reading these low IQ dimwits and their fire Todd Bowles post…

  38. Colonel Angus Says:

Bowles ain’t going anywhere, unless he retires. Bucs weren’t winning the Super Bowl this year so it was better to lose tonight and get the butt hurt over with. Let it out fellas.

  39. BucfaninMi Says:

We do lack depth, sorely lacking in depth

  40. firethecannons Says:

Can someone tell me why Jaden Daniels is even ambulatory–McCollum sent him flying into the hinterland. He never gets hurt–makes no sense.

Most injuries on defense and uhhh their defense has been trash except for the last Minn game. Pay attention.

  42. BangkokBuc Says:

Not sure if anyone else notices but the Buxs players don’t seem to be trying to “Peanut” punch the ball out much on receptions / tackles. Other games it looks like guys are trying on every play.

  43. Rick Says:

Time for change is NOW! Our D has been Swiss cheese all year. Everyone knew what would happen when Washington got the ball w 4 mins left! It’s time for change now!!!!!!

  44. Darren caputo Says:

Bowles cost us the 2nd superbowl with brady amd another 3 seasons with decent talent. Fire him and move on! Keep lepn or get someone lole gruden or someone who can hold players accountable. BOWLES IS TOO SOFT.

  45. Anon Says:

Bowles soft zone pairs well with the complete lack of talent on the defensive aside from DT. We’re worse of than an expansion team out there with Hayes and Funderburk, Britt, Jones, and whoever is lining up at safety for the day.

  46. BucsFan81 Says:

Next season. Why??? Why go through another season of this we seen this same show with Bowles every year. Start out strong suck half way through then rally to barely make the playoffs then get eliminated. No make the changes now. Keep the offense and Coen. Can Bowles and 70 percent of the defensive players.

  47. BrianBucs Says:

  49. Day 1-76 Says:

For all of the Coen haters, you can’t score if you never have the ball or it’s on the ground on your 15-yard line. If Bowles is coming back he needs to be forced to hire a DC.

  50. WhatTheBucs Says:

    Fire Bowles

  51. Oxycondomns Says:

none of the mistakes or coaching mattered when dean went down bucs playoffs chances were done

  52. Bucs4Ever Says:

    What’s Bowles overall record?

    Add 10-8

It is entirely possible that this is who Todd is…there’s a ton of data supporting that he is a mediocre coach.

    Glazer time.

  53. Jackson Says:

We have seen the ceiling of this team as long as Bowles is the head coach. Maybe, maybe playoffs, occasionally win the first round, but that’s about it. No NFC championship, or #1 seed with him. Better than the lost decade, at least they win a few, but if the goal is the Super Bowl, a change will be required.

  56. JustOneGame Says:

The blame goes to everyone, the game was filled with mistakes from everyone. The OC f’d up, the DC f’d up, the QB f’d up, guys missed tackles, dropped passes and had timely penalties. The TEAM f’d up tonight and the team lost because of it. You phaggots that keep blaming one person or another are clowns and should be fired from this site.

  57. Peter Says:

Defense was spare parts this year too many injuries
We need to draft lots of defensive players

What happened to the high powered offensive juggernaut we were supposed to be?
Everybody has been blowing so much smoke up the offense’s, and particularly Coen’s butt, but they’ve cost us games, including this one.

Some of us tried to warn yall about thinking the offense was a finished product and incapable of skrewing up but not only did you not listen but you won’t even face the truth now that you’ve seen it with your own eyes. Mind boggling to me.

  66. Jackson Says:

43 plays, 20 points. I would say that’s fairly efficient

  67. Saskbucs Says:

Baker reached his ceiling? Cripes you guys… we wouldn’t be in the playoffs without Baker. Him and Coen cost us tonight, bad timing on their part. Give him a defense and the Bucs will be just fine. Give Bowles a D, which they will do this offseason, and watch the soft zone continue to get roasted.

  68. CaliBucsfanClarke Says:

We need some dang corners and a legit pass rusher!

  69. BallHawk75 Says:

  78. Simeon4HOF Says:

  79. dumboldguy Says:

We were 3rd in the NFL in points per play for 2024. We matched our average tonight. Reason only scoring 20 is because we only had 7 possessions. Average NFL game a team gets 12. Our offense was in line to score 30+ points in a normal game. Just like our season average.

Defense can’t not make big plays ever and Washington made zero mistakes on offense (no drops, stupid drive killing penalties, fumbles, or even coming close to a pick).

The Glazer family have made it clear they want the team to show progress. After tonight Bowles has proven he cannot take the team any further than he already has. And tonight he took them a step backward

If you think he’s capable of anything better. You’re wrong.

  87. Chris Says:

Well they didn’t get it every 4th down but who does that? Especially against hard ball defensive coach like Bowles

    7 points
Strangely similar to another call a few games back when MacMillan had a ball stripped away from him after he possessed it IN TH ENDZONE.
    7 points
Both calls technically INCORRECT by the refs and both calls cost us the game.

Otherwise, I’d say the game was played well by both teams.
Still wondering why Bowles is banking time-outs though.
Does he think he can sell them in the off season or something?

  91. Adrnagy Says:

Hoe. You need to shut da fup. No cap money. No depth.
Baker let the team down. Period. The offense went missing. Penalties. Punt. Most of you guys are drinking toilet water. Daniels beat baker.

  92. Simeon4HOF Says:

We need a HC that knows how to manage a game and keep his team crisp and consistent.
And a DC that’s a Defensive Coordinator and knows how to build a defense.
He’s a former Safety and our Secondary is garbage

  93. Pewter Power Says:

The Bowles won the division again so that is the default excuse for keeping no matter how bad his defense is. Never mind Carolina is on their 3rd coach in 3 years, basically the entire nfc south at one point with has fired a coach or had one on the hot seat. Is it not easy for the most stable franchise to win the division even if it always comes down to the last game of the year.

If you’re keeping Bowles go get this dude some new assistant coaches. We’ll sit through another disappointing defensive ranked season and see if Coen saves his job twice

  94. Simeon4HOF Says:

A signed Edge, drafted CB, ILB, S, and DT will not even fix our whole Defense.
    Need a new DC.

  95. ReturnGrudenToRing Says:

The Bucs were lucky to even get this far with their horrible defensive backfield. At least the first 2 draft picks better be for defense. Hopefully with a new head coach.

  96. unbelievable Says:

@gp – he’s been doing that for years. He thinks he gets to redeeem them for s prize at the ends of seasons.

But today the timeouts didn’t matter. It was the giant mistakes on both sides of the ball. Drops, fumbles, penalties, bad snaps, missed tackles. All of it.

This was always going to be a close game and come down to who made more mistakes. And tonight we made way more mistakes.

  97. AlstottRocks Says:

Tough loss and game def got away from us after that fumble. With that said there were a lot of positive moments in that game and it easily could have gone the other way: McCullom’s punishing hit on Daniels, big, reaching first down from Evans, big run from Baker and nice, fluid runs from
Bucky. Overall, a strong season with a ton of bright spots ahead for 2025. We are a few pieces away from a deep run. A strong defensive draft could get us there. Onward!

  98. Simeon4HOF Says:

Any other defensive Coordinator in league would be fired over this defense

  99. Colonel Angus Says:

Gp you’re right about that play. WR never had possession, but refs blew whistle and play wasn’t reviewable. That was huge

  100. Adrnagy Says:

New punter. New center. 2 new starting WR.
No safeties most of year. No pass rusher. No LB besides David. No #1 cb.
And you guys blame Bowles. ?
Baker #1 in turnovers. New OC. No true fan base

  101. Simeon4HOF Says:

I hope the Glazers wake up Tampa Bay with some Surprise news and heal this defense laden town

  102. gp Says:

    un
He can keep his TO’s for all I care
I’m more fed up with the refs who have been doing this chit to us since the establishment of the franchise!
    It’s infuriating!

  103. gp Says:

    Colonel Angus
    It was a turnover
Not positive but I think all turnovers are reviewed, or at least reviewable.
Sounds to me like the refs are making it up as they go along, and no one is allowed to question them.

  104. Justin Says:

To those harking on the injuries to the defense, I get it. We were beat up and yes, we were running a bunch of JAGs out there. But then why did Todd put the game in their hands? If you know your defense is beat up, and hadn’t stopped Wash in the first 56 minutes, why choose to kick the FG for the tie and not go WIN the game with your top 5 offense? The reason is simple. Todd Bowles can’t accept that HIS defense is mediocre, and just like both Atlanta games, the Chiefs game, and several others, his conservatism got us beat.

  105. Bucs4Ever Says:

can bowles win a SB as head coach…that should be the question not confidence.

  107. Td Says:

Defense failed with Dean in the lineup. Then he gets burnt and is hurt again as usual. Blame this clueless coach who has a weak game plan that is exploited every week. When a team in the playoffs goes for it on fourth and 1 every time it tells you how much they respect your defense.

    Fire Bowles

  108. New Baby MoJo Says:

Team always worked over by inexperienced QB’s. End the suffering Bowles must be jettisoned.

  109. StickinUp4Centers Says:

“If only we would have been able to fill some of these known weaknesses before the trade deadline.”

With who? Haason Reddick and his 1 sack in 10 games? Josh Uche and his 0 sacks for the Cheifs? Maybe Tradaveious White would have helped but he had 0 Ints and 3 passes deflected after the trade. I get the notion, but it’s not based on reality
