Sneaky Priority

January 21st, 2025

Contract strategy.

Joe isn’t a big believer in spending money you don’t have to spend.

Joe figures a lot of fans may want the Bucs to extend right tackle Luke Goedeke’s contract. He’s entering the final year of his current contract in 2025.

Goedeke has been a helluva story. At left guard as a rookie he was awful. He flipped to right tackle the next season and was solid. This year? He was damn good.

The Sage of Tampa Bay sports, Ira Kaufman, believes Goedeke is one of the better right tackles in the game.

Jenna Laine of ESPN seems to agree. That’s why she thinks Goedeke should be extended this offseason.

Under-the-radar offseason priority: Re-sign right tackle Luke Goedeke. He has one year left on his rookie contract. But given the jump he made in his second year starting at the position with an 89.5% pass block win rate, the Bucs are going to want to lock him up with a new long-term deal early.

Again, Joe’s not a big believer in spending cash unnecessarily. Of course, Goedeke is important, but let’s say he has an off year in 2025 or even gets dinged up. Then the team is on the hook for major money when they could have had him at a better deal by being patient.

The Bucs took their time with left tackle Tristan Wirfs and he’s one of the best players in the league. So it would not shock Joe if Licht took the patient approach with Goedeke as well.

Besides, the money that the team might drop in Goedeke’s lap this year, couldn’t the Bucs use that Team Glazer loot to buy a corner or an inside linebacker?

Agree completely with JJoe on this one. He’s got it covered!

Thought this was interesting data. Pretty self explanatory. Just put it out here for your reading enjoyment. Hope middling Muncher is paying attention but doesn’t matter if he is. Can explain things to him but can’t comprehend things for him. He has had that problem for a long time.

Good take on this Joe. The Bucs need to get an ILB in free agency. Licht will handle Goedeke fine. Don’t forget Goedeke led the team in penalty yards

How much money do the Bucs have in FA?

  5. SlyPirate Says:

Goedeke’s concussion is concerning. 4 weeks on concussion protocol. That’s scary. I remember Luke Kuechly’s face when he suffered that career ending concussion. I just don’t want to see that again.

  6. Aqualung Says:

    Or…. Buy a pass rusher….

    In fact not “or.”

    “And.”

I know we still have dead money issues so it’s a thrift store purchase.

  7. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

Just remember a dice roll can end up different ways. Luke balls out again next year he is just that much more expensive

  8. Saskbucs Says:

Unless it saves you enough money to bring back David or sign an impact FA, I agree, worth waiting on extension for Luke. The concussion is a main reason why, and I understand players are getting concussed all the time across sports but his seemed more serious than it should have been and that’s a red flag for future impacts.

  9. Babygrace Says:

Really good OTs don’t grow on trees! If you have 2 OTs who are good you better get them locked up NOW or some other team will!

  10. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Gipper

Thanks for bringing some FACTS. I’ve always admired Baker although I questioned his maturity and his ints. He seems to have figured out both.

I knew he’s played well in playoffs but those stats actually shocked me!

  11. firethecannons Says:

agreed wait till next year on Goedeke

  12. 813bucboi Says:

    i disagree….

    extend him now…

if he continues to improve which im sure he will and JL lets him sniff FA, a team might/could throw a ton of money at him to be their LT….

i wouldnt mess around or take the chance….pay the man now

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  13. adam from ny Says:

luke might not even want to sign now…

he might want to keep rockin’…until he’s ready for a max type deal

(yeah i know, that’s basketball terms)

“SlyPirate SaysGoedeke’s concussion is concerning. 4 weeks on concussion protocol.”

    Agree, hate to see that.

Too bad he had to wear that goofy safety cap on top of it.

Almost like Mike Meyers on SNL wearing that helmet, chained to the swing set

  15. orlbucfan Says:

I vividly recall reading all the slams against Goedeke on here. Hardcore Bucs Radio fan so I don’t visually watch the games. Now, the opposite. Like really? It’s called PATIENCE.

^^mtn^^: Where do u come from? Mike Myers wearing a NFL helmet?

  16. ^^mtn^^ Says:

I was at Wossamotta U for a few semesters ……..

    Oh, wait, you mean SNL?

Don’t recall what type of helmet Mike Myers was wearing but it wasn’t a football helmet.

Maybe a skateboard or bike helmet

  17. ^^mtn^^ Says:

…. or maybe a hockey helmet, him being a Canuck & all 🙂

Or, if he improves further, he’s going to be dramatically more expensive to keep.

You sign guys early to get a discount, so the question would be, what kind of discount do the Bucs get. If they’re not getting one, or it’s very small, then wait and see what happens. But waiting to sign guys, who you believe are really good, yet still under the radar (nationally) tends to be a good move.

  19. garro Says:

Nailed it Joe! Luuuke! Said with an imaginary chant going in my fan brain. We need to pay the man now! We got lots of FA stuff coming due soon so get it done. Gotta make keeping our O line together a priority and it aint gonna be easy once everyone comes off of rookie deals. I’m sure Jason and company are way ahead of the Joes, Ira, Jenna and yours truly on this one.

    Go Bucs!
