Report: Liam Coen Trying To Lure Mike Greenberg To Jacksonville

January 28th, 2025

“Greeny, if you go to Jacksonville, you better learn to like Lynyrd Skynyrd. They’re like the GD Beatles in that town.”

Joe was always scared that ex-Bucs offensive coordinator and current Jags head coach Liam Coen would lift Bucs offensive line coach Kevin Carberry and bring him to Jacksonville.

But it appears another Team Glazer employee is his target.

Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda.com reports Coen is trying to lure Bucs assistant general manager Mike Greenberg to northeast Florida to run the Jags’ front office.

Of course, in his work trying to get Coen to Jacksonville, Jags owner Shad Con Khan ran off former general manager Trent Baalke and, as part of his sales job on Coen, Con Khan told Coen he could influence the new general manager hire.

Pauline types he has been told Coen is “pushing hard” to get Greenberg to Jacksonville. And Pauline also notes the only thing stopping Greenberg is if he wants the job.

Of course, last week everything broke about how the Bucs couldn’t reach Coen (allegedly) while he flew a clandestine mission to Jacksonville for a second interview. Allegedly, a Bucs official whose calls/texts went unreturned was Greenberg.

Greenberg knows exactly what really happened. (So much reported was unsourced allegations.) If Greenberg thinks he or the Bucs were wronged, Greenberg may not be in such a hurry to get to Jacksonville.

In a way, Greenberg is in the same boat as Coen was last week. There are only 32 of these gigs available. Who knows if Greenberg will ever be offered a general manager’s job again.

  1. Aqualung Says:

Greenberg probably realizes if he stays with the Bucs, he’ll be required to play deep middle in the Cover Who defense. Maybe he’ll bolt for the same reason Coen bolted. Tired of watching a defense that is coached to be inept at stopping the pass.

  2. 941bucsfan Says:

Lol yea Aqua coen bolted because of our defense.. nevermind the other $12 million reasons

  3. FortMyersDave Says:

Well, if Greenberg turns down Coen’s request, that certainly clarifies that the Bucs side of the story holds more truth than Coen’s version. Of course if Greenberg does go and talk it does not exonnerate Coen either as Coen’s handler, Kahn, might be promising to make Greenberg the highest paid GM in NFL history and money does indeed talk. I hope he stays in Tampa, he can probably wait and get a better gig than Jax but the coin could set one up to retire if the guaranteed number is high enough.

  4. FortMyersDave Says:

Hey Joes! That sportskeeda link you have up there also says that Tom Brady and his Raiders wanted Coen in Vegas, I wonder if that has any truth to it. Perhaps Spytek and Brady both wanted him as well but the Jags struck first.

  5. Pickgrin Says:

    I saw that coming….

Hopefully, for his sake – Greenberg will think twice about jumping ship to join a completely dysfunctional franchise – one that just desperately threw waaay too much money and control at a head Coach who has no experience at any level running an entire team…..

I guess if the Con man throws waaaaay too much money at Greenberg he’ll have to consider it though….

  6. Aqualung Says:

941 — you’ve apparently never heard of sarcasm. No seriously – Greenberg was being asked to play the Cover 2 Mike position for the Bucs.

  7. Leopold Stotch Says:

    El Serpiente strikes again…

  8. Anon Says:

Makes sense. Coen wants all the power and he gets that by hiring a guy that is just some accountant.

  9. HC Grover Says:

    LOL cover who.

  10. stpetebucsfan Says:

I get the DISAPPOINTMENT at losing Coen. Could we stop clutching our pearls.

Fans love; owners view it as a business! At the end of the day that’s what it is!
A business! If run the front office means GM, of course Greenberg should take it and we should all thank him for his service and wish him well. There are only 32 GM spots. Now we expect NFL underlings to not only wait for one of just 32 opportunities but wait for the “right” one? How many crappy jobs are there? PLENTY! It’s already a rare opportunity, waiting for the “right” spot just makes it that much rarer!

  11. heyjude Says:

If Greenberg wants to follow the guy that went to Kentucky, went to the Rams, went to Kentucky, and so on…, it’s his decision. Probably not a great move. Thinking Mike could do a lot better if he stayed with the Bucs for another season.

  12. BucsFEver Says:

    Wow, what a snake. Disloyal.
Time to stop talking about this guy. WTH cares about the “Jags”. I’m interested in our new OC.

  13. BucsFEver Says:

So, whatever this nafarious duo offer Greenberg, the Glazers should match it. No questions asked. AND make Greenberg assistant GM.

  14. stpetebucsfan Says:

“Maybe he’ll bolt for the same reason Coen bolted. Tired of watching a defense that is coached to be inept at stopping the pass.”

THIS is the reason Coen bolted? See what the Bowles hate does to these people?

Is there any sane sentient person here who believes Todd’s D had ANYTHING to do with LC’s decision. Or could it have been perhaps…oh say tens of millions of dollars? Perhaps a shot at one of only 32 possible HC openings in the NFL.

Oh noes it was Todd’s D! LMAO Dang if people really want to be consipiratorial it would have made MORE sense for LC to stay because everybody knows if JL/TB can’t get the D fixed this season Todd is more than likely gone, thus opening the door for Coen if he had another good season.

Todd’s D if viewed as horrendous with no chance of improvement would actually be a reason to STAY!!!

  15. BucsFEver Says:

Benedict Arnold said yesterday “It’s Business”. Period.

  16. Dave B Says:

Good news, Bucs fans. The players haven’t left……we have an incredible offense FINALLY. And Benedict Coen is not the only guy who can call plays…..best to have someone with character.
We need to WORK, WORK, WORK on our defense, and also get the best OC we can. And add a DC

If Mike G wants to leave, we will miss him. But he won’t.

  17. Bucben1961 Says:

So much sour grapes. Can’t blame him if he takes the position…looks like they are being proactive and at least trying to change things in Jacksonville the complete opposite of what the bucs are doing to fix their horrid pass defense

  18. BuccaDAWG #1 Says:

If Greenburg wants a GM job then go. He can bereplaced just like the other guy. Let’s get on with fixing the Bucs, who cares about the stinking jags

  19. Bucben1961 Says:

Why is jbf.com moderating completely non controversial comments…very odd
Joe moderates every comment, ultimately. So many reasons. –Joe

  20. Bucben1961 Says:

So much sour grapes. Can’t blame him if he takes the position…looks like they are being proactive and at least trying to change things in Jacksonville the complete opposite of what the bucs are doing to fix their pass defense

  21. Bucben1961 Says:

Did it again…wow…being censored for going against the narrative…amazing

  22. Ra'Shad Says:

Cf course he wants Greenburg. He really doesn’t know anyone else.

  23. Durango 95 Says:

The Glazers have this totally under control. Should he decide to leave The Glazers will pick up the phone contact a third party and at the last minute offer him a nice raise. Works every time.

  24. heyjude Says:

True that, Ra’Shad. Coen has only been at the NFL for a minute. Thinking he burned some of those bridges in the past too.

  25. garro Says:

I suppose it is possible…Even with all the snakes involved with the NFL …. to make a bad reputation. Liam seems to be determined to do just that.

    Wow!

    Go Bucs!

  26. Permanently Moderated Says:

So Liam Coen is suddenly qualified to hire a general manager? Based on what? Khan is a buffoon with money.

And Stpetebucsfan, with all due respect, your Todd Bowles cheerleading is growing old. Every comment oozes of how much smarter than everyone else you think you are. That only convinces those who are equally like minded.

  27. Permanently Moderated Says:

Bucbin1961, you should try having all of your comments moderated like me. Hence my username. Reason remains unknown.

  28. BuckyBuc Says:

    small hat gang

  29. adam from ny Says:

joe should do a “rate coen’s first presser” thread…

also after greenberg watches that presser he prolly won’t join the guy, and will fax him over a xanax script instead

  30. BucU Says:

This is the first time I’m commenting on the scumbag’s move. What i would cherish is to see the scumbag fail miserably up in Jax. He’ll fit right in up there. Scumbag owner with a scumbag HC. They deserve each other.

  31. Bowles4President Says:

Greenberg’s got 15 years of great reputation built up in the NFL. That’s a lot to put into Shad and Liam’s hands. No amount of money can buy you back your credibility once you let others screw it up.

He should wait for ANY GM job outside of the Jags, Jets, Browns, and Panthers.

  32. Thisisouryear!! Says:

My goodness, it is a business. Only so many spots and if they show him the money, he’s gotta be gone. That’s what happed with Coen.

Someone made the comment, we need an offensive minded HC so we don’t keep going through this every season. I hadn’t thought about it in that manner but with today’s nfl that’s so true. A new coordinator basically mimics what coen did and he’s up for HC somewhere next year with the guys on offense.

  33. Thisisouryear!! Says:

Licht really has done a great job on offense. I think defense is harder now with the protective nfl. You really don’t see the defenses that are dominant anymore.

  34. adam from ny Says:

a little chucky madness on the sidelines could be a good thing…

after a touchdown he could run up on bowles in a frenzied state and shake him out of his mannequin challenge sideline pose…

and maybe gruden can emulate the rams offense some, creating a chuckaneer gumbo

  35. adam from ny Says:

like dungy and kiffen ran the tampa 2…

gruden can run the “chucky gumbo”…

    a mixed bag of chucky’s offense X mcvay’s offense

  36. gotbbucs Says:

Successful NFL franchises get poached. Its the nature of the beast. We can just go back to sucking if everybody would like. Then you get to keep the same crappy FO people and coaches all to yourselves.

  37. Marky mark Says:

Losing this guy is less of a deal then Coen. He was low enough if an assistant to be tasked with calling a back stabber. No big deal. Key him go.

  38. Beejezus-belt Says:

Yes there is only 32 of these jobs, but you choose the wrong one and it’s career suicide, i.e. Jacksonville, Carolina, pick an NY team etc. Just make sure it’s enough money you won’t need an another job because you are probably done.

  39. German Buc Says:

We are talking about a job as GM. So all the ‘disfunctional franchise’ talk would be a reason to actually take the job and turn it around while pocketing so much money that us ‘normals’ are barely able to imagine let alone to understand.
If it works well, he’ll be the king of the hill. If not, he’ll be without a job but filthy rich. You could do al lot worse.

  40. toopanca Says:

Greenburg isn’t just another carpetbagger who is passing through. He has been with the Bucs for fifteen years? That is long enough to actually know the areas and the franchises.

I have spent enough time in both the Tampa Bay Area and the Jacksonville Area to know that I would rather be here than there. And, I can’t imagine that Greenberg would want to work for that franchise even until the next time the doors there swing.

Now, for stupid guaranteed money, anything is possible; maybe even for just ambition.

But, I think that Greenberg has to believe that he is sufficiently established and respected in the league to think that he will have other opportunities.

Greenberg is part of the organization’s administration, not it’s rented coaching staff.

It’s not like Greenberg is a one year wonder on the staff of maybe the lowest paid Head Coach who is in the last year of his contract with a part of the fan base that hates him despite his the success of the team he coaches, and an ownership that doesn’t seem to think much of him either.

  41. Pewter Power Says:

Greenberg gets to fire Coen if he sucks at his job so it’d be worth it in so many ways

  42. BakerFan Says:

Can’t wait for the season to start again so Baker and this offense can make another OC look like the second coming of Bill Walsh so people will stop talking about Coen.

  43. Buddha Says:

Greenberg is way too smart to team up with a snake like Coen. Not going to happen. As for Coen, let’s see how well he does when he has to manage other people in an atmosphere of a losing franchise with a perpetually injured and underperforming quarterback.

  44. Tony Says:

    @BuccaDawg#1

We’ve been trying to fix the Bucs for 50 YEARS! You’d think they would’ve been fixed by now.

  45. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Cobra

All EXCELLENT points. However IMHO the situation you describe mirrors Todd Licht “bending” to take his current job.

Todd joined the Bucs in 2014 the same year as Lovie Smith, following the debacle of the Schiano years which had followed another disaster very YOUNG rookie coach Rah. I think he’ll do a lot better with ATL now that he’s experienced but…

Lovie was not hired by Licht they arrived together and while we all remember how Lovie sucked as the Bucs head coach he came to Tampa with a very good resume…Smith won the NFL’s Coach of the Year award in 2005 after guiding the Bears to a 11-5-0 record and a a berth in the playoffs.

Lovie had the power not “rookie” Licht. After Lovie was fired and Dirk was next up Licht was able to grab the power of an actual GM! Even with BA Todd was the one who brought him in, and then got Brady for him.

Licht had to “pay his dues” before getting the actual power. I alway wonder in hindsight if JL was “really” on board with selecting JW? Again imagine the Bucs had traded that #1 pick to a QB desperate team. With Jason’s skill set perhaps 3 or 4 really GOOD to great players some of whom will still be contributing today unlike Fameis.

Greenburg will not suffer any disgrace if Jax implodes because they are already viewed as a joke of a franchise and if he got run Greenburg would just be viewed as collateral damage and easily get another job, IF he wanted one after pocketing all of Khan’s gold!

  46. Bobby M. Says:

I anticipate he’ll be recruiting players next…..Godwin, Brendson, White….all very productive and know his system. Greenberg goes and that will be the green light for the players to follow for their pay days. It’s one thing to lose your OC, but we lose 3 offensive starters, OC and two top tier back office guys…..how do you realistically believe Bowles improves on 10-7? He had a top 5 offense and could barely squeeze out one additional win. Keeping Bowles will ultimately prove to be a miscalculation.

  47. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Tony

“We’ve been trying to fix the Bucs for 50 YEARS! You’d think they would’ve been fixed by now.”

Uhhh how quickly we forget. The Bucs won a Superbowl in 2020 and before that in 2002. They have won 4 straight Division titles! Its not the Bucs fault the NFC South is perceived as week anymore than it is Brady/Belichik’s fault the AFC was perceived as weak through many of their SB runs.

50 years? There are still a dozen of the 32 teams that have NEVER won a SINGLE Super Bowl much less two.

  48. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Bobby

No need to worry. Unlike coaches players contracts are respected and they’re not allowed to change teams simply because they want to. Perhaps some Buc FREE AGENTS might go there and that makes folks nervous about CG14 but I’d need to check with Pickgrin, Luv or D.R. to determine if any other Bucs free agents are cause for worry?

IE In upper managment..Coordinators, HC’s it’s permissable to break a contract for a “better’ position. Players are stuck.

  49. MelvinJunior Says:

I have been under the impression all along that it has always been a ‘done deal’ from the jump. And, that all of this “luring” talk is just the ‘optics’ of trying to make it ‘look’ better, & to save face. It just would not shock me at all, if the whole thing was not discussed or even initiated by Cohen & his agent during their meeting(s) with Kahn. So, we shall see… If Greenberg is named, then I believe this is confirmed 💯. I would not trust ANY of them. It’s a DIRTY business (though, I don’t know how “dirty” this would truly be). LOST of money, power, & control in-play here. And, the Bucs Ownership & FO are no different or better. They would do the exact same thing if given the chance. They were just outmaneuvered, outsmarted & outplayed.

  50. firethecannons Says:

Hate to see such a great talent(Greenberg) end up in a sht place like Jacksonville with a snake and an owner without integrity. well at least Licht knows what is happening and will have a chance to make his best play.

From what I gather something happened internally which made the front office question Coen’s emotional maturity.

From what I understand, the situation occurred in the middle of the season and was kept under wraps by the source for months.
    *******************************************************
Just for fun yesterday I posted a “theory” that the Glazers may have ‘played’ Khan (and Coen) because they knew that Coen wasn’t HC material.
That “theory” seems to be gaining some strength. LOL

    Just for fun
I don’t know because I don’t follow the Jags at all, But has there ever been a situation where Khan was interviewing HC candidates, offered a second interview, and was told “no”?
He doesn’t strike me as a person who likes being told “no”.

Could it be…….. That Kahn has been played?

    Maybe by Coen.

Maybe by the Glazers (And Coen was just a pawn)
Maybe the Glazers were quite aware that he wasn’t HC material?

Just having a little fun with C….. T….. possibilities.

    He’s gone, let him go.

  53. Aqualung Says:

spbf – don’t take everything seriously, man. It’s humorous to see that even silliness is triggering.

  54. gp Says:

Major Major props to the Glazers if they were actually able to pull such a Khan/Con

  56. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Greenberg hopefully has the experience and wisdom and integrity to avoid the Coen/Kahn/JAX dumpster fire.

  57. FortMyersDave Says:

Guys, Joe doesn’t go there with unsourced mud being thrown by other outlets. Also, Joe suspects there’s a reason it’s not in print with detail … Did anyone say that about the guy before last week? Absolutely not.–Joe

If it’s humorous simply enjoy the show, then again you always have the right to simply scroll by. Not QUITE as convenient but almost as quick.

As for me I only have ONE person, not you btw, whose relentless Johnny One Note posts are past being offensive, they’re just tedious and BORING.

I don’t even have to mention names because it’s clear which poster here says the same thing ad infinitum.
