Report: Liam Coen Advised Todd Bowles Of His Revived Interest In Jaguars Job

January 23rd, 2025

It seems Liam Coen claims he called his superior in Tampa, Todd Bowles, to report that he wanted to attend another interview for the Jaguars’ head coaching gig.

Sounds appropriate.

But a bunch of national media types earlier today claimed the Bucs (no names mentioned, of course) were trying to reach Coen for many, many hours but couldn’t.

Welcome to the circus off Dale Mabry Highway.

“Liam Coen said he reached out to Bucs HC Todd Bowles to inform him of his interest in interviewing for the Jaguars head coaching job,” ESPN insider Adam Schefter wrote on Twitter.

Earlier, Schefter wrote, “the Buccaneers have had no contact today with Liam Coen or his representation. The team has made multiple efforts to reach him and has not.”

Perhaps Bowles didn’t take the call or open the text? Maybe he was afraid to, or perhaps he was unafraid of Coen heading to the mess that is the Jaguars.

After all, the Bucs may have the strongest team culture in the NFL, so they say at One Buc Palace.

This is all very intriguing. Joe’s ordering takeout.

  1. MRWright88 Says:

As per Rick Stroud: To be clear, Liam Coen contacted head coach Todd Bowles around 5 p. m. Thursday. He said he had been with one of his kids, who had taken ill, at a doctors office. He mentioned the Jaguars situation only briefly, saying he wanted to look back into it.

  2. Durango 95 Says:

Who knows. But, safe to say Coen is done in Tampa. Can’t trust that guy. Moving on.

  3. Phil Says:

Other reports showed bowles wasn’t informed until the news already broke and Coen told him he didn’t respond to anything because his kid was sick when he was actually in the jags building

  4. gp Says:

Pop another beer, looks like it may be a long night!

  5. Sue Moore Says:

Shady. He said that after the outrage.

  6. Tucker Says:

Thought report said he told Todd he was with his sick kid all day and then at the end mentioned he might be interested in taking a look at the Jacksonville HC job again. Lol at this point I’m good with him leaving a lot of his success was the personal look at Dave same with him panthers are a dumpster fire. Cya Liam don’t the door hit you where the good lord split you.

  7. gp Says:

    Hmmmm?

  8. Tbbucs3 Says:

Yeah, from Jacksonville after he lied about his kid being sick

Todd Bowles is a leader of men

Coen clearly will not be, He will be a massive failure in Jacksonville.

  9. The Dave Says:

Something doesn’t smell right. No way Bowles keeps it a secret from the rest of the team. So higher-ups were notified, and Coen does his interview. Big deal. Happens all the time. Apparently Coen didn’t like Baalke, and Khan is throwing a ton of money his way.

If Coen doesn’t return, I am sure Robert Saleh needs an OC…

  10. El HEFE Says:

I’m waiting to see that this is some how Bowles fault

  11. Zzbucs Says:

    Pathetic piece of trash…..

Let’s move on , from this low class snake…….

  12. SB~LV Says:

Hey since it’s the evening of dueling rumors
Has anyone else heard that the Glazers jet has been spotted on Flight Tracker heading NE @ 635 MPH ?
    😉

  13. Paratrooper Buc Says:

    @MRWright88

If Rick Stroud is accurate then that’s just cowardly. I can accept him trying to make more money for him and his family but using a sick kid story to hide things is not a good look. If true that makes it hard to see how Coen can come back. Also let’s say he does, next year this crap happens again? I get not letting ego stop him coming back if that happens. However, if this sick kid story is true then I find it hard for Baker, Bowles, etc to be his “friend” when he could have told the truth.

  14. RagingBrisket Says:

This is the sort of chaos that could really derail this whole team and organization. Sad that the people in charge ie, Licht/Bowles/Glazers couldn’t control this business situation better. Look like a bunch of incompetent amateurs. Now in turn the team will suffer. Bucs will take a big step back in 2025 because the suits at the top couldn’t handle their business.

  15. Irish Laughter Says:

Oh no! Make Baker a player coach. What do we need an offensive coordinator for. The QB runs the show anyway. Keeping it real in Ireland.

  16. Todd Bowls Says:

Cue: former HC and longtime OC waiting for a return to the NFL ad the Bucs Ring of Honor, Jon Gruden

  17. Tbbucs3 Says:

This will motivate the Bucs offense even more next season

Expect great things from this team without that overhyped loser Coen in the building

  18. Simeon4HOF Says:

Now they are saying Saleh ain’t interviewing.
Wtf is going on w this bs

  19. Mr. Editor Says:

Let’s not forget that the Jags now also need a GM. Shad Khan could raid the Bucs’ front office. Not enough Glazer loot to go around! It’s a Bucs life!

  20. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Time to move on. Concentrate on what you can control, and that is the search for a new OC and other coaches to replace. The sky is not falling.

  21. Simeon4HOF Says:

Guess the psycho Jags owner liked the jetsweep call

  22. RagingBrisket Says:

Why are my comments getting blocked?

  23. Tucker Says:

It would be nutz if the bucs hired Doug pederson as the new oc lol

  24. HC Grover Says:

Brady is lurking in Lost Wages.

  25. DBS Says:

Only one that really knows anything is Schrager. Jacksonville GM finally got fired,

  26. HC Grover Says:

My whole family in Tampa are sick from my little grand nice who got it at school. Very sick with the bug.

  27. Rod Munch Says:

    One of 32 jobs.
    Generational wealth.
You get to pick your GM.

Coen is gone if he gets offered the job, and I don’t blame him. If I’m the Bucs, I’m counter-offering Bowles job to Coen, along with more money – but I highly doubt Coen would take the gig, since that would be an akward building to walk into with everyone knowing you undercut Bowles and took his job. Easier to just take the Jacksonville job where you can build the entire thing yourself however you want it.

This sucks, but anyone who doesn’t think they’d do the same thing as Coen is a liar or has a very very low IQ.

With that said, I hope the Jags do what Jagoffs do and they hire the terrorist loving ex-Jets coach and they got 2-15 for the next 5 years.

  28. LongSeason Says:

But it seems like Liam ghosted Nick Fury. You don’t ghost Nick Fury.

  29. BucsBeast Says:

It’s time to call Chuckie Gruden for the OC spot.
Liam should be let go effective immediately.

    ———

If you mean revert to being a bottom 20s offensive with ultra predictable play calling and scoring 18 points a game… sure, very LOL.

    No thanks.

One positive is that Bowles has picked two home run OC’s in a row, so he’s got a talent for it, apparently. The chances of hitting three in a row seems low, but Bowles as a defensive guy seems to know what schemes give him a hard time, and thus gives other defenses a hard time, and every OC prospect in football at all levels will be begging for the job as they’ll see it as a stepping stone to HC gig.

  33. Buc4evr Says:

Bucs found out about it and Coen only reached out to Bowles after the fact. As much as I don’t like Bowles as a head coach, glad the Glazers didn’t promote Coen to HC. The guy is a snake. Bowles may not be the best head coach but he has integrity. Coen is a liar and went back on his word with the Glazers. No way are the Glazers ever taking him back if he doesn’t get the Jaguars job.

  34. BallHawk75 Says:

I don’t blame Coen for taking the job. Always thought he was a one and done.

That was his M.O. coming in to Tampa.

    Probably won’t change either.

Plenty of eager talent to be found.

  35. Buc4evr Says:

Agreed Bucsbeast. Gruden is a far better OC than Coen will ever be.

  36. HC Grover Says:

Bowles is on the phone with…Lefty!!! A match made in heaven. They could keep it close next year.

Liam should be let go effective immediately.

    ———-

Did you ever actually watch the Bucs offense when Gruden was here? It was Leftwich levels of incompetence and predictability. Also, sure, let’s go back to basic a 1980s west coast scheme where the Bucs are finishing the year 29th in yards and 30th in points.

Wow, that is an all-time stupid idea.

  38. Dewey Selmon Says:

This has a dog ate my homework vibe

  39. Simeon4HOF Says:

    Bowles does have Integrity

  40. Rod Munch Says:

I’m seeing the Jets reject HC is going back to San Fran to be the DC, which means it’s over… Coen has the Jags job.

    Man that sucks.

  41. firethecannons Says:

Bucsbeast says: “It’s time to call Chuckie Gruden for the OC spot.

  42. Fred Says:

Todd already knew the news before he spoke with him. Don’t believe everything you hear. –Joe
That dude a snake we don’t need him around. We will be better we Barton, Bucky and McMillan in the second yr we can promote in-house and be just as good. I’m not worried if mostly healthy next yr we winning 12 games or more.

I cannot remember any coach or player who has gone from so loved to so reviled in a 24 hour period.

  45. Watch Daddy Sling It Says:

The Bucs are blameless in this one. I’d imagine the glazers felt they had the future succession in order, but better to find out now than once on the hook for $4.5 million. Can’t hold a grudge, but also waiting to see the Titans win 10-6 after Lawrence fumbles a jet sweep in his own red zone.

  46. LVMYBUCS Says:

Ok Munch–who is your pick if it is not Gruden

    ———-

Someone who runs a modern scheme, off the McVay branch (which if you want to credit Gruden, you can claim McVay is off his branch – although the offensives schemes are not similar). Who that is in particular, I’m not sure, but I do have trust in Bowles to find someone. He seems to know what questions to ask in interviews.

  48. HC Grover Says:

    Now you are walking around
Like you are front page news

    Monkees…SteppinStone

  49. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

kind of makes you wonder why he was hopping between the NFL and College and Sean McVay not giving him full time OC duties. So…next article on potential OC candidates? Freddie Kichens who was Baker’s OC in Cleveland. Baker did pretty good that year.

  50. HC Grover Says:

    Here comes Lefty!!

I did watch every single Sunday.
Gruden was hog tied with the bucs after the trade and the Glazers were pretty freaking cheap also. Plus he’s had what 20 years to master his craft. I think he’d succeed with our offense.

    ——–

People hating on Coen have the same mental stableness as an 18-year old girl on her period.

Who in their right mind would turn down like a 5-year, probably $6m a year job, all guaranteed, and get to pick their own GM and build the team the way they want in order to take a 3-year/$5m job, where you might be one injury away from being unemployed?

This sucks, I want Coen back and would gladly fire Bowles to keep him, but why would anyone be mad at Coen for doing what everyone with two or more brain cells would do?

  55. Cybetsecurity_intern Says:

Do this right and fire Bowles.

  56. Watch Daddy Sling It Says:

@scotty I’d imagine Kitchens at least gets an interview.

  57. 4-5straight Ls Says:

They will win as many Super Bowls as Hillsborough High School – go take your money and spend it on chew

  58. Cobraboy Says:

Seems a lack of maturity in how he has handled the situation.

This does not speak well as a leader of men.

His HC tenure would get off to a shady start.

  59. Pahpahmike Says:

Plenty more young great offensive mind out there and the Bucs proved they can find good assistant coaches. Let’s get that OC, fill those vacant defensive spots and go win this division again. Jacksonville is the ones who should be worried. Coen did well with the Bucs Last season but, who’s to say he’s gonna do the same next year especially when now he will be running an entire team not just an offense, and JV went out of the way to accommodate the hire. To many times these top assistant get the HC jobs any only made 3 years if that in many cases

  60. Andy Says:

Let him go. Its fine cohen have fun at Jacksonville i can see your not a man of your word. Not cool.

  61. Tbbucs3 Says:

“ Did you ever actually watch the Bucs offense when Gruden was here? It was Leftwich levels of incompetence and predictability.”

Rod criticizing the only two OCs that have won a Super Bowl with the Bucs. Cant make that up. LOL!

    ———–

The Bucs won the SB because of a defense that gave up 12.2 points a game, and in the playoffs gave up 3 net points, total, over 3 games.

Gruden DESTORYED that defense to build his offense. He let Sapp walk, he cut Lynch – why, to sign Charlie Garner, Tim Brown, and every 30-something year old injured offensive lineman he could find.

Gruden’s offensive rankings by year, points per game:

    2002 – 18th
    2003 – 18th
    2004 – 23rd
    2005 – 20th
    2006 – 31st
    2007 – 18th
    2008 – 19th

The guy sucked as an OC, running even at the time an outdated scheme. He’s always been vastly overrated because he had Monte Kiffin to bail him out.

  64. New Baby MoJo Says:

Jeff Jagodzinski breathes a sigh of relief moving up a spot to second worst OC hire in team history.

  65. Adrnagy Says:

It doesn’t matter. If Coen leaves good for him. Bowles will hire someone better. Licht will draft good players and be active in free agency. And baker will learn not to be number one in turnovers.

  66. Simeon4HOF Says:

It’s how he and the jags are doing it duh

  67. Tucker Says:

It’s not that he did it, it’s the shady way he did it munch, come on man you know that.

  68. Adrnagy Says:

  69. Adrnagy Says:

  70. Simeon4HOF Says:

  71. Pewter Power Says:

Damn now it’s just sad I can’t laugh anymore. Bucs fans got the feminine energy of a teenager. Mad that the obvious happened and another billionaire owner could match the Glazers plus give him a head coaching title. Is it just the selfish need to keep him at the coordinator level to help Bowles keep his job and keep Bucs relevant another year. Get over yourselves wish the man well and get on with it. Too much pettiness for a fanbase that’s just finished bragging about how many times it’s won the division. Is it’s because of Bowles stop acting scared about Coen leaving. We have dumb owners just accept it

It’s not that he did it, it’s the shady way he did it munch, come on man you know that.

    ————

    The way he did what?

You’re going off internet rumors to build a timeline where he ‘signed’ a deal while scheming to break it the entire time, and then didn’t return anyone calls while he and Khan were smoking cigars laughing at panicky texts as they plotted who to steal off the Bucs roster.

I’m just going to use some common sense and say that isn’t how things happened, and thus not throw a hissy fit saying, “good, I’m glad he’s gone, I never wanted him anyways!”

Also, as I pointed out repeatedly yesterday, a new deal means nothing if he’s getting a promotion. The Bucs could give Coen a new deal every hour, and the Jags can still just come in, offer a HC gig and then the Bucs ‘agreement’ means nothing.

The Bucs should, secretly, directly contact Coen and offer the Bucs HC gig. Who isn’t to say that didn’t happen by the way – and the reason no one at the team could get in touch with him is because was being pitched by the Glazers themselves to be the Bucs HC?

  74. orlbucfan Says:

Well, he’s shooting his credibility in the cornhole. You know the players are burning up the airwaves. That would be the krewe following this including CG14 (I hope).

They’re a bunch of drama queens for sure. It’s the spurned boyfriend routine, because he’s left them, he’s now their enemy even though they’re still completely in love with him – but they need to lash out and say they never wanted him, he wasn’t any good, he’s easily replaced, etc etc etc, that’s the only way they can sleep tonight.

  76. BucsBeast Says:

You’re right Rod. He controlled every aspect of the team and personnel.
He controlled the checkbook and he was the GM.
But you’re right man. How dare I mention a offensive guy that had his previous offense and his new team in a SB at the Sametime. How dare think a SB winning offensive mind who schemes every single game over the years hasn’t changed his scheme almost 20 years.

Well guys. It’s off to my hole now… Rod knows wayyyyyyy to much for me.

  77. Todd Bowls Says:

Another case of bad clock management by Bowles.

Instead of immediately opening the email, he opened it 5 hours after Coen had landed at Jacksonville Airport and was meeting inside the Jags facility.

Going, going, gone……..Kiss him goodbye! Cya ya, Slimey Liamy Basterd

  78. Rod Munch Says:

BucsBeast – Did you see the points per game rankings by year? Did you see his ‘success’ in Vegas? No, you didn’t, apparently.

  79. Benedict Coen Says:

Bowles was the big winner tonight. As a fan base, we have to rally around the coach and the ownership and GM that support him. Loyalty and integrity go a long way. I hope we can fix the defense and fund someone competent to fill the OC gig

  80. Tucker Says:

It’s not internet rumors it’s from reporters reporting believe what you want bud you always do anyhow.

  81. Watch Daddy Sling It Says:

It’s definitely every single coordinator’s “dream” job title. I don’t think that particular gig is any coach’s dream job. He had the keys to the kingdom and an offensive roster ready to go deep next season if the defense improves even a little. Could literally write his own ticket here or anywhere after that. NFL coaching alumni is littered with hot coordinators who took the wrong job.

  82. Biggun Says:

it’s kind of like you found your dream girl so now you fight for her or just let her go and be miserable forever, we ALL have been through this if it doesn’t workout for Coen at the Jags welcome him back and make the relationship work, at least he knows and Bucs knows where each side stands either way.

  83. Rod Munch Says:

What if the real timeline is that the Bucs heard that he was going to get a second interview in Jacksonville, and the Bucs tried to get out in front of it and called him up and offered him the reported 3yr at $5m a year deal, and Coen said something like, that sounds good, let me think about it – and instead the Bucs just rushed to release info that Coen was coming back, either to undercut him getting the Jags job by making it look like he was going back on his word, or if there was just a flat out misunderstanding.

The facts, as we know them, is that he never signed anything. And, again, let me point out it doesn’t matter what he signed, a promotion to head coach can not be blocked regardless of any deal that is signed.

Point is stop being a bunch of morons. You literally don’t know what happened yet, and now idiots are out saying how Coen was never any good, he don’t even want him back if he came crawling back… You just sound ridiculous.

  85. Pahpahmike Says:

bowles is retiring in a year or so anyway…

even with all these division titles and 10 wins this past year, it sorta seems like he’s always just hanging by a thread…

and with the defense in shambles – unless there is a quick fix under bowles this year – losing is gonna more than likely be blamed on him – and the axe will come down regardless…eventually…

so shmucky coen was all but guaranteed the gig soon enough…as yes, i’d say our next coach will be an offensive head coach as well…

what was this coen guy thinking…?

He will probably leave them for a college team, Coen only been at a place for 2 years once. He bounces job to job every year.

First of all, why does the NFL allow a signed contract to be nullified for a HC promotion? These dudes are not children that need a get out of jail free card. End that idiotic loop hole. The ramifications are that the original team could get screwed at the last minute by their coordinator!
