Report: Jaguars Ask To Interview Liam Coen; Will He Accept?

January 7th, 2025

So NFL Network reports the Jaguars formally requested to interview Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen for their open head coach position.

There is no report regarding whether Coen turned down the opportunity, or will turn it down.

Per NFL rules, Coen wouldn’t be eligible to interview until next week.

Last week, Coen played negotiator at his weekly news conference. He artfully danced on both sides of the fence, talking about how happy he is in Tampa and how he’s in no rush to be a head coach. But Coen also said he wants to be a head coach and didn’t try to say he needs more seasoning for the job.

It felt like Coen’s agent (assuming he has one) was smiling and nodding in agreement while watching on YouTube and sipping a congnac.

As Joe has written previously, Joe hopes Team Glazer finds and meets whatever Coen’s price is to not interview for a head coaching gig this year.

  1. Tbbucs3 Says:

Maybe NFL team should just let Todd Bowles start picking their coaches for them?

  2. Waterboy Says:

Baker Baker the head coach maker. And to think Todd Monken turned down the OC job to coach Lamar Jackson and we’re still not hearing his name in any HC conversations.

  3. Tony Says:

The geniuses better pay him whatever just to keep him. They’re definitely not “lacking $$$$.” They just don’t wanna spend it.

  4. Beeej Says:

Jax is probably the best situation out there

  5. Dlavid Says:

I guess we get another year of Bowles and his mid season slumps , poor clock management and mediocracy hhmm

  6. Deuceswild78 Says:

Being a bucs fan in Jacksonville i wouldn’t wish this on Coen or the bucs… jags are a dead end street

  7. Colin in Canada Says:

Coen will be back with the bucs

  8. Lord Cornelius Says:

“Maybe NFL team should just let Todd Bowles start picking their coaches for them?”

Seriously lol I think this is unprecedented?

A defensive head coach who 2 years in a row hires OC’s that are immediate HC candidates for how well they do. Someone needs to give Bowles/the organization props on that in general.

At least we can have some confidence he can hire a solid OC if we have to replace him. We have the QB, the O-line, and the weapons and know what works well with the personnel we have.

  9. Leopold Stotch Says:

Joe, there’s been a Byron Leftwich sighting. The Patriots are reportedly interviewing him for HC. Perhaps Mr. Brady put in a good word?

  10. Leopold Stotch Says:

Also, God help Coen if he goes to Jville. Seems like there’s no hope there.

  11. JoeSea Says:

At what point do we trust Bowles to hire OCs? The guy is 2/2

  12. View from 132 Says:

Yeah, THIS is what offensive coordinators preparing for the playoffs should be doing this week. What a joke.

Why not prep to interview at a top law firm the same week you take the bar exam?

Or drive the ice highways of the Alaskan oil fields the week you prepare to take your driver’s license?

Or apply for the transfer portal the week before a bowl game?

Absolutely vile that the NFL would put coaches in this position. There should be no interviews at all until Super Bowl Monday.

  13. Ds Says:

I live in Jax, I’m not sold on Trevor Lawrence he has had alota weapons but doesn’t seems to have “it” also the defense is worse than the Buc d

  14. Crickett Baker Says:

I think Coen should go to an interview, just to check it out, but I think he is very happy to stay with our team, for now. So it seems.

  15. heyjude Says:

Oh no! My concern is what affect this could have on the team going into the playoffs knowing they could lose their OC.

  16. Ds Says:

Also is it sucks living here

  17. kgh4life Says:

Jacksonville needs a lot of work: oline, and defense comes to mind.

  18. BakerFan Says:

I don’t think Trevor can do the things that Baker does in Coen’s offense.

Joe, there’s been a Byron Leftwich sighting. The Patriots are reportedly interviewing him for HC. Perhaps Mr. Brady put in a good word?”

The Rooney Rule interview…. i doubt anyone is seriously looking at him.

  20. Leopold Stotch Says:

StormyInFl… Fair point, forgot about that. I was going purely off the fact he waa Brady’s OC and creepy Robert Kraft loves Brady. I highly doubt anyone would want him either. Guy was like a 5 year old playing madden with his play calling 🤣

  21. Saskbucs Says:

Lawrence at 55 million with that OL and Tank Bigsby or Baker at 35 million with a top 5 OL and Bucky Irving. I know it’s not that simple, but build off this year, hopefully take a run at the SB knowing you will be loading up the D this offseason and then take your HC shots if you want.

Easy for me to say but I would play it that way, ala Ben Johnson. The Bengals job could be open next year if they miss the playoffs again… Burrow and Chase wouldn’t be a bad starting point.

  22. Mveal2006 Says:

Good situations are hard to find.

This one just blew a super bowl winning coach.

    I’d pass. Same with jets.

    Patriots make sense

  23. GoneGator Says:

    Liam:

“Yeah, I do believe I’m ready to do so,” Coen said about his readiness to be an NFL head coach. “I don’t think you’re ever truly fully ready but yeah, that is a dream. Does that need to happen when I’m 39 years old and having probably the most fun of my life coaching, working and being here?

“No, that doesn’t mean that needs to occur right now but yeah, that is the goal. That is absolutely the goal, but like I said before, that goal can hold off for a while here and continue to do what we’re doing. That would be pretty special.”

  24. Chris Says:

I live in Jax now he shouldn’t want to come here. It sucks here and I miss home! 🤣

  25. BucVoyager Says:

Jax needs a new owner, GM and QB.

    Definitely not the ideal place.

NE would be my choice if I were him. He’s from that area and they have a new QB he can work with from the ground up.

  26. Pewter Power Says:

Did all Coen offensive staff get signed to a two year contract? If so he’d just wait until next year and take them all with him wouldn’t he. Hopefully they signed 2yr deals and not 1yr. If Coen is smart and he does come back it’d probably be 1yr. Spend the rest of 2025 preparing to be a head coach like you said no need to rush. Hell just save Bowles job in 2025 so he won’t coach Bucs

  27. ocala Says:

Liam Coen should be the Bucs head coach no matter what happens this postseason. The Bucs will be making a huge mistake in my opinion if they let him go. You do not let an offense genius like him out the door.

  28. GoneGator Says:

I think Liam is going to want to run it back with the Bucs. HC opportunities will still be there after he runs it back with the Krewe.

You think he wants to start all over again?

I’d be surprised if he goes anywhere, especially this off season.

Most likely scenario, IMO, is he stays as O.C. for another year and then he takes over from Todd or goes elsewhere.

  29. Xristos Says:

Of course i would like coach Coen to stay with the Bucs.
Wont judge hime if he wants to be a HC just like Canales did last year.
But he has to make a good decision and not just accept any job.
Ownership matters. Jaguars are not a good run franchise.
Not only that it will be stupid to go work under GM Baalke. His historty in picking players is so bad but what is even worse is his history with coaches.
Not a good place to go.

  30. JimBobBuc Says:

Maybe Bowles will be next? I’m sure a lot of teams will be in line to sign Bowles. 😉

  31. Bucsarg Says:

Coen should stay put but he will go if he wants. Doug Peterson is a great OC plus he won a Superbowl as a head coach. Problem solved. I hope Liam stays but there are plenty of good OCs itching to coach Baker and work with Todd.

  32. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

I would love to see Coen as our next head coach but I highly doubt the Bucs fire a head coach with a 10-7 record and going to the playoff.

Good news, Bowles has a knack for picking up good OCs.

  33. ocala Says:

If Coach Bowles was a free agent would any team seriously be interested in making him their head coach?
I do not think there is any chance if it was not for the Rooney Rule that he would even get an interview.

  34. Joe in Michigan Says:

    ^^^^^^^

    I agree.

  35. Rod Munch Says:

    F-U Jagoffs.

  36. Rod Munch Says:

Since Coen is a ginger would the Bucs at least get the 3rd round pick? There is no bigger minority in football than a ginger.

  37. Tucker Says:

Oof Jacksonville is a mess dunno if he wants to plant his flag there.

  38. ChiBuc Says:

I couldn’t agree more. Why water down the playoffs with distracted coaches? The fans deserve better, especially when you consider that more than half of the week 18 games are a bogus waist of fan’s $$ and time to watch backups

  39. ChiBuc Says:

Too bad the jags didn’t bite on Lefty. At least we would have gotten a draft pick for that turd sandwich

  40. Beeej Says:

Have to admit it would be better to coach a crappy team in Jacksonville than it would in Chicago, New York or Boston

    ———-

The reporting at the time was the job was offered, but Leftwich turned it down because the Jags wouldn’t also give him his hand picked GM. Leftwich was so incredibly clueless, he thought that with Arians out of the way, he, Leftwich, would show the NFL how amazing he was and then the following year every team in the NFL would be coming to him, begging him to take their job.

Meanwhile, without Arians there to shield him from his own stupidity, Leftwich put forth on of the most predictable and stupidly planned offenses in recent history – and has been sitting at home unemployed since then.

  42. Gipper Says:

Josh McDaniels had the OC job for a long time with NE and Belichick. Both times he left for HC jobs were disastrous. Doesn’t mean that the same thing will happen to Coen, but he should pause and maybe build up his OC resume before jumping into a HC job. He had the HC job, I think, at U of Kentucky and opted out after one year. Work with the Glazer’s on a succession plan for Coach Bowles. With the right assurances, Coen might sit tight for a year or two. Would be good for all.

  43. Lightningvinny Says:

I think Coen is great and the Bucs should offer him a ton to stay ,,, that said ,,, he didn’t have a good game last week,, kept throwing those side to side screens that kept losing yards ,, he was saved by our QBs will to win

  44. unbelievable Says:

I think he’d be an absolute idiot going to work for Shad Khan and Trent Baakle.

Blind leading the blind. I think he’ll get better offers, but hopefully the offer from the Bucs is the best!

  45. NCBuc Says:

Funny you bring up Lefty….. He’s set to interview for the NE HC position. Funny how things work.

  46. orlbucfan Says:

Coen’s gameplan STUNK in the first half of last week’s game. I can’t speak for Canales, but Coen is not ready to be a HC. He takes off, good luck sucker. Coen needs to focus on Sunday Nite. Hel-lo, we have a playoff game against an improving opponent. NFL really sucks with this distracting BS. Go Bucs, period!

  47. Mac Says:

I think Coen is as good as gone to either Raiders or Pats. Brady hates seeing the Bucs doing so well without him and likely sticks it to us. Also Coen hasn’t stayed in 1 spot for years. Was at UK then Rams then back to UK then to the Bucs and now likely another new destination. Sucks for us Bucs fan but we are about to let a good one go to keep a mediocre head coach that will be let go in the next year or two. Our division is getting better with 2 very good young qbs. Can’t afford to make decisions. Also what is this for Baker. 8 seasons and 8 offensive coordinators. Never had the same one back to back seasons. That’s crazy!

  48. BucVoyager Says:

Coen is 10 times the OC that Josh McDaniels was. The only thing going for any coach on the NE staff was Brady.

    That includes “The Hoodie”.

    There I said it.

  49. adam from ny Says:

lefty interviewed for the pats job………..whaow weeee !

  50. JReel Buc Says:

Biggest mistake would be letting Coen out the door while trusting that Bowles and another offensive coordinator will do it again. Bowles is the weak link of this Team being a true contender

  51. JReel Buc Says:

Glazers will mess this one up and this will put this franchise behind for the near future unfortunately Bowles will take credit for what Baker and Coen have put together this year

  52. Keydoc Says:

    Trade Todd/ promote Liam

  53. HC Grover Says:

    jags. HAHAHA

  54. mh1023 Says:

Bucs will lose Coen and be stuck with Bowles. The Bucs were not aggressive in the Cowboys loss and were not aggressive in their losses in general, that is Bowles. Way too aggressive on defense and passive early on offense.

  55. Stanglassman Says:

They should have to wait until the perspective coach’s team is no longer playing. After week 17 for non playoff teams or after the team is eliminated or wins the SB. Being able to distract the coaches from their current responsibilities is BS. If you want to hire a playoff’s team coach you can wait until they are finished coaching that season.

  56. Lightningvinny Says:

Who’s working for Sean McVay now ,,, he will do

  57. Pewter Power Says:

I didn’t know it was possible to be a Coen hater but support Bowles lol how weird is that

  58. Buddha Says:

Right now Coen is fools gold. He has a top 5 QB; a top 10 offensive line; a Hall of Fame wide receiver; and a rookie of the year running back. His conservative calls on the goal line against the 49ers allowed 49ers time to win that game; teams have figured out he is not as good a play-caller coming from behind. One decent year is not enough experience. If the Jags want him, so be it! He the potential to be among the best, but he still has a lot to prove. I think he knows that. It’s not as if he was star play-caller at LA or Kentucky.

  59. Buddha Says:

It is obvious many of you have never been in charge of hiring. Coen has a thin resume. He needs experience. You don’t ask a horse who won his first start ever against Maidens into a Graded Stakes race.I like him but he needs seasoning. He knows that.

LOL! Congrats on the worst hot take of the year. That’s quite the honor considering we’re only 7 days into the year.

  61. Calogero Says:

Why is everyone forgetting why these OC’s have such success in Tampa. It is because of the players Jason has drafted and the veterans that are still here. Liam, stay with the Bucs till we win a SB and then maybe you can consider being a HC. I wonder, which is more important to you, winning a superbowl or becoming a HC? When you win a SB, your value will increase and remain. When you become a HC before a SB win, you will most likely be HC of a losing team with no guarantee of success.
