Protect And Pay Kevin Carberry

January 24th, 2025

Bucs offensive line coach Kevin Carberry.

The Bucs lost two key coaches yesterday. They cannot afford a third.

With Liam Coen headed across north Florida to Jacksonville (hey Liam, you can build a Jeff Bezos-like estate in Palatka on a budget), Joe truly fears Coen will try to pickpocket Bucs offensive line coach Kevin Carberry.

The Bucs lost Coen yesterday. Hours before, they lost Kacy Rodgers. They cannot lose Carberry, too.

Since everyone (rightly so) was so blown away by the job Coen did with the offense as a whole, lost in the weeds was the job Carberry did with the offensive line. Aside from the defensive tackles and running backs, was there a stronger position group on the team? Joe sure doesn’t think so.

One of many ways to lure a good offensive coordinator is for the guy to know his offensive line is in good hands. Under Carberry, the offensive line was in strong hands.

Hey Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht and Team Glazer, don’t let Coen grab the best assistant currently on your payroll. Lock up Carberry with a handsome raise.

Joe has a hunch Coen will try to hire Carberry as offensive coordinator in title only. That way Carberry will be very well compensated and would then only leave Jacksonville for a head coaching gig.

It’s an old trick Chucky used with Bill Muir and it’s currently taken advantage of by Matt LaFleur with Adam Stenavich, too.

If Coen plucks Carberry, the two coaches most responsible for the Bucs’ offensive success in 2024 will be gone.

Be proactive!

Agreed. Lock him up and get the contract signed at gun point.

  2. Leopold Stotch Says:

Agreed Joe, Jags need Oline help bad. Seems like a no brainer.

  3. Hodad Says:

Do whatever we have to, and keep this same offense, and staff in place. Bad enough Coen bolted, don’t make it easy for him to pluck our staff. Promote Grizzard or Carberry to OC, and pay both a ton of money to stay. We already know Khan will over pay for coaches, we have to do the same. If that screws Coen in the process, all the better.

  4. Mondy Says:

Hodad just so you know our offensive assistants have two year contracts and Coen could only take one person and he has a scarlet letter on him, I doubt a lot of people in the Bucs will go with him.

  5. Bojim Says:

Weren’t they proactive with Coen the creep??

  6. garro Says:

Not just Carberry although you are spot on.

No more poaching of our valued staff! period! I dont think Carberry or anyone on our staff has been underpaid by the Glazers. I would bet that BA would say Hell !#@% No!

Picucci and others are sure to be on everyones radar and current rules are throwing teams like the Bucs futures to the wolves and making it impossible for successful teams to keep any continuity!

    Go Bucs!

  7. lewl Says:

Yep agreed, this has to be the focus right now. A good OL coach is worth a lot.

  8. Jecir Says:

They are on 2 year contracts. He can only take one to be OC. Rumors are Grizzard is the man to be next OC as he is the current Passing game coordinator. But if I’m a coach, do I want to go with a snake?

  9. FortMyersDave Says:

So how does the poaching actually work? Can Coen only poach someone under contract with Tampa if they are given a promotion in Jacksonville? If that is the case, then does that mean he can at most go after one guy on offense as his OC (in name only) if the Bucs do not allow him to speak to anyone else who is under contract or, for example, could he poach a QB coach to make him his passing game coordinator if it is construed as a promotion?

  10. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Why isn’t anyone discussing Carberry as taking the OC position? I think he would do an awesome job.

  11. HC Grover Says:

Our Gurus a man f many hats. He can do it all.

  12. Bucfan Says:

Let Bowles take the O/C position as well. Him calling the plays on both sides of the ball would be GREAT.

  13. Fred McNeil Says:

Fort Myers Dave, yeah, that’s pretty much how coach poaching works. My original understanding was that technically, they don’t have to let you go at all, but it’s considered bad juju if you don’t allow them to take a promotion. That may have changed to where you must allow a coach to leave for a promotion. And like you say, promotion is just a word. It means whatever you want it to mean. Especially with coordinators. If the BUCS forced Bowles to hire a DC, Bowles would probably still want to call the defensive plays.

Carberry wasn’t chomping at the bit to leave when Canales split. Contract or not, if he was unhappy, the word would have gotten out. He’s going nowhere. He’s building a h3ll of an OLine. He wants to finish the job. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

  15. FortMyersDave Says:

Thanks for the confirmation Fred. It seems likely Coen will try to take as much coaching talent with him as he possibly can unless Team Glazer gets pro-active.

  16. FlBoy84 Says:

Don’t see eye-to-eye with a lot of articles coming out of JBF lately, but def agree on this take. The guy is a difference maker.

    Carberry came aboard with Coen.

Canales took the Bucs previous (mediocre) OL coaches with him.

  18. LANshark Says:

Don’t sweat it.. Hire Lincoln Riley – he’s about done at USC, and surely knows how to get the best out of Baker.

  19. ModHairKen Says:

Jesus. God. If they want to leave, let ‘em.

It’s not as if there is a finite supply of coaching talent. Go get some eager, younger and more energetic coaches and move the F on.
