Nick Caley Interviews With Bucs

January 28th, 2025

So last night the Bucs pumped out news that they interviewed Nick Caley, a Rams tight ends coach to succeed Liam Coen.

Joe’s reaction? Whoop-tee-do.

Sorry if Joe cannot get worked up over a tight ends coach with a thin resume. OK, OK, he worked for Bill Belichick. So did Charlie Weis and Josh McDaniels. You see anyone fitting them for a gold jacket?

Joe watched old videos where Boston media was triggered when Caley left New England. Not sure why. Oh, he worked with foot-rubbing Rob Gronkowski a couple of years. That’s it!

Caley is currently the passing game coordinator with the Rams and tight ends coach. Sorry, when Joe thinks of tight ends coaches who became offensive coordinators, Joe thinks of Mike Shula and Brian Schottenheimer.

Boring-arse run-on-first-down, run-on-second-down, force-passes-short-of-the-chains offense. That’s offensive!

No thanks!

If the Bucs are going to hire a Rams assistant, Joe is far more interested in Nate Scheelhaase.

Have the Bucs reached out to Lincoln Riley yet?

(Before you hit Joe with “Have you seen Lincoln Riley’s salary, Joe?,” go research his job security at USC. It ain’t good. You can’t make a dime if you aren’t employed and Riley just may want to get ahead of the Grim Reaper. Chip Kelly did just that last year quitting UCLA to become a coordinator. Google is your friend.)

Josh McDaniels is probably worthy of a gold jacket from his time with the Patriots

I’d take him as OC in a heartbeat in Tampa. He’s not likely to get another HC gig for a good while

“Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?”

  3. BA’s Red Pen Says:

I will not pretend to be an expert on offensive coordinators but Bowles, who isn’t my favorite, is 2 for 2 with his OC hires. I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one. Get Godwin back and have 62 practice snapping A LOT and we’re good.

  4. FilthyAnimal Says:

I don’t think you can profile the guy just because he was a TE coach. Fact is, he worked for Belichick for years, so he can probably coach, and second, if Sean McVay makes him passing game coordinator, you can bet he’s no schlub when it comes to the passing game. Keep an open mind. He has more pro coaching experience than Scheelhaase. I’d have to agree that Scheelhaase is more intriguing, but I’ll leave it up to Bowles and Licht to make this decision. They’ve done well 2 years in a row. My guess is that our coach and front office are a little more plugged into qualified candidates, and there’s a lot of qualities you have to balance when picking a coordinator. I’m glad they’re looking at a lot of young guys with a variety of backgrounds. It’s also helpful for the organization to have some intel on coaches for future staffing. And don’t be surprised if they’re looking for someone who is a leader-of-men type to succeed Bowles in a year or two.

  5. Aqualung Says:

Durango, take 2. My first attempt to admire your last comment was wafted away by Algo. Don’t want to use certain words.

Thank you for quoting the late John Lydon. We both know what band he fronted and what a great rebel he was. Apparently even trying to reference the band in code doesn’t work, so, nevermind the bullocks.

  6. FilthyAnimal Says:

I don’t understand the whole Lincoln Riley thing. They’re going to try to go with someone who can bring as much continuity as possible. That probably means someone on the current staff or one of the Rams guys. Udinski from Minnesota is also a real contender I’d bet.

  7. Mach Says:

I personally like Josh Grizzard. I think he is the best choice, keeps continuity, and he seems to be very smart and worked in a lot of successful systems and with a lot of quality modern coaching concepts. He is the best option for the team, in my opinion. Sometimes, we have the answers staring right back at us in plain sight. Let’s not complicate this. Just offer Josh grizzard, and let’s get going. He was a major part of why this offence was successful last year.

  8. DeRobbins Says:

Joe. you missed this on Lincoln riley: If he is fired- the school has to pay him 88 million.

if he leaves willingly he is passing up 88 million. The bucs are not going to sign him to 88 million contract.

So yes. He will make BANK if he is fired. He will make significantly less than bank as a offensive coordinator.

So your ‘hard to make money if he is fired’ comment, is just, wrong.

  9. DeRobbins Says:

A quick google pulls this up:

As of January 2025, Lincoln Riley’s contract with the USC Trojans is estimated to have a buyout fee of $88 million. This would be one of the largest buyout fees in college football.
    Explanation

Riley’s contract is for $110 million over 10 years.
His salary is set to increase to $10.5 million in 2024.
He also receives annual raises and bonuses for playoff appearances and conference titles.
If USC were to fire Riley, they would have to pay the buyout fee.
The buyout fee would be one of the largest in college football.
The cost of the buyout would be enough to make even the wealthiest boosters hesitate.

    Other considerations

The school that hired Riley away would also likely have to pay a large sum of money.

im glad bucs are doing due diligence. nate is a young coordinator. the bowles 2 for 2 comments make me laugh like licht has nothing to do with it. hell even baker does

  11. Aqualung Says:

Hey, sometimes you have to test the floor. How low is low? How well does the least qualified person for the job interview? Because people can fake an interview. Not the worst thing to give this no chance dude a yack. Only thing, it consumes precious time the Bucs could be interviewing defensive coordinator candidates.

Uhhh look at other team news besides Bucs. Pats brought McDaniels back and it was a lock the moment Vrabel became coach.

  13. Let em bake Says:

Continuity. Baker has earned the right to push for it. Hence, the rams staff will produce the next coach.

  14. Aqualung Says:

In a moment of reflection….Todd may not like being shown up by the offense, and want someone more like Canalwater. Wouldn’t surprise me at all for him to decide that his defense was too tired again, like he said about BA’s offense. He wants him some long 2 minute 3 and outs, back to running Rachaad up the gut twice and then have Baker running for his life because the defense knows exactly what is coming and (gasp) has a coverage designed to stop it.

So maybe this dude is the lead candidate?

  15. heyjude Says:

    Agreed, a no to Caley.

    Yes for Nate.

  16. stpetebucsfan Says:

    “he worked for Bill Belichick.”

A LOSING coach over ten years and two franchises without Brady.

BB is NOT a winner with Brady. Brady OTOH obviously did not need BB!

  17. Darin Says:

You see anyone fitting Liam coen for a gold jacket? How about Todd Bowles? Right. So many guys just need a chance. So many can coach, lead, adjust and manage the clock correctly.

  18. Mord Says:

Hey Aqualung — John Lyndon is not dead.

Meanwhile, looking forward to JTS’ spot being “Pretty Vacant”

  19. Mord Says:

    *Lydon (thanks, autocorrect)

  20. Fred Says:

As of this morning, I’m still available and somewhat flexible on salary.

  21. Jeffs grandpa Says:

Sure Joe just keep telling yourself that about Riley I’m sure it’ll come true

  22. Pahpahmike Says:

I am with you Joe about Caley. I can’t think of one Belichick assistant who has had success in the NFL. As for Riley, I did ask the question about his salary but, as you said, Riley may be on the hot seat and may be on the edge of getting ran out of town. So with that being said, maybe both sides, USC nor Riley would make a fuss if he leave for the Bucs. I also like that choice

  23. Bucfan Says:

Good luck getting a ‘named’ O/C with Bowles a H/C.

  24. Jeagan1999 Says:

Who does Baker Mayfield want as OC? That’s the ONLY question what needs to be
    asked!

  25. Kevin Says:

I would like to see them interview Doug Peterson

  26. SlyPirate Says:

Regarding Lincoln Riley … I know several USC alumni donors. They all want Riley gone. He won’t last at USC much longer.

  27. 813bucboi Says:

dan campbell was a TE coach before becoming HC…..

i think TE coaches bring a certain type of mental toughness and physicality….

as long as this OC values running the ball im fine with that….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  28. B Says:

Wonder if we have reverse incentivized Bowles at this point on picking an OC with the bona fides to replace him and this guy actually isn’t actually an unrealistic pick at all
