Liam Coen Watch Begins

January 5th, 2025

Wanted in New England?

Joe understands that maybe after the Bucs beat the slimy Saints to win the NFC South title today, not every Bucs fan will still consider Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen to be the next Bill Walsh.

However, one game doesn’t make Joe think Coen won’t be working as a head coach somewhere else next month. In Joe’s mind, Liam Coen Watch has just launched.

The Patriots canned coach Jerod Mayo after one season this afternoon.

Look out, Coen.

Joe thinks of all the current openings, New England is the greatest threat of pulling Coen away from the Bucs. Coen from Rhode Island, grew up a Patriots fan and, most important, New England has a budding star rookie quarterback.

Coen isn’t going to any team that doesn’t have a stud quarterback. That’s career suicide.

Why not the Bears and Caleb Williams? That organization is a train wreck. New England, under creepy Bob Kraft, is a solid if not strong organization with its act together.

New England is one team that frightens Joe. And now that job is open.

Back up the Brinks truck. Best OC in a long while.

  2. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Yeah

    Please retain Coen

  3. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Today was pretty rough..

  4. Goodbuc'nlife Says:

10 mil a year should get it done.

  5. Zzbucs Says:

    Great OC, despite todays game…..

I hope he stays and don’t take Jets so saints job…

Smart thing would be to wait another season….

  6. Jmarkbuc Says:

Vrable will end up in NE. Take a breath, Joe

  7. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Joe,

Please stop with the P-O-P up advertising.
    It’s unacceptable.

  8. Simeon4HOF Says:

    Coen > Bowles

  9. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Don’t go to the Bear unless you wanna kill your career.

Caleb Williams is talented but who knows if he can get it together mentally?????

Joe, Coen’s parents reside in Florida and I don’t think he’d wanna return to Cold New England.

  10. Saskbucs Says:

Does anyone think this team shouldnt be taking a step forward towards high end Super Bowl contender next season based on the current roster, FAs and cap space?

Mark my words… if Bowles is still HC and can’t retain Coen or find a 3rd OC of his and Canales caliber … we will go backwards or be in this same 9-8/10-7 stagnant boat.

Is that Bowles hate? I don’t think so, cause I respect the guy for many reasons… but I have eyeballs and a brain as well and know this team should be competing for the Super Bowl next season.

Todd has 2 weeks to make me change my tune. Make the NFC championship and I will eat crow and tip my hat to Bowles and all you defenders.

  11. Dick LeBeau Jr. Says:

Cut it out. He’s not going anywhere. I don’t know why we’re still talking about this. They gave Mayo the boot without allowing him time to build out his version of the roster. Not worried about the front office letting Coen go.

  12. Jeffs grandpa Says:

Nice having you as a oc Liam have fun going 6-11 next year buddy

  13. Dewey Selmon Says:

Once Bowles goes against a playoff QB that shreds the defense in front of a national audience might persuade the Glazers to think twice about retaining him.

  14. #1bucsfan Says:

JOE I really hope the glazers take your advice and open of their check book to keep coen in Tampa. There’s no reason to let him go. Shoot tell him not only if he stays they will give him HC money to be OC but if he has the Bucs again as one of the better offenses in the league and we go far tell him he’s the Bucs next HC

  15. Colonel Angus Says:

As bad as the offense was, we still scored 27 points.

  16. Tbbucs3 Says:

Give him a raise. Let him do interviews and hope he doesn’t get hired

That’s all you can do because he for sure as heck won’t be a head coach here next season. Bowles deserves it.

If I were Coen, It might be in his best interest to stay in Tampa another year To get more experience and also if Bowles has a down year, then he could potentially step in.

But But let’s shut down the dumb conversations about Bowles being fired this year

    ____________________________________

This is downright comical. Todd Bowles is the reason the Bucs will not win another Superbowl…..and Tom Brady was the only reason why the Bucs won a 2nd Superbowl…..

Todd Bowles is the #1 problem

  18. heyjude Says:

Thinking the Glazers will give Coen and Bowles a raise. Coen will stay until Todd’s contract runs out in 2 years.

  19. Colonel Angus Says:

New England gonna put the full court press on. It’s Coen’s decision, I just hope he waits til after the playoffs to interview.

  20. BucsBeast Says:

Letting Coen leave will be detrimental to this franchise.
The NFL is an Offensive driven league now.
Coen and Baker are an amazing duo.
With a decent defense this club would be very very hard to stop.

  21. Jecir Says:

Joe, can u get someone to work on the way this site works on mobile devices? It is a pain to navigate. Maybe an app?

  22. Tbbucs3 Says:

Jecir, agreed, Joe needs to fix this advertisement BS ASAP.

Site has been easy to use for YEARS and now an absolute pain.

  23. Dan the Bucs Fan Says:

Do what Arians did for Bowles make him the head coach in waiting!

He has all the weapons he needs this team is one off season away from being a Super Bowl team! Why would he leave?

Still learning still growing as a coach he was dreadful today let him be coordinator a few more years Bowles retires then promote him!

  24. Lightningvinny Says:

Coen will get his shot but needs more seasoning,,,, he’s not ready for head coach just yet ,,,, today he had some really suspect calls and got bailed out by Baker and Bakers running ,,,, those side to side passes that kept losing yards today needed to be noted ,,, he needs one more year of OC ,,,, think of how good we can be!!!

  25. Tye Says:

Bowels DC value is one of mid to bottom tier in the NFL…
Bucs AREN’T going to win anything more than NFCS titles (until the other teams get right which Panthers and Falcons may already be and pulverize the Bucs next season) but surely not NFC title or SB…

Coach Coen is an extremely high end rare commodity that is greatly needed in the NFL to consistently win….
There are SEVERAL DC available that are as good (most likely better) than Bowels but ZERO OC!

  26. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

We MUST keep Coen. Hell, he’s 10x the OC that Canales was. Gotta get something done behind the scenes, or tell Liam to interview and promise to come back to the Bucs to talk before taking a job.
I agree that Vrabel may very well end up in New England.

  27. UKBuccaneer Says:

If the adverts stay, it falls on people to vote with their feet.

  28. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Coen was bad today. Overall though he’s a keeper.

  29. ThatAintRight! Says:

    @ Saskbucs

    – I think you’re right somewhat. Tampa Bay should be competitive for a SB. I think if not for a weak defense this year and injuries they would be a shoe in for one again. We don’t have the spark on offense to win the SB this year. Bucky helps, as does McMillan , Devin Culp, and Payne Durham.

Unfortunately with Godwin hurt , and Mike not the same old Mike Evans that we all have been so fortunate to know. The short and sweet answer is replace the outside WRs, draft an entire new defense, and punter. Resign the guys who are making a difference and let the guys go who aren’t. Point is we still will have holes. We’re not a complete team yet.

Who is going to defend the Vikings Justin Jefferson or like talent? Sha Barrett is not going to be able to get 19.5 sacks again. Probably not even DD sacks.

  30. Gipper Says:

Read this stuff and can’t believe it.

More than one says “the offense was bad today.” How do we know? The offense had 3 possessions in the first because the defense allowed clock eating drives and couldn’t get the ball back to the offense.

  31. Dewey Selmon Says:

What if Coen wants to leave because he has zero faith in his DC who happens to be his HC?

  32. orlbucfan Says:

What watch? Coen needs little more experience, and if he has a brain, he”ll be here.

  33. Let ‘em bake Says:

Bucs have won the privilege of another first place schedule. Conversely, the niners will have a fourth place schedule. Bet the niners as nfc west winners next year…

  34. Let’s Go Says:

Love Coen. I don’t get the Bowles hate. If Coen gets a job, Bowles selected 2 OC’s with little to no playcalling experience who became HCs after one season. Two years in a row the Bucs started strong, slumped, and kept fighting to the playoffs. That is what we want. If Coen goes, trust the process and let Bowles select another hidden gem. Maybe Thad Lewis is ready.

  35. Simeon4HOF Says:

Don’t think Coen ready either but I don’t want to watch our Ends cover playmaker anymore while we blitz a blocked safety

  36. GoneGator Says:

Just a little reminder of what the man himself said about all this:

“Yeah, I do believe I’m ready to do so,” Coen said about his readiness to be an NFL head coach. “I don’t think you’re ever truly fully ready but yeah, that is a dream. Does that need to happen when I’m 39 years old and having probably the most fun of my life coaching, working and being here?

“No, that doesn’t mean that needs to occur right now but yeah, that is the goal. That is absolutely the goal, but like I said before, that goal can hold off for a while here and continue to do what we’re doing. That would be pretty special.”

  37. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Gipper

3&1. Critical juncture. Naked QB sweep? And there were other stinkers.

Not Coen’s greatest day. Which is actually good for us in the end..

  38. stpetebucsfan Says:

    LetsGo

    Amen brother.

  39. Rjscheapseats Says:

    NE is supposedly hiring Vrabel

  40. Simeon4HOF Says:

Injuries and ironically need to focus on fixing our D will sustain Bowles.
He’ll get a chance and a Defensive Draft. Unless next week is just that atrocious.
Losing Whitehead, we really need Winfield.
And funny after all the collective ups and downs, Playoff hopes depend very much on Dean playing lol
Concern lingers, can Todd manage this Team in playoffs more effectively than during the season
Can his style get us SB win next year with a loaded Roster

  41. Cosimo De Medicinal Says:

I think Coen has done an absolutely tremendous job as OC, and if he were wise he’d stick around and learn from Bowels (what not to do in games lol) and take the reins with baker as his man. But…

should he leave, I’m confident Baker and the offense will be fine next year. how do i know this? Because Baker’s done this a million times before and the only OC who he couldn’t get a better job was McAdoo. Whoever takes over next year will have a top 5 qb, mike evans, jmac and hopefully CG, bucky and a sturdy offensive line which can be improved, plus a defense that’ll be healthier with some improved pieces to keep the other offense off the field.

  42. View from 132 Says:

It should be tampering to interview playoff coaches.

  43. sunny Says:

the talk about how bad the offense was today is annoying. they got the ball THREE TIMES in the first half. they scored on two of those drives. they scored a td in the opening drive of the second half. they only punted twice in the whole game.

the biggest issue with the offense today was (as usual) the DEFENSE. they couldnt get off the field and left the offense sitting on the bench for long stretches. kind of hard to build any momentum like that.

  44. Colonel Angus Says:

Agree with the sh!tty a d s. Makes it difficult. Still love the site so don’t get all butthurt.

  45. Buckybucs Says:

They were able to replace Canles and not like Liam was an obvious pick. Bowles knows what to look for in an oc they will be fine if he goes. I think Coen gets interviews but he won’t be picked over Ben Johnson. If he gets a job it is because Ben declined that team and already made decisions.

  46. Waterboy Says:

@Gipper, so why couldn’t the offense sustain drives and keep the defense off the field on those 3 drives in the first half? The offense is the strength of the team right??

  47. Waterboy Says:

Defense is playing with 3rd, 4th and 5th string guys in the secondary and guys they picked up off the streets a few weeks back who can’t even stay healthy but still gave the offense a shot to win it today and against Dallas several weeks ago.

  48. Jw94buc Says:

Learning from a win is a lot better than learning from a loss. The guy is in his first year with a new team far exceeding expectations. Keep Liam go get Myles Garrett for a pass rush and fills some needs as well. Take the best players in the draft.

  49. Saskbucs Says:

Bucs Anthem… you should read past the first sentence. I’m on your team here. That whole post was about Bowles bringing down a champ caliber roster…

  50. Saskbucs Says:

Thataintright… the offense is currently good enough to win the SB. It’s top 5 in almost every metric.

My whole argument is that Licht will add a bunch of pieces to the D this offseason and it should have more talent to work with but Bowles will still run soft zones and get carved. He refuses to adapt his scheme, McCourty and Simms were just lighting him up for not tailoring his D to stop the offense best weapon (Lamb cough, Thielen)

  51. TheShaz Says:

Coen would be wise to let the Patriots string some losing seasons and high draft picks. They will be a Head Coach Carousel for a while.

The Brady/Belichick years got the fan base craving for a winner and will not allow a team to build.

  52. BucsBucsBucs!! Says:

    We need to keep Coen
