Liam Coen Screwing With Linebackers’ Heads

January 2nd, 2025

Former NFL lineman likes.

OK, no Bucs fan wants Liam Coen to leave Tampa Bay. But Joe wouldn’t blame the man for chasing his professional dream.

Some NFL analysts rave about how Coen schemes guys open or schemes open spaces for running backs to blast through. Here is an example:

Former NFL offensive lineman and current NFL Network talking head Brian Baldinger does a wonderful job on Twitter breaking down plays for guys like to Joe to inhale. Fun stuff.

Below, Coen has Rachaad White lined up behind Tristan Wirfs and Ben Bredeson. He has Bucky Irving lined up behind Cody Mauch and Luke Goedeke.

In this play with Baker Mayfield in shotgun, everybody is on a crossing pattern. White runs behind Wirfs and Bredeson who are pulling right. Irving cuts left with Graham Barton, Mauch and Goedeke slicing to the left.

Both White and Irving cross in front of Mayfield.

Who is going where? Who is getting the ball?

Baldinger just loves this play design. If not for a diving D.J. Wonnum, who trips up Bucky for a seven-yard gain, who knows how far that play would have gone?

Baldinger is impressed.

“There is a moment of indecision at that mesh,” Baldinger said of the Stinking Panthers’ defense. “It’s not easy on the defense.”

When you have a good offensive line and a good running back, all it sometimes takes is for the defense to freeze, if but for an instant, for a guy like Bucky to take advantage.

All because of how Coen designs a simple run play.

If the Bucs let a good OC leave the building to keep a subpar HC/DC, I’ll be p!ssed.

“”If the Bucs let a good OC leave the building to keep a subpar HC/DC, I’ll be p!ssed.””

I’d say 90% of Buc fans agree with that. Including me.

    @Joe in Michigan,

Exactly. We cannot let that happen again. We let Mike Tomlin walk when he would have been a good HC for us. We may averted the lost decade. If Todd Bowles sneezes wrong, he needs to get the ax in order to keep Liam, let alone all the defensive-guru melt downs.

  5. FrontFour Says:

Great post, Joe. Helps to actually see what’s going on. Baldinger is straight up, no none sense guy.

Who has the ball, Bucky does! Love it. Great breakdown by Baldinger. Great design by Liam.

  7. HC Grover Says:

We will rue the day they let him get away.

I haven’t been able to watch your links lately Joe.
    Maybe because of my VPN???

With Baker Coen can win right now
He knows what he has with Baker, OL, RB and TE
And he knows we can refresh the D talent this coming draft to amp up the pass rush, helping time of posession and field posession

In New England he can be the unquestioned guy
Create the culture that he wants
    Get all of the credit
Live in the part of the country he grew up in
Not have to worry about his family during storm seasons that are more severe and longer with 100 degree Gulf temps thanks to global warming

Not be certain whether the pieces they have, and the draft pieces they will add next year or two, and the FAs they’ll add to try to accelerate the process, will hit out of the gate, or more likely it will take two attempts to get the players and the culture and system buy-in just right

Either way he’s going to make a fortune. I could see him telling his wife the path is less certain but they will be fine financially forever, he wants to go to NE and chase his dream and it will be better for their family LT.

Of course I have no idea what I’m talking about

  12. Fred McNeil Says:

The problem with Bowles is that he is either great not terrible. Or maybe he’s both great and terrible at the same time like Schrodinger’s cat. You can never know which till you turn on your box on Sunday.

The clock is ticking. Whatever it takes. Get it done.

You and MF Buc have to be obsessed with the horrors of Wokeness to find it on the back of pro football helmets.

Keep Coen he already knows the team and he will build what is needed . Boowles retires in another year and Coen gets promoted to head coach .

    @Buccoarnie

I know! I have to put painters tape about a third up from the bottom of my screen so if they show closeups of players from behind that I cant see that woke crap. Makes watching plays on that side a little hard but worth it!
