Liam Coen Said Baker Mayfield Is Locked In To Rock Sunday Night

January 10th, 2025

Focused.

Liam Coen can feel it. And it’s not because he had too many onions on his cheesesteak.

Yesterday the Bucs’ savvy offensive coordinator was asked how he can rein in his quarterback, Baker Mayfield, from maybe being too stoked for a game.

Coen doesn’t want to. In fact, Coen said Mayfield is fully dialed in as the Bucs prep for the Commandos to kick off the postseason Sunday night at The Licht House.

“He was pretty intense the last few days,” Coen said with a smile. “That’s a good thing, I think, when he’s truly like he is in terms of asking questions quickly, [being] on it.

“You can feel it, just the way he was throwing the ball in a walk-through where we’re not supposed to be throwing the ball, or just when we’re doing some jog-through stuff out here. He wants to go full speed.

“That’s a good thing – to get him going. His mindset is in the right place. How do we kind of hold that in a little bit as we get towards Sunday night?”

Joe sure hopes that attitude rubs off on the rest of the Bucs. If Mayfield is chomping at the bit, Joe hopes the rest of his teammates are, too.

Then, let loose so much that the Commandos won’t even be in the mood for Tulum next week.

Looking forward to seeing Baker in action Sunday night. Hopefully, he takes a little heat of those early 90 MPH fastballs he throws out of the gate.

  2. Yar Says:

Hand it to Bucky, pass it to Mike.

  3. Bucfan Says:

Now if Bowles has the defense ready to play in the FIRST half!

  4. ocala Says:

I am not worried about the offense. They have been great all year. The Bucs defense has been putrid the whole year so I am hoping they can be an average NFL defense. If they do that the Bucs will win.

  5. gbobucsfan Says:

Hopefully the Def feels the same way !!

  6. Gipper Says:

Can’t afford anymore of those long clock eating drives that Bucs defense is so good at providing opponents.

  7. Ds Says:

    Run the ball early please

  8. Todd Says:

You know…I think with all the recent games leading up to Mike Evans’ 1000 yards, there was this silent pressure haunting the team. Everyone. Mike’s record meant so much. So, certain plays and passes were perhaps forced.

Sunday night? That pressure is not present.

Everyone will be dialed in to just “do their jobs” and execute to what Washington’s defense gives the Bucs.

The byproduct, I predict, will be the best offensive performance of the year.

Said performance will be the talk of the NFL going into next weekend’s championship game.

Which, on queue, the Bucs will likely choke like they have after every arse-whoopin’ this year.

    Thoughts?

  9. Jeff Says:

    Commanders 27 Bucs 24.

  10. Pewter Power Says:

Who’s the baker mayfield of the defense, they need one desperately because i only hear about lvd getting fired up in the locker room at halftime when they are getting shredded. Kj Britt only has a big mouth in training camp.

  11. Allen Lofton Says:

Agreed, Mike Evans lefts a big burden off the Bucs. Now they just concentrate one game at a time. They can’t be in next week’s game if they fail to concentrate on solely Washington. It’s Do or Die.

  12. Hail2dabucs Says:

Thoughts you ask todd ? Here’s one I want you to go take a hard look at the NFL & how the schedule is . You are shorting us fans of the whole divisional rounds of the playoffs . My thoughs on the bucs is like most and what they can see . The defense has got to be locked in & do their job . Not real worried about the offense. We all know todd is going to blitz , we need to spy JD all game and force turnovers !

    Commanders 27 Bucs 24.

Jeff based on the most recent predictions you have made, this one is worthless as all the others. Go Troll else where.

  14. Casual Observer Says:

Bucfan has it so right. Maybe pretend (mindset) that the beginning of the game is the start of the second half. Got to play well in the first half – for a change.

  15. Steven007 Says:

Todd, I agree with your overall evaluation about the last few games. I felt the same way.

Jeff, thanks (?) for adding nothing to the conversation as usual.

  16. stpetebucsfan Says:

Compliments to one or both of you JJoes.

You can tell me if BOTH you are the clever writers?

“And it’s not because he had too many onions on his cheesesteak.

I find the humorous metaphors, similes, etc entertaining. Only so many ways to make stats and dry info entertaining and you guy(s) frequently add some needed humor. THX

  17. stpetebucsfan Says:

I think Baker was born “locked in”. Dude is just intense. I like intense!

  18. BakerTillIDie Says:

Okay. 1st off. Bucs Have had a great season. top 5 in every category, offensively. with injuries, without godwin. Defensively, not our best, but injuries have been a who? in secondary most of the season. winfield back, dean probally back. JD, while good for a rookie, as long as we contain, 3 pick day. 50 yards rushing. baker 250, 3 tds. irving 130, 2 tds

  19. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Todd

I think you made an excellent point. ME13’s record grew heavier and heavier as the season wore on especially in light of ME13’s injury.

I think the “pressure” on Dangerfield has lifted as well. Yeah it’s been a little more exciting than many here appreciate but for the second year in a row the Bucs have snatched victory from the abyss of falling so far behind and leaving NO margin for error.

Too exciting for many and so blame Dangerfield. But if you BLAME him for the early losses do you not have to CREDIT him for the amazing win streaks and comebacks the past two seasons.

Of course not it’s Dangerfield and so for many here style points matter enormously. For me AGAIN…after it’s all said an done and there handing out titles the NEVER ask HOW…just HOW MANY!!!

  20. New Fan Land Says:

People have always talked about Baker getting too excited in big games, but he has never been blown out in the playoffs, and as his maturity and confidence grows, he’ll only continue improving.

  21. Ralphie Says:

I think it’s “champing at the bit” not chomping.

  22. JustVisiting Says:

Talent is a gift, but intensity is a choice. Go, Bucs!

  23. Bucks 'n' Bucs Says:

Stpete….. I almost always enjoy your comments. Your insight is intelligent and elegant. But (there’s always a but) your continued use of nicknames is pathetic. Perhaps you’re related to Munch. Always trying to get your silliness to catch on. We all understood your reference to Rodney Dangerfield the first time.

  24. Bucs-N-Bucks Says:

Mayfield is always locked in and functions. the goal is to actually let things progress and not to force it. Sometimes he tries too much. I don’t blame him for his fastballs, I expect the receivers to learn to catch them in practice, so they are not surprised in games. Also, try to catch the receivers in stride instead of slightly behind them. small things to work on but Baker is NOT the problem. Oh and no more cute running plays for Mayfield, he’s not a RB. if things break down, fine let him rip but no designed runs please. embarrassing.

Start with Bucky but don’t overdo. Throw to Rashaad. He does well with catch and run. tucker needs some love too.

Defense: can’t help there. try to strip Daniels and hit him hard (legally). He turns his back, and I worry opens his body up for hard hits that might hurt his long-term career due to back injury.

  25. Woodenman Says:

Jeff when will you learn every time you make a prediction it is wrong. Should be more of the same.

  26. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Buck N Bucs

I accept your criticism and you are correct. I’ll ditch Dangerfield.

Besides some of these people are NEVER going to change their opinion anyway.

I find the disrespect irritating but if we win the SB and it continues then I’ll grow pissssed. The goal of any NFL HC is to win a SB. If Todd does that and people still wish to diminish his efforts then the “Buc fan” in me will really come out.

  27. Bucorama76 Says:

We have out preformed all expectations this year. Bucky has been fabulous and the back I thought he would be. Backer has matured more but still has to many interceptions. This is due to that 100 mph playspeed he has always had. Mike Evans, nothing needs to be said! The O line top notch, way improved Even if the Commanders win, as Buc fans, we should be proud of what we did this year. We beat head to head most of the NFC complement already.
With all that said, I personally will be disappointed with a first or second round out. This team has the talent and sprit to make it the the NFC championship game or beyond. As long as the defense does not give it away. Play second half coverage scheme in the first half. Please don’t give the rookie a chance to get going d-backs on the line and no soft zone. Go Bucs!
