Liam Coen Not Among “Names To Watch” For Jaguars Opening

January 17th, 2025

Bucs playcaller Liam Coen.

Now this got Joe to ask for another draft beer at Hooters.

NFL Network, of course, is covering the array of NFL head coaching openings as if it’s a presidential primary.

Bucs fans are paying attention because Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Liam Coen interviewed for the Jacksonville head coaching job. He’s the young architect of the Bucs’ top-5 offense.

Tonight, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport shared a report on X updating the Cowboys and Jaguars head coaching searches.

Per Rapoport, Jacksonville has now interviewed eight candidates and Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson are “names to watch.” He said “both are considered to be very high up as to where the Jaguars go and what we like.”

Hey, Coen wasn’t mentioned. Joe liked the sound of that.

There have been no reports of Coen interviewing with other teams. Former Bucs offensive coordinator and current Ravens playcaller Todd Monken also is in the Jacksonville mix.

Stay brother. You will get paid well. Family can enjoy another year here. See where things go. Stability. You’re time is gonna come.

  2. Lightningvinny Says:

Stay 1 or 2 more years and replace Bowles when he retires

  3. firethecannons Says:

wow would love to have Liam Coen as our head coach and Aaron Glenn as our DC pls football God make that happen

  4. Tbbucs3 Says:

Why would he be? Clearly not ready to be an HC after he fizzled out the last few games….

His offense couldnt even execute a handoff

  5. firethecannons Says:

Todd Monken has many years of excellence so theres that.

  6. OrlandoBucsFan Says:

Give Coen a raise. New contract that states he’ll take over the Bucs . ( like New England did with mayo)

  7. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Per Bill Belichick, 8x Super Bowl-winning Coach:

“They fumble a handoff on a jet sweep-action play. That really didn’t have anything to do with the defense. Then they [butcher] another short-yardage play and screw up the handoff, get stopped, and end up settling for a field goal. That didn’t have anything to do with Washington’s defense. It was just bad football.”

Per Jon Gruden, Super Bowl Champion (XXXVII):

“I’m just disgusted. As you said, failing to hand the ball off on your own 12-yard line—you deserve to lose. Then it’s 3rd and 1, you try to get tricky with some kind of hard count, you lose four yards, and it costs you another four points. Horrible.”

Per Dave Wannstedt, Super Bowl Champion (XXVII):

“I need to see these guys, you know—experienced coordinators over the years—so I can evaluate how they handle these situations. Liam Coen? I was disappointed at the end of that Tampa Bay game. You do a snap count—that should never happen. There were a couple of things in that game that stood out to me, and honestly, they make me nervous. It shows inexperience from my point of view.”

  8. sue moore Says:

WE LOVE YOU LIAM!! Need a raise!!!

  9. Not Again Says:

Fire Todd and his bottom 3 defense.

Liam to HC with his top 3 offense.

  10. Not Again Says:

Liam in his 1st year created magic.

Todd in his 40th year made a big doo doo defense

  11. adam from ny Says:

maybe coen went there and told shaheed shaka khan to take this swampland and shove it 🙂 heehaa

  12. GoneGator Says:

    Fire Liam now!
Just trying to add some balance – lol.

  13. RagingBrisket Says:

Coen would probably be successful in Chicago

  14. Jeffrey Becker Says:

might as well stay now that Tyreek Hill is coming to Tampa

  15. Ha-Ha-Ha Says:

    It’s a win-win for the Buccaneers.
If he stays and has good offense, that’s a win for for the team.
If he goes some place else, Todd will have his pick of up and coming
offensive play callers. The offense is proven, Todd doesn’t out shine the OC,
and the last two immediately jumped to head coach.
    Even Leftwitch is getting interest.

  16. Dick LeBeau Jr. Says:

So let me get this straight, it’s Coen’s fault for the fumble? Make it make sense. Yeah, it was being too cute at maybe not the best spot on the field, but he didn’t fumble the ball. So this one game was supposed to define a full season of work? That’s not how it goes at all. Canales got a gig with less success, along with many other coordinators. Let’s keep it real. And no, I don’t want him to leave. It’s only up from here with the offense.

  17. BallHawk75 Says:

How many of Todd’s defensive coaches are being considered for DC or HC on other teams?

Perhaps there’s a Swiss cheese factory in need of workers.

    Fire Bowles now!

  18. Simeon4HOF Says:

He’ll be staying put. Give him a raise Glazers.
    Step #1 Accomplished

Step #2 LVD and Chris Godwin

  19. FortMyersDave Says:

I hope he stays, but the problem with the Jags is that it is not a prime landing spot for the A-list coaching candidates with their owner-GM dynamic and the fact they will not be playing homes game in Jacksonville once the Gator Bowl renovation starts. My fear is that the Monkens and Ben Johnsons of the coaching world will turn down the Jags and then they go to their B and C list…..

  20. Jacob Says:

It’s too soon for Coen to get a HC job. He’s not nearly as experienced as Canales. He’ll have to prove it for another year at least. I have a feeling that he isn’t a great interview either….Coen seems like a strange guy a little bit. But he sure seems to know how to run an offense.

  21. Pewter Power Says:

If Coen stays they definitely won’t make a changes at head coach which means after free agency spending and heavy draft attention to the defense Bowles will still have one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL because in a passing league nothing is more important to him than stopping the run

  22. Todd Says:

Liam was interviewed simply to satisfy the McRooney Rule. Had to check that box. We’re good.

  23. GoneGator Says:

Last 8 games incl playoff game.
TODDS DEFENSE GAVE UP 17.75 PPG <—- This what you call a fact.

How many teams defensively are/have been better than that?

With glaring holes talent-wise and tons of injuries in key defensive positions.

The defense has had it's struggles, nobodies denying that, but some people have an obvious double standard when it comes to judging him. You're not even trying to see things objectively 🙁

  24. Buddha Says:

Odd how little our fans know about coaching.Liam is not ready. He knows it. Licht knowe it. Jags know it. Glad he will be back.

  25. BakerBucs says Says:

    Ttbucs u r a genuine creep!

  26. BakerBucs says Says:

OMG the people on this site r a total bunch of jackasses no joke

  27. Pewter Power Says:

Ben Johnson has interviewed for 2-3 years and he’s such a first time overqualified head coach that every interview was a job offer he turned down and not the other way around. He didn’t forget how to lead men or interact with players obviously by the offense he ran. Maybe his demeanor is not what they want and he’s not a good fit for what they need. If you haven’t listened to his press conferences you should and based on that alone me personally i would definitely prefer him over Bowles some may not but that’s the way it works right

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

You people are insane. Why should he get a raise or additional promises??? No one wants him. He’s going nowhere. He did his job…and he got paid for it.

  29. FlBoy84 Says:

Not sure what level of interest Coen has in the Jags job, if any, but it’s irrelavant because his goal is to evetually be a HC. Starting out you take any HC interview that’s offered, if for nothing more than to learn how the process works & to improve your interview skills. It’s basically the same as going out into the business world after finishing your degree, etc.. If you decide it’s not the right fit, you just remove your name from consideration after gaining valuable knowledge that will serve you later, while also getting a few nice free meals outta the deal lol.

  30. heyjude Says:

Great intel, Joe. Ben Johnson’s name seems to be trending. Things are really getting interesting.

Similar to what others have commented, I am thinking it’s too early for Coen to be a HC after one year as OC too. The Jags and other teams may be thinking the same. But you never know. Give Coen a couple more years as OC, see how he does, and then go from there. It’s a win-win for the Bucs.

  31. Bucs Guy³ Says:

I know the Buc D looked good at the end of the year against the Chargers and OK against Washington, but look at who else they played — bottom feeders in the Giants, Raiders Saints, Panthers x 2 and Cowboys. And they didn’t look good against Dallas. The best of these teams was 7-10. That’s why they’re all picking 12th or earlier in the draft. Bottom third. Our defensive philosophy and execution needs to get better if we want to have any true aspirations of a SB next year.

  32. Bucs Guy³ Says:

How did the Bucs D look against the good or above .500 teams?
    Horrible: Baltimore, Denver
Not good: KC, Atl x 2, SF
    Good: Detroit, Philly
    Great: Chargers, Washington (season opener)
With the exception of LAC, our good and great D games were in the first quarter of the season. Why? Health of the D? Other team’s caught up as the season went along? Mistakes due to poor execution and communication? Probably a little of each.

  33. Bucs Guy Says:

Buc D looked better at the end of the year because they were playing teams in the bottom third.withe exception of LAC.

  34. Bucs Guy Says:

Look at the D against .500 or better teams
    Horrible: Baltimore, Denver
Not good: KC, ATL x 2, SF
    Good: Philly
Great: Detroit, Washington (season opener), LAC

Good at the beginning of the year. Why?
    Health?
The rest of the league caught up?
    Poor execution and communication?
    Probably some of each.

  35. Hodad Says:

Here’s something to chew on. The Raiders hire Spytek as G.M., he hires Coen to be his head coach, then signs Trask as his Q.B.! Coen has a young, 6′ 5″ 230 lb QB who knows his system on a cheap deal. Raiders get good quick. We lose Coen, stick with Bowles, and watch our defense get worse. Our new coaching search starts in 2026.

  36. Allbuccedup Says:

I did not think Canales would get hired as head coach and he did so don’t believe some of this gibberish you hear on these sport talk shows.

  37. BucVoyager Says:

Trask sucks. No new GM or coach is going to put their new team in the hands of a scrub.

  38. Beeej Says:

I don’t think I’d even call that a fumble–Baker turned around to hand the ball off and Jmac had nearly passed him by, and his hip ran into the ball–timing was off

“17.75 ppg” True, but we allowed them 69 plays (to our 44) they were OVER 50% on third down conversions, OVER 50% on FOURTH down conversions. We threw the ball to Mike 9 times (he caught it 9 times) THAT was 20% of our offensive plays

  39. Marky mark Says:

Save the trick plays for midfield to the opposition 20

  40. Aqualung Says:

Penalties. Unforced errors. Fumbles. Horrible execution. Terrible situational play calls. Overly cute crap. And working for a head coach who doesn’t know why his defense plays poorly against the pass, or whether his best defensive player was 100%. Liam performed his way right out of a head coaching job with the slop he tolerated, or caused.

Glad we still have him but he has to learn from the mistakes and coach better during the week. We know the defensive side of the ball isn’t going to change until we get a real defensive coordinator and let Bowles focus on culture and player relationships.

  41. Marky mark Says:

Spytek could raid the Bucs pun intended.

  42. Marky mark Says:

Why wouldn’t Jmac slow down and wait for Baker to turn around.

  43. Aqualung Says:

Marky mark – cokes down to preparation and practice. Lack of situational awareness. That was a bad call in that situation. Unnecessarily risky and then Bake and JMac proved they weren’t prepared enough. Horrible. JMac really played like a dear in the headlights all game, like a raw rookie.

    Coaching.

  44. Badbucs Says:

It was a great play call that would have gone for 30 yards. Rookie mucked up the timing. Not a Commander in site on that side of the field. Blame still falls on Liam for choosing the player but half a second difference and he’s a hero. I can’t believe the nit picking. We made too many mistakes and they didn’t. Team not quite ready for playoff football. One more off-season draft and FAs may do it. Sure hope Liam is back. One more year for Bowles to prove it.. go Bucs!!

  45. Chrisonthecape Says:

That 2nd and 1 qb sneak call in the red zone sealed his fate.

  46. Tbbucs3 Says:

The Liam Coen fan boys are delusional…..

The guy has potential, but the reality is that he was a bad OC down the stretch (potentially cost the Bucs a game this weekend) but that wont stop fans from acting like he’s the next coming of Bill Walsh after one season.

  47. GoneGator Says:

    @Beej
17.75 is against 8 last opponents.

Regarding Washington, this has been covered. We held them on 4th twice. Arguably better than a punt.
We had equal opportunities with the ball. We had equal possessions. The OFFENSE HAS to take some responsibility.
The defense can’t give them drives or gain yards for them. Defense doesn’t select plays or execute them on offense.

Coen would probably be successful in Chicago

No way. Chicago is a bit shell shocked with newbie coordinators as a HC. If the do go for a boy wonder, rather than a retread HC, it will be the guy they have faced 2x/yr, Ben Johnson.

  49. ChiBuc Says:

While Canales motivated his talent depleted team to some competitive play, I think he serves as a cautionary tale on hiring a 1st time one year coordinator with a small body of work to be your chief operating executive to run your billion dollar franchise. Most owners want a lil salt/seasoning on that meat before they bite

  50. Aqualung Says:

The head coach has to be held accountable for the repeated failures. He won’t be.

  51. TBfan Says:

See lions /Washington game …I rest my case counselor. We got beat by an excellent team. 2025 and beyond will be fun boys.

  52. Theycallmebruce Says:

Everyone coming up with different reasons why the Bucs got beat by Washington. Has anyone considered maybe Washington is actually a really really good team. I wonder how the Lions fans feel right now. And I wonder how the lions themselves feel right now Maybe the Bucs just got beat by a really good team and the Bucs gave them all they could handle. Considering all the previous previously talked about issues with the Bucs this year, I’m actually looking forward to next year.
