Liam Coen Discusses How Bucs Offense Has Evolved
January 11th, 2025The past few days, the old cliché about running in the playoffs leads to playoff wins was spoken quite a bit.
Bucs coach Todd Bowles was on that bandwagon yesterday.
Thursday, Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen suggested that the offense evolved and helped lead the team to the playoffs because the Bucs became really good at running the ball.
“You look at how we’ve adapted,” Coen began. “We’ve gotten better in the run game. When it really, truly matters is now: in [January], when we’ve got to run the football, when you’ve got to stop the run and all of those things.
“Can you do it versus meaningful opponents in a playoff atmosphere? Can you go run the ball the way you’re supposed to and the way we want to? That’s got to be a key to success for us in this [Washington] game, for sure.”
Joe thinks the Bucs can run the ball on successful teams.
A lot of folks mock the Bucs for feasting on a cake schedule after the bye with only one winning team. OK, Joe gets it. But that one winning team the Bucs beat (on the road) is playing this afternoon in the playoffs, the Chargers. And the Chargers have a good defense.
The Bucs ran all over their arses so much the Chargers had Bucky Irving’s cleat marks all over their faces and backsides.
The problem with the Bucs is Joe doesn’t know which team will show up from week to week. Will it be the team that beat Detroit, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and took the Chiefs to overtime on the road, or will it be the team that gagged to Dallas and Atlanta (both on the road) and had to huff and puff their way to a division title-clinching win over the slimy Saints late?

Bucky, Tucker and White. In that order please.

Not worried about Coen, and the offense. I’m worried about Todd’s soft zone, drop OLBs into coverage defence against a QB that can exploit it. A defence that rarely forces a turnover. A defense that allows below average QBs to eat clock with easy completions. Between Daniels accurcy, and his gifted ability to run, I don’t see Todd’s D holding up. This game is going to come down to our defence getting stops, and hopefully turnovers. I don’t see it happening.

A Jekyll and Hyde team this year. A team that typically struggles in primetime. Can the DEFENSE get off to a fast start vs Daniels? Can the defense get a turnover, maybe even a rare pick? LFG!

I think Baker is locked in, and when he’s locked in, we win!

A lot of run game is a double bonus. I keeps Daniels on the bench and Todd’s D off the field.

I’d take this offense against any defense this year. It’s only the defense I’m concerned about. Bucs are going to have to win with a strong run game and ball control to keep their defense off the field. No turnovers and efficient offense is the only way they will be successful

No rookie QB has won a playoff game in 12 years-That ain’t changing now.

Saints were emptying the tank, Division 👏 Games 👏 aren’t 👏 easy . Stop acting like the Bucs having trouble with a Division opponent makes them a bad team…. ffs smh. Anyone remember how the Pat’s had a hard time with the Stinky fish all those years?

Getting back key players from injuries can make a huge difference towards a 🚶♂️ off victory on Sunday.
I’m sure Coen will scheme Evan open against Lattimore. I believe the Bucs have a legit chance of a statement win. Getting back some key defensive players will be the difference maker.

And then was the Cowboy turd sandwich.
On any given Sunday, this Buc team can lay a turd log.
I just hope it is not this Sunday, and the Bucs make Daniel’s look like Cooper Rush.

A good running attack breaks the Defense’s spirit quickly. When they keep pounding the ball and gashing for 4, 6 and 10 yards, the Defenses then become vulnerable to the pass.
Running = less holding penalties.
Running = more clock being used.
This team is a running team.
Run Bucky. Run Sean. Run White. Run right. Run left.

And the Redskins are the 3rd worst Run Defense in the NFL.

Come on Joe. You know the Buccaneers did not gag in Atlanta. Referees missed the face mask call that would have ended the game.

@JBF…truth, this team is bipolar.
Truly remarkable what we did at the beginning of the season, to play Detroit at full-strength in their house and beat them, and that’s giving up 4.5 sacks to Hutchinson, don’t know how we still won that game.
I think for Tampa to make a deep run in the playoffs it will all be about match ups. I don’t like the Vikings or a healthy Eagles team. I think the Rams are a problem because Stafford is too smart against the Blitz. Amazing the best team in the NFC is the Lions and out of all the teams left, they scare me the least, there’s something about how we matchup against them. Even in our losses to them, they have yet to blow the doors off of us.

Geez let me see if I understand this?
A team in dramatic turnover, full of young kids (rookies and 2nd yr guys) are thrown into the fire after a rash of horrible injuries takes out the 2nd best receiver (could be first on a team without an HOF on the other side) who is playing the best football of his career, a safety, the final eraser on the D and is talented enough to be the highest paid at his position, a fragile starting DB with talent Dean…
So tons of kids contributing, a lack of consistent lineup on the D side of the ball and goooollley…they produce inconsistent results!
I’m stunned I tell you! Next thing you know they’re going to tell me there’s gambling at the Hard Rock!

When you’re trying to run the clock out at the end of the game, and the other team is desperate to get the ball back, and they KNOW you’re gonna run between the tackles, and you’re STILL getting first downs…. THAT is a good running game
