Larry Foote Won’t Leave For Detroit DC Job

January 26th, 2025

The shakeup coming to Todd Bowles’ defensive staff seems like it will be limited.

Yes, defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers bolted for the Lions (better job security or better pay, or both?). Rodgers worked with Lions head coach Dan Campbell in Miami.

Bucs inside linebackers coach/pass defense coordinator Larry Foote, who had been on Bowles’ staff since 2019, interviewed for Lions’ defensive coordinator vacancy but did not get the job. The Lions promoted from within, per reports out of Detroit.

Joe has heard change in the ranks of Bucs defensive coaches will not be widespread.

Of course, that could shift if Bowles finds someone he thinks is special and, presumably, if the budget to replace Liam Coen is not a bank-breaker.

  1. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

The budget for a new OC should NOT be that expensive. especially when the Bucs have been churning out HCs the following year. Unless of course they do ANY flirting with Lincoln Riley.

  2. BallHawk75 Says:

    Keep that band together.

I just love forcing zero punts to a rookie QB at home in prime time.

    28-27

    Fire Bowles now!!!!

  3. Buckit Says:

He was terrible in both of his areas of responsibility. Nor surprisingly and unfortunately for the Bucs, the Lions did not want him

  4. Buckit Says:

    Not surprisingly

  5. Bucben1961 Says:

Looking like there will be very little change on that side of the ball. It’s so much fun watching 300 lb. lineman dropping into cover 2…smh

  6. Confido75 Says:

Ok, he won’t leave, but Bowles won’t make him DC for the Bucs because his fragile ego won’t allow it. If I was Foote, I would run. There is no opportunity on this team for you my friend.

  7. Pahpahmike Says:

Just me now, it looks like if Bowles don’t tweak or improve his defense, it will not only be changes on defense but there will be a change at HC regardless of what happens with the offense

  8. Kgh4life Says:

There should be a shake up. That side of the ball has been terrible.

  9. Buddha Says:

Extend Bowles now. He has done remarkably well given the circumstances.

  10. jimmy Says:

why did larry want to leave? doesnt he work for the bestest defensive guru in the galaxy in the place with the supergreat culture?

  11. gotbbucs Says:

Great, we’re returning the defensive pass game coordinator that oversees a historically bad defensive passing game.

  12. Permanently Moderated Says:

Don’t worry, jimmy. You’ll get your answer shortly.

  13. ATrain Says:

Lions pass on a man from Bowles staff NO WAY!!!

Nice title to article Word it like the guy chose to stay 😂

  14. orlbucfan Says:

I doubt Foote is crying over missing out on Detroit. Licht and Bowles are working as fast as they competently can to get the OC position filled. Then they can concentrate on the bigger job: Players for the 2025 season. At least, they’ve got experience dealing with the OC rollercoaster.

  15. jimmy Says:

the title of the post should have been “Larry Foote Won’t Leave”

is his contract up soon? or is he not responsible for any of the defensive debacle either.

  16. stpetebucsfan Says:

Todd Bowles 28-27…actually according the Pro football reference 27-24 .529

But never let the facts get in your way!

  17. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Foote, Ross and Rapone needed to go. Their horrendous defense speaks for itself.

  18. Day 1-76 Says:

Bowles has a great plan… Keep everything the same but expect different results.

  19. John Says:

Incredible. So the majority of the buccaneers defensive woes came on linebacker and secondary play. So hell yeah let’s keep the guy that’s responsible for the part of our defense that played the worst this year… That makes a lot of sense. The bucks defensive line has done a great job over these past several years stopping the run. Our secondary and linebacker play has stunk. So let’s be really smart here: let the defensive line coach leave and keep the coach from the areas that were the weakest part of our defense.
    Real head scratcher there

  20. Hearty Dikerson Says:

Way to evolve Todd. Don’t change a single thing with your terrible defensive staff unless you’re forced to. The awful George Edwards, Ross, Rapone all returning.

But don’t worry, after 6 years together I’m sure they’ll start to figure it out. They’ll coach it better.

Groundhog Year with Todd at the helm.

  21. Jeff Says:

The good Bucs D coaches will leave because Bowles won’t adapt his ancient scheme. Bucs really should have fired Bowles. Huge Glazers Mistake.

  22. RBUC Says:

The REAL secret sauce to better play on the defense is Glazers checkbook in free agency PLUS savvy draft pick selections!! THE COACHES CANT MAKE PLAYERS BE BIG TIME IF THEY DONT HAVE IT!!! For all U critics name the player that left Tampa and blew up as a great player elsewhere!!!! PLZZZ NAME ONE PLZZZ

  23. Davenport Says:

So, weeks into the offseason, there’s been no improvement in defensive coaching staff and we’ve lost an excellent OC.

What would make anyone believe we’re heading in the right direction?

By being the epitome of mediocre,Todd Bowles is crippling this franchise. There is no way to get better with him as HC.

I cannot believe the Glazers are content to be wasting the remaining prime years of Evans, Mayfield, Wirf, etc.

  24. Gipper Says:

Higher a OC this week or promote from within. Not worried about the offense at all. More concerned that the O Line is well coached and continues to develop.

All focus needs to be on rebuilding the defense. It is going to take at least 5 new players. Changing scheme won’t fix bad tackling, lack of speed, and player confusion. With the right players, Bucs should play classic 4-3 defense. They need a MLB who can play sideline to sideline and pass cover the middle. Top priority is a proven EDGE. This will be a force multiplier for Kancey and Vea.

  25. Gipper Says:

    Hire

  26. Aqualung Says:

Well, we should let the new Defensive Coordinator have his say over who is on the staff. Someone that knows modern pass defense would be better qualified to help fix the holes in the defense, particularly what and how they practice. That way Coach Bowles could focus on all the details that have gone languishing, especially tightening up the self inflicted wounds in all three phases. It’s boring and tedious, but it’s what the great ones do. Relentless repetition. And maybe add the Tuesday practice back in after a loss, especially.

  27. RuKa_44 Says:

Should we be happy that the Pass Defense Coordinator of one of the worse pass defenses in the league over the last few years is staying?
Am I the only one secretly hoping the Lions would take him?

  28. Allbuccedup Says:

He will probably end up in Pittsburgh eventually. If the Bucs let him go or the Steelers linebackers coach gets fired which is a real possibility

  29. Woodman Says:

BallHawk you are not fooling any. DP

  30. Mac Says:

Why on Earth would you ever extend Bowles. Dumb comments. Like he is wanted by anyone else. Plus he said this is his last stop. Hopefully this season is his last. I’m over having a defensive minded coach who isn’t very good at his job!

  31. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Oh yeah our to notch pass defense is going to get even better now! Yeah team!

  32. Pewter Power Says:

Damn too bad that’s the one guy I wanted to leave but at least that dumb co coordinator title is over

  33. BAKERSBucs says Says:

I think Foote wud say the something bout alot of people posting on this site.I bet they won’t leave, cause way to many of u suck!

  34. Hodad Says:

You either get better, or you get worse. Keeping coaches no other team wants isn’t helping us get any better. One more season of Bowles. He doesn’t have Coen to save his bacon next season. Some of these coaches needed to be shown the door. Todd is to loyal, and Licht doesn’t have the chops to do what’s right, and fire some guys who’ve failed us.

  35. Will Says:

How can you blame anybody other than Todd for what goes on defense? Foote only coordinates what Todd tells him to do Larry has a great defensive mind and the players live him, but you do not know it because he doesn’t get a chance to call anything in Tampa Bay. He will not last long someone is going to get him and we will regret it when he is gone.

  36. Will Says:

How can you blame anybody other than Todd for what goes on with the defense? Foote only coordinates what Todd tells him to do. Larry has a great defensive mind he comes from The Dick Labough tree and the players love him, but we do not know it because he doesn’t get a chance to call anything in Tampa Bay. He will not last long someone is going to get him and we will regret it when he is gone.

  37. heyjude Says:

I am glad he is staying. Staying loyal and all in on the Bucs is the type of coaches we want and need right now.

  38. RBUC Says:

Ira said his source in the building said the organization marked 2025 when they were ready to push the chips to the middle of the table, seriously utilize resources to make a push for a Superbowl( which NEWS FLASH they didn’t do in 2024) I know gullible fans think every franchise is going for it every season and no one can tell them any different, I for one don’t think that’s the case! I just believe we as fans will know when the Buccaneers are serious and that’s when the Glazers,at the very beginning, of free agency target the best available in players REGARDLESS of price tag!!! Jimmys & Joes weigh more than Xs & Os!! Then ALL of a sudden the coaching looks SOO much better 🚩🏴‍☠️🚩🏈‼️

  39. Durango 95 Says:

Maybe realizing the looming devastation that was about to befall the team the Glazers stepped in and saved the day.

  40. Ed Says:

Tired of the lack of aggression, bad tackling and DB’s far away from the ball. Watching Eagles defense dominate on defense. Anyone from their defensive staff is an upgrade over our staff. They play tight, defend every inch of the field and hit people hard.

Tough to watch a Buc defense after watching Eagles.

  41. unbelievable Says:

Oh good, for a minute I was worried our pass defense might take a step forward next season…

  42. HC Grover Says:

Too bad, It needs a shake.

  43. Scott Says:

Weird for him to turn that down.

  44. Zoocomics Says:

Whoever continues to call for Bowles firing…guys just move on, I get free speech and all, but something many of you don’t realize by continuing to beat this same drum over and over again, is that you start to sound like a troll. This is water WAAAAY under the bridge at this point, and we’ve got Bowles for at least another season and we’re shopping for a new OC. Can just move onto that? I can’t imagine you’d want to spend your free time bitching about Bowles every day. We may actually look back on this moment and be grateful the Jags got him.

  45. Scott Says:

Oops I missed the part that they hired within. Makes sense. That was a good defense for being so depleted.

  46. Aqualung Says:

With Coach Bowles masterful situational football command, “make every scrub look like Dan Marino” defense, not to mention outstanding clock management, we are poised for a big Super Bowles run!

Can’t wait until next season when we are 4-7, after blowing a cluster of winnable games by cowardly decisions and self inflicted wounds to the face, it will be the signal we are ready for The Big Push.

Jason – time to extend Coach Bowles until he’s 75. This is awesome.

  47. Cometowin2 Says:

Should of kept Kacy. Only defensive coach that did a good job this year.

  48. adam from ny Says:

    a little shimmy and shake…

and a solid basically all defensive draft, and our DC should pull the ship together…

    players are needed

  49. GoneGator Says:

    Troll: noun
    Informal.
a person who posts inflammatory, inappropriate, controversial, or polarizing messages online for the purpose of cultivating animosity, upsetting others, or provoking a response.

For those who didn’t know 🙂

  50. GoneGator Says:

    Can’t define a term ?

  51. Aqualung Says:

    So is a defensive coordinator.

  52. Aqualung Says:

Arschloch- a good German word describing a certain ultra hypocritical and easily triggered troll.

  53. BoricuaBucFan Says:

    @Ballhawk75

You can’t possibly be that stupid can you? They literally went for it on every 4th down🤣

  54. IE Buc Says:

I think Larry Foote should be promoted to defensive coordinator. Give him the defensive play calling. Maybe Bowles improves as a HC without play calling duties, maybe not, but something has to improve with the defense. Even if Bowles sticks to calling plays, Foote should get a DC promotion.

  55. garro Says:

    Did he Pinky Swear?

We need Pinky Swears from all these guys yall!!!

    Go Bucs!

  56. heyjude Says:

garro – Too funny! Thanks for the laugh. Needed it after the Bills loss.

IE Buc – Agreed. Promote Foote. Maybe that is already happening.

  57. Aqualung Says:

It would appear from performance that Foote is failing to put the best Foote forward.

  58. Aqualung Says:

It would appear that Rodgers was the one to challenge St. Bowles and hence is no longer wanted in the genius’s realm.
