Keeping Bucs Assistants From Fleeing To Jacksonville

January 27th, 2025

“Hey Graham, you see any rumors about me on that iPad?”

Now that the dust has settled on Liam Coen bolting to Jacksonville, the next order of business for the Bucs is to keep the rest of the offensive coaches on staff. Maybe that’s just as important as finding a new offensive coordinator.

One guy the Bucs cannot afford to lose is offensive line coach Kevin Carberry. The guy has done a phenomenal job. That’s a big reason why the Bucs offense hummed this season.

Generally, if a guy has a chance for a promotion, teams don’t stand in his way. That’s why Joe is scared that Coen may pluck Carberry from the Bucs by giving him the offensive coordinator title with the Jags.

Sure, that’s an empty title because Carberry wouldn’t call plays. It would sort of be like what Chucky did with Bill Muir. Chucky called the plays. In reality, Muir was just the offensive line coach. But with the title of “offensive coordinator” Muir wasn’t going anywhere.

Of course, the Bucs could slap Carberry with the title of “associate head coach,” give him a pay raise for the hassle and be done with it.

Well, Jonathan Jones of CBS is of the mind Bucs fans won’t have to worry about that. He believes the Bucs, still sore how things shook down last week between the Jags and Coen, aren’t about to let any other assistant go to the Jags in the coming days unless Coen hires someone as a coordinator.

It is extremely unlikely Coen will be able to take any assistant coaches from Tampa with him to Jacksonville considering how things ended there. The Buccaneers can’t block any assistants from interviewing for a coordinator role, but they can block a lateral move.

The best way to save Carberry is to give him some highfalutin title (with a nice raise). It’s not like Carberry didn’t earn a raise. He did a helluva job.

Yup Yup and You freaking nailed it Joe!

I have no problem with a guy improving his income or job title Joe. However when it screws his old employer? I get nasty thoughts. I think this is one reason why corporate America has no compete clauses?

Doing the right thing simply because it is the right thing is a relic of the past it seems. Really tired of losing good people to other teams. Regardless.

    Go Bucs

  2. FortMyersDave Says:

So Liam can steal just one coach as his OC but I do have a question. Could Coen try to hire someone on the Bucs staff as his OC and then try to get another guy by “promoting” him to Asst. Head Coach? What about making an assistant position coach, say asst WR coach to full WR Coach. Is that a promotion? The rules seem vague and I am sure Coen is going to at least try and take coaches with him. Canales did, but they were guys the Bucs were happy to see go, this is different.

  3. Elite Vita Says:

The dust of the Coen loss (particularly how he did it) most might say, in my opinion, is not settled but more accurately is STILL settling.

  4. Permanently Moderated Says:

Theyā€™ll all be looking for new jobs in a couple of years, if they go to Jacksonville.

  5. Bucs Guy Says:

People aren’t upset Coen took the job/promotion. They’re upset with the manner in how he conducted himself in the situation. The lying, the ghosting and going back on his word.

  6. BucVoyager Says:

As a Bucs fan I hate the way he went about his business but $13 million a year is life changing. If someone gave me a 5X raise Iā€™d ghost my previous employer too.

  7. Thisisouryear!! Says:

Everyone says he ghosted the Bucs. To me 24 hours isnā€™t ghosting. Iā€™m crazy pleased if I get a response wi 24 hours most times.

Besides that, if itā€™s me, I havenā€™t fully made a decision. Iā€™m not ignoring you. Iā€™m trying to figure things out. Then his son got sick on top of everything.

  8. Hodad Says:

This is why I don’t understand why we don’t just promote Carberry, or Grizzard to O.C.? If we hire from outside isn’t that guy going want to bring in his own staff? Wouldn’t he want to have his own coaches who know his system rather then Coen’s coaches who know his system? If we want to keep the same playbook why look outside the building? None of this search makes sense. Besides we interviewed 25 coaches the last 2 years for O.C. how much more searching do we need to do? No wonder Coen ran away from this organization, we look totally incompetent right now.

  9. Bucsfan Says:

frankly I would be surprised if El Serpiente(Coen) does not hire an assistant or two away from our Bucs.

  10. Win in the Trenches Says:

    Hey Joe ,

Cannot find any “Defense Rules ” post anywhere is he still around or what ? He had incredible insights ?!

  11. StormyInFl Says:

Literally don’t give him permission to interview anyone under contract. Done.

  12. Steven007 Says:

Trenches, DR is back. He took some time off.

  13. Debbieā“ Says:

It is unrealistic for any team to believe their OC would keep that position and turn down a HC position with a with a raise in salary so large. As much as every organization wants some assurance with continuity with players and coaches, this is not feasible in the NFL. Demanding loyalty with a limited number of proven coaches and positions is part of the gamble for NFL ownership. This end of season scramble is difficult for anyone without a binding contract. Do it again Mike. Break that record one more time.

Suks to be reacting rather than acting!
    Out of phase
    Ainā€™t got no rhythm
    If LB3 is sitting there @19 gitā€™em !

  15. Pahpahmike Says:

Joe, I really donā€™t want to crank up this drama again, I am looking forward to who the Bucs bring in at CO and DL however, I will say this. I read Coenā€™s resume when the Bucs hired him and he did the same thing or something similar to this to the Rams and Kentucky. He was also back and toward between the both. My opinion is and opinions are like rear ends, everybody has one but, I wouldnā€™t want to follow Coen to JV after the way he handled leaving the Bucs and his past behavior with LA and Kentucky. With the Bucs theyā€™re a Stable organization with stable leadership at the top and right at going to a Super Bowl with Bowles or not, in JV, who knows plus the owner to me is not in the same class as the Glazers but, money sometimes at weigh trust and best deal so to me if these assistants are willing to take this change let them go and letā€™s end this drama.

  16. stpetebucsfan Says:

I totally share the sentiment expressed by jjjoe and the posters. Gotta keep the successful Assistants.

I’m not sure Coen wants to raid the Bucs however. There’s plenty of talent in the NFL and Coen is already under fire for horrible optics!

People can all at least understand providing generational wealth for your family even if it was done in a “sneaky” manner. If Coen then tries to steal Bucs offensive assistants it will become very PERSONAL!! Same for Khan! He’s not going to be creating anymore friends in the NFL owners suite and that could affect all of his London dreams.

  17. Pahpahmike Says:

Stpetebucsfan, good points and a lot of these monies are
Guaranteed so as you said understandable

  18. ATrain Says:

Why would any of our other coaches leave for Jacksonville???

They are coaching with one of the TOP HC is the NFL, RIGHT JOE?

  19. orlbucfan Says:

Jags’ ownership saga sounds similar to Carolina’s. Agree with stpete and others.

  20. Joe Says:

Why would any of our other coaches leave for Jacksonville???

As Don Draper would say, “THAT’S WHAT THE MONEY IS FOR!”

  21. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Can the Bucs just make them all assistant head coach? F Liam. He showed us who he is and heā€™s gonna fail as a HC.

  22. Mike Johnson Says:

The new name for Jags owner Khan is, BIG MONEY GRIP.

  23. I Remember 21 Says:

Canā€™t believe Iā€™m saying it, but I agree with Hodad. Lol

  24. BakerFan Says:

You want to keep coaching talent from fleeing, then promote from within. The QB coach should be first in line for interviewing and given a chance. You go out and get someone with the same amount of experience as him to come in above him, what is that telling everyone else on staff? Look outside to get promoted.

[Don’t be stupid. It’s a good way to get run from this site. Am sure there are other sites that welcome your bigotry. Not here. — Joe]

  25. HC Grover Says:

    Oh Nooo!

  26. FilthyAnimal Says:

The coaches are under contract. The Bucs can refuse to allow them to leave unless it’s for a promotion. So, you can pretty much keep everyone who isn’t being taken by Coen to be his OC. The candidates to leave are Josh Grizzard and maybe Kevin Carberry. Maybe Picucci.
