John Spytek Takes Raiders Gig

January 22nd, 2025

Sin City bound.

Tom Brady did it.

The former Bucs quarterback, who knows now former Bucs assistant general manager John Spytek intimately, just stole his former Michigan teammate from the Bucs.

You got it. Per Adam Schefter of BSPN, Spytek is the new general manager of the Raiders.

Joe thought this would happen weeks ago. In fact, Joe was really scared that if Spytek got the Raiders job, he would bring along Liam Coen.

Things rarely happen as they seem in public, so Joe suspects Coen already knew Spytek was gone and still re-upped his contract with the Bucs.

Spytek’s loss hurts. But it was Licht who hired Spytek from the Broncos to replace former Bucs director of player personnel Jon Robinson when Robinson got the Titans job.

And since Robinson is still unemployed, it wouldn’t shock Joe if he made his way back to Tampa.

If Licht has to go outside the building to replace Spytek, Joe is confident Licht will find the right man. He did with Spytek.

You just knew today wouldn’t all be good news.

    Thats a shame (Seinfeld meme)

  2. Trey Alderson-Cloutier Says:

Now Baalke is out at GM in Jax.. do they go after Mike Greenberg?

  3. Cometowin2 Says:

    Get Robinson back!

  4. JustOneGame Says:

Maybe Spytek will return the favor to Licht by trading Crosby to Tampa for a fair compensation. Highly unlikely but it’s worth Licht inquiring, after all the raiders are in a rebuild.

  5. Bojim Says:

    Good luck!

  6. Dewey Selmon Says:

I hope Mike Greenberg is left alone. Baalke is out in Jax.I wonder if Coen is having buyers remorse now after learning that.

  7. Rod Munch Says:

Is whatever deal that Coen signed binding? As far as I know there’s no contract clause that can keep a team from hiring off another team if it’s a head coach promotion.

Makes me a bit nervous – this news and the news that the Jags fired their GM a few minutes ago.

I’d give them KJ Britt and rights to Byron Leftwich and Antonio Brown.

  9. Ben the GA Buc Says:

You cant keep good people down. Gotta let them spread their wings and fly. Good luck Spyguy.

  10. Ben the GA Buc Says:

The Jags firing their GM should be further proof to Coen that staying in Tampa was the right move. No need to move to chaos.

  11. Simeon4HOF Says:

He do got a cool GM name tho

  12. Simeon4HOF Says:

Hope the Jags don’t take Greenberg outta spite lol

  13. Marine Buc Says:

Good for Spytek – he deserves it.

And as a closet Raider fan I’m glad to see the franchise is finally being run by a competent person and not a mentally deficient chicken McNugget loving pumpkin hair cut loving weirdo…

    Good luck John!

  14. Saskbucs Says:

Good for Spytek. Happy for him and the others who are starting to get recognition. Would be nice to keep the band together for a couple more years but with this much success it was inevitable… well I shouldn’t say that, will never be shocked by Tampa being overlooked.

  15. Ds Says:

Happy for him bring Robinson back

  16. BuckyBuc Says:

    Good Luck!

  17. Pewter Power Says:

Next man up so no reason to go outside the organization I think we draft well enough that we have a good replacement in house

    ——–

Actually Jacksonville firing their GM is because they lost out on their top two coaching picks, Johnson and Coen. The GM was seen as a roadblock to getting those guys as they want their own GM’s.

That move should make people a bit nervous because who is to say Coen said he wanted his own GM to take the job – and used the ‘new deal’ in Tampa to make his point. There’s nothing that I’m aware of that says Coen has to keep his word – contracts mean nothing if there is a promotion involved to HC, at least as far as I know.

  19. Nicholas Carlson Says:

Ah but it is good news! Very helpful for Licht to say: “Do well in this job and you’re gonna get to run a franchise in not too long…”

Four years later, Bucs Super Bowl winning OC Byron Leftwhich is still living rent free in Rod Munches mind #SAD

So how does that work exactly? We’re talking about Jacksonville HC job, the Jacksonville GM and the Bucs OC, and Leftwich was the Bucs OC and declined to take the Jacksonville HC job because he wanted his own GM.

See how they’re all related – like how it comes full circle?

I know the Baker Boi(s) are uniquely stupid, but man, I guess the bar can never be low enough.

  22. Hodad Says:

Long as he doesn’t sign Coen to be his H.C., I’m cool with him getting a GM gig. Is Liam’s contract biding for at least next season?

  23. Joe Says:

He do got a cool GM name tho

Yeah, always think of “SkyNet” when thinking of “Spytek.”

  24. 813bucboi Says:

    pass on robinson…

    i’ll trust licht…

whoever is running the scouting department needs a raise or become assist GM imo…

    GO BUCS!!!!!

If there were new salary cap rules to figure out, then he would be more of a loss. But anything he did to work cap magic with the numbers, could easily be done by someone with basic math skills. No offense to him, he did a great job figuring it out, but there’s not anything new to figure out these days.

    ———-

Actually AI would do a better job than any man. Just enter the rule book, enter the salaries, and the AI will do the rest. No need for salary cap experts anymore.

But I’m pretty sure he did a lot more than that, or Brady wouldn’t have wanted him since you could get any nerd to crunch numbers.

Should we be worried Jags coming back and make a new offer for Coen?
    They let Baalke go.
Coaches didnt want to work with Baalke, i dont blame them.

Guess we’re trading up in the 2nd round to draft a punter now.

    ———

Yes, I think the Bucs should be very worried. Nothing says a coach can’t back out. It would make him look bad, but no one outside of Tampa will remember that in a few days.

With that said, I don’t think he’d back out, but I would not be shocked at all if the Jags are letting him know the job is his if he wants it, and this time he can pick his own GM.

  30. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Rod

“There’s nothing that I’m aware of that says Coen has to keep his word”

I’m not aware of anything “legally binding” if that’s your point.

But indeed there are some things that “say” Coen has to keep his word.
Words like Honor, Character, Class, I could go on bet you get my drift.

  31. George R Says:

Do your Bucs one, trade us Crosby for White and a 3rd round pick!!!!

  32. Rod Munch Says:

stpetebucsfan – There are also things called negotiating tactics and playing hard ball.

Not saying Coen would go back on his word, and I don’t think he will, but I do think the Bucs should be a bit worried until they hear that he’s officially blocked Khan from texting him.

  33. Tbbucs3 Says:

Reminder that Rod Munch once begged for Kyke Trask to start and called Baker Mayfield “the worst QB in the NFL”

Yet Munch still has a vendetta against a QB with 41 pass TDS (same amount as MVP Lamar Jackson)

Baker has embarrassed Rod Munch time and time again and he cant let it go.

  34. Rod Munch Says:

stpetebucsfan – Don’t forget that Leftwich turned down the Jags job because he wanted his hand picked GM, and the Jags refused to give that to him. That is why when I saw the alert saying Jacksonville fired their GM right after Coen gets a new deal to ‘stay’ in Tampa … the timing makes you wonder if they’re going to take another run at Coen as he seemed like their surefire backup plan if they didn’t get Johnson.

Now they lost out on both and the next interview is with the garbage coach the Jets fired during the season.

If that is your next man up … yeah, I’d be calling Coen again and upping the offer.

Hopefully Coen got enough to justify to himself that sticking in Tampa was the right choice.

  35. unbelievable Says:

Damn… he was great, but I saw this coming.

    Good luck Mr. Spytek.

  36. Rod Munch Says:

Tbbucs3 – I begged for Trask to start? When did I do that? Please provide quotes of me begging?

Also, as you know, Baker was literally the worst starting QB in the NFL from 2021-2022 according to QBR. That’s literally a fact, not an opinion. Additionally I said Baker played really well this season, why leave that out?

Anywho, I destroyed you above and your answer is to copy and paste the same fake news you always copy and paste? You’re such a bore. Get some new material and try harder next time.

    I’ll pray for you.

Love all the updates today Joe, great stuff.

“Said for a while, I have little faith in Trask, but I’d absolutely rather see him out there over Mayfield since at least you have a lottery ticket-level chance that he could be something. Plus I just want to see him really get a chance, mainly to see his arm and what he can do when he’s throwing to Evans and Godwin. Also I’d love for the Bucs to have NOT wasted a 2nd round pick.

I hope he keeps it up and flat wins the job.

Not that I actually think that will happen. Instead I think we’re all going to be sentenced to watching an incredibly boring team go 5-12 or 6-11 with Mayfield starting 11 games, Trask starting 5 games, and Josh Johnson returning to Tampa, to finish his career where it started, wrapping up the season.“

LMAO! great stuff as always Rod…Nostradumba*s nailed it here.

Our former Bucs assistant GM, John Spytek, is heading to the Raiders. Congratulations to him on a job well done. I’ve long criticized our struggles in scouting West Coast talent—John changed that. His impact was significant, and I truly appreciate his contributions to the organization. Well done, sir!

  41. OHBucFan Says:

Good luck to Mr. Spytek. Well deserved.

  42. adam from ny Says:

spytek was good at the podium

  43. Irish Laughter Says:

Grrrrrrreat responses by our loyal Buc fans. Spytek deserves the opportunity and Brady was able to give it to him. Give Brady credit for being loyal to those he has much respect for. The Raiders have a big hole to dig out of and it will take Spytek to have the patience to get the job done right. As for our Bucs, Super Bowl of bust. Keeping it real in Skibbereen, Ireland.

  44. View from 132 Says:

Weird he’d be so public about being intimate with Brady. He ain’t nearly as pretty as Giselle.

  45. Rod Munch Says:

Tbbucs3 – Saying I’d rather see Trask start because Baker was reportedly injured, so we can see what we have in a former 2nd round draft pick, is ‘begging’?

    Damn you’re retarded.

  46. Durango 95 Says:

Coen isn’t backing out/ Robinson might be coming back.
That’s a good day in my book.

  47. Stpetebucsfan Says:

To LUV and everybody congratulating Spytek for a job well done thanks for showing the Bucs are not simply a class organization, they have SOME classy fans as well. You guys make me proud.

Appreciate that, Sir. At the end of the day, we’re all passionate about this team, and it’s only right to acknowledge the contributions that helped make it better. The Bucs set the standard, and as fans, we do our best to match it.

  51. heyjude Says:

Right back at you, stpetebucsfan, LUVMYBUCS, Irish Laughter, OHBucFan, unbelievable and other fans congratulating John. It’s hard to see him leave, but it’s a well deserved promotion for him.

I’m still laffing. Kudos to Spytek. It’s called getting promoted which is what smart people do in their careers. Licht already knows his replacement. Don’t kid yourself on here. Licht works with the coaches, and is the head honcho when it comes to the Draft/UDFAs.
