John Spytek Is Closer To Tom Brady Than You May Think
January 20th, 2025A couple of weeks ago this popped on Joe’s radar. And Joe is much more frightened about it now than previously after reading the following item.
Tom Brady is running the football operations in Las Vegas until he hires a general manager. A fair amount of folks connected dots between Brady and one of Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht’s right-hand men, John Spytek.
Brady and Spytek were teammates at Michigan.
It seems the connection is much deeper.
Brady interviewed Spytek for the general manager gig with the Raiders and per well-plugged-in Albert Breer of SI.com, who closely follows the Patriots and ex-Patriots (and the way he has Josh McDaniels’ back, maybe he covers them too closely?). Breer seems to think Spytek is a finalist for the Raiders gig and probably Brady’s No. 2 pick.
Part of Breer’s read is that Spytek is extremely tight with Brady. In fact, Brady knows first-hand how well Spytek scouts players and teams, not just because Brady and Spytek collected checks from Team Glazer.
If it’s not [Lance] Newmark, I’d keep an eye on Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant GM John Spytek for the Raiders’ job. He was with Brady for three years in Tampa, and was the point man in running the Tuesday scouting-the-opponent meetings Brady carried with him from New England (where Belichick and later Caserio ran those meetings).
So Brady met with Spytek weekly to go over opponents. Thus, few outside of Team Glazer and Licht know Spytek’s read on teams and players better than Brady.
And here’s another reason you may want to have a strong cocktail for lunch. Spytek knows Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen intimately.
NFL suits love coaches who develop their draft picks. And look what Coen did with three Bucs rookies this season. That makes suits look real smart. Buys them job security, which in Spytek’s case could help him rake in millions of Mark Davis’ loot.
If Spytek bolts for Las Vegas, then Joe can see him dragging Coen with him.
Watch out.

Really good to see our organization pump out top candidates like this. It equates to our upper management doing things right
January 20th, 2025 at 10:28 am
I would think Coen would want to see how the Raiders plan to acquire a QB. Otherwise, he’s just warming up for his next gig.
January 20th, 2025 at 10:30 am
Spytek seems very sharp and will likely nab a GM job soon. Coen would be better off waiting a year, and there’s lots of names that seem ahead of him in the rumor mill–Pete Carroll, Kingsbury, the OC from Minnesota, the DC from Minnesota, probably the OC from Detroit, Todd Monken, Mike McCarthy, etc. Dan Quinn might have owners thinking retreads are a decent bet.
January 20th, 2025 at 10:33 am
Let’s not wave bye-bye to Coen just yet. Think he’s just testing the waters at this point, see what is involved in a head coaching interview.
January 20th, 2025 at 10:34 am
It’s gonna happen. Hey cheer up, we still have Licht, and Bowles running the show.
January 20th, 2025 at 10:36 am
Ohbucfan, Trask is a FA who knows Coens system.
January 20th, 2025 at 10:45 am
Hodad, if that were to happen, which I don’t believe, can you imagine all the Brady stories coming out about how impressive Trask was during his time with the team? Just not going to happen. Now Detroit’s OC coming down to Raider nation and bringing Hooker with him? That I can believe.
January 20th, 2025 at 11:05 am
Really? This is what we’re gripping over today? At least it beats the endless drumbeat of “fire Todd”.
I TRUST Todd Licht!! I’m a show me the money kind of guy. Todd Licht has done that in spades!!! All the glory going to BA, and Brady started with Todd. HE made it happen.
Credit should go to the man in charge of everything, and that’s Licht. Do we really fear that he’s so incompetent he hasn’t planned for this day? He has a drawer full or head full of suitable replacements. Obviously Todd is a great GM who loves seeing his guys get their own shot. He has confidence in his abilities and the experience to replace his guys. He gave them podium time this year to help broaden their experience and composure. Spytek is obviously a strong performer and that’s a credit to Todd Licht!!!
I’m not going to grip over anything with Todd in charge!!
January 20th, 2025 at 11:30 am
Considering this years QB draft class Kyle Trask is valuable. Wouldn’t be surprised if his agent is working overtime.
January 20th, 2025 at 11:46 am
Coen has a job here that, quite frankly, he has not completed!! This is why he will not leave yet!
January 20th, 2025 at 11:50 am
Why does anyone here even bring up Kyle Trask’s name? He’ll be fortunate to get another NFL contract. I’m not convinced that the Buc’s will offer him another.
January 20th, 2025 at 12:09 pm
…there’s no reason to stop with one. NCAA championship tonight.
Excellent idea. Have a strong cocktail for lunch. I believe I will. Thanks Joe!

I always blame Byron for the disaster that was Brady final year. Looking back Byron was powerless. Brady was depressed and lost 27 pounds. No play Byron could draw up could solve Bucs problems. BYRON IS A BAD OFFENSIVE CORDINATOR but Brady was dealing with SHAME. His wife left him for the kids karate instructor. That embarrassed Brady any way Brady way of paying BYRON back was getting BOB KRAFT to interview with PATRIOTS. ONLY REASON Byron got interview was because of Brady. That how much BRADY LOVE TAMPA.
I loved the TAMPA TOM era. I had more funning rooting Bucs than I did for Brady and patriots. Belichick benching Butler ruined EVERTYTHING. Belichick will never be forgive for what he did in Eagles superbowl. Belichick didnt force one punt against Foles. Brady and Patriots didnt punt once either in the game. Defensive Genius Belichick was outcoached by Doug Pederson. Brady threw 505 yards.
Brady final year I blame it all on GISELE. Bucs fans need to know Gisele not only ruined Brady final season in Tampa she cost BUCS BACK TO BACK SUPERBOWLS. Gisele sabotaged the RAMS BUCS playoff game. She gave Brady ultimatum before game RETIRE or DIVORCE. Brady was unfocused got down 27-3. You all could BLAME BRADY which is fair he wasnt able to block out the NOISE and win the Rams game. She went to game thinking that was Bradys final game. Gisele didnt go to Eagles game she went to RAMS almost like the a scene from the movie GLADIATOR SHE to watch her husband lose. Gisele is evil and she is filled with BAD KARMA.
COWBOYS playoff game she CELBRATED Brady Bucs losing OPENLY. Imagine the weight of the world Brady carried around with him while he was married to someone who hated FOOTBALL nagging him to retire everyday
January 20th, 2025 at 12:16 pm
Look – Coen leaving will be a bummer for continuity’s sake, but he had some pretty boneheaded games and play calls, even for a first year coordinator. Couple that with the offensive talent on this team that anybody with half a brain could get 25 points per game out of, there are probably coordinators better than him that would kill for this job.
January 20th, 2025 at 12:24 pm
Brady Buc – I always despised the Geezahag. But Brady led the Bucs to tie the game in what should have been the finest comeback in team history. But instead, we let the Rams move 45 yards in 30 seconds for what was a foreshadowing of things to come. Also, Brady had no Godwin, AB had gone mental, Mike and Gronk were really banged up. Brady was a hero that day. It was our defense under the same leadership as now who decided it was a good idea to leave Cooper Kupp wide open down the middle. Same ol’ same ol.’
January 20th, 2025 at 1:28 pm
I’ve been saying this for weeks. Spytek will take a Coen and Godwin goes along with them. Brady is about to blow up our organization. He has very little love for us and has shown such thr past 2 seasons he left. It seemed to be a bitter ending when he left. I just hope if he tries to steal Coen we are smart enough to let Bowles go and promote Coen and now allow him to do such. But not holding my breath. I think we are about to lose alot. All 3 of those losses would absolutely hurt our organization now and in the long term.
January 20th, 2025 at 1:45 pm
Story of the playoffs thus far: TURNOVERS
Lions/Commanders LIONS -4 Commanders WIN
Rams/Eagles RAMS -1 Eagles WIN
Ravens/Bills RAVENS -3 Bills WIN
Buccaneers/Commanders BUCCANEERS -1 Commanders WIN
Packers/Eagles PACKERS -3 Eagles WIN
Chargers/Texans CHARGERS -2 Texans WIN
Vikings/Rams VIKINGS -2
A perfect 6-0 Other games were equal 0/0
You turn the ball over in the playoffs, you lose. Commanders. Eagles, Chiefs and Bills have yet to turn the ball over. A perfect 8-0!
January 20th, 2025 at 2:23 pm
Coen was 1 of 10 names on the Jags list. Jets and Bears had at least 17 and Coen was not one. Raiders didn’t have him on the list either.
Lot of teams have their first interviews completed on if one has not been given or requested then a guy is not going there as a HC.
90% chance Coen stays in Tampa.
Certainly if Brady interviewed Spytek he got an idea of what his 1A and 1B were.
January 20th, 2025 at 2:55 pm
If Spytek gets the gig, maybe he takes Jackie ‘the Bowles Whisperer’ with him
January 20th, 2025 at 2:59 pm
BradyBucfan
Well at least you’re making SOME progress.
“I always blame Byron for the disaster that was Brady final year. Looking back Byron was powerless”
I don’t know if I’d say “powerless” but certainly Brady came through the door with more POWER than Leftwich and kept it to the end. In year 3 if Brady got a call from BL and decided to audible out of it or even change it in the huddle what was BL going to do? Run to Todd and whine. Brady had MORE POWER than any other player in the league!!! And deservedly so! Nothing that happened on Offense happened without Brady’s approval, whether he lost weight or not. LMAO Largely agree with your observation who had the power just not Brady’s excuse, or the excuse you are providing.
Now this comment begs some questions.
“Brady final year I blame it all on GISELE…Gisele is evil and she is filled with BAD KARMA.” And you know this how Bradybuc? Seriously were you there marriage counselor? Did you have a close relationship with EITHER of them?
What are your sources? Have you ever seen Giselle interviewed? BAD KARMA?
We should all be so lucky. I saw a special on her. She always brought in more money than Tommy boy and she has a vast real estate portfolio she EARNED ON HER OWN.
I haven’t read any of the stuff you just posted except on sports blogs. I’ve never seen Brady say it himself. Do you guys even care what Giselle has to say?
Calling the divorce, “the death of my dream,” Bündchen debunks the claim that she gave Brady an ultimatum about choosing between their marriage and his football career. “Wow, people really made it about that. What’s been said is one piece of a much bigger puzzle,” she tells the magazine. “It’s not so black and white.”
Bottom line: It’s NONE of our efffing business. Have you ever had a divorce?
I’m like Tommy Boy a two time loser. It’s never pleasant and there’s almost always enough blame to go around.
Love what Tommy Boy did for the Bucs his first season. The Bucs gave Brady just as much in return. The mercenary got his 7th SB and the Bucs got their 2nd SB along with the two years of baggage the over the hill brought to Tampa!
IMHO players PERSONAL lives are none of our business and any excuses connected to them is just LAME!

Must be Doom and Gloom day.. move along nothing to see here.
January 20th, 2025 at 3:11 pm
Most people have come to the understanding that Bowles has hit his ceiling and he has no arrow pointing up. In fact his quiver has been shown to be lacking anything beyond what’s already been seen. Until the time comes where there is a reason to have faith in this franchise going forward, I’m not sure it really matters if guys like Spytek and Coen stay or leave. With Bowles as HC what remains will be purely academic.
As I said most people already recognize this but for those that don’t it’s just a matter of time. In the meantime there is no hope of a SB in this team’s future. Sad reality.
January 20th, 2025 at 3:33 pm
Brady does not go into a task unprepared. If he conducted an interview for GM he was able to present exactly what his likings are as far as Coach and QB and found out exactly who Spytek would want as Coach and QB.
As far as a guy that was one of 10 on a list of coaches for only one team I doubt gets hired regardless of any amount of intimacy.
January 20th, 2025 at 3:43 pm
Interesting, and I can see Spytek going to the Raiders.
Coen only has had one interview and may be hired by the Jags. It’s his dream to be a HC and if it happens good for him. I really don’t think the Raiders will go after Coen as HC. I am still feeling Deion will have that job.
January 20th, 2025 at 3:44 pm
Why wouldn’t Brady want to take Bowles too…….never mind.
January 20th, 2025 at 3:53 pm

“Most people have come to the understanding that Bowles has hit his ceiling”
Seriously without any snark intended Im curious as to your source of “most people” Have you read a survey? Simply counting the number of posters here who want him gone? How about all Buc fans? We who comment are a tiny fraction of JJoes readers much less the entire Buc nation.
Fred
“Why wouldn’t Brady want to take Bowles too…….never mind.”
Never mind as in you realize Todd already has a job that’s far more interesting than anything Brady has to offer? I’m not sure where you might have gotten an idea that Todd was interested in one day being a GM or player personnel guy?

Ben Johnson confirmed as the next Bears head coach. I’m calling it now Joe, Liam is going to the Jags and it’ll be announced today/tomorrow
January 20th, 2025 at 4:01 pm
If Coen loves working as Buc DC and is offered HC job at Jacksonville I can understand his millions ($) of reasons to accept.
But the flip side is going to an organization that is a bottom dweller and has Lawrence signed for many years. He hasn’t moved the arrow up and Coen doesn’t strike me as being a personality that will dump Lawrence due to salary cap issues.
If he stays with the Bucs I believe the Glazers would extend his contract and give him a commitment that when Bowles leaves, he is the coach in waiting.
The question is will he want to take the money from the Jags and be put in a position to fail for the duration of Lawrence or stay with the Bucs and continue to shine up the offense knowing that it will be his vehicle in a year or two.
January 20th, 2025 at 4:33 pm
Can’t keep everyone like duh people are going to want promotions. Surprised Spytek and Greenberg stuck around this long.
January 20th, 2025 at 4:39 pm
Ben Johnson confirmed as the next Bears head coach. I’m calling it now Joe, Liam is going to the Jags and it’ll be announced today/tomorrow
‐——————–‐————–
Ben wasn’t a real option for Jags, it was Bears or Raiders. Bears FO isn’t as tragic with a Balkee and Raiders would have been due to Tom.
Jags job is no desirable because Balkee is Teflon so if Liam goes there good luck.
January 20th, 2025 at 6:11 pm
Why wouldn’t the Buccaneers do everything possible to keep Liam Coen?
If it means demanding Bowles retires within 1-2 years and promising Liam the head coaching job then, with a big raise in the meantime, is that doable?
It just seems foolish to let this young offensive guru leave while keeping Bowles.
January 20th, 2025 at 6:19 pm
A Guru in ONE year with a fading offense at the end of the season in the two most critical games.
The Bucs would never have made the playoffs without Baker bailing out some bad calls on occasion.
Not to say that Coen doesn’t have promise. J McMillan has promise. Would any franchise give him #1 WR money after one successful year?
January 20th, 2025 at 6:29 pm
Dave Canales didn’t have a top 5 offense here. He got a job.
January 20th, 2025 at 9:40 pm
Bowles wouldn’t have a job today if not for Coen.
January 21st, 2025 at 4:10 am
Aqualung – Actually Coen wouldn’t have the Bucs OC job and a interview for HC if not for Todd Bowles. Todd hired Coen and he is really good about hiring positions. Todd hired Canales as OC and is now a HC. Todd isn’t afraid to hire talent and has proven so.
January 21st, 2025 at 8:55 am
stpete, I think you meant Jason, not Todd, Licht. You’re like me–haven’t had my first caffeine hit of the day yet. Believe me, I’m a space cadet. Hey if Spytek splits, fine. He has a right to move up in his career. Licht already has a good idea of his replacement. And the Brady-Gisele split is ancient history. Divorces are MESSY, and there are always a lot of reasons why the breakups occur. Coen is not ready to be a HC. His last game sure contained quite a few blooper calls.
January 21st, 2025 at 11:53 am
stpetebucsfan – Agree about Brady’s divorce. It wasn’t just about football after that many years. I do believe it did mess Brady’s last season though. Hard to concentrate when your entire world is falling apart. They both seem happier and put their children above everything else. Great parents.
