Jets Pursuing Mike Greenberg

So the Jets made it official, per the NFL Network ticker.
The woeful New York franchise formally requested an interview with the right hand man of Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht.
Assistant Bucs GM Mike Greenberg, “Greeny,” was a Bucs hire before Licht arrived and was billed as a salary cap guru after a year spent in scouting. The Jets want to interview Greenberg for their vacant GM gig.
Greenberg has had vocal support on New York sports radio from Giants legend Tiki Barber, Rondé’s brother.
Joe’s happy Greenberg got recognized, but Joe is uneasy about what a potential Greenberg hire in New York could represent as it relates to the immediate future of Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen. The Jets, of course, have a head coaching vacancy.

I don’t think Coen needs to even consider such an act of desperation. I agree with Joe’s ideas about the real worry existing in Boston or New Orleans.
I must be an effing freak. On more than one occasion I turned down more money to move because I was working on a WINNING station, with a WINNING group of people I enjoyed working with very much. Coen just this past week said one of the issues about moving for an HC now is he’d have to give a GREAT GIG where he is having the most fun of his life. He and Baker as well Todd Dangerfield Bowles obviously all work very well together. And Dangerfield who is slow to trust OC’s and QB’s has also obviously bought in on the Coen/Baker combo and lets them do things he never would have considered for Leftwich/Brady or Canales/Baker.

Yeah I hate this too. He will undoubtedly blow up our team poaching a ton of our guys from front office, scouting and likely Coen and Godwin. Man this makes me sick but I think we all knew it was coming.

Seems like the NFL needs some serious rule adjustments on the front office/coaching side of things. Would love to see these:
-2 year minimum commitment from new coordinators before they are allowed to take HC interviews/jobs.
-New GMs are forbidden from poaching front office positions and coaches from their previous employers for a period of 2 years from hire date.

Greenberg is likely to go soon but I would be hesitant to go to the Jets. It’s not a coincidence so many New York franchises seem dysfunctional for years on end. Surely there’s another job that would come along sooner than later.
Here’s another opportunity where Licht will earn that Ring of Honor placement one day. If Greenberg leaves. Licht will hopefully identify the best below Greenberg and elevate them, handing them raises, beating whatever offer comes from the Jets. Licht can promote everyone in the building he identifies as invaluable. Leave them a choice between Tampa and New York.
If Licht promotes all the right personnel, Greenberg can’t offer them a promotion. Then it’s bags of cash, location and who’s your favorite boss. Given the presented to the public perception of a tight knit family, Licht should be able to retain the majority of the staff.

There are only so many things you can do with the salary cap rules, and so to blaze the trail with it was important… but a computer program could do the same things going forward.
It looks like magic to us outsiders, but it’s not exactly rocket science.

Imagine being forced to stay on a job when there is a better opportunity elsewhere. It sucks for Bucs fans but opportunity for coaches and front office is the right thing.

I am glad he gets the opportunity to interview and move up in his career, but hate to see him leave. And like others have mentioned, possibly taking Coen too 🙁

Coen seems far too smart to take a head coaching job with an organization that clearly has major issues and a team with very little to work with.
I could see him going to the Bears where there is a plethora of offensive talent, maybe even New Orleans or even the Raiders. The Jets? No way!

People need to have the ability to advance in their careers. My only issue is that there should be a no tampering window until a team has been eliminated from play. Meaning no one could interview anywhere until their team is out of the playoffs or didn’t make the playoffs.

There’s only one way they could keep Coen, and that would be to make him HC, and who is to say he’d even take the job since it would mean Bowles getting fired?
With that said, if Coen does go, we’ll see if Bowles can come through again with another home run OC pick. I’m not the biggest Bowles backer (also don’t hate him to be sure) – but man should he get all the credit in the world for his amazing OC picks these last two years. One good thing would be that everyone would want that job after seeing two nobodies get head coaching gigs 2-years in a row, that would be the silver lining. Hopefully, however, it’s not an issue and somehow Coen sticks around. Would love to see what this offense could do with another year in the same scheme.

I like the idea of making Licht the President of Football Operations, then promote down the line. Then make Coen the assistant head coach with a pay raise. You’ll keep everyone. I think Coen in particular can be convinced to stay with a significant bump in pay and a promise of a light at the end of the tunnel. With Bowles age he can’t want to coach much longer.

I accept the argument that limiting opportunity is awful. Who wants to do that.
But let’s get real. First the NFL could easily implement a no interview rule until AFTER the Super Bowl. That’s fair for coaches and teams.
Second what if the team has the OC or DC under a multiyear contract? IF Coen signed with the Bucs for more than a single year then holding him or anybody else to their CONTRACT is as American as apple pie.
And spare me the worry for Coen. If he coaches for the Bucs next year half as well as he did the first 16 game he’s golden. If he picks up where he left off yesterday not so much. Coen will be fine wherever he ends up. He obviously has talent and the Bucs roster is finally getting back to decent after the SB.

also all i’ve heard this season, not only coming out of the new york sports scene, and since about midseason….
both new york football teams are considered “the 2 most dysfunctional franchises in the nfl”…
so it’s a difficult spot to change the culture…in a difficult town with an often short fused fanbase
