How Baker Mayfield Can Tell If The Offense Is Going To Roll

January 2nd, 2025

Searching for fast start.

This stat is still just weird for Joe.

When the Bucs have scored first, they’ve only lost one game. So they’re 9-1. That loss was to the Crows.

When the Bucs haven’t scored first, they are oh-fer, winless.

So you can see why the Bucs stress starting fast. (It’s so hard for Joe to wrap his head around how the Bucs, with one of the best offenses in the league, have not overcome even a 3-0 deficit.)

So yesterday Baker Mayfield was discussing the high-powered offense and when he knows the offense is going to have a good day. Not surprising, it’s how the offense starts, he said.

“I think Sunday [facing Carolina] was probably the most consistent we’ve played for four quarters,” Mayfield said about the Bucs offense. “Now, there’s still room for improvement.

“Like I mentioned after the game, [I] would rather have some touchdowns instead of field goals early in the game down there in the red zone. The good games that we’ve had — that was the most consistent one — but the good games that we’ve had, the run game has been going well, guys are protecting really well, balls are getting spread throughout.

“The defense is dictating where the ball needs to go but guys are making plays, and [we] just need to have that same mentality. It goes back to the little things. Guys were detailed, knew their jobs, knew exactly what we were trying to do to attack them, and we were all dialed in.”

The slimy Saints, Sunday’s opponent, have a sad defense, 30th overall in yards allowed per game (379). Their run defense is 30th. The slimy Saints’ pass defense is 27th.

Even if the Bucs don’t score first, there is no reason why the Bucs offense should struggle unless there are a rash of injuries.

Knowing all this-Why would you ever defer to your possession to the second half kickoff? Take the ball and score first.

Never underestimate the Bucs to lay an egg On Any Given Sunday…

…Especially after curb-stomping an inferior opponent.

I hope the team is approaching this game with maximum focus and effort. The Saints have proven to be particularly tough to beat in Ray Jay, and they have extra motivation to play well for their home city given the terrorist attack on New Year’s Eve. The Bucs should expect a very physical game, and victory will not be easy.

Thanks for sharing this Joe! Good stuff. Mayfield is a breath of fresh air. You can see why these guys will go to mat for him and, he for them. Same with the defensive guys. Let’s get on a roll fellas! We’ve done it before!

Saints will be playing inspired ball this last game. Not only for wanting to knock the Bucs out of the playoffs, but especially now for what’s happened in their city! Bucs better be ready, or they’ll be sitting home watching the playoffs!

Loving the individual cookies and milk. They seem fascinated with whole milk! So many calories. Too funny.

Wishing and hoping the Bucs go in first on the score board and have a huge win over the Saints.

Baker is part of an improving high powered Offense. He knows it, too. Sure wish CG14 could play. Mebbe, just mebbe, he may show up to cheerlead on the sidelines. I hope the Baltimore Carrion blow up as in implode. Go Bucs and 10-7!!

Seems like when they think their backs are to the wall or there is adversity to overcome they are ready to play. Other games they seem to be sleepwalking.

When you have a bad defense who can’t prevent first downs and gives up scoring drives over 50% of the time, if you don’t score first you can’t be patient on offense anymore because you know your defense can’t hold. So the run game gets less prominent and you have to press. Get down 2 scores and its a nightmare.

Great clip! Hope the Bucs devour the Saints the way they did the milk and cookies.

    Dominate! Go BUCS!

@ Bucsfan – I don’t think they have deferred when winning the toss at all over the past 10 – 12 weeks at least.

Ya’ll can hate on Cobra, but he’s 100% right. Just look at our record this year after each big win…
