Gerald McCoy As Buccaneers D-Line Coach?
January 23rd, 2025With assistant coach Kacy Rodgers bailing to the Bucs’ defensive line room for the warm sunny skies of Detroit, an opening is now on Todd Bowles’ staff — perhaps for a man who’s coached up his share of Bucs defensive lineman.
Six-time Buccaneers Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has always loved working with young players, Vita Vea included, and he’s a friend of Todd Bowles and is on good terms with the important folks at One Buc Palace.
McCoy was seen working with Calijah Kancey this summer. And he was seen on social media today implying that he’d be interested in filling Rodgers’ shoes.
Joe loves this idea.
McCoy turns 37 soon and would be a high-energy, devoted teacher bringing very diverse experience. Remember, McCoy played for several defensive line coaches in Tampa and was with the Panthers, Raiders and Cowboys after leaving the Bucs.
Perhaps Bowles could consider pairing McCoy with another D-line coach for a one-year trial shot of teaching and juice.
Joe is sure if McCoy were to take the gig, he’d be 100 percent committed.

Go get Sapp!
McCoy is a nice guy, but too nice for DL. No dog in him.
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:29 pm
Warren Sapp
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:31 pm
So we can apologize to quarterbacks after we hit them? No thanks.
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:34 pm
McCoy is loving the good life on TV why do grunt work
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:36 pm
Sapp would probably be willing to put his grad school studies in Boulder on hold! GMac not the worst idea though.
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:36 pm
Please god no! I love him but heβs too nice and soft. We need someone with some attitude that wonβt mind getting after someone.
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:36 pm
I’d rather the brought in Suh as a coach and not McSofty.
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:36 pm
Sapp. Sapp. Sapp.
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:37 pm
Sapp is an interesting idea as an addition to the staff, as he’s currently a graduate asstant with Colorado, but not certain how his fire would mesh the Bowles’ desire to often use his DL in more passive ways than most DC’s..
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:37 pm
Sapp too. They need some attitude on that line.
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:38 pm
Much rather have Sapp
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:38 pm
Just what we need, a kinder, gentler defensive lineπ
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:39 pm
Suh. He coached up Vita Vea to a Pro Bowl year and he is even tougher than Sapp
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:40 pm
I already stated it before and I will state it again – HIRE SAPP!!!!
No Mr. Softy Ice Cream! – We need a nasty AZZ MOFO!!!!!!
Please don’t hire McCoy…
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:42 pm
Suh sounds like a great option. The guys are already planning to work with him in the off-season, so it’s clear he still has ties to the team. Bowles might listen to him if he suggests never dropping Vita Vea into coverage again, especially if he wants him to have the stamina to make that crucial 4th down stop in the 4th quarter. Sapp would be good as well but he’s at Colorado currently not sure what’s going on there right now though as Sanders might be the Cowboys coach. Who knows????
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:42 pm
Warren Sapp as DC!
Fire Bowles
28-27
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:44 pm
Oh, please. Lord, NO!!@
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:46 pm
F it lets see what he can do as a coach
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:47 pm
The NFL Network pays waaaaay better than NFL position coach and for far less hours. I’m not a fan of him as a player but he’s not stupid and he’s great on TV, I highly doubt he would come here to coach.
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:53 pm
This is a joke right?
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:53 pm
Love McCoy but as a coach? In a win now year? Not chance. Suh, would my top choice if heβs interested or if we are interested in an ex player. Iβd put the chips in on Rex Ryan before the Cowboys do.
January 23rd, 2025 at 9:02 pm
Hell yes to Sapp or Suh or McCoy.
January 23rd, 2025 at 9:10 pm
God no!!
January 23rd, 2025 at 9:12 pm
Run off the rest of the fans???
January 23rd, 2025 at 9:13 pm
Hey Joe, I’m calling unfair. I would love this to happen. Unlike Sapp, DMC is a people person. He is also very smart, and the DLine would respect him. He is a former first round player and an All Pro, who played on a bunch of rotten Bucs team. The great Lee Roy Selmon was also a people person unlike Sapp. I met the man. He put the football program together at USF. Sapp was a great player but el stinko with the fans and others. No way. I don’t know much about Suh. Like Lee Roy, GMC also graduated from Oklahoma. Isn’t that the same college Mayfield went to?

βSorry Ben!β
January 23rd, 2025 at 9:22 pm
The D was soft enough, and that us before Mr. Soft Serve…
January 23rd, 2025 at 9:27 pm
Soft serve, or scoop. Let McCoy bring the icecream, find a real D line coach for heavens sake.
January 23rd, 2025 at 9:27 pm
Oh Hell no.

Ice cream for everyone!
January 23rd, 2025 at 10:36 pm
Is he gonna coach up injuries?
January 23rd, 2025 at 11:27 pm
For those asking for Sapp… I’m assuming your knowledge Of his people skills are limited. The more people interact with him, the less they want to continue.
January 23rd, 2025 at 11:33 pm
Noooo McCoy!!!!
GET WARREN SAPP!!!!!!
Common sense hereβ¦
January 23rd, 2025 at 11:35 pm
Ok if definitely take SUH as well!!!
SUH or SAPPβ¦
Say NOOOOOOO to soft-serve π
January 24th, 2025 at 4:26 am
Batman McCoy! I really like him. Such a good guy. Unfortunately he may be more fun than grit. Sapp sounds like he is really busy and could go where Sanders goes. Saleh would be good if we could get him. If we are looking at former NFL players, there are many others that the Bucs could look at too. Just throwing it out there, Ray Lewis?
January 24th, 2025 at 4:51 am
Nothing like hiring a lazy always hurt overhyped ex player who trashed your organization to coach your defensive line. Sorry Gerald can suck up all he wants. Stay behind the desk at nfl
January 24th, 2025 at 6:32 am
For a coach GMAC over sapp, sapp much respect to his playing career but he’s not the best teacher of young men to be in the culture of Tampa Bay these days. At least so says his track record I feel comfortable with a combination of Gerald McCoy and Warren Sapp McCoy being headline coach sap being his right hand assistant
January 24th, 2025 at 6:55 am
Keep him away from this franchise he reeks of losing. too soft too nice. Shouldn’t ever be in the ring of honor
January 24th, 2025 at 9:43 am
McCoy might be great entertaining the players as far as video games and dolls and superhero comic books and whatnot but Sapp did a great job actually coaching at Colorado. The DL there improved immensely, they say.
However, I’d go with the KC assistant DL coach if there is one.
January 24th, 2025 at 10:27 am
How great it would be to have Simeon rice somewhere on the coaching staff
January 24th, 2025 at 10:55 am
next flash poll… MCcoy in the ring of honor….SMH
