Door Should Still Be Open For Liam Coen In Tampa

January 23rd, 2025

Bucs co-owner Joel Glazer.

Updated 11:15 p.m.: Egos don’t win football games.

(UPDATE: Liam Coen will be the next Jaguars head coach. The Bucs’ door is closed.)

Yes, it appears Liam Coen pulled a low-class snake move on the Bucs by taking a second interview for the Jacksonville head coaching gig today when he told the Bucs he wouldn’t.

He may get the Jags job. He may not. The Jags still have more interviews to conduct.

Bucs fans are pissed off. So is Joe. But Joe thinks some fans should dial back their Coen rage that has them completely writing off Coen whether he gets the Jacksonville job or not.

Joe sure hopes the folks at One Buc Palace aren’t taking that approach.

Coen is the best offensive coordinator for the 2025 Bucs. If there’s a way to keep him in the job next season, it has to be done. Team Glazer and Jason Licht can hold their nose if they have to, but if the Bucs are serious about winning, the Coen has to remain the priority until he’s unavailable.

Tom Brady himself tried to leave the Bucs after the 2021 season when he was under a Bucs contract in a shady deal with the Dolphins that brought massive NFL sanctions. The Bucs acted like it never happened and brought Brady back the following season.

Joe’s not claiming Coen is Tom Brady, but the value to the offense the offense in the respective seasons in comparable.

Joe gets the fan rage at Coen, but rest assured, not one player (well, maybe one) on the Bucs offense is going to care that Coen tried to get a fat bag in Jacksonville but came up short.

Reminds me of Brady and the Dolphins a bit……

  2. #99 the big fella Says:

They better figure out a way to keep him. He’s going to steal our offensive coaches and take them with him.

  3. snookman9 Says:

Now I know what really hot women go through. When you know your hot you can jerk around people……

  4. Tucker Says:

But what about the culture Joe? Lol

  5. DE13 Says:

It’s done. Saleh cancelled his flight and took the 49ers DC job.

  6. Weebs10 Says:

I’m cool if he stays or leaves. It’s the players on the offense that make it so good. He helped sure but it’s the players. 4th stringers in the secondary and not having a linebacker that could cover in the pass game outside of Lavonte David is why the defense sucked. Todd Bowles defense works when he has the horses. Lets all relax and hope we pick up some stud new defenders this offseason.

  7. KnoxvilleBuc Says:

Exactly right, egos don’t win games but trust, continuity, accountability, and hard work do. I like Coen a lot and he certainly got our skill players the ball. Do I think he is a top flight head coach candidate? I do not but he has plenty of time to get to that level. In end the I just don’t see the Bucs keeping the door open if everything being reported is true. I don’t know the players or everyone in the organization would feel the same way about him as they did yesterday. We shall see but my personal opinion is that we move on since this isn’t the type of culture we have established at One Buc.

  8. MRWright88 Says:

Sorry Joe, character matters. As per Rick Stroud, Coen called Bowles at 5:00 and told him that he’d been with his sick kid at the Doctors office all day. If that’s the way this guy rolls, I don’t want him in Tampa.

Want to interview with Jags, that;’s fine – just be above board and open about it.

    Low class snake.

  9. Shake&Baker Says:

Dude is toast. One thing about this franchise and this team is that Licht an Bowles are men of character and leaders is men. Coen shouldn’t be allowed to ever enter one Buc place again. There is zero chance they let that snake back in. Players would lose respect for those two if they allowed him back in. It will never happen.

  10. Denny Gay Says:

I don’t want him here. He has to go. He’s gone already. That fool can dig holes for all I care. He’s an a$$

  11. Watch Daddy Sling It Says:

If he told the org “now, if they fire baalke, I owe it to myself to at least sit down with them”, sure, all’s fair. “sick kid, sorry I didn’t pick up”, not so much.

  12. HC Grover Says:

No worries we still have The Sideline Stiff he can be HC-DC-OC.

  13. ReenYeing Says:

I mean we will see. Trust in Licht and Bowles, so far they’ve had a decent eye in this respect.

Bowles somehow got some heat moved off his butt because of this though.

  14. Peter Says:

    All this drama lol

  15. M Core Says:

Yeah so don’t recall the Jags hitting the Rooney requirements. All minority coaches should decline the interview.

  16. Paratrooper Buc Says:

Look, I don’t like what Coen is doing but I understand it. My guess from what’s online is as an OC $3 million is top pay and HC can range from $6-20 million with guaranteed years. If I was offered $3 million per year with the Bucs as OC but no guaranteed contract vs a $10-15 million per year with multi year guarantee then it’s a no brainer. Hard for any fan to argue declining that money when you have family and as Baker said “that’s life changing” with such an amount.

  17. IrishTony Says:

Honestly the guy I really want them to keep is the O line coach. He’s the genius. Pete did a really good job with the backs this year but I feel like Bucky is just plain good!

  18. Xristos Says:

Again we dont know where all these end up but it has been a disaster anyway you look at it.
I am nt saying Bucs did anything wrong but it has been a disaster.
    For continuity
    For culture
    From PR standpoint.

    Unprecedented levels of Bucs Life
    Go Bucs

  19. Pelsbuc61 Says:

JBF, Coen has burned that bridge. I would be curious to see how the players, Licht and other coaches react if Coen tried to come back. He’s shown his true colors and frankly there are other competent OCs out there. I may be old but I remember when integrity and character mattered. Say what you want about Bowles, but he’s a leader of men and has plenty of character and class. Remember, it’s not some much about the Xs and Os, but rather the Jimmies and Joes.

  20. HC Grover Says:

He could still end up in Lost Wages

  21. Dick LeBeau Jr. Says:

Posted that in his unsigned contract that it would become null and void if he headed back up to Jacksonville, which he did. Being honest and upfront should matter. He just did some dirtbag type maneuvering that shouldn’t be swept under the rug. That’s not a good look on the organization to allow these types of actions and be like, oh, be he came back.

  22. Pewter Power Says:

People feelings are really hurt because Coen having and dreams and I find it hilarious. You can’t leave Coen, Bowles I mean the offense is doomed without you hahaha

  23. Zzbucs Says:

I will not dial back Joe..

Sooner or later things have to change, you can’ act as if nothing happened because he apparently a good OC…..

    Joe, you can’t be serious!!!!!

This guy is the lowest of the lowest, people shouldn’t forget this things….

  24. Fred Says:

Ok Joe i see that you also don’t understand the culture of the Bucs. Smh Yall act like that man was a savior our offense was good last yr. He is NOT
the best OC for this team. We will be better without him next year watch!

  25. BallHawk75 Says:

    Anyone is better than Bowles.

    28-27

  26. Durango 95 Says:

Looks like he’s done. Time to dial it back and let the smoke settle. So many different accounts coming from all angles. Tomorrow is another day.

  27. Hodad Says:

Jon Gruden just applied for the Bucs vacant OC job, and got it! Yea, I made that up, but how true is anything we’re reading? Wake me when something really happens.

  28. MP Says:

Only question is, do the PLAYERS have faith in him anymore?

  29. Herbiebuc Says:

This reminds me when chip Kelly did the same exact thing, also Billy Donovan for the Orlando magics 🤷🏾‍♂️ it’s something about Florida

  30. Herbiebuc Says:

    *magic

  31. ModHairKen Says:

Cut Coen loose. There are other good minds out there.

  32. BucsBeast Says:

It shows his true Character. Which in turn will taint his reputation.
His word means nothing. He can kick rocks.

  33. Greg Says:

I think one thing that people are forgetting the Bucs got pissed at Gruden for running his mouth and pulled down his ring of honor. The Glazers don’t like this kind of PR. They don’t like being caught in anything that even LOOKS like a scandal.

  34. HC Grover Says:

The Buc franchise scores another routine par. This is a real great stepping stone to fame and glory.

  35. Pahpahmike Says:

I mean if there was some decency in what went on today, let me clarify, I heard twice this evening that Coen called Bowles, don’t know if that’s accurate but if so , maybe the Bucs would think about bringing him back
But if it’s like the media had it, The media was saying Coen didn’t call and the Bucs couldn’t contact him. Other then that supposed call to Bowles , the Bucs should and will just move on to their search for the OC and other defensive coaches This is loaded with young talent and have been doing pretty good in the NFL draft and the have proven they can qualify assistant coaches

  36. Pahpahmike Says:

As I said earlier, this is no surprise to me from what I read about his resume, when the Bucs hired him. he did something similar to the 49s and Kentucky

  37. Tbbucs3 Says:

Terrible opinion, Joe, One of your worst yet

    That bridge has been burned.

  38. Tbbucs3 Says:

Imagine if the Bucs tried to bring that cancer back in their building?

    The players would hate it.

  39. Chad Says:

He can only take one offensive coach with him and that’s only if they are elevated to offensive coordinator, all the other offensive coaches are under contract and can’t leave

  40. FrontFour Says:

Screw this guy. Bridge has been burned.

  41. FortMyersDave Says:

Nice guys with integrity often finish last. Coen definirely looks bad if Stroud’s report is factual, lying to the man who gave you the chance to shine. Canaled dud it in a classy, respectable manner. Says a lot about Coen and Canales character wise.

  42. Simeon4HOF Says:

Coen all over the place. Don’t even wanna entertain thought of him stayin at this point, cuz seems like erytime come to a conclusion with this wild story it takes another turn.
Coen a complete bad trip if he wanna read us beg and welcome him back now lol

  43. Buc4evr Says:

Nobody at One Buc wants this guy back. From everything I have they are furious they have been lied to and played. Sick kid? That isn’t even a good lie. pathetic. He needs to be fired like right this minute. Bring Gruden back as OC.

  44. stpetebucsfan Says:

I do not disagree with JJoe but I’m more sanguine than everybody else here.

If my Irish OC bolted to the Jags for the HC turning down money and security for a rare opportunity, may he have the luck of the Irish.

I hope he doesn’t come back, but if he does I can still see him getting accepted as a guy who gave it a second thought and decided he really wanted to be with the Bucs. Now if it’s because he took the 2nd interview and the Jags didn’t hire him, different story for me. So many rumors and sources hard to keep up.

In honesty I’ve already moved on mentally and fanwise. Can anybody here imagine potential OC’s lining up behind the scenes already having their agents leaking to Todd B, whispering in his ear to get a head start on the significant competition among up and coming talent.

The Bucs OC job is a dream job. Awesome tools to work with and if the team stumbles again on D who knows…..I can just imagine texts and emails flying around tonight!!! No downside! Produce on offense and if the team stumbles because of D you could make it 3 for 3! 3OC’s – 3 HC’s!!!

OK some of you smart guys who follow it closely, Rod?, who is the next up and coming position coach to be a great OC? I think the Bucs are going to have their pick!!! Two prior OC’s=Two HC’s in a row..Franchise QB…Superstar RB breaking out with 2 good ones behind him…ah you guys know the potential of this offense do we not believe every possibly qualified guy also knows it?

  45. orlbucfan Says:

Herbiebuc, they aren’t the Tragic anymore, and I’m not a basketball fan. 🙂 First and foremost, pro American football and diehard Bucs fan!!!

  46. Todd Bowls Says:

As reported in several media articles although the ultimate source may be the same,

behind Door #1 Jacksonville is now offering “Ben Johnson level money”
which is $13 million a year, as a HC, he can name his own GM and a very patient owner who gives his Head Coaches 4 years with a younger QB and high draft picks

behind door #2 Bucs are offering $4 million to stay on as OC

Coen has a family and has dreamed his whole career of being a HC in the NFL

Which would you take if you were in his shoes? No Brainer. Glazers offered too little too late and even f they tripled their offer would not be enough.

The question is who does Coen take with him?

as GM Mike Greenberg? WR Chris Godwin? or Sterling Shepard?
OL Ben Brederson?, Robert Hainsey?, Sua Opeta?

  47. StormyInFl Says:

“OK some of you smart guys who follow it closely, Rod?, who is the next up and coming position coach to be a great OC? I think the Bucs are going to have their pick!!! Frank Reich and Doug Pedersen are out there with proven track records as OCs.

Nick Caley is the Rams TE coach and looks like he was there with Baker and Coen. He’s on the Patriots radar as an OC.

Not sure if Carberry can call plays, but that’s one way to block Coen from taking him with.

Josh McCown is getting a lot of run… another former Buc QB Brian Griese has been coaching under Shanahan for a while.

  48. Lokog Says:

I don’t see being a distraction how the team plays going forward hopefully lvd gives it one last ride however long that takes we are stuck with bowels f it hope we get lucky in the draft

  49. westernbuc Says:

It’s not low-class. Nothing was signed. They could’ve signed yesterday. Writing was on the wall as soon as Khan moved on from Baalke.

    Licht/Glazers blew it

  50. Brian Dorry Says:

No. You don’t lie and avoid everyone and get a second chance. Peace chump.

  51. Ken Says:

Remind me what has Coen actually won.

  52. SoCalBucsFan79 Says:

People are acting like Coen was the first and only interview conducted by Jacksonville. If you actually got out of the Bucs-only echo chamber and did some basic Google search, you would know the Jags have complied with the Rooney rule… as they had already interviewed with Patrick Graham, Brian Flores and Aaron Glenn. Clearly Glenn was a hot high-quality candidate this hiring cycle, riding the success of Lions last few seasons, not just some token interview. BTW being a ginger isn’t define as an ethnic minority under the Rooney rule… nice try though.

  53. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

Forgive ? I don’t know, he did some really screwed up stuff right there. Man of his word not at all. Lie to yourself, lie to your friends, but don’t lie to the boss. Pulling something like that could mean who knows, he just walks mid season or something. I already got trust issues and now you just threw it out the window as well. Trust him no more..

  54. BuxfaninTX Says:

    Let’s look at his history-
    Hired by Rams
    Left Rams, went to Kentucky,
Left Kentucky, went back to Rams,
Left Rams, went back yo Kentucky.
    Left Kentucky, went to Bucs.
    Interview with Jaguars, Declined
    Went back to Bucs.
    Leaving Bucs, back to Jaguars.

    Anyone see a pattern?

  55. Pewter Power Says:

Door isn’t still open with this fan base. You can go through a playoff game with a defense that never forces a punt against a rookie quarterback but all anyone would complain about is a jet sweep fumble. People are too dumb to realize it’s not just Coen but he brought almost an entire offensive staff with him. If he goes at least one person is going with him as OC and maybe more but it’s cool and so easy to find another one

Meanwhile Bucs lost spytek and because we need a coordinator for the 3rd time in a row Licht and Bowles won’t be scouting talent at the senior bowl. I hope spytek doesn’t raid the front office and make it worse

  56. Mobucs Says:

If the popular narrative is essentially true about Coen and he doesn’t get the Jags’ gig after further negotiations, Tampa Bay shouldn’t take him back, especially with a bigger contract than before. Lots of reasons have already been adduced for that. The reasoning on the other side, though, I find wanting. He isn’t a peerless priceless pearl; he’s had one successful year as an offensive coordinator. Whether he can repeat or improve upon that effort has yet to be seen. With the Rams, he was not allowed playing-calling duties, a reason he gave for returning to college coaching. The coaching carousel has surfaced the names of a lot of good offensive coordinators, reminding us that he is not the only fish in the sea. Some see the success of the Bucs in selecting their last two coordinators as some kind of freakish luck that won’t repeat a third time. I think its more a question of smart people doing their homework, and those people are still on the job. Canales and Coen developed aspects of the offense; there’s no reason a third coach couldn’t build on that, especially with the existing talent and the team’s drafting acumen.

  57. Pittbucfan Says:

Reminds me of the Culverhouse deal he had with Bill Parcells back in the day. Gave Culverhouse his word then backed out at the last minute. Di** move imo.

  58. Mobucs Says:

  59. Outrigger Says:

Congratulations Glazers. You just let the next McVay or Shanahan go and kept a mediocre at best coach with an outdated defensive scheme. Well done!!!

  60. Tbbucs3 Says:

The sky is not the second coming of Bill Walsh.

He was way overhyped, and the primary reason that the Bucks were good on offense was because the Bucs had great players on offense

Coen doesn’t have the personality to be somebody like McVay or Shanahan.

  61. Tbbucs3 Says:

    This guy***

  62. Tbbucs3 Says:

The fact that so many Bucs fans think Liam Coen would’ve lead this team to a Super Bowl next season is outrageous.

Reminds me of the Trask mob who insisted we had the next Joe Montana on our team

  63. Srqbuc Says:

If it was about the money and securing the financial future of his family I have no qualms about him going to jax. But if he did lie to Todd like the comments mentioning Rick stroud imply then it is a different ball game entirely.
