Did The Bucs Protect Themselves In The Josh Grizzard Contract?
January 31st, 2025Tampa Bay lost its 2023 and 2024 offensive coordinators to head coaching gigs: Dave Canales and Liam “El Serpiente” Coen.
Today, the Bucs hired another new offensive coordinator. Did they approach his contract with a status-quo mindset?
It’s easy to point fingers of blame for Coen leaving the building last week. They can go in many directions, but Joe is certain that everyone at One Buc Palace in mid-December wanted Coen back on the team next season.
For unknown reasons, Bucs managment didn’t pounce on Coen like a rabid dog before Christmas with a giant check to cash, one tied to Coen not interviewing for a 2025 head coaching gig.
“Honey, they’re offering us $5.1 million to not do a Zoom call that I haven’t been offered yet.”
The Bucs attacked re-signing Coen, it appears, like the Bucs played defense against the Falcons this season. They tried but, you know.
It’s a water snake under the bridge now, and perhaps it will turn out to be a fantastic end result for the franchise. Joe doesn’t rule Coen’s departure having a happy ending.
However, Joe sure hopes the Bucs got creative structuring the contract of new playcaller Josh Grizzard, today’s 34-year-old, in-house hire.
Joe would give a series of “for examples,” but Joe knows Team Glazer and their subordinates are far smarter than Joe in this realm. If not, well, Joe is available for a small consulting fee.

I pretty sure after what Coen took them though, and them also have own other franchises they got some type of a protection clause in Grizzard,s contract. So Joe no consulting fee for you. Lol

I really wish the NFL made a rule that you can’t hire someone who has been with another team for only one year, regardless of elevating them.
January 31st, 2025 at 5:29 pm
Honey, let’s take 5.1 million today so we can be assured no team can offer us 15 million a year to be their HC next season? Where do you come up with this stuff Joe? He’d be an idiot to sign such a contract, and I hope we didn’t hire an idiot. If you were Grizzard’s agent joe is that the advice you’d give him? Stick to making up nonsense on your site, and let the real football people do their jobs.
January 31st, 2025 at 5:31 pm
He’s never called plays so should get a typical contract
January 31st, 2025 at 5:33 pm
I hope he’s great and we forget about Benedict Cohen
January 31st, 2025 at 5:33 pm
No matter what the Glazers do, they can’t stop any team from offering a HC job to one of our guys. Offering it to our last first-year OCs is rather idiotic to me, but time will tell.

Hahahahahahahaha
So probably we were sitting 10 yds off Coen and he caught the Jags contract in the middle of the field uncontested.

I think a two-year lock should be required for DC/OC. Teams can interview your guy if they want but departing requires a buyout.
January 31st, 2025 at 6:18 pm
Even if he was under contract it wouldn’t have meant anything jaguars would have still been able to hire him as an HC don’t get that from Joe but whatever he is gone good riddance can’t wait until the draft baby, go bucs
January 31st, 2025 at 6:18 pm
Very glad we didn’t do more to suck up to that buffoon.
Jags will be better, a little. Their offense will show great improvement in year 1 then the gigs up. The guy doesn’t know how to follow-up one year with a 2nd.
Probably knows he only has 1 years worth of tricks before people figure his schemes and tendencies out.
Meanwhile, the dude from Yale who’s spent the last year cooking up plays for our pass game will be the next real deal 👍🏼

No matter whay bucs do.. they cant stop an OC from being a head coach. The contract literally means nothing

See what happens with Grizzard. Ill save my comments until I see results just like I did with Coen. Absolutely believe the glazers screwed up late season by not extending Coen. Maybe it wouldnt be enough anyways since a promotion nulls it out anyway. Still frastrated but moving on.

Ownership tried to have its cake and eat it too.
The Glazers are trust fund kids, which is why they regularly mismanage things.
If they were “doers” they would actually contribute to the direction of the league. Like advocating for a rule change to where teams can’t interview coaches until after the super bowl. You know, when the season actually ends.
Maybe Coen, like all the other big name candidates, was distracted while prepping for the Redskins.
You can say hindsight is 20/20, but this isn’t the first offseason people have proposed this changed and the league sat on their hands. The Glazers should’ve foreseen this unfolding.
And this offseason, they should be fighting to make pylon cameras universal for every game.
They will not. Because they are trust fund kids

“The Glazers are trust fund kids, which is why they regularly mismanage things.”
Wow just wow! They are SECOND GENERATION BUSINESSMEN! They’ve actually worked in the business on many different levels dividing the responsibilties among family members just like MANY other large U.S. Corporations!
Mismanage? They have freaking won Two Super bowls!!! Yet there are still a dozen franchises in pursuit of that elusive Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Four of them — the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars — have never reached the big game, while five others have fallen short despite multiple title appearances. Which franchises have been mismanaged?
I was angry with the Glazer FAMILY…it IS a family business..when they bought ManU forcing an austerity program on the Bucs a few years. Once they solidified their ManU position they again became one of the very best ownership families in the entire league.
They’ve spent money WAAAAY over the cap. They landed Tom Brady and the National Attention for TAMPA that Tom Terrific brought. They have fielded a Division winning Championship team for four consecutive years!
Other fans are begging to have their franchises mismanaged like the Glazers have done the Bucs.
Why is it so hard here for people to give others respect and their due?

I don’t know Hodad. I like the Glazers and them letting the football folks run the football side of things.
In our Bucs history, we have two teams.
The Culverhouse teams
and
The Glazer teams
with 2 Super Bowls.
Many pro bowl players.
A good GM.
Multiple division championships.
Plus they are very generous to our community through many initiatives.
As owners go of large franchises, they have done pretty good in my book.

Invasive snakes so bad in Florida.
Bucs need to troll Jags somehow with eradication donations.
Please and thank you,
Glazers

The reason the bucs lost Liam is because Celine Dion loving GM Jason Leitch was too focused on scouting a punter to draft in the first round.

Hodad—
If you paid attention to Joe’s premise on the Ira Kaufman podcast from early in the week (or maybe last week?! We’ve been spoiled lately with a glut of pods that I could get used to! I mean, the drive from Palmetto to Sarasota with only the Goons to listen to has made me ponder if my family would embrace the idea of me being the first to drive right off the new bridge over the Manatee River), the idea was to head off the interview bug with a fat check that came with stipulations which, if unmet, would demand repayment with interest. I think Joe said 5%, but with the current Prime situation, 12% would have been generous still.
The idea is that—at best—you do more than just try (savage line about the pass defense, Joe!), but at the worst, you financially make an investment the league cannot access or have you hassled for having done it.
Stpetebucsfan—
Beautiful retort. I’m glad I didn’t see the offending remark earlier, for I might have butchered an attempt at the poetry you delivered above. Huzzah.

Good.
Now time to find a complementary 35ish year old defensive coordinator, who can be mentored by Todd and let Todd finally be a full time head coach and make the whole team better.
February 1st, 2025 at 5:23 am
Has Bowles shown any signs that he wants to give up play calling duties on defense? This seems like all the energy is coming from th fans, not from the Bucs. Just like the college team an hour and a half north on I75, the fans expect the head coach to make a staff change because they want it. For three off-seasons in a row now , UF fans have been floating names to be hired as an OC because the fan base is dissatisfied with the on field offensive production in Gainesville. The administration has never publicly stated that Billy Napier would need to hire an OC and give up play calling responsibilities, very similar to the lack of public decree by team Glazer that Bowles must give it up and hire a DC. I hope the Bucs are smarter than the AD at Florida and force the issue because it would improve the defense immediately if the right hire was made.

Although Todd does drive me crazy with some of his coaching calls….

Even if he resigned during the season, he still coulda left for a coaching gig.

Funderstruck and Win in the trenches
Thanks. I feared it was a bit over the top. My son tells me I’m too intense, too passionate.
The operative thought that triggers me is the one “Win” posted.
“Why is it so hard here for people to give others respect and their due?”

Sure it will end happily…… for Coen. Regardless, he cashes a 50 plus million dollar contract for just 5 years of work and can then kayak the rest of his life. Folks on here bemoaning his departure need to get real.

I can’t fault him for taking the Job but he man enough to tell the team you renegotiated with I am gonna take the interview man is throwing around triple the salary no one would fault you but to ghost someone then come up with a weak lie shows your character this NFL no body sneezes without making X so be smart and upfront cause your character should mean something. This is 2025 and character and integrity are in serious short supply.
