Chatter That Liam Coen Wasn’t Getting Jaguars Job
January 23rd, 2025One of the high priests of NFL insiders shared a different take on Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen removing himself from the Jaguars’ head coaching search.
NBC Sports insider and ProFootballTalk.com founder Mike Florio talked about the Coen retention today and dropped this interesting nugget.
“Somebody yesterday who has got some knowledge of the search said that Coen pulled his name out because he wasn’t going to get it,” Florio said via NFL on NBC’s YouTube channel. “That’s usually what prompts someone to pull their name out.”
Florio went on to acknowledge that on the surface, it appears Coen may have been a top Jaguars candidate because of how the Jags organization fired their general manager, Trent Baalke, hours after Coen pulled the plug.
“It looks like Coen pulls out because of Baalke so they fire Baalke,” Florio said, noting the logic of the timeline but without necessarily buying it.
Florio also added that Coen may have gotten a Coach-in-waiting promise in writing from the Bucs and the team is completely free to lie about what it did or did not give Coen.
Multiple unsourced reports have claimed the Bucs gave Coen no such promise.
Joe puts limited stock in unsourced reports, which helps make following the NFL so much fun.
January 23rd, 2025 at 11:16 am
Like I said yesterday if there was a promise made, they would do everything possible to not let it come out. It would undermine Bowles and the entire season. No chance it would ever come out.
As far as Coen goes, I dont know if he was going to get it or not but a 2nd interview usually means you are very high up on their list.

Jags subreddit is calling the great jag of all time for getting baalke fired lololol

“Like I said yesterday”…says a guy with ZERO credibility on this blog.
Unsourced reports look like information gold compared to the drivel some of the guys here post.

Coen absolutely was going to get the Jags job and the Glazers knew that so they pulled the Brinks truck up and said here ya go Liam. Glazers have far more reliable sources than any quote “NFL Insider” unquote.
January 23rd, 2025 at 11:30 am
If Florio says that Liam was not going to get the job, that means that he was going to get the job. Florio is the pits.

If you’re gonna smear someone as having zero credibility because you don’t like criticism of Saint Bowles, at least read what the person wrote first. Couch said,

We Resigned our “Historic” OC back to Tampa for 2025 [2026?]. No, he did not go to JAX.
OC Coen said before all these interviews that HC Bowles told him to go and get the experience of an NFL HC interview. Maybe this was for his (Coen) interview for HC with the Glazer Family in the future?
Maybe there is a plan to have a continuation of coaches to continue the Buccaneers’ culture, crafted by our GM, a former player, HC, and Senior Advisor to the GM. To do that, keep building the Buccaneer culture, with in-house candidates. That is how NFL Dynastys are made.
GO!!!!!BUCS!!!!!
January 23rd, 2025 at 11:43 am
Coen probably got one look at the owners 1940’s movie villain’s mustache in person and said “I’m out.”
January 23rd, 2025 at 11:43 am
Coen wanted to stay all along and leveraged the Jags job to seal his deal with the Bucs. A deal that includes a future promise indeed. And I suspect the HC himself has whispered his intentions to retire sooner than later privately with Liam. Good for all involved unless your last name is Khan, who pretty much gets what he deserves too!

RustyRhino — Good point!
January 23rd, 2025 at 11:53 am
Why does this HC-in-waiting thing keep getting legs? It’s a direct affront to the Rooney Rule, in spirit if not in practice. We got around it with Bowles (and the Pats got around it with Mayo) because both men are minorities.
If Coen is ever “appointed” the new HC without a formal vetting/interview process that includes minority candidates, Goodell would be so all over the Glazers that they might as well appoint Chucky to the role of President of Football-Related Slurs, it would be such an offense!
January 23rd, 2025 at 12:10 pm
Why not just fire Bowles now and move forward fixing the defense?
In a sane world you should not want the person responsible for the defensive melt down to oversee the rebuilding of it.
Pieces clearly do not matter if the scheme is flawed and predictable.
Bowles will never change and we need to remove him from his position.

Florio is incompetent. He also inserts his politics in many posts.
Don’t trust him.

Zero credibility? LMAO… This may come as a shock to you ST Pete but you’re opinion holds just as much weight as mine. Just because you choose to shake your Pom Poms and twerk for the coach doesn’t make you special buddy. LMAO
January 23rd, 2025 at 12:20 pm
Again, Jacksonville Jags are a discombobulated organization, no reason to be desperate and hitch your wagon to that runoff the rails trainwreck.
January 23rd, 2025 at 12:31 pm
Rooney rule…. No way it’s in writing. With Florio’s legal schooling (lawyer?), Im ok that he may not believe what others may be parroting. However, there is no way glazers put in writing a plan to circumvent the rooney rule.
January 23rd, 2025 at 12:33 pm
Couch Fan and Jethro feel free to weigh in, you have a dog in this fight!
You lost credibility with me when you refused to answer a simple question after smearing me about calling all Bowles detractors racist.
Perhaps you didn’t see it so I’ll give a second bite at the apple.
Can you simply explain what posters mean when they put DEI and Rooney rules references. What are they trying to say. It SURE LOOKS like they’re talking about having a job based on the color of his skin.
I honestly wish that wasn’t true so please help, if you who posted it meant something else. Notice btw I do not respond to the tinfoil hat guy since the entire world is rigged accoring to him but you guys I think try but I need an explantion.
January 23rd, 2025 at 12:38 pm
Liam’s income has probably increased five-fold in the last couple years. Dude is 39, has plenty of time left
January 23rd, 2025 at 12:48 pm
Glazers: Todd, Jason, could we have 5 minutes with Liam?
(feet shuffle out)
(5 minutes later)
Glazers: Y’all can come back in. We didn’t promise Liam anything, and if anything goes public we did, we will deny everything. Got it?
January 23rd, 2025 at 12:48 pm
Joe did you realize Maxx Crosby has a podcast? here is a link. I think now that Spytek is their GM, perhaps Licht can make a deal.
January 23rd, 2025 at 12:51 pm
What makes you think I care about “Credibility” with you? I dont. LMAO
As far as The Rooney Rule goes, its a real thing, is it not? Arent teams required to interview, im not sure of the actual number, but a certain amount of minorites?
You are acting as if the whole thing is made up. Are they wrong? In my opinion, yes. BA clearly is responsible for Bowles being here. But being wrong doesnt make it a racist statement but when you are looking for racism in everything I can see how you can confuse the statement.
January 23rd, 2025 at 12:53 pm
Florio is TMZ sports these days….
January 23rd, 2025 at 12:56 pm
Rumor is that Coen interviewed well and was asked back for a second. Coen pulls out and Florio calls his source. The Jags, especially Khan, are pissed and trash Coen for pulling out by saying he wasn’t a contender. Sounds like the Jags organization is living up to their rep.
January 23rd, 2025 at 1:16 pm
Let me just ask you this. Is the Rooney Rule real?
If it’s real then someone can mention it without it being (R word so I dont get moderated). Otherwise wouldn’t the Rooney Rule itself and the NFL be (R word so I dont get moderated)?
The NFL made it perfectly fine to accuse someone of being hired by the Rooney Rule when they enforced it on the league. If 1 is guilty of (R word so I dont moderated) then you have to think the same of the institution thats forcing it. Otherwise you are just a hypocrite.
January 23rd, 2025 at 1:25 pm
“Unnamed Source” = No Source.
If they cannot put a name to it, it’s made up news.
January 23rd, 2025 at 1:30 pm
Anyone who claims that pointing out the Rooney Rule is R***ist is somewhat missing the point. It’s a fact that, in some ways, the rule itself can be seen as problematic. If you own a multimillion-dollar NFL team and are not hiring the best available coach based solely on merit—rather than skin color—then you might want to reconsider your position as owner. After all, many of your players will be African American, a large portion of your fan base will be as well, and it’s 2025. At this point, who cares about skin color? As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, we should judge people by the content of their character, not the color of their skin.
As I’ve mentioned before, I would love to sit down with Todd Bowles, have a barbecue, share a beer, and talk football. But his time management and his refusal to replace KJ Britt this season were frustrating. Stating the truth about the Rooney Rule isn’t R***ist; it’s a fact. If anything, Bowles not being able to hand the reins to Coen—someone he has chosen and trained to take over it seems as he said he was retiring soon—seems somewhat counterproductive almost R***ist in itself. Why should it matter if Coen is white, black, or brown? In 2025, the focus should be on competence and performance, not skin color. If anything, having to interview anyone at all shouldn’t be a rule and if you’re an owner that is suspected of being R***ist you should be forced to sell your team…
AS I SAID IT’S 2025 BEING A R***IST IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE!!!

I’m not grasping this…did you make the claim or did they?
I know for a fact it isn’t the case, because I was a Bowles detractor in the past…and I KNOW that was not based on race.
January 23rd, 2025 at 1:36 pm
I use the DEI reference to Todd because he was gifted the position not because he’s a minority. Tell me someone why does the woke NFL require a Rooney rule.Whats the fair # of minority coaches acceptable to the NFL. While you are explaining that to me explain to me why there is only one white starting running back in the NFL…maybe the woke NFL should come up with another rule…enough of the race baiting…it’s little and feeble minded…a person can criticize another person of color and not be a raci*””.
January 23rd, 2025 at 1:45 pm
Couch Fan
That’s at least a good attempt. You do understand if you’ve read the Rooney rule it’s about “hiring” practices and only requires “interviews” not actual jobs!
Clubs must conduct an in-person interview with at least two external diverse — minority and/or female — candidates for any GM or head coaching interview.
Clubs must interview at least two minorities and/or women for all coordinator positions.
Clubs must interview a least one diverse candidate for the QB coach position or any senior level executive position at the club.
Giving one an opportunity to be interviewed has NOTHING to do with actually getting a job…unless of course the team is impressed by the interview!
In Todd’s case he had nothing to do with the Rooney rule because he was already a member of the Bucs, who bequeathed the position to him and you could stretch perhaps and say but yeah because he was black the Bucs weren’t FORCED to interview anybody else.
That STILL comes down saying he got the job because of the color of his skin.
Opportunity versus actual quotas in “results”!
I’ll give you at least an A for effort. But no, changing rules so that “minority” coaches are at least given an opportunity is not the same as racism!!!
But thanks for trying at least. So you think because the NFL is trying to repair old mistakes it’s fine to say any black coach is a product of that system instead of actually “earning’ their position?
Bottom line is it’s STILL demeaning a mans effort not because of his sorry pass D, clock management, yadda yadda but saying the ONLY reason he has his job is the color of his skin. The NFL and the Rooney rule do not say that but it was a pretty good stretch…except..you STILL haven’t told me what posters who use the term mean. I’m not obsessed with the “r” word but I’d like to know why anybody would feel the need to use it, even if by your judgement it’s permissable, if not to demean the person by suggesting they never really EARNED their job.
January 23rd, 2025 at 1:46 pm
Jags: Hey, Liam, we really like you and want you to be our next Head Coach
Liam Coen: No thanks, I’m happy where I’m at, best of luck though
Jags: Oh yeah, well your fat and ugly anyways

Now there are hallucinations about “R-ism” comments and imaginary butthurtness being used to justify wetragging on legitimate posts. Nice.
My position has been is and will be that Bowles is the right one for the HC job. He is being spread too thin trying to do two critical jobs at once. The NFL is way too competitive to be thin on resources on two of the three most important coaching jobs.
A full time DC is a logical remedy. That’s not being a hater, that’s being a fan.
January 23rd, 2025 at 1:50 pm
Dom- LOL! Right on.
January 23rd, 2025 at 1:55 pm
BucBen
You conflate opportunity with results. IF the NFL had what I faced in broadcasting “quotas” perhaps your point might be valid.
But you go and show your true colors with your comment about black rb’s versus the # of white rbs. Again that’s the results of open opportunity may the best guy get the job.
Perhaps this will clear things up but I won’t hold my breath.
Dennis Green and Tony Dungy were only the third and fifth Black or African-American coaches hired to lead NFL teams at the time, respectively. Their firings prompted scrutiny and an investigation by civil rights attorneys who determined that when “compared statistically, Black head coaches have a higher winning percentage than their white NFL counterparts, but were still more likely to be fired.”
With this information made public, agents, coaches, front office personnel and players came together to pressure the NFL to institute a more equitable interview process. The resulting policy was named after Dan Rooney, then-owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers and chairman of the league’s diversity committee.
In 2023, there were six minority head coaches, or 18.8% of the league. Comparatively, players of color made up 75% of the league, per USA TODAY.
And yet all we hear from the likes of you BucBen is waaaa. They don’t deserve their jobs.
January 23rd, 2025 at 2:14 pm
And right after Florio said that, Simms chimed in to say that “2 or 3 people” he talked to said that Coen *was* the front runner and Baalke was why didn’t want the job. All we really know is Coen is here now, and he has leverage to be the next coach of the Bucs. And if that doesn’t work out, he’s covered himself financially regardless of the outcome.
January 23rd, 2025 at 2:21 pm
Well Bucs fans, Kacy Rodger’s is gone to Detroit
January 23rd, 2025 at 2:27 pm
Dom comes in and adds some much needed levity. Aside from those friendly folks that stumble in here and unintentionally provide levity just by being their own unique selves
Florio doIng whatever schtick it is that Florio does. This week by doing a little lawyer come journalist come mind reader. Honestly I wouldn’t give you 10 cents for national sports and news journalists. Aren’t these people supposed be the eyes, ears and sometimes voice of the general public. These cats have completely lost the plot.
As far as all this lick and a promise of Coen getting a nod and wink deal or some secret handshake thing to become the next head coach. Forget all that nonesense it means nothing,. As long as Coen can put points on the board and present a formidable offense every week. He can write his own ticket to wherever it is that he wants to go.
Too many people trying to find something new that hasn’t been thought of before drives people to say the most outlandish things just to be unique and satiate their own ego.

Another lil tidbit Bucs fans A .Scheftler state that Coen has already signed the new contract
January 23rd, 2025 at 2:31 pm
Smashsquatch … ‘And I suspect the HC himself has whispered his intentions to retire sooner than later privately with Liam.’
I believe exactly the same thing. BA wouldn’t have won diddly without Bowles #8-ranked defense in 2020 & his #5-ranked defense in 2021. The relationship that those two had IMO is very similar to the relationship that TB & LC have developed.
BA didn’t tell Bowles what to call for defensive plays, anymore than Bowles tells Coen what to call for offensive plays. There’s a tremendous amount of mutual respect in relationships like that. But that respect is earned .. Bowles produced quality defenses for BA, just like Coen has produced a quality offense for Todd.
I won’t be surprised in the slightest to see Bowles retire voluntarily after the 2026 season (when his current contract runs out) & for Liam to take over as HC. That MIGHT even happen after the 2025 season, your never know.

‘Joe puts limited stock in unsourced reports, which helps make following the NFL so much fun.’
I love statements like that Joe. EVERY report we’ve read in the past several days about Copen getting the Jags HC job (or not) has been unsourced. People who are in the Inner Circle don’t talk, because if they do, they’re no longer welcome in the Inner Circle. There’s no way to validate any of this ‘stuff’.
And the irony is that if anyone does validate any of these reports, only those who WANT to believe them will believe them anyways. The other half of so will always be convinced that they’re lying.
January 23rd, 2025 at 2:51 pm
You trolls (and you know who I mean) 🤣 🤣
Coen is back and that’s a good thing.
Todd will be back and that’s a good thing.
We will be better next year than we were this year, again.
We have a “culture” (and by we I mean them cause the commenters here, and especially the haters/trolls are not a part of it) that players and coaches are drawn to thanks to Jason and Todd.
The current state of the Bucs team and organization is inviable.
Most teams fans would kill to be in our position.
Keep on hollering for Todd’s head, I’m sure the management will read your posts and bust some moves based on your bigoted opinions anyway now 🤣
January 23rd, 2025 at 3:02 pm

The maroon who complains people are hollering for Todd’s head must be unable to read. Is in a constant state of triggeredness. . Most critics of Todd are also complimentary of his culture building, strong locker room, player loyalty.
Many believe that a full time DC would solve two problems.
Stay triggered though, it’s impressive.

My man, delicate sensibilities on display in a NFL forum. Just when you think you’ve seen it all. It’s amazing to me how one can be so emotionally distraught over the most silly things. Something that has traditionally been the domain of masculinity. You have seen it with your own eyes, the drive to make the game more accessible to every demographic. Taylor Swift. pink touches on uniforms. One cause after another so everyone can have their moment in the sun to signal their virtue. It started with society at large and has now eaten its way into the great NFL. I can’t believe some of things that come out of the mouths of grown men in a forum like this. It is all so emotional. The contrived drama. The immediate jump to grab the victim status. Ugh.

Ad hominem
An ad hominem fallacy is one that attempts to invalidate an opponent’s position based on a personal trait or fact about the opponent rather than through logic.
Straw man
A straw man argument is one that argues against a hyperbolic, inaccurate version of the opposition rather than their actual argument.

@Durango: The pink touches are a nod by the NFL to breast cancer. My daughter went through stage 3 breast cancer at 27 years of age. It was estrogen driven so she had all of her female parts addressed – and not in a good way. My hot Polynesian wife just beat stage 3 lung cancer. Kudos to the NFL for caring.
My moment in the sun. Raising four amazing daughters on a cops salary. Military, three police academies in three different states as I followed my wife’s Army career. Street cop, undercover, and detective. May I see your sterling insensitive resume sir?

Go Mighty Bucs this year!!

Hey orlbuc- I think you’re swell! Your user name always autocorrects to something else, and by all means hate on everyone who points out that Saint Bowles is not a hybrid of the pope and Superman. And if you would like to have a discussion about the band who performed the song I am honoring with my screen name, we could do that. I saw them 4 times at the old Bayfront Center in St Pete and once at Tampa stadium. If you ever saw them you’d know Ian Anderson was very athletic.
Of course, you set the standard for sports-evoking screen names I’ll give you that.
