Bucs Spending Hours Tapping Into Rams’ Intel

January 28th, 2025

Dave Ragone with one of his former pupils.

Either the Bucs really want another coach from the Sean McVay tree or they’re pulling an Al Davis, trying to capture Rams intel the way the paranoid feds think Red China is using TikTok as a tool against innocent Americans.

The Bucs today interviewed Rams quarterback coach Dave Ragone, types Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.

Joe really, really hopes this interview was nothing more than a fishing expedition because Ragone’s resume before his one season with the Rams is positively frightening.

Some, um, highlights:

* He spent three years with the Titans, two as a wide receivers coach and one as a quarterback under the guidance of offensive wizard Mike Munchak. The quarterbacks Ragone helped lead were the likes of Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jake Locker. As receivers coach, Ragone coached up Nate Washington and a bunch of slugs. (Kenny Britt, anyone?)

* After a season working quality control with Brother of Chucky in Washington, Ragone worked for three years in Chicago as quarterbacks coach. There, Ragone was known best for his work molding Mitch Trubisky.

* Moving to Atlanta, Ragone then spent three seasons as the offensive coordinator for Artie Smith and the Dixie Chicks.

Good thing this guy is friends with McVay. Otherwise, he might be an assistant at Wake Forest or Troy.

Ordinarily, it’s hard to go wrong with a McVay disciple. But in Ragone’s case, he’s going to need at least a half-dozen years with McKay to rewire his head to undo what he has previously learned.

In no way does Joe want anyone running the Bucs offense in 2025 who had anything to do with Trubisky or Smith.

Who knows? I would think not first choice, but can’t always judge a coach on the personnel he’s been given.

The Black Mirror version would then be unemployed Lefty. His resume would be stellar, without context.

  2. gbobucsfan Says:

Leave Wake Forest out of this !!! haha

  3. Hodad Says:

Why don’t we just trade for McVay? Get an OC, and a real HC, kill 2 birds with one stone! Detroit just hired a new OC, didn’t take them this long to get it done. Let’s keep searching.

  4. Joe Says:

Leave Wake Forest out of this !!! haha

    Ha! 🙂

Joe would gladly take Dave Clawson over this guy Ragone.

  5. Let Em Bake Says:

    hodad….I like it.

    Hhhhmmm? 🤔

Wonder if wifey would like Clearwater Beach or Anna Maria Island? Her house may get washed away but at least it won’t get burned down.

Imagine how many trips to the Amalfi Coast she could take with the tax savings in just one year.

  7. Marine Buc Says:

Our GM and Head Coach was responsible for hiring Byron Leftwhich, Dave Canales and Liam Coen as OC…

    2 out of 3 ain’t bad.

I like our chances of hiring another successful leader of our offense.

    Go Bucs!

  8. Joe Says:

    Marine:

To be fair, thinking Todd Bowles inherited Byron Leftwich.

  9. LongSeason Says:

Leave the politics out of this. This is football fake Joes.

  10. Sheen Says:

Arians stuck Bowles with Leftwich, so he’s actually batting 1.000

  11. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Joe and Sheen

    That is true.

So the current leadership is 2 for 2…

    Even better!

    Go Bucs!

  12. Pewter Power Says:

Trubisky has gutted this defense so there’s that. I’ve never seen so much fear over the loss of a coordinator and choosing the next one but Everybody knows why

  13. Bojim Says:

To be fair to tic toc, Google knows everything about you anyway. Even if you only glanced at a keyboard.

  14. orlbucfan Says:

This fan will be glad when the new OC is hired. Then the hard work starts regarding the players for next season. Good thing this isn’t 1984, 85, 86….

  15. Watch Daddy Sling It Says:

This is when it’s handy to have Tom Moore contributing to these decisions.

  16. Rod Munch Says:

What are the Joe’s trying to do, put together a group to buy TikTok? The Chinese are literally using TikTok to steal private information from Americans, and using it to train AI models, which will be used against us. That’s happening as we speak, and is far from a paranoid take.

As for football – pretty obvious that Bowles really likes this scheme for his offenses, and he’s done a bang up job so far when picking from that tree. Big thing, again, is scheme and adaptability. Coen was exceptional at both of those, and they need a guy who is smart, not predictable in playcalling, and who will change things up immediately if it’s not working – or to adjust for injury / performance. They’ve had very good luck going deep into these coaching searches, so I’d certainly give them the benefit of the doubt on whatever they want to do.

    Baiting the snake!?

  18. PewterStiffArm Says:

Crap like this makes me nervous, although Bowles and Jason have given us two good offensive teachers. I’m leaning towards the Rams fruit tree myself.

  19. Pahpahmike Says:

Joe I agree, I am not an NFL GM or personnel guy but, to me it seems like N Scheelhaase has the best resume and on paper look to be the best fix for Mayfield and the Bucs offense out of the 5 interviews so far. How he interviewed is another story. Only Bowles and Licht know

  20. FilthyAnimal Says:

Again, without some deeper knowledge on this guy, it’s unfair to make judgements. He obviously didn’t have much to work with in his stints as QB coach. If McVay hired him, he’s no schlub. And it never hurts to take a look.

I think Todd has shown that he’s not a ground and pound guy. He loved Coen. He wants a robust and effective running game… and look at some of the best teams in the league. Big time running games. It’s about how you get it done, and making the passing and running game fit together.

  21. Durango 95 Says:

Going 2 for2 in getting them is not as impressive when you consider they are 0-2 in keeping them. In fairness, I would be happy if they had gone 1-2 in keeping them. I’ll let the reader interpret which 1 of the 2 would have been best.

But maybe they do hit on a 3rd. Odds suggests it’s not likely. But therein lies the fun.

  22. Marky mark Says:

I think Bakes is still angry at anything and everything Browns so nobody from there. Rams is where he turned things around. Really whatever Baker wants. He is so experienced he can call his own plays. Having said that if you just say anyone Rams you overlook red flags. I would also look at Denver, Chargers, Vikings, Eaglez and Bengals, Commanders assistants.

  23. Cybetsecurity_intern Says:

Joes google is your friend, go use it to compare tiktok in china and outside of china. Just go inform yourself.

  24. Oxycondomns Says:

i get a mcvay disciple can keep some sort of continuity . im more impressed with andy reid . whenever there is a 4th down call he or his coaches always seems to draw up a wide open play. feel like he doesnt get the same respect as bellichek did with his role with brady. feel like you can plug in josh allen or lamar jackson and the chiefs would still win super bowls.

  25. MerryPlankster777 Says:

Tick Tock is garbage any way you cut it, if only for the time wasted. Why would anyone do that to themself?

  26. BucsFan81 Says:

Maybe it’s time to call Bruce Arians down to start calling plays for Bowles and this offense

  27. rrsrq Says:

    Anyone internal interviewing

  28. rrsrq Says:

Thad Lewis interviewing for the Texans OC job but not internally, he kinda has been there for Baker also and Tom

  29. BucEmUp Says:

I don’t think the oc job in Tampa is as desirable as most think. Yeah, we have weapons and baker, but we also have a defmese that allows the clock to tick down while the other team converts forst downs at will and scores on every drive. Who wants to deal with that? It would be equivalent with a subpar offense and a dominant defense you’d get the same number of scoring chances and time of possession but at least the opportunity to improve the offense would exist. If I’m an oc I’m looking at our defense and thinking twice about the constant pressure to save the day because I can’t count on more than one or two punts in an entire game.

  30. BucEmUp Says:

I agree rrsrq tell arians to call the plays and get his arse back on the field or fire his entire staff sitting in payday land doing little to nothing. Love Jason licht not thrilled with the way everything has gone since arians stepped back. Everyone know Leftwich is garbage and Brady ran the offense and that’s why nobody wants him. Licht needs to run this team his way and stop catering to Arians hand me downs.

  31. GoneGator Says:

Have the brass given any idea how long the search for a new OC might last?

  32. MelvinJunior Says:

I remember him from way back when he was the Louisville QB. Seems like forever ago, if we’re talking about the same one!?

  33. Rook Says:

But China is using Tik Tom to spy on Americans

  34. cmurda Says:

Of course China is using TikTok to spy on the U.S. It’s common sense ya bunch of lemmings.

Anyway, if I’m an O coordinator hopeful or a guy hoping for a 1 season resume, then you would be coming to the right place. Offense is already loaded, o line seemed to really gel at the end of the season, Baker, M.E, potentially Godwin, Bucky, an emerging J Mac. It’s a slam dunk. Last 2 O coord’s became head coaches the following year? Pfft. Sign me up. We should be able to find a very good offensive coordinator. Todd shouldn’t have to settle for mediocrity or blind dart throws.

  35. Oddball Says:

    What’s TikTok?

  36. GhostofBrady Says:

If Stafford retires, I can see the Bucs letting Bowles go and offering next year’s first round and other picks to the Rams. Grab another California NFL team HC to the Bucs ala Jon Gruden. Buc Nation would go crazy. Baker is all about loyalty to Bowles, the guy that brought him here. But Baker would probably ditch Bowles like the Browns ditched him for McVay, the guy that pulled him out of free agency and started the Baker rebuild on the Rams squad.

I am curious. What would others on this board give up to get McVay from the Rams to Tampa. Especially if Stafford were to retire and there would be no QB that could anchor his offense.

  37. garro Says:

Joe stop disrespecting Troy! They have almost beat some pretty good teams!

    LOL

Lived about 30 minutes from there for quite a while and they did have a couple of decent teams over those years. Just not quite good enough to get over the hump. Actually attended school there for a bit too. LOL

    Go Bucs!

  38. Denny Gay Says:

I wouldn’t take the Tik-Tok ‘stealing of data’ too lightly.. We’re talking about China. The Chinese government has access to all of those peoples data. China is not looking out for the best interest of the US.

  39. GoneGator Says:

China? Please….. The tech bros, our government, and corporate America have ALL your/our info already. And theres nothing China could possibly do with our info that’s worse than whats already being done by good the old U. S. A.

We surrendered our privacy years ago, without much of a fight. 😔
