Bucs Couldn’t Reach Liam Coen

January 23rd, 2025

Liam Coen.

Joe has no idea what happened and won’t try to interpret what this means, but it is newsworthy.

Apparently, per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Bucs tried to reach out to (former?) Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen today. What the purpose was of the attempting was, Joe won’t speculate. But the Bucs could not reach him.

@AdamSchefter: Buccaneers have had no contact today with Liam Coen or his representation. The team has made multiple efforts to reach him and has not. Coen is in Jacksonville discussing a deal to become the head coach.

Does this simply mean Coen was too involved in talks with the Jags to respond? Your guess is as good as Joe’s.

A sad, sad day for the Bucs. The second-best offensive coordinator the Bucs had (second only to Bucco Bruce Arians) is nearly gone.

Joe knows the defense better step up in 2025 because Joe fears without Coen pulling the levers for the offense, it won’t be any better than it was this past season.

Joe feels like barfing.

Better lock up Mike Greenberg as Jags are gonna come for him too

  2. WhatTheBuc Says:

    Welcome to football purgatory.

  3. Anyhony Says:

This guy has absolutely NO loyalty whatsoever!

  4. Half_Sac Says:

Ghosting an organization after agreeing to a deal is career suicide. Now he’s going to one of the worst ran franchises with one of the worst owners of not the worst and a QB who had his confidence shattered 2 years ago. He’s headed to mediocrity and will be another forgotten HC and he deserves it for ‘ghosting’. I’m in my 20s and I ghost a girl after a hook up who I’ve only met once. Not my career that pays me millions lol

  5. firethecannons Says:

Is Bruce Arians capable of being OC?

  6. infomeplease Says:

    Say it ain’t so!!!!

  7. K Says:

Coen said he told Todd Bowles. Gee I wonder Bowles didn’t say anything to Bucs brass.

  8. Again Says:

    5-12 here we come

  9. Let’s Go Says:

The man’s goal is to be a head coach. He said “No” and probably had someone tell them through back channel that the GM was the issue. Now he can take the job and have a better shot at success. It sucks for the Bucs, but I can’t blame the man for getting paid and fulfilling his goal.

  10. Tye Says:

Jags are a rough organization to go to SO my belief is Coen would rather risk his career than to continue being held b ack by Bowels incompetence…
Coen likely wants to separate himself from Bowels so he can better his chance at success in the NFL!

  11. Again Says:

I am sure Todd can call the offense as good as he can the defense. Here comes the wing-T

  12. Weston Says:

Hopefully this BS makes the NFL realize how idiotic it is to allow this 1 and done Coordinator BS. Its so bad for the game. Cant wait to welcome our 4th OC in 4 years. Yay.

  13. Mac Says:

Man that is so wrong. He just blows them out. Shows alot about him. Dude moves around every year and never stays in one spot. Really disgusts me that he did us dirty like this. An organization that gave you the opportunity to get to this point and he just ghosts us? A man with no character.

  14. Jay Buc Says:

Jax was poison as long as their GM was there. Earlier today they fired him and I’m sure that changed the way Coen looked at Jax and the possibilities there.

  15. Josh Says:

Where’s that Bowles culture at? Coen’s gone now apparently, Canales jumped ship as soon as he could, and now the defensive coaches are leaving. We all criticized them, but watch them be great, and it turns out it was Bowles’ playcalling. I was fine with Bowles staying as long as we didn’t have to reboot the offense, but now I feel like this will just be a wasted season, with him being fired after anyways. It’s just too much to overcome—three coordinators in three years. Even the great Peyton Manning said it’s like learning a new language. You can’t just expect Baker, Mike, and Bucky to keep going exactly the same with new coach after new coach. If the defense doesn’t improve drastically, I just don’t see how you can go out and find another seemingly great offensive innovator. Maybe Thad Lewis can pull it off, but I just don’t see it. It’s almost like lightning striking—not once, not twice, but three times. It could happen, but holy crap, Bowles should be a GM if that’s the case, as he can identify offensive coordinators like no one else.

  16. Warrenfb12 Says:

Yikes. Going to be a lot of new staff next year.

  17. Again Says:

Fire Todd now, give Liam the keys. If he is gone with our only good d coaches, the Glazers will have buried this team for the next 8 years

  18. Denny Gay Says:

I’d drop him just for doing this. He’s a traitor and had ruined his Tampa reputation. Might as well just leave to go pick flowers for all I care.

  19. DoooshLaRue Says:

“The man who lead the charge to keep Liam”
    By Joseph BucFan,

This might rattle the cages of the “Fire Bowles; Promote Coen” crowd, or those already hatching plans for ways to nudge Team Glazer to can Todd Bowles a year from now.

    Good work Joe.

  20. Bucs4Life Says:

I think this was to be expected. Liam is a hot commodity, he is of the McVay tree those coaches are a hot commodity but defenses eventually catch up. I think Thad Lewis should be promoted to OC. He come from the Arians tree and has worked with Canalas and Coen so it could be a hybrid approach that could help the bucs offense stay ahead of coaches looking to attack McVay style approaches.

  21. BakerTime Says:

Team Glazer will have to reopen the checkbook and make Liam the highest paid OC

  22. Durango 95 Says:

How much you wanna bet JL convinced the Glazers that Bowles was the guy. Which left them flatfooted dealing w/ Coen .The ship is taking on water. Haven’t two defensive coaches also left. Captain Bowles is steering this thing straight to the bottom. If true this is catastrophic.

  23. Again Says:

Mediocrity at its finest. The Yucs are back, terrible coaching from top to bottom.

If Sheffter is making this up, he should be fired

  24. Denny Gay Says:

Who cares if he comes back? He’s already half way out the door. Just leave.

  25. Dave B Says:

Let him go. Poor character, zero loyalty, poor manners; your team cannot reach you?. He would have left anyway next year.
TIme to look for someone even better! We can do it!

Here’s the thing: Even though he was a “genius”, the bucs did not advance as well as they did last year. Offense was the issue in the last game.

It’s the players who are important, and the draft. Get a new OC, just as good or better. The search starts now!

  26. Again Says:

Terrible leadership. The asst GMs are gone too and they will take talent with them.

The only guys left are washouts connected to Todd. Fire Licht and Bowles. Truely terrible leadership

  27. Chad Says:

Offense will be fine it’s on the defense to do better. I hate baker and the offense has to learn a new offense which might hurt Jalen’s growth as a wide receiver and maybe Bucky’s also but offense will be fine for the most part

  28. Again Says:

Why are all the talented coaches and front office guys are leaving?????

Could it be that Licht and Todd have something”special” on the downlow?

    Fire Licht my Bowles

  29. firethecannons Says:

Incredibly unprofessional, Jags do not have many pieces, not likely to work out for him. He ghosted the Bucs–refused to answer the phone.

  30. Again Says:

With the 5th pick in the 2026 draft, the Bucs select a QB cause Baker will be gone.

    Glazers are complete idiots

  31. Richard Dickson Says:

We could have all the culture in the world, but a promotion is a promotion. Like people said, there are only 32 head coaching jobs in the world, and how do you know if you’ll be as hot a commodity next year? Or if there’ll be a situation you want to go to? If you’re going to blame anybody, blame Coen for telling us yes then telling us no.

  32. Simeon4HOF Says:

    Wtf

  33. BucU Says:

If this is true then throw anything that belongs to him out by the curb. What a total POS.

  34. BucVoyager Says:

Sitting here laughing at the comments.

Imagine making 20k and you go for an interview and your company counter-offers to pay you 40k. Then the new company says we’ll fire the manager that everyone hates and by the way we’ll give you 60-80k. Everyone of you would take the new job.

Don’t hate the player, hate the game.

I want Coen here but his obligation is to his family not the Glazers or fans.

  35. Simeon4HOF Says:

That boi ain’t ready to be no HC lol. That’s why they the only team showing interest, owner dumb af

  36. Tbbucs3 Says:

Credit to Dave Canales for doing it the right way….

This on the other hand, is how you burn bridges.

  37. Jim Says:

Glazers wouldn’t guarantee him to replace Bowles. Gave him more money but he knows they aren’t going all the way with Bowles in charge. Jags fire Balke and that job just got better. This is in Licht and the Glazers. You have a clise to super bowl offense and a piss poor defense being coached by the head coach that is a mediocre coach.

  38. LakelandSteve Says:

Just lost a lot of respect for Coen if all of this is true. Why couldn’t you man up and tell the Glazers you were going to the Jags. At least be man enough to return their phone calls. Bad look for Coen if this s really what went down.

  39. Faspro Says:

    Good luck, Liam!!

  40. Cybetsecurity_intern Says:

I actually have more respect for him doing what’s right which is not working for Bowles.

  41. orlbucfan Says:

Get in touch with Dirk Koetter or someone of his caliber. If Liam Coen is this type of a lowlife, screw him. He’s no HC. Sorry Joe, “The second-best offensive coordinator the Bucs had (second only to Bucco Bruce Arians) is nearly gone.” I don’t agree with you, and I don’t think so. You can bet this is flying around the players’ grapevine like wild fire, if it’s true. They will be getting in touch with Bowles and asking what they can do. That’s the hidden strength of Bowles and this Bucs team.

  42. Buc-Up Says:

Crazy that our last two OC’s took jobs with two of the worst owners in the NFL…SMH

  43. Jabber Says:

With the 1st pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select….

  44. FortMyersDave Says:

Nice troll Jabber but I think you meant with the first pick of the 2026 draft the Jacksonville Jaguars select…….. Coen is guaranteed to fail in that dumpster fire, chances are he will do worse than Glenn in NY or Canales in Carolina.

  45. John Says:

“F” Cohen!!!!!!!!!! Good luck in Jacksonville with a team that hasn’t been s*** for years. You led the team on and you led the fans on. You deserved for rotten hell!

  46. heyjude Says:

I am disappointed but if this is true, then let him go. The entire scenario does not look good for a current coach, coordinator to do. The Bucs are not a ping pong game to play with. Agree with others commenting about it all. Todd is great when hiring. He will find another good OC.

Tbbucs3 Says: “Credit to Dave Canales for doing it the right way…. This on the other hand, is how you burn bridges.” Fully agree. In any line of work, you don’t ghost your current employer thinking you found something better. Coen will find out that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

  47. Bucs4EverMore Says:

YOU CAN ONLY BLAME THE GLAZERS, FOR NOT FIRING BOWLES AND GIVING COEN THE COACHING JOB!!!

  48. Gary Says:

Hope they have a losing season.
