Bucs Are On A Roll But Todd Bowles Seems Dubious Of Momentum

January 5th, 2025

Three-time NFC South champ.

Hey, the Bucs have won six of their last seven games. That winning streak has propelled the Bucs into the playoffs by winning the NFC South for the fourth straight season.

In fact, Todd Bowles has known nothing but being a division champion as Bucs head coch. He’s the only head coach in team history that can boast a division crown in his first three seasons. But Bowles doesn’t seem to be a big believer that regular season momentum can sweep the Bucs all the way to New Orleans and the Super Bowl.

The regular season is now in the past, Bowles said after today’s 27-19 win.

A 6-1 run to end the regular season “gets us a home game [and] it gets us in the tournament,” Bowles said. “You can’t win them unless you’re in them.

“We’re happy to have a home game. It doesn’t matter who we play, it’s going to be a tough road ahead but we’re confident that we can play good ball and we’ll be ready for whoever we play.”

And the Bucs will play the Commanders next weekend (time and date to be determined).

Bowles has a good point. Just because you won games despite playing badly against bad teams, like today against the slimy Saints, that doesn’t mean you can get away with being sloppy and unfocused in the first half of a playoff game.

The Bucs made it. They are in the postseason. So many teams are envious. Now it’s time to play like they are a division champion.

lets see how far the we do what we do mentality gets the bucs. im pulling for him but there needs to be consequences if bucs cant overcome a halftime deficit due to be ill prepared

  2. LVMYBUCS Says:

Look I like Bowles as a person but he doesn’t have what it takes to get us deep into the playoffs. They will end up firing him when they realize that if I’m not mistaken they did that to Tony Dungy when they brought in Gruden when Dungy couldn’t get us over the hump.

  3. SteveK Says:

Let’s win this b!tch. It would be so Bucs to go on a heater to close out and win the whole damn thing. It would be glorious, and in here for it. Great job getting Mike his yards. That is what’s up!

  4. sue moore Says:

Did not look good first half. Defense pretty bad. Then they turned it around. Need to do so much better.

BUT CONGRATS AND HAVE A HAPPY MONDAY! They DID IT

  5. Gipper Says:

Have heard almost non-stop criticism of Todd Bowles for the last 10 weeks yet here we are #3 seed in NFC playoffs. Todd Bowles as predicted 2 months ago isn’t going anywhere. Can actually argue that he did a heroic job piecing together a beaten up defense to get into the playoffs. Remember it was Todd Bowles who wanted Baker Mayfield in Tampa. In fairness to Coach Bowles, let’s see what he can do next year with a radically overhauled defense. It is bound to be better next year.

  6. Fred Says:

    Bowles ain’t the answer.

  7. Itzok Says:

Just beat the redskins and their rookie qb. Hopefully the defense can be better, they stunk it up in the first half

  8. Tbbucs3 Says:

#3 seed, home playoff game….Todd Bowles defense has been lockdown in the 2d half the last 8 games

That wont stop the moaning of the Bowles haters…..how about go follow a team thats sitting on their coaches next weekend.

    #BadFans

  9. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Couches*

  10. shane Says:

If the Bucs can, at least, stop teams on every other possession during the playoffs, then the Bucs can go deep, but going forward, they will only play top-notched QBs…a tall task, since the Bucs defense can’t even guard Florida’s best high school receivers…

  11. Jethro Tull Says:

There are Bowles critics. Deservedly so. But, no one hates Bowles. That’s ridiculous. Kudos to his second half defensive adjusting the last three games. Curious minds would like to know why not just start that way out of the gate?

  12. BucsBeast Says:

Baker literally saved Bowles job today.
Bucs offense only got the ball 3 damn times in the entire 1st half. Why? Because, Bowles defense couldn’t make a damn stop against backups.
These Bowles believers act like Bowles isn’t the HC and DC. Bowles is directly responsible for game management, defensive scheme, defensive play calling and clock management. Bowles didn’t have his gameplan and team ready to start today. Bowles can be a good HC. Bowles can also be a damn good DC but? He can’t handle both with full focus. He’s overwhelmed.

  13. Zoocomics Says:

@LVMYBUCS…I get your statement, but there are 31 other teams that are still trying to pry the Super Bowl away from the Chiefs. Of all those coaches, how many you think are good enough to lead a team to a Super Bowls. Good luck finding that guy, and if you think Coen is the guy? That’s heckuva gamble. Not for nothing, but you probably look at Tomlin as being that kind of guy and his last Super Bowl was 16 seasons ago! Look I’m with most of you guys that are frustrated with this defense, but to say injuries and lack of talent doesn’t matter and that they should be better is almost crazy talk. Look, one more season for Bowles, no contract extension. No other team will be competing to acquire his services…let’s see if we can do away with the 4 game losing streaks and horrible soft zone. We are reloading on def for 2025, Tampa will make a deep run… if not, perhaps change is in order, and Coen is still around.

    @Gipper, perfectly said really.

  14. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Near second half shutouts the last 5 games – there is some good coaching in there folks.

  15. stpetebucsfan Says:

I agree with all that Coen has done a masterful job this season!

But NOT today!!! He got his clipboard handed to him by Saints DC in the first haf and needed Baker’s heroics in the second as well to bail his poor play calling out.

It was actually weird in the first half especially. It was as if someone was signaling the Saints D the play the Bucs were running. I’ve never seen so much anticipation this entire season.

Everybody has a bad game once in a awhile and Coen had his today. Let’s hope the entire O learned from it.

  16. Jethro Tull Says:

Let’s see it for 60 minutes instead of 28.

  17. Oxycondomns Says:

exactly imagine if carr, kamara, and olave were playing. their number 2 wr went down early in year also. bowles cost brady and bucs another trip to super bowl with how bucs started that game vs rams . you cant afford crappy starts in the playoffs

  18. Oxycondomns Says:

dak looked like the 2nd coming of black jesus in that last brady game

  19. BradyGronk fan Says:

Momentum means alot. It allows less talented or flawed teams beat better teams. The most talented Pat’s team, the 17-0 2007 Pat’s with peak Brady and peak Moss lost to an inferior Giants team with momentum. The 2011 Pat’s lost the SB again to the Giants because momentum can be a juggernaut that takes down great teams. Both Giants team had losing records before winning the last 6 or 7 games straight going into the playoffs.

  20. BradyGronk fan Says:

Too bad the Bucs had to lose the game to Dallas, then they’d have the momentum of 7 straight victories, and their opponents doubting themselves. But maybe Evans getting the 1000 yards give them that additional spark and confidence.

  21. Buddha Says:

Buccaneers 3-0 against the rest of the NFC playoff teams but our fans whine about beating bad teams We won 10 games but our fans act as if we are mediocre. We played six teams that are in the playoffs and are 4-2.

  22. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Some fans don’t remember all those losing seasons where fans were talking about the next draft in early October. I may complain a lot, but congrats Bucs on winning the division and making the playoffs. Hopefully we can get back Winfield, Dean and Otten for next week.

  23. RASH Says:

Tampa fans so soft, Bowles is not good.

  24. Vinny from NYC Says:

    Buddha, good point.

  25. Ed Says:

I saw some great play by the Bucs in the second half but the first half was hard to watch. The Saints for 30 minutes were playing better but after halftime the Bucs woke up and made plays.

Hope that next Sunday they play 60 minutes and they don’t have all the penalties.

  26. KELLY CREGEEN Says:

AFTER THE GAME PRIOR TO THIS WIN.GLACIERS SISTER GAVE BOWLES A BIG BONUS.WISH BRADY WOULD OF BOUGHT INTO THE BUCS INSTEAD OF RAIDERS.WE WILL SEE HOW FAR WE GO….LETS GO BUCS

  27. firethecannons Says:

Todd Bowles seems dubious–period, nothing more needs to be said

  28. Marion Morrison Says:

What the hell? Only complete numbskulls call for firing a winning coach. I’ve seen some idiots. But, the “fire Bowles” drivel takes the prize for the most ignorant take….EVER

  29. Simeon4HOF Says:

Wonder how all the diehard HC fans woulda felt had McMillan nor Evans not caught those 2 passes today, just sayin.

  30. Jwg813 Says:

I am a die hard Bucs fan. Born and raised here. Todd Bowles history tells me we will not make it far playing the kind of first half ball we have been playing All Year with no real exception. The further we get the more elated and surprised I will be

  31. Simeon4HOF Says:

Hope our D gets Healthier fast.

I appreciate Todd’s strengths and our NFC South Crowns and love when His Defense did hum so much.

I love his positive and moral qualities, love how our team plays for and respects him.

Just hope he can keep learning and do better.

Loved when he got hired. Didn’t ever want see him fired.

He’s done a lot for us. His D carried us in Playoffs SB Win.

Just no more dumb clock stuff, no more other silly stuff, no more timeout gaffes, questionable risks or lacks thereof, players lookin unmotivated or unprepared on his side, no more xtra soft zone at wrongest times, no more other whatevers please. Please grow Todd. And better draft right Defensive players next year, oughtta get to get atleast 4. Plz no more roller coaster.

Don’t have our Defense coming out looking soft and sleepy and on some other next Sunday night. Real talk

Tighten up Todd. Motivate our Defense to come out like they used to

  32. JReel Buc Says:

Defense looks slow… always a step behind,….still can’t get consistent pressure …. Vita is the only thing that saves this defense …the soft underneath pass is always open. In a weak division you can get away with mistakes bad matchups it will be exposed but as long as the team is winning you’ll have your Bowles apologist until you get a loss then all of a sudden they flip flop and confidence polls say otherwise.

Who is gonna tell this lady that Todd Bowles is 53-65 (.449) as a Head Coach in the NFL?

  34. Joe in Michigan Says:

    54-67 (.446) including the playoffs.

  35. New Fan Land Says:

They didn’t play badly against a bad team. They played par against a team playing harder and better than their record shows.

The D is weak minded, likely because of Tod Bowles. I like him as HC but would like a real DC. The team could turn the D around with the players on the roster with an aggressive minded DC.

The offense has kept them in almost every game this season. Their “bad” games have still been scrappy for the most part, but you’re doing to play teams that make it look like you’re not trying. That’s how the game works.

Anyone who doubts this teams inherent ability right now is a fool.

  36. orlbucfan Says:

It’s always the usual yahoos on here calling themselves “fans” when their comments say the exact opposite. With a beat up D, Bowles’ Bucs are 10-7. They won the Division—again. ME13 got his yards–1st ballot HOF and he’s playing like it. Bucs played DC in Tampa back when Gruden was here. First round of playoffs. Tampa lost. I am very happy that the team has achieved this much this season with all the ###### Buc Luck. Hopefully, we’ll get a few more players back. Go Bucs!!

  37. SavageBucsFan Says:

My question is this though…why did they have to make 2nd half adjustments? Why didn’t they (or couldn’t they) play defense like they played in the second half in the first half?

  38. Chef Baker Says:

It’s the D that showed up in the first half yesterday that scares me for the playoffs. And the middle of the field being wide arse open.

  39. Becky Says:

Bowles has done a sufficient job. He got us to the playoffs and should be commended. But not getting a hand on, or even pressuring opposing quarterbacks in the first half of every game is hurting us.. He is making adjustments and we look much better in the second half of games but those adjustments have got to be made in the first quarter not the third. Congratulations Bucs! Baker, you have lived up to, and surpassed my respect for you as a player. You play with more toughness and heart than this 66 year old has seen in a very long time, and it is a privilege to watch you play.

  40. BakerBucs says Says:

Most teams play a solid half almost never the entire game I wud rather have a slower 1st half & r turn it on in 2nd half just look at vikings yesterday they played great 1st half defense 2nd half not so much.sure glad baker throws some serious dime balls when it matters most ask Brady bout that

  41. Mike Johnson Says:

Cohen, Mayfield..the entire offense always finds a way. They never give up. But our DEFENSE? I would not give you a quarter for them. Thats our Achilles heel..DEFENSE. Has been all year and its what will not allow us to advance any further than maybe one win in these playoffs.

  42. Football Says:

People just need a reason to dislike something maybe just maybe they start out slow to let teams show their hands so they know how to adjust same way they played when Brady was there but remember Mr. Bowles is black reason enough

  43. KC Says:

All I hear is alot of whining. If you’re not a fan…your comment means nothing. To all the Bowles haters….HE’S WINNING. That’s the objective, however you may get it done. Defense starters should all play in the playoffs. If not, I’m sure we’ll find a way to win like we ALWAYS do!! LET’S GOOO BUCCS

  44. BucFanforLife Says:

Yeah KC, I’m with you. A whole bunch of whiners on this forum. I’m proud of having Todd Bowles as our coach! Now let’s go win this thing! Fire the cannons! 💪🏴‍☠️🏈
