Blocked!

January 30th, 2025

“Nah Graham, I’m not really that much into Lynyrd Skynyrd anyway. Do like the Allman Brothers, though.”

Just as Joe believed, new Jags coach and former Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen tried to pluck someone from his former offensive staff with the Bucs.

And Joe fears this won’t be the last time Coen and the Jags try.

Per Jeremy Fowler of BSPN, the Jags requested permission to interview Bucs offensive line coach Kevin Carberry. But Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht, likely still seething from last week’s dramatic events involving Coen, wouldn’t have any of it.

Licht threw a Tristan Wirfs-like block on the Jags and Licht pancaked Coen’s attempt to swipe Carberry.

Joe is happy about this. For now. Joe is still frightened that Coen will try to hire Carberry as an offensive coordinator (in title only) and the Bucs and Licht have no power to stop that.

Carberry, in his first year with the Bucs, did an absolutely kickarse job. Joe could argue the Bucs had a top-five offensive line.

If the Bucs can somehow keep Coen from grabbing Carberry, Joe would consider that a monster win for a so-far sad start to the Bucs’ offseason.

Liam needs to find a jaguar’s head in his bed when he wakes up some day.

  2. OR Buc Says:

Bringing him on as OC would keep Coen from bringing in his buddy from Seattle.

  3. Leopold Stotch Says:

El Serpiente strikes again… He’s going to keep trying too. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Carberry as their “OC”

  4. Aqualung Says:

I’ll say it again. Liam was successful with the Bucs because Baker is a man’s man and was able to translate for the team. Anyone think the dude who looks like a girl can do that for the Baguars?

  7. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Kevin Carberry is a pretty big peace of our puzzle.

As OL coach, he knows passing and running as well. Him, I would consider aust keep guy.

  8. heyjude Says:

    Good for Licht! Loving it.

It’s becoming obvious that Coen can’t do a job without many Bucs… And he also seems to like the same candidates we are interviewing from the Rams. Copying us. Says so much about his limited capabilities in the NFL.

Agree with Aqualung – We have Baker and other great players; Mike, Bucky, McMillan, … They made Coen look good.

  9. Ha-Ha-Ha Says:

The real reason for the subterfuge was the Jags couldn’t sign Coen and had to keep it secret until after the Jags completed their Rooney rule interviews. The League needs to either get serious and investigate or scrap the process.

  10. Edgar Berry Says:

Liam Coen sucks rope, and I hope his Jagoffs go 0-17 this year.

  11. Vanessa Anne Says:

    Bravo, Jason!! 🙂

Just don’t let your guard down.

There’s a lot of different directions and angles Liam and the Jags can use to go after Kevin Carberry (or any of our other coaches).

  12. Lightningvinny Says:

Not sure Coen is ready for HC ,, most guys go into their first year with a plan and staff set ,, Coen seems to be doing things half way ,,, like he had no clue what it takes to be a HC

  13. Dave B Says:

Tell Lord Voldemort-Coen to back off…..by opening up our bank account and offering raises. Unfortunately, this is now a WAR.
But in the end, we will be successful. Jason is amazing, Owners are great. Todd is a stand up person.

  14. Gofortheface30 Says:

People can talk about the reverse/fumble all they want – but another rookie was the real reason why Tampa lost a game against a team that they are clearly better than. It was the bullshi cute little delayed snap. That was the real deciding factor. I love Barton, love McMillan, but they’re still 22. And when you rely on kids in big moments – then ultimately you’re going to simply get kid moments, and kids ruin everything. Whatever, onward and upward, I guess. Now don’t do it again

  15. Dreghost_jr Says:

So ready to move on from this arsehole, i really hope that guy Nate from the rams get the job…seems like those coaches who write for Sean McKay does a really good job when they leave to play call for another team

  16. BucU Says:

All I got to add is F LIAM COHEN.

  17. Pahpahmike Says:

One question about Coen I have to ask. If he’s is this almighty OC, why did he only get 1 interview and that was with an organization that may I say, not very stable at this time. Did other organizations know something about Coen?’ Like he has been unstable and basically did the same thing to the 49ers and Kentucky

  18. Todd Says:

I love how Joe applies a monicker on certain people that sticks forevermore.

For example, related to Liam, El Serpiente.

I would love for you to consider modifying it just a bit:

El Serpiente Liam Con … (except with it being ‘Coen’ with the ‘e’ struck through like you do with the Jag’s owner). Two peas in a con pod.

If forevermore that ascription is present every time Liam visits JBF to catch up (which you KNOW he does and will every day like we all do), then he will always be reminded that being a DISHONEST snake has CONsequences.

    Just a humble request.

  19. ChiBuc Says:

why did he only get 1 interview

Good point. I’m going to venture a guess that:
he has a small body of work
He had a great cast of players to work with
He’s never built something from the ground & stuck with it
He has never exhibited any loyalty
As good as the offense was, he laid some eggs, including that 20 pt playoff performance (a qb draw with bucky back there, wasting VV on a route instead of plowing him into the def, jet sweep with your back to a wal….)

  20. ChiBuc Says:

Joe, I’m curious how a GM block goes down and how would media know? I mean, does JL just not take the call, then turns around and make a public statementabout it? What a weird blizzard ethic the NFL seems to have. Btw, is there a line on the next OC in Vegas? And are you offering any tips?

  21. ChiBuc Says:

Also, I’d be curious to know how much input Carberry has on blocking scheme, or is he just a technical guy? Because, if he has significant input into the former, I’d have to say he was THE (pronounce as thee) most important addition to the offense last yr. I say this, because the run blocking took leaps as recognized by White’s ypc from Canales to Coen.

  22. Bobby M. Says:

Next will be players…..Coen will want guys who know his system and can help other units understand it. I believe White, Brendson and Godwin are all free agents, all three would help Lawrence develop.

  23. garro Says:

This is so very frustrating to this fan!

I understand the need to give opportunity for advancement but dang it! How in the world does any team keep any successful coach on their staff? If he is not successful he is surely gone and if he is? The same …

How in the world did we keep Monte Kiffin and those excellent coaches for more than a year back in the day?

Can’t make everyone and assistant head coach or (insert fake title here).

    Go Bucs!

  24. Formerbrownsfan Says:

F Liam and F Caneles!!! They made their bones off of Baker’s do what it takes sacrifice alone with Evans and Godwins greatness. The next OC will look good because of those 3 and OL. We can say all we want about the fumble, but the bottom line is the offense tied the game and the defense needed to make a stop. NOT THE OFFENSE FAULT

  25. IrishTony Says:

Could the Bucs somehow promote Carberry? Say make him an OC assistant/OL coach?

  26. IrishTony Says:

Carberry along with the other OC asst were 25% of the success. Players were 50%/Coen 25%

  27. LongSeason Says:

    garro Says:

“I understand the need to give opportunity for advancement but dang it! How in the world does any team keep any successful coach on their staff? If he is not successful he is surely gone and if he is? The same …”

To be what we don’t want to be and that is pure mediocrity. Middle of the road in every stat. That’s the only. Meaning nobody wants our coaches but we do. Fly in the middle and no one is poached. I’d rather have elite team that keeps getting poached.
Look at team with long term success. They always have a coaching tree. Long and wide in distribution among teams. Yet they keep winning.
Is winning about coaches or is it about organization and culture?

  28. Mobucs Says:

Coen, it is said, did the best for himself and his family. Moving to Jville may not be the best for any other assistant coach or player on the Bucs. Moreover, the poachee does not even have a GM to negotiate with in Dooovale. I’m not sure Coen has engendered loyalty, especially to himself, in any coach or player. I commend the Bucs management for quickly, but not rashly, seeking a new coordinator so that the present staff can have some sense of stability and security.

  29. Mike Johnson Says:

Nobody is gonna like it, But I’m sayin it anyways….Let the man interview. He will probably make twice the cash the Bucs pay him. Hell, Coen is making 12 mil a yr. Bowles makes 3. I got a C in Math in college but Somebody is kinda cheap. Right?

  30. KABucs Says:

    Picasso face = El Serpiente

    Am I being childish? LOL
    Rhetorical question.
