Baker Mayfield Played A Role In Liam Coen Staying
January 22nd, 2025Well, here’s a very interesting tidbit from a guy Joe knows has a direct pipeline to Bucs shot-callers.
At lunch today, Joe will uncork a bottle of Bulleit Bourbon Frontier Whiskey and raise a glass to Team Glazer and the Bucs for stepping up and keeping the best offensive coordinator the Bucs have ever had whose name is not “Bucco Bruce Arians.”
And this came hours before Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen was to interview with the Jags today for the second time this coaching cycle to be the Jaguars’ head coach.
The move was replete with a new contract for Coen. Cha-ching.
Well done.
The co-host of “Good Morning Football,” seen weekdays on NFL Network, Peter Schrager, took to Twitter to offer his take on this great day in Bucs history. Joe knows who Schrager speaks with at One Buc Palace so Schrager’s Bucs takes aren’t flippant guesses.
Schrager suggested that not only was this a team effort by Bucs suits to keep Coen from bolting to Jacksonville (WTVT-TV Channel 13 meteorologist Paul Dellegatto said it was too cold and snowy in Jacksonville for Coen), Baker Mayfield also played a role.
@PSchrags: The Glazers, Jason Licht, Baker, Todd Bowles, and Mike Greenberg, who was a first round interview for the Jets GM job, all deserve credit in getting Liam Coen to return to Tampa Bay. This has been in the works and a testament to the leadership and what they’re building in TB.
So, did Mayfield show up at Coen’s front door last night, six-pack in hand, and beg Coen to stay? Did Mayfield call up Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht and threaten to demand a trade to Jacksonville if Coen slipped out of One Buc Palace?
Did Mayfield text Team Glazer and say he would take a discount if that extra loot could find its way into Coen’s Roth IRA account?
This is all very interesting to Joe, but an element of this seems to ring true: Coen preferred to work with Mayfield over Trevor Lawrence.

Not much I wouldn’t have done to have him back, very glad it didn’t come to that
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:04 pm
Thank you Baker. I’m not a fan yet but you are growing on me.
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:08 pm
Say what you want to about some of the decision-making by Bowles, at times, but the head coach had a massive influence on Coen staying, and fans should appreciate that.
Not only did Bowles want him back, but this move also indicates that the team could be setting Coen up for something even bigger. In the near future, Bowles may be able to move into a front office role and thus hand his gig over to Coen as the team’s next head coach.
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:12 pm
Not bad for a middling qb ( who finished 4th in qbr this year at 106). This bodes well for Coen sliding into the hc role down the line.
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:13 pm
Glad Coen is staying.
Just wonder what Bowles would do in the FO ? Everyone keeps saying out him there, but to do what? How many former coaches do we need ?
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:19 pm
Whatever it took…..it IS A MESSAGE GIVEN LOUD AND PROUD!! Deep breaths y’all….there’s hope in Tampa Bay. LFG Bucs!!
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:19 pm
The Bucs are out of the playoffs, but somehow I feel like we won the prize. LFG!
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:19 pm
Our window stays open to make a serious run over the coming years with our offense all we need to do is quickly build a much better defense and go heavy in the draft with defensive studs and a big splash in free agency.
Re-sign Godwin, LVD
Let JTS walk, give Dean a bus pass
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:20 pm
Contrary to popular opinion, the band is staying together.
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:24 pm
He’s the next HC for sure, we all saw it coming with Koetter too. This way Todd goes out with his head held high when he retires and Liam slides over to HC
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:25 pm
LFB
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:25 pm
Big kudos to all in making this happen – The Glazers, Bowles, Baker, and Mike Greenberg. It’s a win-win for everyone.
PSL Bob – Agreed, we won the prize.
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:30 pm
Hey, Let em bake, let’s keep it real, Baker basically tied for second with Burrow and Goff on the NFL passer rating. 108.1, 108.2 and 108.5. It’s not really a tie but it is so close you could make an argument for it. The point is WE have a bad azzzz quarterback that is going to lead us to a superbowl in a year or 2!!! We now know with Liam staying the offense is going to be something to see each week. Can you imagine if they can get the defense in the top 5.
2025 is going to be so much fun. Already can’t wait!!!
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:36 pm
Joes, of your potential Baker tactics to keep Liam a Buc, I vote for the 6pack option.
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:42 pm
This is the best news ever. It sounds dumb but look at other teams that have consistently each year. They continue to grow and develop! I have big hopes for us this year. We just need to get the defense back to form. Otherwise Baker will have to play perfectly as we saw during the playoff loss, one mistake can ruin a game when your defense cannot get off the field.
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:42 pm
Rod munch will not like knowing that Baker had a hand in keeping Coen here. Rod hates Baker just ask him
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:45 pm
Retaining Coen is huge for our team and the growth of our offense. Resign Godwin and draft another young stud WR. Not opposed to letting Bredeson walk if we invest in the draft once again. Lots of potential and positive energy surrounding this team
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:52 pm
A lot of us really thought that the Bucs wouldn’t let Coen walk out the door and that’s what happened. I think more than Mayfield help kept Coen in town. As had been mentioned earlier, not sure if it’s accurate but it was said that Bowles and Coen was close. Also, the Bucs have a great organization from the owners to the front office, a great and promising young roster and a decent city to live and raise your kids. Last Coen should feel pretty good. He got a big raise and he’s only responsible for the offense, Bowles is responsible for any other screwup or failure other than the offense In JV he would have had an unstable organization and he’s responsible for the whole hog
January 22nd, 2025 at 1:01 pm
With a title like ‘Baker Mayfield Played A Role In Liam Coen Staying’, I was expecting some meat Joe, not just Peter Schrager’s speculation. The title could’ve just as easily read ‘Tristan Wirfs Played a Role in Liam Coen Staying”. Or Bucky Irving. Or Mike Evans. I’m sure that Coen getting a chance to work with top quality players played a role in his decision to stay here. And yes, so did the money most likely.
Liam’s got the bull by the balls (oops, tail) right now. He had a fantastic year & is in the driver’s seat. Glazers undoubtedly see him as the HC-in-waiting. Why would he want to go to Jacksonville (they’ve been 77-167 over the last 15 seasons with only 3 winning seasons in that span). And oh ya, the coach who has 2 of those winning seasons just got fired. Heck even Byron Leftwich didn’t want to go there.
January 22nd, 2025 at 1:05 pm
Baker played the biggest role in Coen staying. If Baker doesn’t choke in the Redskins game and fumble the ball and lose the game, the Bucs go on to Philly where they almost certainly beat the Eagles as Bowles has Hurts number. Then you’re likely facing the Rams in the NFC Championship game in Tampa and Coen is the hottest assistant in all of football.
January 22nd, 2025 at 1:09 pm
Baker didn’t choke. He tied the game up after the fumble. Remember that, Rod? Tie game. Tied up. The game was tied. Remember? If not, go watch it again. I assure you that is what happened.
And then the Defense gave up a long drive.
Fact.
January 22nd, 2025 at 1:11 pm
Baker gonna get a new deal?
January 22nd, 2025 at 1:12 pm
Rod go munch.on your preferred rod and stfu, ya harbor overfreight tool
January 22nd, 2025 at 1:12 pm
What a great win for this organization as a whole. Todd go get you a defensive coordinator and be the head coach of a 12-5 team next year or 11-6 if you still don’t believe in a pass rush.
January 22nd, 2025 at 1:18 pm
Fire the Cannons, Bucs score BIGLY
January 22nd, 2025 at 1:19 pm
Munchenstein just wants attention. It started for Munch with a bad potty training. He regressed further when he was never picked to play in pick up games. Mayfield’s success is a reminder of all Muncher’s failures.
January 22nd, 2025 at 1:20 pm
Great day for Bucs fans. Now the Bucs can concentrate mainly on defense in the upcoming draft and free agency. Maybe we can steal a late round playmaker, wide receiver/kick returner on offense but we have to shore up the defense. Congratulations Tampa Bay Bucs organization on keeping our great O.C.
January 22nd, 2025 at 1:22 pm
Big win for this origination as a whole. Todd go get yourself a defensive coordinator and you go on and be the head coach and go 12-5 next year, or maybe 11-6 if you still don’t believe in a pass rush. Go Bucs

Gipper LMAO, classic.
January 22nd, 2025 at 1:38 pm
Awesome. Now send Bowles to the C suite to fetch coffee and doughnuts for the real execs up top.
Our new HC is already in the building and running a power offense.
Defense wins championships, so we need a DC that knows how to stop a pass.
Bowles is a relic from the 80s and 90s. Send him off into the sweet bye and bye.
January 22nd, 2025 at 1:57 pm
It is amazing in the different types of class and character in people. Mark Andrew’s drops a touchdown pass that would have won the game and when asked about it Jackson refused to blame him. Instead he talked about how good he played. On the the other hand you have a rod munch that blames someone erroneously for a play. All the proof is against his comment but he wants to cause hate and division on the team. What a loser.
January 22nd, 2025 at 2:13 pm
I want to know if Liam’s new contract was for more than one year. If I was a Glazer I would have made it for more. I wonder how we can find out?
January 22nd, 2025 at 2:21 pm
Baker Mayfield is a leader and a damn good football player. Hard to imagine how the team could have done any better. As a Bucs fan life is good. except for ….. Never mind, I’n taking a break today from blasting you know who’s defense.

I don’t agree much with Munch, but when your defense makes a huge goal line stand. You absolutely can can’t fumble the ball away and give it right back to the other team in the fourth quarter of a playoff game.
That being said, Mayfield is still a top 10 quarterback, and he will bounce back from that.
January 22nd, 2025 at 2:51 pm
Of course, Lawrence is way overhyped. He can’t see part of the field over that schnoz and there’s proven success with Baker.
January 22nd, 2025 at 3:31 pm
No brainer. 35 million Baker > 55 million Lawrence.

Literally everyone knows Andrews cost the team the game. Everyone. Including Jackson.
What you’re saying is that you want people to lie and say untrue things, because it makes you feel better about Baker choking in his last two playoff games, and if you just pretend it didn’t happen, next time things will be different.

Agreed.
And what makes my opinion worthwhile is that I’m not a mindless Baker Boi drone who praises everything unconditionally. Those people are very very boring and very very stupid.
But Baker at a much lower salary is clearly a better deal than Lawrence, although I still wouldn’t write off Lawrence, which is not a knock on Baker since I know the Boi(s) always look to be slighted.
January 22nd, 2025 at 3:54 pm
I wonder if there was an unwritten promise that if Bowles goes or retires, that Coen has the HC job.
Either that or Jacksonville demanded he hire Byron Leftwich as his OC.
January 22nd, 2025 at 4:40 pm
@Rod
Dude they’re getting harsh here. I do not share all these opinions of you.
I DO disagree with your Baker takes but I respect how much time goes into your analysis, watching the All 22’s and listening to opponents radio sports talk shows.
I give you A for effort and a B in takes becaue we obviously disagree about QB’s.
I do not feel the need to call you names over our disagreement.
January 22nd, 2025 at 5:17 pm
Awwwww…… someone is a Bitter Baker Hater. It’s ok that you were wrong about Baker. Heck alot of people were. Just let it go buddy, the stress of hate will eat you alive. Let it go buddy, breath easy and just enjoy the ride. As a Bucs fan, if you are a Bucs fan you don’t want to be on the wrong side of this Baker and the Bucs winning a Superbowl thing. I can see it coming from a mile away.

The succession plan is in place! Go Bucs!!
January 22nd, 2025 at 5:35 pm
Rod Munch you’ve got me cracking up with about half of your posts. I find that anything that makes me laugh like that contains at least a morsel of truth. But Stpetebucsfan don’t give to much respect to Rod analysis. He watches All 22 to assign blame and laugh at perceived incompetence and listens to opponents radio for the same reasons. He especially likes to listen to radio of opposing fans bellyaching. So Rod don’t slow down. Discussion wouldn’t be worth a darn without dissent. Rock On Bucs!!

“And what makes my opinion worthwhile is that I’m not a mindless Baker Boi drone who praises everything unconditionally. Those people are very very boring and very very stupid.”
But IS that what makes your opinion worthwhile tho Rod?
It couldn’t be a percieved sense of self importance or anything like that could it.
You’re a troll.
At least when it comes to Baker. What’s weird to me is you willingness to look objectively at other situations but you can’t seem to get over it when it comes to him.
At least it’s a (comic these days) relief from the Todd must go morons.
January 22nd, 2025 at 9:05 pm
Rod Munch I don’t think you know or understand what it means to choke in this context. No one who plays the game with as much heart and physical courage as Baker does can possibly “choke”. It’s possible to have errors in judgment or bad luck at in opportune times perhaps. Choking implies mental weakness and that is reserved for cowards. Baker’s physical courage is on display every time he takes the field and the way he plays the game and considering everything he has been through in his career with the incessant criticism, most of it unfair, a mentally weak person would have been beaten down and would have given up.For him to be where he is now is remarkable imo.
January 22nd, 2025 at 9:12 pm
Wow Rod, the only thing I want is for people to accept facts and evidence for what they are, truth. But i know that is asking way too much of you. As I have stated and proved, ALL the coaches on the internet, coaching manuals and all the coaching history down through time teach the same thing when it comes to the jet sweep, the receiver HAS to keep his route tight to the quaterbacks feet. They ALL state the same thing, 1 yard. If you are more, which McMillan was, it throws the timing off and the jet sweep is ALL about timing. I’m not even going to go into the need to run parallel to the line of scrimmage because you obviously can’t comprehend the 1 yard concept, so we’ll leave it easy, 1 yard. McMillan was not 1 yard. He was 1.5-2 yards. That is why he got the ball in the side not the gut. It is impossible to fix a bad route when it is being ran at 20 mph and the whole thing takes milliseconds to happen. I am actually beginning to feel sorry for you Rod. Anyone can easily see McMillan was more than 1 yard, therefore it was on him. Normally you wouldn’t think half of a yard would matter but in the jet sweep, it does, a lot. It’s the nature of the jet sweep and IF you knew anything about it, you would know it, but you don’t, so you ignorantly argue and look, well, ignorant, really ignorant.

January 22nd, 2025 at 9:29 pm
As usual munch you missed the point about Lamar and Andrew’s. It just hit me, you are egocentric, you can’t comprehend what other people say, you only hear and see what you want to see and hear. Its the only thing that matters to you. Its like you said, MY opinion matters.Trying to get you to see another’s point of view is impossible, it’s not going to happen. Sad
January 22nd, 2025 at 10:15 pm
@stpetebucsfan….. munch dug his own grave with his own hateful comments. I agree we shouldn’t be bashing him the way he does our bucs players and coaches but hey, he opened himself up to it. You wanna post dumb s*** then get ready for the push back from real fans and supporters of this organization. I’ve lived here in Tampa Bay for 29 years and haven’t heard such nonsense when there were truly QBs who deserved the criticism he has been dishing out on Baker. Other than Brady, Bake is the best we’ve ever had!!! Facts! Go Bucs!!

Wondering if the new contract has maybe a title change maybe assistant head coach and the word that he’s the next head coach like they did with Bowles at the time. Not saying that’s the case but sure would say alot. But at the end of the day I’m glad he’s staying a Buc.

DR, that last sentence grabbed my attention, el quicko. What is going on with the Jags?? Yes, I like them better than the Fish. Coen got smart. He did the interviews to get the experience. He proved to skeptics like me that he knows what side of the NFL bread his butter is on. He still needs more experience in putting together Offensive game plans. Let’s face it. Some of his calls in the last game STUNK! He knows what he’s got here in Tampa. This sure ain’t the Culverhouse (groan) Era.
