Baker Mayfield On Cusp Of Rare Feat

January 4th, 2025

Nearing NFL history.

If Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield only has an average game tomorrow, he will join an elite group of quarterbacks where only one will not be a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Mayfield is one touchdown and 221 passing yards shy of this elite group. Only nine quarterbacks have thrown for 40 touchdowns and 4,500 passing yards in the same season.

The list of the group reads like a Who’s Who of quarterbacks in the past 40 years. Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Joe Burrow, Andrew Luck, Pat Mahomes, Peyton Manning, Dan Marino, drama queen Aaron Rodgers and Matt Stafford.

The only quarterback on that list who will not be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame (Manning and Marino are already in) is Andrew Luck. His career was cut short due to injuries.

Also, if Mayfield throws for one touchdown pass, he will become only the second Bucs quarterback to throw for at least 40 touchdowns in a season. Brady did this with the Bucs in 2020 and 2021.

And he didn’t even make the Pro Bowl.

  2. OR Buc Says:

    Baker Gonna Bake

  3. Joseph C Simmons Says:

Andrew Luck’s career was cut short by his retirement at a very young age, presumably because he was tired of rehabbing injuries. While I totally respect him for that, the way you wrote it made it sound like his career ended the way Gale Sayers’ career ended.

  4. OHBucFan Says:

Gonna enjoy watching Baker join this elite club.

Joe thinks he wrote it accurately. Why was he tired of rehabbing? He was rehabbing from injuries. So yeah, his career was cut short by injuries.

  6. JustVisiting Says:

If Baker has another five TD game, he’ll be in the top 10 seasons of all time on that metric.

  7. heyjude Says:

Joyous to see Baker getting his due and in good company.

Agree BillyBucco. He and others are named alternatives though when some good players didn’t get that honor. And with all the twist and turns we could be in the play-offs and you never know the Super Bowl. Baker won MVP last year at the Pro Bowl. I think he was an alternative last year at first too.

  8. CleanHouse Says:

is Joe Burrow already a hall of famer?

  9. Mike C Says:

Clean House, people who are currently playing can’t be in the Hall….. you would really have to lack intelligence to ask that kind of question (and since you can’t figure it out, QBs that throw for lots of yards and TDs go to the hall).

  10. Permanently Moderated Says:

Remember when Jameis was being hailed for his 30 TDs (along with 30 interceptions)? Oh, those were the days.

  11. Leighroy Says:

To play devils advocate for cleanhouse, who’s history indicates he doesn’t really deserve the benefit of the doubt, if the question is more so framed as “is Joe Burrow’s resume already worthy of HOF consideration?” I’d say no.

He’s been very, very good and has put up stats, but is still young, has no ring and only 1 Super Bowl appearance. Much like Luck, if his career ended tomorrow it wouldn’t be enough body of work. His trajectory is certainly tracking for the HOF though, and another 8-10 years of current pace likely gets him there, especiallly if he defeats Mahomes in the playoffs again… a few times.

  12. Kenton Smith Says:

Leighroy you have it right. Burrow is certainly tracking. But the thing that is most important is Super Bowl rings for a QB. Josh Allen, Baker Mayfield, and Lamar Jackson are 3 QBs who have paid their dues and are tracking to win Super Bowls in their careers. Imagine those three guys all went in the first round in 2018! I think maybe Cincy nor KC nor Detroit are strong enough this year to win it all which really helps us out. I predicted on this sight 3 or 4 months ago I could see Mayfield against Allen in this year’s Super Bowl. I can still see that.

  13. StickinUp4Centers Says:

How many of those guys did it in 16 games vs 17?

  14. Mike C Says:

Dan in Miami had no superbowls…..

  15. mg Says:

    Go Bucs

  16. TDTB Says:

Happy for Baker, but season is longer now.

  17. Larrd Says:

A Super Bowl appearance or victory would put Baker on a possible HOF track.

  18. Dom Says:

And 4 total TD’s to beat Brady’s season record of 45 total TD’s in 2021. Hoping he gets it and Mike goes off for a big day to leave no doubt if he will get his 1K yards

  19. darengibo Says:

yeah, but he sure ain’t no Sam Darnold!!!

  20. Curse of Gruden Says:

The older quarterbacks could actually be hit unlike the flag football rules that apply to today’s QBs. It’s an apples to oranges comparison.

  21. Joseph C Simmons Says:

Joe thinks he wrote it accurately. Why was he tired of rehabbing? He was rehabbing from injuries. So yeah, his career was cut short by injuries.

Not questioning the accuracy so much as the wording. But it’s your rodeo.

  22. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Joe

LMAO. Well played! Exactly! If you retire because you’re tired of rehabbing your body from injuries you can clearly say that injuries caused the retirement.

If you wanted to nitpick meaning there may have been a point if you had posted INJURY in the singular but you did not and INJURIE(S) are clearly what cut his career short.

  23. Seattle Buc is back in TB Says:

    Wow. Lets go

  24. Albe Says:

This is why they should not vote for the pro bowl until the season is over.

  25. unbelievable Says:

Not good enough for the pro bowl though 😂😂

  26. BAKERSBucs says Says:

The pro bowl only gets so many participants baker doesn’t need to go to pro bowl he already got top honors last year in every category no need to do that again besides he will b in the playoffs anyway

  27. SlyPirate Says:

    “Thank you, Mike Evans.”
    Sincerely,
    Baker Mayfield

  28. Gipper Says:

Careful everyone acknowledging this accomplishment, we wouldn’t want you to be slammed with the derogatory Baker Boies handle. The crew that spent the last 2 years criticizing all things Mayfield is very silent lately. They were told in advance what to expect from Baker. They refused to believe it and now won’t acknowledge it. That bunch isn’t even happy for the team. They would much prefer that the team and Mayfield fail so they can continue the charade that they are football wisemen.

  29. SenileSenior Says:

Having seen Baker Mayfield in 2023 I was quite happy. He has exceeded my expectations this year. He is getting a lot of attention because of his performance. He is considered top tier now. “Wow!”, is all I can say now.

  30. GoneGator Says:

    Sad but True @Gipper

Just listen to what Mike, Tristan, Bucky, and the rest of the team AND coaches have to say about Baker. These guys aren’t blowing smoke up our a$$es when they say things like we play for each other and refer to the team as family.

  31. BradyGronk fan Says:

Baker has allpro #s. If he lights it up against the Saints, it’s arguable that he is the best QB in the NFC.

  32. BradyGronk fan Says:

I was lukewarm to Mayfield in 2023. I thought his ceiling was good but not elite. He is elite this year. His numbers are comparable to a typical Brady or Brees year. His style and body type look a lot like Brees. But Brees made lots of deep throws. Brady had some years where he rarely made deep throws depending on his OC and WRs. I wonder if Mayfield can improve on his deep throws. Brees and Brady use to go to a QB guru even in their twilight years.

  33. Scotty Mack Says:

Frankly, other than a win, I’m just pulling for 37 points from the Bucs which would make this season the highest in points scored in Bucs history – something that ZERO sites have mentioned.

  34. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

    Mayfield to the Future…

  35. Joe_bucs_40 Says:

Andrew luck was without a doubt in a HOF trajectory, one might argue had he continued playing and won a super bowl in his career that he would have been a the best Colts QB of all time. With respect to Manning and Unitas. Luck was different and I agree with the comment above that he was tired of rehabbing injuries and chose to retire.

  36. Kenton Smith Says:

Scotty Mack, good catch! Now we’ll all be pulling for 37 points along with you! I mean nothing wrong if we hang 45 points and pad that record a little bit while we’re at it!!

  37. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Well I hope he throws at least 4tds tomorrow so he can break Brady’s td record.

  38. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Gulperboi calm down Baky flaky. You bring out the worst in certain Buc fans because you’re a fanboi of a player and not the Bucs. You people make personal attacks against those who don’t wear your Bakervision glasses and it took this year to begin to believe in him. Unlike you we don’t have his name tattooed on our lower back and we don’t breathe all things Baker Mayfield. Man up and stop crying about being persecuted for being a fanboi because you caused it all by yourself

  39. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Mike C you sir just showed your intelligence level by dogging Clean house because he surely was being facetious with his question. He’s been up here way longer than you so I’m sure he knows better. What are you like 13 Bobby Bouchet?

  40. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Look here Secretary of Fanboi Misinformation and Propoganda Gulperboi. I’ve been a Bucs fans as a child in 1979 when I found out Tampa Bay had an NFL team. Been one since and always will be. Unlike you Baker fans I didn’t jump ship when the Bucs cut my favorite players then follow them and disrespect the team fans for not loving them like I did. I will never love Baker because of you rancid fanboi types but hope he blows up and wins us a Super Bowl of two because he plays for us .

  41. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

You know 99, if all this keyboard work was face to face and in public not in complete anonymity, you wouldn’t be so bold as to talk so big after being so thoroughly embarrassed about all things having to do with NFL quarterback talent. But it is, so on you go, talking like you were never wrong and trying your best to embarrass others the way you have been due to your own ignorance. And because you have been wrong, everybody that was right is lice, a fool or rancid. The only thing that you lack being proved wrong in, is Baker actually good enough to win a superbowl. Oh wait, he is having a BETTER year than Mahomes ever did in all 3 years he won superbowls. So I guess your embarrassment is utter and totally complete now, but you’re just too lacking to know better. So on you go with the same old meaningless drivel that an 8th grader would spew out-childish name calling and ignoring facts. I wish i was a fan since 1979. WELL YOU CANT BE BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN FIRST!!! NO I’VE BEEN A FAN LONGER THAN YOU, NO I HAVE, NO I HAVE!!!! I KNOW YOU ARE BUT WHAT AM I!!!!
    wow!!!

  42. Scott Says:

Anyone know somewhere the game is being streamed?
